3 3 THE MATCHUP A midweek 1211 loss to the Atlanta Blaze set up what promises to be an epic showdown with playoff positioning on the line for Saturday night s game against the Denver Outlaws. Chesapeake received a boost from the players returning from the 2018 FIL World Lacrosse Championships in Netanya, Israel on Thursday night. Lyle Thompson made his 2018 season debut and it didn t look like he missed a step, scoring a hat trick after displaying an array of moves and dodges to get past defenders. Canadian Josh Byrne also contributed a hat trick in the Bayhawks comeback attempt that fell short in the final minute of the game. What I was most proud of tonight is that our team never quit. We kept battling and fighting until the end, Head Coach and General Manager Dave Cottle said after the game. Twoway veteran midfielder Matt Abbott scored two goals on the night, including a highlight reel onehanded effort coming around goal line extended from behind the cage to get it past Blaze goalie Adam Ghitleman. The defense anchored by another impressive night in net from goalie Niko Amato, who made 17 saves to keep Chesapeake in the contest. The Bayhawks will now have to bounce back against a tough Outlaws team to regain some momentum before the start of the playoffs. We have to get back to playing winning lacrosse, which means sharing the ball and playing together, Cottle said. We are still in good position and control our own destiny. Denver will be wellrested Saturday night, coming to Annapolis having last played last Sunday against the leagueleading Dallas Rattlers. The game ended in thrilling fashion as rookie and 2018 Tewaaraton winner Ben Reeves won the game in the final seconds with a left handed speed dodge coming towards the middle of the field. The Outlaws won their last six prior games, a couple of them by large margins. The last time these teams played, Chesapeake won a shootout 2422 on Sunday, May 13. Former Virginia Cavalier attackman Steele Stanwick scored five goals to propel the highflying offense over Denver on the night, and combined with Byrne s four goals Chesapeake was tough to stop. HEADLINE: Lyle Thompson s Home Debut in Bayhawks Final Home Game with Playoffs on the Line The much anticipated home debut of Lyle Thompson will come against the thirdplaced Denver Outlaws on Saturday, July 28 th at NavyMarine Corps Memorial Stadium at 7:00pm EST. Thompson was integral in Chesapeake s attacking success last season producing 29 points (6 goals, 20 assists) in just six games for the Bayhawks. As the alltime point s leader in the history of college lacrosse, Thompson is known for his flair and an array of dazzling offensive moves. Lyle is a great player and he did some really good things tonight, Chesapeake Head Coach Dave Cottle said following the loss to Atlanta. We re glad to have Lyle back with the team and he will get better with every game going forward. The former Albany standout joined the Bayhawks last night after returning from the 2018 FIL World Lacrosse Championships in Netanya, Israel while earning bronze for the Iroquois National team. After finishing his indoor season with the Georgia Swarm, Thompson was kept out of the Bayhawks early season lineup with an injury. He finished the NLL season as the team s leader in points with 86 points (46 goals, 40 assists). His famous backhanded goals and flip passes never fail to amaze fans and stun defenses. The Onondaga Nation, New York, native also became the first ever backtoback Tewaaraton Award recipient following his senior season. In a freeflowing Albany offense, Thompson s talent shined brightest on his way to becoming the alltime leader in points (400) and assists (225) before graduating in He also broke the single season scoring record during his junior season, notching 128 points in an impressive campaign. Alongside fellow attackman Steele Stanwick and last year s MLL Rookie of the Year Josh Byrne, Thompson will add even more offensive firepower to Chesapeake s offense. While Chesapeake s two leading scorers Colin Heacock and Myles Jones play midfield, the Bayhawk offense now boasts talent and depth all over the field.
