3 An Outstanding Trip... At last weekend s NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, top-ranked Dustin Fox pounded his opponents. The 285-pounder posted a 5-0 record with a major decision, three decisions and a forfeit victory. His win against Ohio State came over the second-ranked heavyweight wrestler in the nation, J.D. Bergman. Taking Their Place... For the first time in program history, the Wildcats placed in back-to-back years at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. The ninthranked Cats went 2-3 with wins over No. 8 Missouri and No. 11 UT-Chattanooga to claim eighth place again. National Recognition... The Wildcats entered with tons of returning talent from a squad that finished fourth at the 2007 NCAA Championships and started the season as one of the nation s teams to watch. A 3-1 dual start, along with strong performances at early tournaments, have caused NU to stay steady in the team rankings. The Cats started the season ranked fourth in the country in the preseason rankings by the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA poll, and now stand at No. 9. All this despite not having its top wrestlers for the beginning of the season and losing 184-lb. national champion Jake Herbert to an Olympic redshirt. The Power of Four... Four Wildcats appear in the top five of the latest InterMat poll. Brandon Precin is ranked No. 5 at 125, Ryan Lang and Mike Tamillow fourth at 149 lbs. and 197 lbs., respectively. Dustin Fox is the nation s top-ranked heavyweight. The Highs and the Lows... The two heavyweights of NU wrestling are a combined 32-2, while the lightest of the team is Both Brandon Precin at 125 lbs. and 197-pounder Mike Tamillow s only losses came at Midlands 45 in the championship and National Duals. Midlands Mania... Northwestern s posted a top-five finish at the 45th Midlands Championships for the secondstraight year. The tournament was the only competition for the Cats during break. A total of six Cats placed at the prestigious tournament, one higher than last year s total of five. Dustin Fox won the tournament at 285 lbs. Both Mike Tamillow and Brandon Precin placed second at 197 lbs. and 125 lbs., respectively. Dominic Marella finished fifth at 165 and Marty Gould and Nick Hayes both placed eighth at 157 lbs. and 174 lbs. Last year, Northwestern enjoyed multiple champions for the first time since Super Sophomore... In just his second year, Brandon Precin is dominating the college ranks with a record of Precin defeated three-time defending Midlands champion, Nick Simmons, in the semifinals of 125 lbs. and is ranked No. 5 in the country. Alone at the Top... Northwestern s 37-9 victory over NC State on 11/18/07 gave head coach Tim Cysewski his 125th win making him the all-time winningest coach in program history. Cysewski, now in his 188th season, passed Ken Kraft s mark of 124. Since then, Cysewski has continued to build upon his record with 137 wins and counting. NU Wrestling s Winningest Coaches Rank Coach Years Wins 1. Tim Cysewski 1990-present Ken Kraft Tom Jarmon Wes Brown / Jack Riley Tale of Two Wrestlers... Redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Dominic Marella has completely turned the tables on a career that did not start in the right direction. After beginning his career with a record of 4-13, Marella has started this season 24-9, nearly doubling his career win total.the sophomore also is ranked among the top-15 wrestlers by wrestlingreport.com at No. 14. Senior Leadership... Northwestern s senior class of Dustin Fox, Mike Tamillow, Nick Hayes and Ryan Lang are used to being in the lead, but the quartet of seniors are taking it to a new level this year with a combined record of 58-7 (.892). Fox, Tamillow and Lang return to the team as All- Americans and have all won a Midlands title in their time at NU, while Hayes is just six wins behind his career-high total of 22. All four are ranked in the top-12 of their weight classes and are expected to compete for NCAA Championships, setting the example for the classes to follow. Calling All Stars... Ryan Lang, Mike Tamillow and Dustin Fox were all invited to the All-Star Classic this year. The three invitees marked the first time Northwestern has ever received more than two bids. While Tamillow was the only to participate in the Classic, the trio remained as the nation s leader of bids. Pinning for the win... Wildcats have been pinning their opponents with regularity this season. Nearly half of Precin s 25 wins (11) have come by falls. Freshman Robert Kellogg and Dominic Marella have also pinned their opponents four times each, while Mike Benefiel, Bobby Joyce, Ben Kuhar, Ryan Lang and Mike Tamillow have three each. A total of nine Wildcats overall have multiple falls Pin Leaders 1. Brandon Precin Robert Kellogg 4 Dominic Marella 4 3. Mike Benefiel 3 Bobby Joyce 3 Ben Kuhar 3 Ryan Lang 3 Mike Tamillow 3 4. Marty Gould 2 That was quick... NU has recorded three pins so far this season before the first minute of the first period expired. Mike Tamillow has accomplished the feat twice once against Ohio State s Jason Cool in 0:37 and once against Andrejs Zalaiskains of Findlay in 0:45. Both came at the Michigan State Open on Nov. 11, Ryan Lang though, proved to be the most efficient Wildcat thus far as he downed Kaylen Baxter of Old Dominion at the Missouri Open in 0: Northwestern Wrestling NUsports.com 3

4 NU Signs Top-Notch Class... Northwestern s wrestling team has signed what is arguably its best class in school history. Coach Tim Cysewski and the Wildcats inked three incoming freshmen, including Jason Welch (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas), the number one prospect in the nation, Brian Roddy (Highland Heights, Ohio/St. Edward), the top-ranked prep wrestler nationally at 171 lbs. and Eric Galka (Hobart, Ind./Hobart), nationally the third-ranked wrestler at 130 lbs. This recruiting class is a testament to our current team, assistant coach Drew Pariano said. We obviously work very hard on the recruiting end but our recent success has a big role in this incoming class. Welch, the nation s top 160-lb. wrestler by W.I.N. Wrestling Magazine, Intermat Wrestling and Amateur Wrestling News, was named to the first-team of ASICS High School All-American Wrestling Team this season. He also voted honorable mention his sophomore year to the same team at 152 lbs. Following a junior campaign that netted a record of 50-0, Sports Focus honored him as being a top prep athlete of the Bay Area. Jason Welch is not only a great wrestler, he is a leader and a true studentathlete, Pariano said. His talents really showed when he competed at the senior level as a junior during the U.S. Open and made it through to the top 16 despite wrestling against older competition. In 2006, Welch earned a plethora of recognition as he finished first in the state at 160 lbs., first at the Ironman, first in Reno and was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler on five separate occasions. During his sophomore year, Welch compiled a record of 52-2 as he won the state title at 152 lbs., earned the top stop at the Junior Freestyle state tournament, first place at Junior FILA state titles, first in his high school section at NCS, third at the Ironman competition and first in Reno for the first of two-straight times. He also was named Most Outstanding Wrestler four times. Welch is an outstanding wrestler and his accomplishments speak for themselves, head coach Tim Cysewski said. Roddy joins the team as the fifth member of the team recently recruited from St. Edward High School. He joins the corps as yet another highly-touted recruit as the topranked wrestler in the state of Ohio. As last year s 171-lb. state champion, Roddy accumulated a record of 38-1 along the way to earning Academic All-Ohio honors, a thirdplace finish at the Ironman, a Medina tournament championship and was a member of the Ohio Division I State Championship team and the 2007 High School National Championship team. Roddy is one of the best upper weights to ever come out of the St. Edward program and with that school having won multiple national titles, we are very excited to see Roddy coming in, Pariano said. During his freshman and sophomore campaigns, Roddy had a record of 58-16, while earning two Academic All-State selections, a sectional and district championship his junior year and a place among the Junior National Freestyle All-Americans and the Cadet Freestyle All-American teams. The third member of the 2007 recruiting class, Galka has already experienced two undefeated high school seasons with two state championships to his credit. As both a freshman and junior, Galka finished the season with perfect records of 47-0 and 48-0, respectively. Both seasons ended with state championships. Eric Galka is a seasoned veteran at the age of 18, Pariano said. He trained at the Overtime School of Wrestling during his prep career and that shows us that he is committed to our sport. His outstanding freshman season also earned him a junior freestyle state championship, Cadet Freestyle state championship and the Central Regional championship in freestyle. A year later, Galka was named Cadet National All-American at 130 lbs. and followed that up the next year with, a selection among the Junior National All-Americans at 130 and was ranked the No. 2 recruit in the state of Indiana by Intermat Wrestling. This class has the makings to be one of the best classes in the country. The talent level of this recruiting class is through the roof, Cysewski said.
