1 Page 1 of 8 Tracking The Huskies Your Weekly Update on Hewitt-Trussville Athletics Boys Basketball Wins Thanksgiving Tournament Hewitt-Trussville Boys Basketball won the 2017 Leeds Greenwave Thanksgiving Classic in dramatic fashion on Tuesday November 21. The Huskies met up with Cornerstone in the championship game. Hewitt got off to a good start and took a lead into the locker room. Cornerstone fought back in the 3rd quarter and took a lead over the Huskies. Hewitt was down six points with two minutes left but came back to tie the game. The Huskies had the ball with seven seconds left. Malachi Moore took the ball to the basket and made an acrobatic shot at the buzzer to win the game. Bryant Howell led the Huskies with 12 points. Damon Harper added 10 points. The Huskies opened the tournament by playing Jackson-Olin in their first round game. Hewitt got off to a fast start and led at halftime. Coach Thomas' team continued to play well in the second half and won The Huskies played McAdory in the semifinal round. McAdory led after the first quarter, but Hewitt stormed back to take a lead into halftime. The Huskies pushed the lead to 20
2 Page 2 of 8 after three quarters and went on to win Hewitt (5-1) will be back in action on December 1 as they travel to Oak Mountain. Girls Basketball Falls in Bryant Bank Tournament Final The Hewitt-Trussville Girls Basketball team lost to Spain Park on Tuesday November 21 in the championship game of the Bryant Bank Thanksgiving Tournament. The teams went back and forth in the first half with both teams hitting big shots. The Huskies went on a run in the second quarter and took a four point lead into the locker room. Spain Park responded to take the lead in the 3rd quarter. Hewitt battled in the final quarter, but the Jaguars put the game away with some late free throws. London Coleman led the Huskies in scoring with 24 points. In the opening round, the Huskies started the tournament by beating Briarwood Hewitt controlled the game throughout as Erica Jones led the way with 22 points. In the tournament semifinals, the Huskies defeated Lee-Montgomery Coach Hunter's team trailed by one at halftime but came back in the third quarter to take control of the game. Leah Harrison hit four three-pointers on her way to a team high 23 points. Amiya Payne added 17 points for the winning team. The Huskies now have a 7-1 record on the year. 3 Page 3 of 8 Boys Swimming to Compete in AHSAA State Meet The Hewitt-Trussville Boys Swimming team will travel to Auburn this weekend to compete in the AHSAA State Meet. The Huskies have a team record of 29-5 this season. They are coming off a 6th place finish at the AHSAA Sectional meet. The State meet will be held on Friday and Saturday at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center. The following athletes qualified for the State meet: Drake Amick: 200 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay Will Bradley: 400 Free Relay Brandt Gooden: 50 & 100 Free, 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay Caleb Knox: 100 & 200 Free, 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay Noah Weissgerber: 200 Medley Relay Head Coach Molly Jones said, "I am proud of the swimmers we had qualify for state. 4 Page 4 of 8 The Hewitt-Trussville Wrestling team hosted the Hewitt Duals on November 22. The Huskies welcomed 14 teams for the event. Teams were split into four different pools to compete in three separate dual matches. Teams were then split into one of four brackets. Overall, each team had five matches against other schools. The Huskies won three matches and lost two matches for the day. HT vs Tuscaloosa County HT wins Match winners for the Huskies: Connor Smith, Grey Howard, Grant Howard, Robert Powell, Seth Hall, Gabe Hodge, Caleb Hammond, Lucas Reeves, Trevor Mastro, and Reagan Land HT vs Bob Jones Bob Jones wins Match winners for the Huskies: Caleb Hammond, Lucas Reeves, Connor Smith, and Grant Howard HT vs Chelsea HT Wins Match Winners for the Huskies: Reagan Land, Connor Smith, Grey Howard, Grant Howard, Robert Powell, Seth Hall, Gabe Hodge, and Caleb Hammond HT vs Oxford HT wins Match winners for the Huskies: Reagan Land, Connor Smith, Grey Howard, Maddox Golden, Grant Howard, Robert Powell, and Seth Hall HT vs Thompson Thompson wins Match winners for the Huskies: Reagan Land, Connor Smith, Grant Howard, and Gabe Hodge Bowling Preps for Busy Week
5 Page 5 of 8 The Hewitt-Trussville Bowling teams will be back in action this week. The Boys team currently has a 6-3 record and the Girls team has a 5-4 record. Both teams are 4-1 in area play. On Tuesday the teams will travel to Oak Mountain Lanes for the Warrior Classic. Teams participating include: Auburn, Hoover, Ramsay, Southside-Gadsden, The Capitol School, Thompson, Valley, and Vestavia. On Thursday, the Huskies will return to Sparetime in Trussville as they host Gardendale. Be sure to follow all HT Bowing news and results on Indoor Track Opens Season Saturday Indoor Track season will begin on Saturday for the Huskies. The team will compete in a total of six events over the next few months. The AHSAA State Meet will be held on February 2-3. All Indoor Track meets will be held at the Birmingham Crossplex. This weekend the team will be competing in the Magic City Invitational. The event will begin at 8am and will run until approximately 8pm.
6 Page 6 of 8 Middle School Wrestling Wins Tournament The Hewitt-Trussville Middle School Wrestling team, coached by Bill Strickland, went 4-0 to win the championship of the Thompson Thanksgiving Duals. The Huskies faced four teams in event.
