2 5. Chairperson s report for 2017 Justin Pitt 2017 Chairman s report The Sporting and Cultural Association was formed to support all forms of sport and cultural pursuits linked to College students. In 2017, as in previous years, the key role for the association was to support local netball and basketball. In the past, we have also supported Hills Hockey and Equestrian events. Helena Hornets Netball Club had another successful season of winter netball this year, with three teams from Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12 making it into the finals. Congratulations to these teams and particularly the Year 9 team that won the grand final for their division. Students aged from 6 to 18 participated in the Saturday Winter competition during Terms Two and Three and the Tuesday evening spring competition in Term Four. Both girls and boys play netball, although there are some restrictions on the boy s competitions. It was pleasing to hear that more than 80 players from Years 3-12 and their parents were at the annual wind-up held in the Year 6 area at the College. Congratulations to Megan Broad on receiving the Outstanding Service to the Club Award, for her role as Club Secretary over the past four years. Congratulations also to all of the players that received awards for their efforts in Many thanks to the coaches, team managers and committee members for all their time and dedication, as well as the parents who support the players each week. Without the commitment of the many volunteers involved in the Helena Hornets Netball Club we would not have such a successful and thriving netball competition for our students. As in previous years I acknowledge the continued efforts of the Helena Hornets committee members for their support of netball in the Eastern Hills and their devotion to supporting the development of Helena College students with the characteristics that build positive sporting behaviours and encourage fair play. In 2017 Helena Basketball registered 14 teams ranging from Years 1-12 for both boys and girls in the Hills Raiders Basketball Association summer competition. Games are played on Friday evenings for younger students and Tuesday evenings for the older years at the Mundaring Recreation Ground. With the completion of the new indoor stadium at the Mundaring Recreation Ground, the inaugural Winter competition will commence on 1 May The competition has proven very popular with many teams registering to date. Helena Basketball will be registering teams across all year groups for both boys and girls. Senior students from the College have continued in the roles of coaching our junior teams, which is encouraged by the club and appreciated by the parents. As in previous years I commend all of these volunteers for their commitment to the College s junior students and the positive role modelling they have displayed. I would also like to once again thank the Helena Basketball committee for their hard work to support local basketball and giving Helena College students the opportunity to play alongside their classmates. This in turn builds greater relationships between our students and creates a sense of belonging within the College. As I have mentioned in previous year s reports, this level of participation would not be possible without strong club leadership and continued parent support. Treasurer s report 2017 Karen Adams The opening bank balance was $ Helena Hornets made a surplus of $ Helena Basketball made a surplus of $7650 at year end (31 December 2018) although the Association fees had not been invoiced by the end of the year. These have now been paid along with trophy expenses and the collection of late fees paid brings the overall surplus to $2517. When basketball was introduced 3 years ago we kept both sporting entities using the same bank account as Helena College took all the money coming in and paid out the expenses and then just transferred the surplus into the Bankwest account at the end of each year. I would like to now suggest that the basketball teams open their own account to enable people to pay into that account for the collection of fees and payment of expenses. With this account I believe the signatories should be the Chairman, Treasurer and the co-ordinators both Darlington and Glen Forrest campuses and the authorisation should be on-line with the Treasurer being one signatory and any of the other three as the second. Once this account is opened the Helena Hornets treasurer and myself can organise to transfer the basketball money that is currently in the Bankwest account into the new account. 4 7. Auditor s report for 2017 Auditor s report - the report from the Auditors was tabled. (see appendix A) 8. Election of Office Bearers for 2018 Justin Pitt thanked all outgoing committee members for their contribution. Justin Pitt handed the chair to Deputy Chair Joe Kendall who called for nominations. The following nominations were unanimously accepted. Appointment of auditor for 2018 Auditplus Solutions were again nominated to audit the accounts for this year. All were in agreement. Helena College Council Inc will be putting their auditing out to tender. It was agreed that who ever Helena uses the HCS&CA will use the same as we are not charged for this service. 10. General business 10.1 Helena Hornets Netball Charlotte Brown Helena Hornets Netball Club encourages fun, fitness and friendship for girls and boys aged 6 to 18, although there are some restrictions on boys competitions. Teams participate in the Saturday winter competition during Terms Two and Three and the Tuesday evening spring competition in Term Four. There is no netball during Term One. The Club had another successful season of winter netball this year, with three teams making it into the finals. HH6 (Year 7) was knocked out in the first week and HH1 (Year 12) in the second week but HH4 (Year 9) was crowned division winner. All achieved runner-up trophies. More than 80 players from Years 3-12 and their parents were at the annual wind-up where a number of awards recognised this year s efforts. The Outstanding Service to the Club Award was presented to Megan Broad, who has been the club secretary for over four years. Megan has kept the committee in AGM Tuesday, 13 March 2018 HCS&CA! 4

5 order, has been an invaluable support to the Club President and has had significant input into the club over several years. The Umpiring Shield went to Sophie Brown (Year 9) for the second year, while the Club Ambassador Award was presented to Cate Snelling (Year 9) for her commitment to upholding the club s values. While the junior players received individual trophies, senior trophies were awarded to: HH6 (Year 7) Fairest and Best Mia Finning; Coach s Award Ashleigh Frame; Player s Player Sophia Stevenson. HH 5 (Year 8) Most Consistent Elle White; Rising Star Mikayla Painter; Most Improved Abbie Pinto HH 4 (Year 9) Fairest and Best Cate Snelling; Coach s Award Jacinta Villani; Encouragement Award: Aria Parsonson HH 3 (Year 9-10) Fairest and Best Kendal Smith; Runner up Fairest and Best Caitlin Shirley and Freya Stevens. HH 2 (Year 11-12) Most Consistent Rhiannon Manning; Most Improved Rachel Newsome; Runner up Most Improved Trinity Ingram. HH 1 (Year 12) Fairest and Best Olivia Marshall; Runner Up Fairest and Best Bernadette Sampson; Coach s Award Darcy Hillman. 6 10.2 Helena Basketball Ruth Gallagher Helena Basketball has 13 teams ranging from year 1 to year 12 for boys and girls in the Hills Raiders Summer competition, which is played at the Mundaring Recreation grounds during terms four and one. The season has seen the introduction of the under 8 s competition which has proved to be very popular with the younger players and Helena College has entered 3 teams. The Darlington campus was also treated to a basketball clinic that was run by Hills Raiders and has improved the number of players involved in the competition. Years 1 to 5 play on Friday nights and the older teams play on a Tuesday night. Building of the indoor multi-sport courts has started at Mundaring Recreation grounds so we are looking forward to being able to enter teams into a Winter competition. No experience is necessary for basketball as training is provided. Normally teams train at either the Darlington Campus or the Glen Forrest campus once a week. Some of the older teams choose not to train and to concentrate on their schooling but still play basketball for the fun of it. Helena Basketball singlets are supplied but are given back at the end of the season and players are required to purchase their own black basketball shorts. Suitable sports footwear is to be worn and expensive basketball shoes are not a requirement. Any socks can be worn. Under 14 (and older) players are given the opportunity to attend umpiring clinics and players can be paid for umpiring during the season. Helena Basketball encourages senior students to coach junior teams and are required to participate in coaching clinics throughout the season. All teams are required to have an adult team Manager. Helena Basketball is a member of the. Although associated with the College, Helena Basketball is run entirely by volunteers (i.e. players parents and senior students), including coaches and managers.
