Ole Miss has placed in the top three in five of its tournaments, including a victory at the Hootie at Bulls Bay (March 5-7). In the final round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay, the Rebels fired a 69 (-9) to break a 7-year old school record and rally from a six-shot deficit. Junior Braden Thornberry enters the NCAA postseason as the defending national champion and reigning Fred Haskins Award winner. Thornberry is the No. ranked amateur in the world by Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com and No. by the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Thornberry is one of three finalists for the Ben Hogan Award, the first Hogan Award finalist in school history. He is also a semifinalist for the Jack Nicklaus Award and is on the Haskins Award Watch List. Thornberry ranks top nationally in the following categories: versus par (8th at -.), scoring average (th-69.88), par scoring (th-.97), birdies (8th-) and par 5 scoring (th-.5). Thornberry owns four individual victories this season, increasing his career total to a school-record. He earned medalist honors at the Shoal Creek Invitational, FAMC Intercollegiate at The Grove, Hootie at Bulls Bay and Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. Thornberry became a first team All-SEC honoree for the second straight season, becoming the sixth Rebel in school history to accomplish that feat. Thornberry is the only SEC golfer to earn conference golfer of the week accolades multiple times this season. Thornberry has played in three PGA Tour tournaments and one Web.com Tour tournament over the past year. In his PGA Tour debut, he tied for fourth at the 7 FedEx St. Jude Classic. Last month, he made his Web.com Tour debut at the North Mississippi Classic in Oxford, tying for nd. Freshman Cecil Wegener is coming off a runner-up finish at the SEC Championships, a career-best finish. Wegener fired a career-low 5 (-5), which included a personal-best 65 (-5) in round two, to sit tied atop the leaderboard after 5 holes. He fell to Florida s Andy Zhang on the third playoff hole. Wegener became the first Rebel in eight years to earn SEC All-Freshman honors. Wegener has finished in the top in three of the last four tournaments. 2 NCAA BRYAN REGIONAL THE MALLOY FILE HEAD COACH CHRIS MALLOY TH YEAR AT OLE MISS 7TH OVERALL Former Rebel standout golfer Chris Malloy is in his fourth season as the Ole Miss men s golf head coach. Malloy, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, returned to Oxford after four years as the head coach at the University of South Florida. As a player for the Rebels, he helped lead Ole Miss to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances in 999 and. Now, Malloy has led his alma mater back to national prominence. Through three seasons as head coach, Malloy has led Ole Miss to five tournament titles as a team to go along with nine wins by individual Rebels. Under Malloy s tutelage, Braden Thornberry became the first national champion in Ole Miss Golf history and earned the 7 Fred Haskins Award (nation s most outstanding collegiate golfer). Malloy coached Ole Miss to four tournament victories during the 6-7 season as the Rebels earned a berth to a NCAA Regional for the second time in the last three years. The team won the Franklin American Mortgage Company Intercollegiate at the Grove (Nashville, Tennessee), the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic (Atlanta, Georgia) and the Princeville Warrior Invitational (Kauai, Hawaii) last fall before claiming the Lamkin San Diego Classic (San Diego, California) in the spring. In two of those wins, Ole Miss shot 8 as a team for the second-best tournament score (5 holes) in school history. Following a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Regional in Austin, Texas, the Rebels advanced to the NCAA National Championship for the first time in 6 seasons. There, Thornberry used an -under 77 over four rounds to capture the individual national title. In year two, Malloy led the Rebels to their first tournament title since at the FAU Slomin Autism Invite. Ole Miss posted a team score of -under 8, its lowest total since posting a team score of 85 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, while Thornberry captured his first career title. Malloy also helped the Rebels post a secondplace finish at the Old Waverley Collegiate Championship, where Thornberry claimed his second title of the season. Senior Forrest Gamble was honored off the course, as he was named the SEC s 6 H. Boyd McWhorter Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and earned second team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors for the second-consecutive season. In his first season back in Oxford in -5, Malloy guided the Rebels to their first NCAA appearance since with a trip to the NCAA Regional in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Ole Miss finished th in the regional, while senior golfer Blake Morris finished in a tie for seventh as an individual. Malloy also helped the Rebels post a ninthplace team finish at the SEC Championships, Ole Miss best finish in the conference championships since. In the classroom, junior Forrest Gamble earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors and was named second team CoSIDA Academic All- American. USF advanced to its second-straight NCAA regional under Malloy and just the third in school history after a fourth-place finish at the American Athletic Conference Championships. The Bulls finished the season ranked No. in the nation by Golfweek, while sophomore Chase Koepkaearned Ping All-Region honors. In, Malloy guided a young group of Bulls to the school s first-ever BIG EAST tournament championship earning BIG EAST Coach of the Year honors. USF advanced to the NCAA Tallahassee Regional and came within one stroke of a berth to the NCAA championship rounds, falling to Oklahoma in a playoff. Prior to arriving at USF, Malloy spent four seasons as an assistant at Florida State where he played a significant role in the rise of the FSU men s program. The Seminoles won their first-ever ACC golf championship in 8, and, after leading at the end of the first round, finished third in the NCAA Championships in, the best finish in program history. The Seminoles were ranked in the nation s top 5 during the first two years of his coaching career, and Florida State s team stroke average dropped to a 5-year low 7.77 in 8. Malloy was a standout golfer at Ole Miss from 999-, leading the Rebels to a th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in 999 and an th-place finish at the NCAA East Regional in. A two-year letterman and team captain for Ole Miss, Malloy earned his bachelor s degree in hotel and restaurant management in and was named to the UMAA Academic Honor Roll during his time as a Rebel.
