NIU has taken on the top-ranked team twice before in its FBS history. NIU Head Coach Rod Carey is 25-6 since taking over prior to the Huskies 2013 Orange Bowl game, and has a 3-0 record as a head coach versus teams from the Big Ten Conference. NIU has played in 71 games since the start of the 2010 season, the most by any team in the nation. The Huskies and Oregon are the only two teams in the country to win 11 or more games in each of the last five seasons. NIU is the winningest Division I program in Illinois all-time. The Huskies have won three Mid-American Conference championships and are the only FBS team in the country to have played in five straight league championship games since Drew Hare became the first Huskie quarterback to throw for 300-ormore yards in back-to-back games since NIU became an FBS program in 1969 with 360 and 358-yard efforts versus UNLV and Murray State. North Dakota transfer Kenny Golladay has quickly become Hare s favorite target with 17 catches for 357 yards and two scores, including a nine-catch, 213-yard day versus UNLV to earn MAC Player of the Week honors, and five catches of 25 yards or more. 1983, 2011, 2012 & 2014 MAC Champions Seven Consecutive Bowl Appearances 1

3 NIU FOOTBALL 2015 NIU Head Coach Rod Carey Now in his third season as the head football coach at Northern Illinois University, Rod Carey has already made his mark on NIU. Since being promoted to head coach on December 2, 2012, just minutes before NIU learned that the team had earned a historic bid to the 2013 Orange Bowl, Carey has proven himself worthy of his promotion. His NIU teams are 25-6, giving the Wisconsin native more wins as a MAC head coach than the likes of Urban Meyer (Bowling Green), Gary Pinkel (Toledo), Jerry Kill (NIU) or Brian Kelly (Central Michigan) compiled in their first two years in the league. He entered this season tied for eighth on NIU s all-time coaching wins list, and now needs just one victory to surpass Bill Mallory and Jerry Ippoliti for sixth place. In 2013, his first year as head coach, Carey led NIU to an undefeated regular season that included two wins over Big Ten Conference teams a lastminute win over Iowa in the season opener and a blowout victory at Purdue. Last season, the Huskies recorded a win over Northwestern, and won NIU s fifth consecutive MAC Division title and the school s fourth MAC championship. Carey became the third NIU mentor to be named the MAC Coach of the Year, following in the footsteps of greats Mallory (1983) and Joe Novak (2002), and was a semifinalist for the Maxwell Football Club Coach of the Year Award. He is the first league coach to win two games over Big Ten Conference opponents in one season and has a school-record three Big Ten wins. Carey ascended to head coach rapidly during his tenure at NIU. He served as offensive line coach his first year in DeKalb. In his second season, Carey had to build an offensive line from scratch in 2012, before taking over offensive coordinator duties after the 2012 season opener. The Huskies went on to win their next 12 games. Prolific offensive production, leading to four consecutive 11-plus win seasons, has been a hallmark of Carey s five seasons in DeKalb. In his first season at NIU, he coached a pair of All-American offensive lineman as center Scott Wedige and left tackle Trevor Olson were named All-Americans. Tommylee Lewis joined Jimmie Ward and Jordan Lynch, earning All-America honors in 2013, while Lynch s historic career was capped by a third-place finish in the Heisman Trophy voting. Carey joined the Huskies in 2011 after three seasons coaching the offensive line at the University of North Dakota. Prior to going to North Dakota, Carey spent the 2007 season as the offensive line coach at Illinois State. From , Carey served on the coaching staff at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where he was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. In all, Carey coached 26 allconference selections and seven All-Americans during his time at UW-Stout. Carey began his collegiate coaching career at the University of Minnesota ( ) where he helped the Gophers to their first bowl game in over a decade with a trip to the 1999 Sun Bowl. Prior to UM, he spent four seasons in the high school ranks at his alma mater, Wayzata (Minn.) High School, from A three-year starter at center for Indiana during his collegiate playing days, Carey served as a team captain and won IU s Corby Davis Outstanding Offensive Player Award as a senior. He earned his bachelor s degree from Indiana in Carey and his wife Tonya have two children, daughter Kennedi (11) and son Charlie (8) HUSKIE COACHING STAFF Offensive Coord./Quarterbacks...Bob Cole... 6 HUSKIE STADIUM S 50 GREATEST PLAYERS As part of the celebration surrounding the 50th Anniversary of Huskie Stadium, NIU has selected the Top 50 NIU Players in stadium history and announced one player each day over a 10-week period. The first 40 players were revealed in random order via the Huskies social media outlets. The 50 Greatest Players in Huskie Stadium history were presented by Compass Mortgage. NIU then counted down the Top 10 players in reverse order leading up to the 2015 season opener on September 5th. On Friday, Sept. 4, 2013 Heisman finalist and Orange Bowl quarterback Jordan Lynch was named the top player in the 50-year history of Huskie Stadium. Each player selected played at least one season in Huskie Stadium, the 50-year old facility on the west side of the NIU campus that opened Nov. 6, 1965 with a 48-6 NIU win over Illinois State on Homecoming.
