Johnson Coliseum - Huntsville, Texas The UT Arlington men s basketball team looks to keep its postrseason tournament hopes alive as the Mavs travel to Huntsville to face Sam Houston State. UT Arlington is in the middle of a three-game week. UTA dropped a decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Monday night in Corpus Christi. The loss snapped a five-game win streak and put the Mavs in seventh place in the SLC standings with a 6-7 record, percentage points ahead of Lamar (5-6) and Nicholls State (5-7). The top two teams from each division and the teams with the next four best Conference records advance to the O Reilly Auto Parts Southland Conference Tournament, March 8-11 at the Campbell Center in Houston. UT Arlington has won six of its past eight games that began when the Mavs upended Sam Houston State on Jan.25. UTA has not defeated Sam Houston in the same season since when the Mavs defeated Sam Houston in triple overtime and The Mavs have started three freshmen - Matt Read, Cardell Hunter and Ro ger Guignard - during the last six games. Guignard is making a strong case for Southland Conference freshman of the year honors. The Mesquite native ranks second among the league s freshmen with 10.3 points per game. He could become the first Maverick to average in double figures as a freshman since Bill Washington in His 62 3-pointers are 12th on the UTA single-season list. The Mavs have started three freshmen in a game during the current four-game winning streak. It marks the first time since Dec. 7, 2000 (75-64 loss at UT-San Antonio) when freshmen Derrick Obasohan, Roy Johnson and Milos Nikolic started for the Mavericks. Four freshmen - Cardell Hunter, Guignard, Moffitt and Matt Read - have all started a game this season. Read had a career-high 11 points and five rebounds in his first career start against Austin College on Jan. 30. Hunter has started the past four games. Freshman Ro ger Guignard is averaging 10.3 points per game and is making a strong push for the SLC s freshman of the year honor. He would be the first Mav since Derrick Obasohan won the award in HOME GROWN Twelve players hail from Texas on the UT Arlington roster. Only sophomore guard Brandon Long (Richton Park, Ill.) is from out of state. Sophomore forward Anthony Vereen is originally from Hammond, La., but Page 5 played at Gulf Shores Academy in Houston before signing to play for the Mavericks. THE HUNT FOR 100 UT Arlington had scored 100 or more points in just one of the past 321 games before last week. The Mavs broke a string of 155 games without reaching 100 points when they defeated Austin College on Jan. 30. Prior to that the last 100-point game was a win over Hardin Simmons on Dec. 29, 2001, at Texas Hall. UTA trumped that with a win at Texas State on Feb. 3. It it was the highest scoring SLC game since Louisiana-Monroe defeated UT-San Antonio in overtime on Feb. 17, ROAD WINS RARE FOR MAVS UT Arlington looks for its fifth road win of the season at Sam Houston St. on Feb. 22. UTA has not won more than six away games since the season when the Mavs went 8-7. UT Arlington has posted a winning records on away games twice in program history and PUTTING IT ON THE LINE UT Arlington has steady its foul shooting during Southland Conference play. The Mavs are connecting on 70.6% (199-of-282) from the line in league play. UTA made 35- of-42 free throw (83.3%) in a win at
