JMU HISTORY IN CAA CHAMPIONSHIP JMU is making its 24th appearance in the CAA Championship since joining the league in The Dukes are (.729) all-time in the CAA postseason, claiming a conference-best 10 tournament titles. That included them winning last year s crown at Towson. JMU has been either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in each of the last nine seasons, including the No. 1 seed in four, including the last three years. The program is 13-3 when holding the No. 1 seed and the Dukes have advanced to the title game in seven of eight appearances as the top seed. This is the fifth time JMU has hosted the CAA Championship and first since The Dukes have won the title in three of the four times it previously served as the host. By virtue of the win at Towson on April 28, JMU will also host the 2019 Championship next season. Breaking down JMU s records against the tournament field, the Dukes are 6-1 against Delaware, 1-0 against Elon and 3-3 against Towson. UD is the only team to beat the Dukes in a tourney at JMU (1995). It is led by First Team All-CAA midfielder Becky Gohsler, who led the team in scoring with 34 goals and 15 assists. JMU #5 IN THE POLLS, #4 IN NCAA RPI Despite stretching its win streak to eight games for the second time this year, JMU fell one spot to No. 4 in both the media and coaches poll. However, JMU moved up from No. 5 to No. 4 in this week s NCAA RPI ranking. The drop in rankings came following JMU s win at then-no. 6 Towson (17-16) on April 28 but a day later saw North Carolina upset previously unbeaten Boston College to win the ACC title. This season is the first since 2011 that JMU has been ranked in the top five and the team s No. 2 ranking earlier in the Nike/USL poll was tied for the best ranking ever, matching a 2000 Coaches ranking. SINGLE-SEASON RECORD WATCH Two players have set single-season records this year in Kristen Gaudian and Haley Warden. Gaudian set the season record for free-position goals (21), while Warden owns the mark for draw controls (76). Gaudian has won 64 draws, which is fourth in JMU history and 12 back of Warden s pace. Katie Kerrigan has tallied 42 assists, which is third in single-season history and seven off Monica Zabel s 2012 record (49). Warden set the single-season record for caused turnovers last season, with 47, and she stands 12 back of her own record, with 35 this season. That is tied for seventh in JMU history. MOST REGULAR-SEASON WINS EVER JMU s 16-1 overall record is the best mark this late in the season in JMU s 50-season history. It s also the first time JMU has won 16 games in a regular season, surpassing the 14 from the 2010 season. The Dukes began the year with an 8-0 record, marking the second-best win streak to start a season. JMU opened the 1988 season at 9-0. After tying the best 10-game start ever with a win over UC Davis, the Dukes have reeled off another eight-game win streak to complete their first regular season with only one setback. Prior to this year, JMU had begun 15-2 just once when it finished with a program-best 17-3 record in In that season, JMU hosted and won the CAA Championship, and was the NCAA s No. 5 seed. WINNINGEST SENIOR CLASS JMU s 2018 seniors have won more games than any other class in school history, holding a record. The seniors passed the 53 wins by the 2013 class. JMU has produced five classes that have won 50 games over their respective careers. The 2007 and 2006 seniors both won 51 games and the 2017 seniors claimed 50 victories. The 2018 seniors attempt to become the third class to win three CAA titles, joining the 2004 and 2006 seniors. This class is likely to become the third to also make the NCAA Championship every season, as the Dukes made the tournament in five straight years from 1997 to CAA SINGLE-SEASON GOALS RECORD Last season, JMU set a program and conference record for most goals in a season (271). In the regular-season finale at Towson, the Dukes surpassed the previous mark, scoring its record 272nd goal in overtime to win the outright title. Kristen Gaudian s overtime goal off a pass from Katie Kerrigan gave JMU the school and CAA record in just the 17th game. Last year s record was set in 21 games. TWO 50-GOAL SCORERS FIRST TIME Kristen Gaudian and Elena Romesburg both passed the 50-goal mark this season, marking the first time in school history JMU has produced a pair of 50-goal scorers in the same year. Gaudian leads the CAA with 57 goals while Romesburg is third with 53 tallies. The two rank fifth and tied for seventh, respectively, on JMU s single-season top-20 list in goals. ELENA & MOLLY WIN FINAL CAA HONORS JMU finished the season with 14 weekly CAA awards, as Elena Romesburg was named Player of the Week and Molly Dougherty was tabbed Rookie of the Week. It was the third honor for each player. Romesburg tallied two goals, one assist and a career-high seven draw controls at Towson. Dougherty made eight saves, including one on the final shot of regulation in the closing seconds to force overtime. She held the Tigers to a 7-for-18 mark (.389) on free-position opportunities. GAUDIAN WINS IT IN OT AT TOWSON Kristen Gaudian fired the game winner in overtime to lift JMU to a victory at No. 6 Towson and secure the outright CAA regularseason championship on April 28. JMU led late in the second half before a non-releasable penalty sparked Towson to a 3-0 run over the final 3:52 to tie the game at On the final play of regulation Caroline Sdanowich deflected a free-position shot, which Molly Dougherty saved to force overtime. JMU out-shot Towson 3-0 in the extra period, and after Sdanowich took a charge, Katie Kerrigan found Gaudian in front at the other end for the game-winning tally. Maddie McDaniel tied game-high honors with four goals, three of which came in the first. Gaudian finished with three goals, Hanna Haven led the team with six points off two goals and a career-high four assists and Kerrigan had a fivepoint day with two goals and three helpers.
