The game against Albany will be Cornell s 11th NCAA tournament appearance in the last 12 seasons It will also be the 27th NCAA tournament appearance in school history, with the Big Red posting a record with 13 Final Four appearances. Both teams won their conference titles, with Cornell earning a share of the Ivy League regular season crown for the third consecutive year, while the Great Danes have won three straight America East titles. The game will be the first in the history of the series to be played on either the Cornell or Albany campus, as both previous meetings have been neutral site games. The Big Red and Albany squared off earlier this season, a 16-9 win for Cornell, at the seventh annual Patriots Cup, held at SMU s Ford Field in Dallas, Texas. Prior to this season, Cornell and the Great Danes had met just once before, as the Big Red earned a overtime victory in the quarterfinals of the 2007 NCAA Tournament held in Princeton, N.J. No. 6 Albany will be the eighth contest played against a nationally-ranked opponent for the Big Red this season. Cornell is 3-4 with wins over No. 6 Yale, No. 8 Albany, and No. 14 Princeton. The Big Red also defeated Colgate, which is ranked this week at No. 12, but was not ranked at the time of their meeting on March 17. Cornell has won its first round NCAA game and advanced to the quarterfinals seven times since The Big Red has won 20 consecutive games vs. the America East dating back to a 6-5 loss to UMBC during the 2001 season. UALBANY: Cornell holds a 2-0 lead in the all-time series with Albany, defeating the Great Danes in overtime of 2007 NCAA tournament quarterfinals, held in Princeton, N.J., as well as winning the match-up earlier this season in the seventh annual Patriot Cup held in Dallas, Texas. LOOKING AT THE GREAT DANES: Albany earned the automatic bid for the America East, bringing a 15-2 overall record (6-0 America East) and one of the most dominant offensive players in the country in Lyle Thompson into Saturday s contest. Thompson finished the America East championship game with nine points against Stony Brook to go over 100 points for the third consecutive year. But the team doesn t rely solely on Thompson, as Connor Fields and Seth Oakes will enter the weekend with 77 and 61 points, respectively. After trailing 3-1 midway through the first quarter, the Big Red went on a 10-2 run to take control of the game en-route to the decisive victory. Connor Buczek led the Big Red with five goals and one assist, while Matt Donovan finished with five points for the third straight game with three goals and two assists. After playing a pair of games indoors, Christian Knight showed how good he can be in the light of day, making 14 saves, including nine in the final quarter as the Big Red held off Albany s comeback bid. Domenic Massimilian was solid in the face-off circle, winning 17-of-29 restarts and picking up 11 ground balls. He was helped on the wings by Chris Cook, who picked up seven ground balls. Albany (1-1) was led by Lyle Thompson s two goals and two assists. Cornell defender Jordan Stevens did an outstanding job on Thompson, who also finished the day with nine turnovers. In cage, Blaze Riorden made 12 saves in the loss. Cornell held the advantage in shots (43-33), shots on goal (28-23) and ground balls (40-38) and went 4-for-5 on man-up chances. Cornell also cleared the ball on 17-of-19 attempts, while Albany was successful on just 17-of-21. HOW D WE GET HERE: With its 10th-ranked RPI and its fifth-best strength of schedule in the nation, the Big Red earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as the number eight seed after finishing the regular season with a 10-5 record overall and mark of 4-2 in the Ivy League. Moran Head Coach of Cornell Men s Lacrosse Matt Kerwick was named the Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Men s Lacrosse at Cornell University on June 11, Kerwick, who served in the position on an interim basis during the 2014 season, becomes the 11th head coach in the programs 122-year history. Kerwick s 2014 squad exceeded all expectations. Cornell was selected 17th overall in the 2014 Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Preseason Poll, marking the first time since being tabbed 11th in 2003 that Cornell was chosen to finish outside the top 10. Once the Big Red season began on Feb. 22, the team rose in the USILA poll for four straight weeks before earning a No. 2 ranking on March 24. Altogether, the team stayed in the top 10 for five straight weeks. The Big Red opened the season with a 9-0 record and was the last undefeated team in the nation. The 9-0 start was the best by a first-year coach in Cornell history since Ned Harkness won 22 straight. The 2014 team finished the year with an 11-5 record overall and a mark of 5-1 in the Ivy League. The team won the Ivy League title and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, where it fell to national semifinalist Maryland on a goal scored with two seconds to play in the contest. Cornell finished in the season ranked first in the Ivy League in points per game, scoring margin, scoring offense, ground balls per game, and shot percentage, while ranking second in the league in assists per game, caused turnovers per game, face-off winning percentage, man-up offense and fewest turnovers per game. Under Kerwick s direction, Cornell swept the major Ivy League awards with Connor Buczek and Christian Knight earning Player and Rookie of the Year honors, respectively. The Big Red also had seven All-Ivy selections, including four first-team honorees, and five All-Americans. Prior to his stint as interim head coach, Kerwick was named an assistant coach for the Big Red for the 2013 season. In his first year, Kerwick helped Cornell to a 14-4 record overall and an undefeated Ivy League championship with a mark of 6-0. His work with the offense helped the Big Red to rank first in the country in scoring margin (5.5), second overall in scoring offense (14.56 gpg) and fourth overall in assists per game (7.72). Kerwick helped attackman Rob Pannell 13 to become the NCAA Division I all-time career points leader (354) and with 60 goals and 55 assists, respectively, while Steve Mock and Pannell became the first pair of Cornell teammates to register 50 goals and 50 assists in the same season since Mike French (65 goals) and Eamon McEneaney (61 assists)in Kerwick spent the 2012 season with Georgetown, working as an associate head coach on Dave Urick s staff. Kerwick played for Urick at Hobart College, where he was a two-time All-American, won four consecutive Division III national championships, and was named the 1989 NCAA Tournament MVP. Prior to his time at Georgetown, Kerwick accumulated 15 years of head coaching experience with stops at Jacksonville, Hobart, Alfred and Randolph-Macon. During his time as head coach at those institutions, he helped his teams earn three NCAA tournament berths (Hobart - 2; Alfred 1), two Upstate Tournament appearances (Alfred) and one conference championship (Hobart). While at Hobart, he was named the 2002 Patriot League Coach of the Year and was also selected as the ECAC Co-Coach of the Year in As the head coach at Alfred, he was named both the 1996 Super Six Lacrosse League Coach of the Year Award and the1997 Babe Kraus Division III Coach of the Year. Kerwick graduated from Hobart in 1990 with a degree in economics. An all-around athlete, he was a four-year letter winner on both the Statesmen hockey and lacrosse teams, serving as captain for both squads as a senior. Following graduation, he played for the MLL s Baltimore Thunder, earning an All-Star selection in Kerwick has strong ties to Cornell as both his parents Thomas and the late Patricia Kerwick, as well as his sister Ann, all graduated from Cornell. With its share in 2015, Cornell has won a share of 12 of the last 13 Ivy League titles. The Big Red also has the best regular season Ivy League record of any team in the conference at TWO GOALS FOR TODAY: There are only six midfielders in Ivy League history to record both 40 goals in a single season and 100 goals in a career, and Cornell s Connor Buczek is just two goals away from joining that elite group. Buczek has 104 career goals and 38 so far this season. CLASS OF 2015: The 14-member Class of 2015 has seen great success during its time on East Hill. With the Big Red clinging to a slim 3-1 lead at halftime Buczek took over the game. FEWEST GOALS: Christian Knight allowed just one goal in 51:27 of action in an 8-2 victory over Dartmouth on March 28. The single goal allowed was the fewest by Knight, and the fewest by a Cornell goalie playing more than 45 minutes in a game since Matt McMonagle held Army to a single goal during the 2006 season The two goals surrendered by the Big Red was the fewest since that same 13-1 victory over the Black Knights. Only three other teams in Division I have had roads swings of six or more games to open the season: 1) Marquette 10 games 2) Cornell, Canisius, Manhattan 6 games MLL DRAFT FACTS: Senior midfielder Connor Buczek was selected second overall by the Florida Launch in the 2015 Major League Lacrosse Draft becoming the Big Red s highest ranked draft pick since Rob Pannell was taken first overall by the New York Lizards in Cornell had a pair of third round selections in senior attackman Matt Donovan (18th Chesapeake Bayhawks) and senior defensemen Jordan Stevens. (21st Rochester Rattlers). Cornell was one of eight schools with three or more players drafted, but of those eight schools, only Notre Dame also featured a first round draft pick (Jack Near seventh overall). Since having a program-high five players selected in the 2007 MLL Draft, the Big Red has had multiple picks in five of the last nine drafts. ON THE WORLD STAGE: The Big Red had 10 former or current players suit up on the field at this past summer s 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships, including junior Brennan Donville, Jesse Gamble 11 and Jason Noble 13, who took home the gold medal with Team Canada. RECAPPING 2014: Under the direction of Interim Head Coach Matt Kerwick, the 2014 squad exceeded all expectations. Cornell was selected 17th overall in the 2014 Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Preseason Poll, marking the first time since being tabbed 11th in 2003 that Cornell was chosen to finish outside the top 10. Once the Big Red season began on Feb. 22, the team rose in the USILA poll for four straight weeks before earning a No. 2 ranking on March 24. Altogether, the team stayed in the top 10 for five straight weeks. The Big Red opened the season with a 9-0 record and was the last undefeated team in the nation. The 9-0 start was the best by a first-year coach in Cornell history since Ned Harkness won 22 straight and the team finished with an 11-5 record overall and a mark of 5-1 in the Ivy League. The team won the Ivy League title and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, where it fell to national semifinalist Maryland on a goal scored with two seconds to play in the contest.
