However, Tech has taken two out of the last three, both being four-set wins in Lubbock. Texas Tech is coming off a thrilling five-set comeback win at Baylor on Wednesday. The win marked the program s first in Waco since 2004, and gave Tech its best start in conference play since beginning the 2000 conference slate 5-0. Kansas State finished its non-conference schedule with an impressive 13-1 record, tallying wins over Michigan, Arkansas and Marshall, among others. With 14 wins each, Texas Tech and Kansas State are tied for the most overall wins in the Big 12 this season. The Wildcats started conference play with a couple nail-biters, falling to Baylor in five sets and defeating Kansas in five sets. The win at Kansas was Kansas State s first road conference win since Kansas State is a force at the net, ranking second in NCAA Division-1, with team blocks. K-State s Natali jones leads the Big 12 in blocks per set, with With a win, Texas Tech would guarantee itself a winning season, something the Red Raiders have not experienced since TEXAS TECH PROBABLE STARTERS (based on 2014 statistics) 14-1, 2-1 Big , 1-1 Big 12 LAUREN DOUGLASS 6-2 MB/rs SO BREEANN DAVID 5-11 OH SR JENNA ALLEN 5-10 OH JR emily ruetter 5-11 SET jr MIKIA MILLS 5-11 MB SR alyssa ybanez 5-11 oh fr RACHEL BRUMMITT 5-6 LIB SR k/s 2.81 k/s 3.26 k/s 3.09 k/s 0.19 k/s 2.19 k/s 1.53 ace/s 0.45 HIT %.336 HIT %.166 HIT %.164 A/S 9.70 HIT %.295 HIT %.295 Ast/S 0.67 d/s 0.67 d/s 1.47 d/s 2.23 d/s 1.81 d/s 0.47 d/s 0.51 d/s 5.19 b/s 1.05 b/s 0.79 b/s 0.44 b/s 0.19 b/s 1.05 b/s 0.76 REC%.968 K/S designates kills per set HIT % designates hitting percentage D/S designates digs per set B/S designates blocks per set A/S designates assists per set. 1

3 who s got next? Texas Tech will hit the road next Thursday, Oct. 9, to face the No. 2 Texas Longhorns, in Austin. First serve at Gregory Gym is at a time to be determined. red raiders, extra seasoning In 2014, The Red Raiders return 14 letterwinners from the injury-riddled 2013 season, 12 of those being upperclassmen, creating arguably the most experienced roster Flora has had at Tech. They aren t just experienced, they re talented. Rachel Brummitt and Bree David both played for the U.S. collegiate national team this summer, gaining valuable experience and leadership intangibles. Mixed with a talented crop of incoming freshmen, Tech will eye its first winning season since 2001, in killer instinct When the Red Raiders amass more kills than their opponent, it almost always results in a win. Tech was 9-2 in such games in 2013, 11-0 in 2014 and is 41-4 in such games under Flora. Bree David and Jenna Allen both rank in the Big 12 s top 10 in kills. David opened conference play by matching a career high, with 23 kills, in Tech s victory over TCU. THE DENVER CITY HAMMER Not shy from coining nicknames, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora has long referred to senior outside hitter Breeann David as the Denver City Hammer. Named for both her hometown of nearby Denver City, Texas, as well as her hard-hitting ability, David enters her senior year as arguably Tech s most important offensive weapon, after she led the team with a 3.4 kills per set average a year ago. David is fourth on the all-time Big 12 active list in both kills (757) and attacks (2,076). Her father, Stan David, was a standout football player for the Red Raiders and eventual 1984 NFL Draft selection by the Buffalo Bills. Her mother, Megan David (formerly McGuire), also starred on the volleyball team while at Tech where she still ranks in the top 10 in most career blocking categories. Her younger brother, Clancy David, is a walk-on on the Tech football team. national names Red Raider seniors Rachel Brummitt and Breeann David each played for the U.S. collegiate national volleyball team in the summer of David was invited to compete in the European Tour that ran July 8-19 with visits to Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, and Brummitt competed in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships held June 22-July 1 in Minneapolis, Minn. Both players previously traveled to the U.S. Olympic Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. for Team USA tryouts in February. They were two of 248 athletes to compete in the tryouts that were for both the U.S. Women s National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team. dishing it out Junior setter Emily Ruetter, in just over two years, has become one of Tech s most prolific setters in school history. She just fell short of entering Tech s all-time top-10 for single-season assists in 2013, but she ranks seventh career-wise in school history, with 2,461 assists, and is second on the Big 12 s all-time active list. Even with the intense competition Tech has at setter in 2014, Ruetter will still find herself climbing the alltime lists. ACE IN THE HOLE Senior All-American Rachel Brummitt is not only a force to be reckoned with on the serve receive, she can do damage from the service line herself. Her 26 service aces rank third in the Big 12 and 26th nationally. starting fast Texas Tech volleyball had a historic start to 2014, winning its first 13 games. The Red Raiders have not started 13-0 since 1996, when they began the season Texas Tech s best start in school history is a 16-0 beginning to the 1976 season, a year in which Tech also put together its longest winning streak in school history, 17 games. Tech s 13-game winning streak was only the eighth double-digit winning streak in school history, and this marked the fifth time such a streak has begun the season was Tech s third-best start in school history. Tech s 14-1 record is also the school s best start since a 16-1 record to begin the 2000 campaign. Douglass was named the MVP of the Lone Star Showdown, where she amassed 41 kills, including a careerhigh 17 in Tech s thrilling comeback against Weber State, a game in which she also had eight blocks. She hit.383 for the weekend, which was good enough to move her to No. 1 in the Big 12 in hitting percentage in Douglass becomes the first Red Raider to win two of the Big 12 s three weekly awards, having already won the conference s Offensive Player of the Week honor on Sept. 1. Douglass was named MVP of the Titan Classic in her debut as a Red Raider and first weekend of NCAA competition, leading Tech to the tournament title. She recorded double-digit kills in each of the three matches, ranking sixth in the Big 12 with 35 overall kills, but second in the Conference in hitting percentage, at an impressive.544 for the week. She also averaged 1.64 blocks in TTU s opening weekend. She recorded double-digit kills in each of the Red Raiders wins, hitting over.600 in two of the matches. Douglass becomes the first Red Raider to win the award since its inception, in The Red Raiders claimed 11 Player of the Week honors from SWING AWAY A pair of Red Raiders sit in the Big 12 s top 10 in kills per set. Breeann David sits at No. 5, at 3.26, while Jenna Allen ranks 10th, with big-time BIG 12 The Big 12 will once again be one of the toughest volleyball conferences nationally this season as the league is boosted by preseason favorite and second-ranked Texas, while Kansas, Oklahoma and Kansas State received votes in the poll as well. The Big 12 has earned four or more bids to the NCAA Tournament in each season of the conference s existence. MARQUEE WINS At the Lone Star Showdown, Don Flora picked up his 50th win as Tech s head coach when the Red Raiders came back from 0-2 to beat Weber State, and the 3-1 victory against Air Force on Sept. 20 marked the 800th win for the Texas Tech volleyball program. gettin diggy with it In only one season, Rachel Brummitt went from a relatively unknown transfer to a school record holder and one of the top liberos in the Big 12. She has already broken her own school and conference records with a 39-dig performance in four sets against Air Force. She has been tabbed as Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week twice this season. Her five weekly defensive awards over her career rank fifth in Big 12 history. She only needs 169 digs to become the school s all-time leader, after already logging 301 this season. ttu all-time dig leaders 1. Tonight s win was the first win in Waco for Texas Tech under head coach Don Flora, and the first for the program since A crowd of 1,165 at the Ferrell Center watched the Red Raiders (14-1, 2-1) get off to a quick start, taking the first set, 26-24, behind seven total team blocks. Baylor responded in the second by holding Tech to a hitting percentage of -.027, on their way to tying the match with a win. Baylor (10-6, 1-1) kept the momentum rolling in the third, becoming the first team this season to take set No. 3 from Tech, The Red Raiders responded in a big way, taking the fourth set, 25-15, behind another seven total blocks. In the fifth set, Baylor sprinted out to a 6-2 lead, but Tech battled back with a 6-0 run to take a 9-7 lead. Baylor then went on a 5-0 run of its own to take a 12-9 lead. The Red Raiders swung the momentum pendulum back in their direction with a 4-0 run to take a lead, before finishing the comeback, Texas Tech is now 4-0 this season in five-set matches. When we fell behind in the fifth, I knew we could beat them to eight before the switch, Flora said. We ve battled like that all year, especially in the fifth set, so when we got back into that set, I knew we could get it done. I m so proud of each and every one of them for the way they fought back. Just a great win. Offensively, Jenna Allen led the way with 15 kills. Two other Red Raiders joined her in the double digits--alyssa Ybanez recorded a career-high 13 kills, and Mikia Mills turned in 11 of her own. Tech had 52 kills compared to 64 from Baylor. Emily Ruetter went the distance at the setter position, racking up 45 assists and eight digs. It says so much about this team to get this win, Flora said. Baylor is such a tough place to play, so it was great to quiet the crowd at some big points. So many people across the board stepped up tonight. Meghan Stacy, Alyssa Ybanez had a career night and Whitney Ford gave us some great points. The list goes on. We ve already seen that road wins will be at a premium in the conference this year, so this was such a huge win for us. On the defensive side, the Red Raiders had their best performance of the season at the net, totaling 19 total team blocks, led by nine from Lauren Douglass and eight from Mills. Texas Tech held Baylor to a hitting percentage of.140, while totaling 73 digs--23 of which came from Rachel Brummitt. Carlie Foust also hit double digits in digs, recording 12. Brummitt made perhaps the play of the night with the match tied at 12 in the fifth set. After getting hit in the face by a Baylor attack, she dove to reach the deflection from Ruetter, sending it over the net to keep the point alive, a point Tech eventually won. Tech is now 12-1 this season when holding its opponent under a hitting percentage of.200. Rachel Brummitt (above) ranks third in TTU history in career digs. Texas Tech will return home on Saturday, Oct. 4, to take on Kansas State. First serve is set for 3 p.m., at the United Supermarkets Arena. 5
