4 Score Atlanta Get In The Game! Thrashers receiving more coverage now than ever; Falcons considered Hard Knocks Can You Believe......He Said That? The Thrashers may have already packed up the moving trucks by the time you read this column, but something funny actually happened recently: Everyone was talking about the Thrashers in Atlanta. The television news stations, the cable sports stations, the newspaper and the radio stations. The Atlanta Thrashers were finally getting some publicity. What a shame that the team, which has made the playoffs exactly ONCE in its existence and has won exactly ZERO playoff games in its existence, is receiving more coverage discussing the team s potential departure than it did during the season. Hmmm. The Thrashers weren t exactly playoff contenders, but the organization did make a run one year ago and even added a big piece over the last offseason, inspiring confidence and offering hope. No. Nothing happened. And all of the local media (except for John Kincade of 680 The Fan s Buck & Kincade) turned off the Thrashers. That is until the chance of losing them went from nasty rumor to scary reality. Suddenly, 790 The Zone s Mike Bell, a long-time hockey fan, was humorously trying to pool money to buy them. He also was trying to get his co-host David Pollack to watch a playoff hockey game. WSB s Zach Klein went to the attempt at a Save-The-Thrashers rally to cover the event and tweeted that around 250 people were there. The coverage of the Thrashers departure was far more than any coverage of the team itself, and perhaps that is why the Thrashers are about to leave a top 10 market for Winnipeg. Sad, but people just gave up on the Thrashers, and the coverage did too. HOCKEY TALK Speaking of hockey, I just have a minor suggestion, a quick note if you will for 680 The Fan s morning show The Rude Awakening. Instead of taking 40 seconds to read an about how you aren t talking enough about the hockey playoffs and then taking around another minute to defend your not talking about the NHL playoffs, how about you just take that minute and one half and TALK about the hockey playoffs? I am not a huge hockey guy myself; I used to love to watch the playoffs when I was in college as the six-overtime games would be an excuse to not study, but I can at least stand a few minutes of hockey talk. Clearly, there are people that live and breathe hockey. If the fans cared enough to asking for a minute or two of hockey talk, instead of reading the s simply to mock them, how about just throwing them the proverbial bone? Maybe you could sub two minutes of puck talk in there instead of giving the latest recap to American Idol and Dancing with the Stars? You are/were the official flagship of the town s hockey team for Pete s sake. REFUSING HBO In an interview last week Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff said that the team may have been open to the idea of appearing on HBO s miniseries Hard Knocks, which follows a team throughout training camp. The Falcons last Monday ended up declining the official invite, but it was interesting to hear that the Dirty Birds were considering it. The program has followed teams such as the Bengals, the Cowboys, the Ravens and, last year, the Jets and has been quite entertaining for NFL fans thirsting for access behind the scenes. True, some of the coaching meetings and interactions seemed forced, and players have come out and said that some scenes were scripted, but nonetheless the show still lets the fans go inside training camp. The Falcons organization has been great at allowing fans to come to practices up at Flowery Branch as well as allowing both major sports radio stations inside training camp with plenty of access to interviews, but Hard Knocks would have opened up the Falcons to the entire country, not just to Atlanta residents. Teams such as the Steelers, Cowboys, Redskins and Packers have fans nationwide; this may have been a chance for the Falcons brand to grow. Regardless, it was still very cool to be approached by HBO and it shows that people are respecting the Falcons enough to want to get inside and see how the team works. Respect is something that is hard to come by in the NFL. Perhaps Falcons fans should be glad to be getting some, especially after so many wrote them off last year entering the playoffs and right after the playoff loss to the Packers. Hard Knocks would have been cool to see the Matt Ryan evolution, the Julio Jones/Roddy White dynamic, the Dimitroff/Belichick comparison, the Brian VanGorder reactions, the Tony Gonzalez one more year watch. It would have been cool to see if Mike Smith cheesed it up like Brian Billick or if he product-placed like Rex Ryan. Oh well, it was still cool to be considered. The people getting shafted are the fans. No matter how much they want to keep the team, they don t have a say in it. That was Atlanta Thrashers goaltender Chris Mason. He admitted that the players are rattled too, wondering where the team s future lies, but he later took the owners and management to task for bungling the situation. Pretty refreshing to hear a player siding with the fans over the folks that sign his paychecks. At least you have that, Thrashers fans NOAH S BARK Finally, Joakim Noah was the latest NBA star to fall victim to 2011 s constant camera attention. During Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, Noah was caught on camera shouting a gay slur at a courtside fan, which earned him a $50,000 fine. Kobe Bryant muttered the same slur towards an NBA official this regular season and was docked $100,000. While I do not condone calling anyone what Noah said, I can ease up a bit on Noah, considering his mistake was in the heat of the game and the fan was apparently far overserved and apparently annoying fellow fans around him. Noah used a word that shouldn t be used, but at some point the security guards need to recognize when a fan is over-served and keep an eye on that supporter, showing him the door if need be. While Noah s choice in insults was egregious to say the least, responding to a fan isn t the huge deal that some of the dopes from Around the Horn and national talk radio are making it out to be. He plays with passion; sometimes that passion carries over to the sidelines. I have no problem with Noah yelling at a fan, the same way I had zero problem with Roger McDowell yakking with a San Francisco enthusiast. I just wish they would have kept the gay slurs out of it, same as keeping race or nationality out of it. Come back with a witty remark and odds are these drunken fans will be confused and sit down befuddled Proctor can be reached at fproctor@scoreatl.com.

MAY 27 - June 2, 2011 Score Atlanta 5 Despite lockout, Falcons players holding their own workouts in preparation for season Although the immediate future of the National Football League remains uncertain, there is a surprising sense of stability within the Atlanta Falcons organization. With a cloud hanging over the 2011 NFL season, the Atlanta Falcons have been hard at work, making headlines at the NFL Draft by trading five picks for Julio Jones. And players are engaged in voluntary offseason workouts as they try to prepare themselves the best they can. Maybe the lockout wasn t what the doctor ordered for the fans, but at least Falcons followers can rest easy in knowing that their team is treating this offseason like any other. THE LOCKOUT The NFL offseason newswire has been its typically unpredictable self of late, not due to the usual talk of free agency signings or impending holdouts, but due to whether there will be an NFL season altogether in Involved in a bitter legal battle, the NFL- PA and NFL Owners negotiations have continued to run awry in recent weeks. Having been locked out by the owners who want to decrease overall salaries over the next several seasons, players have been forced to scramble amongst themselves to organize any kind of offseason activities, as they are not allowed to work with coaches or use team facilities. On May 17, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals voted to keep the lockout in place, perhaps indicating a long legal battle between players and owners. The ruling overturned a previous decision at a district court, and a final decision will be made when a full appeal is heard on June 3 in St. Louis. Linebacker Coy Wire is the Falcons union representative, and he is looking forward to any substantial ruling at this point. Hopefully they can just turn their attention to getting a collectively bargained agreement, he told the Atlanta Journal Constitution after the lockout was reinstated. I think may- be it s better that a decision was finally made about the stay and the lockout. Now, we can get down to the important matter at hand. Locked out or not, it will be the owners and NFLPA who must eventually come to a decision regardless of whether the current lockout is deemed legal. But quarterback Matt Ryan is confident that no games will be missed thanks to the dispute. You just have to let the process take its course, he said. I ve got good faith in both sides. I think that we ll be able to come to an agreement and play football this year. Other Falcons are bracing for a long period away from the field. I never expected it to get this far, said corner Dunta Robinson. Hopefully it will be over soon. But you never know. simulating normalcy Despite the current lockout, Falcons players are doing their best to simulate a normal offseason. Players are conducting strength-and-conditioning sessions four days per week, and have also held minicamps and organized team activities thus far. Meanwhile, the biggest news of Atlanta s offseason has been their move up the draft to nab Julio Jones. And he recently joined up with an already strong Atlanta offense in voluntary 7-on-7 drills. The former University of Alabama wideout only saw light action, as the session represented his first practice since having surgery for a stress fracture in his left foot in March. In fact, Jones spent most of the practice getting the skinny on Atlanta s offense from 2011 Pro Bowler Ryan and former Bama teammate John Parker Wilson. They just told me to take it very slow, Jones said. That what I m going to do. I m not coming out here to run full speed today. I m going to jog a couple routes and catch a couple of balls. Jones also took the opportunity to get to know his new teammates. I wanted to come out here and shake these guys hands and put a face with a name, he said. These guys have been great to me and we want to continue that. Meanwhile, Ryan s tutorship of Jones is only a small part of a busy offseason for the signal caller. Earlier in the month, he and linebacker Mike Peterson organized the first of many voluntary minicamps at a turf field 10 miles from Flowery Branch. NFL coaches are not allowed to work with players during the lockout. We ve all been doing it long enough to understand what s beneficial and how to get it done, Ryan said. You kind of put on your coaching hat and work on some things you want to work on. We ve got some stuff scripted. Nine of 22 starters from the NFC Divisional Playoff loss to Green Bay were on hand, including cornerback Brent Grimes and fullback Ovie Mughelli. Also present at both sets of workouts was Robinson, who is hoping to spearhead a continually improving secondary this season. R o b i n s o n has spent time in Houston, Boca Raton and Athens so far in the offseason, and he was happy to get back on the field. I feel better than I thought I would, Robinson told the AJC. I ve been doing a lot of sprints and straight ahead things. Not a lot of breaking on the ball. So it was just good to come out and do some football things. The Athens native is also looking for continued growth from the defense. We know each another, the good things and the not so good things, he said. We just have to put it all together and say hey we are a veteran football team. Let s go out here and get the job done. Many Falcons fans are nervous about an absence of professional football this fall. However, the Falcons insist that their supporters needn t worry about them, as they are clearly confident that they will be ready to play whenever that time comes. Our urgency is the same, Ryan said. Our sense of timing is that we re going to be playing at the beginning of September. As players we need to prepare ourselves to get ready to go. Photo courtesy of Jimmy Cribb/Atlanta Falcons. 6 6 Score Atlanta Get In The Game! Score List BY BRIAN JONES NOT SO BRAVE: After winning a weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies and then sweeping the Houston Astros, the Braves had a rough west coast trip as they were swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks and only won one of three games against the Los Angeles Angels. They will be back at home this weekend to face the Cincinnati Reds. Let s get it back on track, Braves! WELCOME JULIO: Falcons firstround pick Julio Jones took part in his first practice with the team this past Tuesday. Jones, who suffered a foot injury, was cleared to practice a week earlier, and spent most of his first day listening to play calls. This is great news, and I hope he is able to catch on quickly so the offense can be more efficient. Now, we need this pesky lockout to end. HAMMER TIME: Jessie The Hammer Tuggle is one of the best Falcons players in its 40-plus year history. And for his efforts, he will be inducted into the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame. Tuggle was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and is also a member of the Falcons Ring of Honor. Now the question is, will he ever make his way to Canton for the Pro Football Hall of Fame? SCORING LOW: Georgia Tech and Kennesaw State basketball are not making the grade as both teams scored below 925 on the Academic Progress Rate which was released last Tuesday. Tech scored a 915 while KSU scored an 874. This is a big blow as the Owls will lose two scholarships and one day per week of practice, while Tech will lose one scholarship. Not a good start for new head coaches Lewis Preston and Brian Gregory. THE FINAL WEEKEND: Parkview, Marist, Columbus, Buford and Hebron Christian will be the final sties for state championship games as the baseball finals get started. Marist will look to win its 12th title while Columbus is looking to win its fifth title since It was a great season and all five championship series should be stellar. TRIVIA QUESTION Average attendance this past season for the Thrashers was 13,469 fans per game. What was the average attendance for the Winnipeg Jets in their last season prior to moving? He s quietly and quickly become the staff s ace. Hines Ward Star power sells. The former UGA wideout/ quarterback/running back accomplished two things this week. First, he won the Dancing with the Stars competition. Second, by upping his celebrity profile, he may have cemented his place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The gritty Pittsburgh Steeler won himself some serious name-recognition Sam Katz Katz, the mayor of Winnipeg, said recently, It s just a matter of time referring to exactly when the Thrashers will migrate north of the border. He s a guy who has gone out on a limb, put his reputation on the line, and shown some passion for the Thrashers. Too bad no Atlanta leaders did this for the Thrash. 26 Baskets made by Derrick Rose in the 4th quarters 3 of Games 2, 3, and 4 my two cents It s been our pleasure to help cover high school playoff baseball for the Atlanta Journal Constitution this month. For those that don t follow the sport, playoff teams play one three-game series per week after starting out in a field of 32. This week, on Monday and Tuesday, the semifinals were played. Now, only 10 teams remain after a season in which hundreds participated. One of the biggest surprises was little-known Pike County qualifying for the finals. Head coach Don Hanson said he believed it was the first time in the school s history they have made the state finals in any sport. Stories like this are what make high school sports so much fun to follow. And, while Pike County is in Middle Georgia, most of the finalists are from metro Atlanta, including Parkview, Hillgrove, Marist, Whitewater, Buford, Providence Christian and Hebron Christian. We celebrate the baseball finals and wish all the teams involved good luck. And remember to check the AJC (both online and print) on for our reports on the finals. Black can be reached at sblack@scoreatl.com. Thumbs down to Lousy Owners Atlanta Spirit Group What s in a name? Not much apparently. The Atlanta Spirit Group seems to be holding out for anyone, anywhere (including tiny Canadian outpost Winnipeg) to literally take their hockey team to another city. It s hard to understand the Atlanta part or the Spirit part of the ownership group s name. Tech Hoops Academics Former Coach Paul Hewett used to preach the value and balance of recruiting studentathletes. He also had several one-and-done players. With the release of the latest Academic Progress Report, the administration has penalized itself one scholarship for underperforming. The Jackets need to get back to winning on the court and in the classroom. UGA O-line depth This seems to be cyclical problem in Athens. Every couple years, Mark Richt seems to struggle to have enough experienced, eligible, healthy and law-abiding linemen ready for September. This spring the two potential starting tackles disappeared. Trinton Sturdivant busted another ACL, and A.J. Harmon left the program. SANITY at last Quite clearly, this is a match that I could have lost. - World No. 1 tennis player Rafael Nadal about his hard-fought five-set French Open victory over former UGA star John Isner.

All good things must come to an end. For Walton boys soccer that means coach Bucky Boozer, its leader for 27 years, has retired. The Raiders have enjoyed enviable success under its charismatic coach during his tenure, including the icing on the cake: the 2011 Class 5A state championship. A selfdescribed hippy from Decatur, coaching in conservative East Cobb, Boozer became one of the most successful coaches in Georgia high school soccer history. During his lengthy coaching career at Walton, Boozer bonded with hundreds of players, many of whom still keep in touch. During the playoffs this season, several former players came out to show support for their former coach. An chain, which included hundreds of former players, formed and many expressed their affection for Boozer. Jason Holder (Class of 96) wrote: I would also like to thank coach Boozer as I strongly believe he played a major role in making me the adult I am today. He taught me perseverance, he built up my confidence and most of all he challenged me to succeed. These are all characteristics that I thrive on still today. Boozer has surely enjoyed the adulation of his players over the years. After all, the legend believes they, not the coaches, are what it is all about. The game is for the players, as he has said to his teams many times over the years. This is where I feel comfortable on the field coaching the boys. But it is about them, not me. WINDING ROAD Believe it or not, this soccer sage did not always play what the English refer to as football. At Druid Hills High School, a young Boozer played football and baseball before trying soccer his senior year. From there, he was hooked. Boozer then attended Oxford College of Emory before transferring to Appalachian State University. He had the chance to transfer to Emory University, but chose to be a Mountaineer instead. My Dad asked me how I could choose App State over Emory, recalled Boozer. I said, Because App State has a better soccer team. Boozer would eventually settle back in Atlanta, where he would take a position coaching the Paideia School soccer program. There, he won two state titles. Walton then hired the young star coach and brought him to what was then the young suburb of East Cobb. Dennis Reardon (Class of 90) shared his thoughts on playing for the coach in the early days of his tenure. He was definitely involved on the sideline, but he was easy to talk to, said Reardon, who now has a veterinary practice in Alpharetta. He BY Stephen black worked us hard, but we definitely had fun playing under him. Not only did Boozer develop his players on the field, he was also instrumental in their off-thefield progress. Playing for him allowed me to develop a certain level of confidence, said Reardon. NOW WHAT After the successful run at a top high school program, Boozer will take a year off before deciding what to do next. He has, however, decided he will increase his time spent at the North Atlanta Soccer Association, a major youth league in the metro area. Despite being retired from Walton, one thing will likely remain a constant in Boozer s life: coaching soccer. Black can be reached at sblack@scoreatl.com.

8 Score Atlanta Get In The Game! Spring football practices come to an end ith spring sports completed at all the lo- high schools, attention has Wcal turned to what some locals call the second favorite season in the south- spring football practice. Although spring practice at the high school level is more subdued in high school, the 10 practice days are no less important for the aspiring boys of fall. High school spring practice serves several purposes: for players, spring practice is an opportunity to gain a toehold on starting positions vacated by graduating players, for coaches, spring serves as an opportunity to lament the loss of key starters while evaulating offensive and defensive needs for the upcoming season, and for fans spring practice serves as the springboard for all teams to turn the corner to undefeated seasons and region championships. At Woodstock, where a reputation has been earned the last few years with rough and rugged defensive line play, this year should be no different with seniors David Brown and Jonny Clark anchoring the line, while juniors Jonah Schoeb and Trey Alexander will take over for departing seniors. They were behind these guys that graduated, and I hope they looked up to them, head coach Brent Budde said to The Cherokee Times. I hope they paid attention to what those guys were doing. Our motto is that we re trying to coach this year s team today, and next year s team. Everyone practices together, even freshmen are right there with the varsity. I hope they ve just been groomed to be able to take over when these guys did graduate. Etowah head coach Bill Stewart is happy the season is not starting next week as the injury bug hit the Eagles hard this spring. We had some nicks and bruises, Stewart told The Cherokee Tribune. Injuries prevented a lot of guys from practicing. None of the injuries are career-threatening or anything like that. They re pretty minor, and everyone should be healthy by the fall, but it was hard to evaluate things with so many guys injured during the spring. Creekside, meanwhile, is focusing on fundamentals. We re going to be young over here so I can t say we ve done anything outstanding, head coach Al Morrell told The Cherokee Tribune. We have a bigger defense and we should be bigger up front, but how we play will be up to the kids. We re excited (about the season) and it s been a good spring. Thomason can be reached at Hawks clinch berth in baseball finals illgrove clinched a trip to the 5A state Hchampionship after they swept Newnan in the state semifinals. Senior outfielder Tucker Ehming keyed a comeback in the first game with a three-run homer. Eight runs were scored between the third and fifth innings and the Hawks took the opener The second game was a breeze for Hillgrove, especially for senior righthander Ben Lumsden. He pitched a magnificent game, throwing a complete game shutout, while allowing just one hit. Senior third baseman Ryan Raper hit his second home run of the series and the Hawks completed the sweep 8-0. Raper went 4-for-7 with four RBIs in the series. Ehming was 3-for-6 with three RBIs in the two games. The Hawks will face Parkview in the state championship series that gets underway on Saturday. CUP STANDINGS With baseball coming to an end this weekend, final standings for the Regions Directors Cup should be announced very soon. However, for some classifications, they already know their place in the standings and few Cobb schools fared well. In 5A, Walton will finish second overall behind Brookwood for the Directors Cup. The boys finished sev- enth while the girls came in second. Walton won the state title in boys soccer and lacrosse along with volleyball and girls tennis. Harrison and Lassiter were the only other Cobb schools to place in the top 10 as they came in fourth and fifth place, respectively. In 4A, Pope came in second place and Kell came in ninth place overall. The Pope boys came in first while the girls finished third. Pope won three state titles this year including wrestling, volleyball and boys tennis. Kell did win any state titles this year, but went deep in the playoffs in football and also placed high in boys and girls track. Speaking of Kell, they had five athletes sign scholarships last Friday. Parker Madden (baseball), Emily Dixon (basketball), Samantha Quarles (softball), Brett Gillespie (football) and Chris Goershel (baseball) will go to school for free while playing the sport that they love. Dixon signed with Northern Oklahoma, Quarles will play for West Georgia, Gillespie signed with Northern Greenville, Madden will join the Snead State baseball team and Goershel will play for Piedmont College next year. Deighton can be reached at jdeighton@scoreatl.com. Marist baseball makes state finals n order for the Marist baseball team to Ireach the state finals they had to defeat a very strong Loganville team that. In the first game of the semifinal series, Loganville hit five home runs to overpower Marist 8-2. This was a shock because Marist pitcher Blake Stevens gave up zero homers in the previous 52 innings. Loganville starting pitcher Kenny Anderson got the win as he allowed six hits and struck out five. The second game was a little more dramatic. Loganville was up 3-2 going into the seventh inning, but Marist was able to tie the game thanks to a sacrifice fly by Chesney Young which drove in Brett Dolan. In the eighth inning, Marist was able to load the bases and won when Loganville pitcher Clint Frazier walked the next batter. The War Eagles won the game 4-3 and extended the series. In the deciding game, it was more like a boxing match than a baseball game as both teams slugged it out to see who would play in the finals on Saturday. But in the end, Marist was able to pull away for the 13-6 win. The game was tied at six, but Marist scored the final seven runs. Marist ended the day with 17 hits including three from Duke signee Andy Perez. CHAMPIONSHIP TIME The War Eagles are now gearing up for Whitewater in the state finals. The Wildcats swept Effingham County in the semifinals to make the championship series. It will be another tough task for Marist because the Wildcats are coming into the series with a lot of momentum after finishing the season on a 21-3 roll since starting the season 6-4. If Marist does win the state title, it would pretty much guarantee the school a Directors Cup sweep. They have 1075 points overall, nine more than Pope, which lost to Whitewater in the baseball quarterfinals. Currently, they trail Pope for the lead in the boys standings. A baseball state title would tie Pope. Another team from DeKalb that should win the Directors Cup is St. Pius X, which has a commanding lead over Woodward Academy in Class 3A. Jones can be reached at bjones@scoreatl.com. Multiple teams make baseball finals winnett County seemed to enjoy the annu- senior all-star games in basketball Gal and football enough to get one going for soccer. Last week, the inaugural senior all-star soccer game took place at Dacula High School between a selection of seniors from Region 7-5A and 8-5A. It was a very good night for Region 7-5A as both the boys and girls claimed victories over their eastern Gwinnett co-residents. The boys earned a 4-1 win while the girls pitched a 2-0 shutout. In the boys contest, a pair of North Gwinnett stars accounted for all of the scoring in the win. Luis Alonso notched a hat trick while Bulldog teammate Robert Hinojosa scored as well for Region 7-5A. Berkmar s Renee Acosta scored the single tally for 8-5A. All of the scoring occurred in the first half. Earlier in the evening it looked like a defensive showcase in the girls match. After scoreless first half, Region 7-5A got a goal from Peachtree Ridge s Baille Burmaster with less than 13 minutes left. Less than two minutes later, Mill Creek s Torie Scalera capped the scoring and earned the final margin with a goal. DIAMOND NOTES On the diamond, several Gwinnett programs are right in the race for a GHSA baseball title. In the state s highest classification, Parkview traveled to Colquitt County last Monday and Tuesday in one Class 5A semifinal. The right to face Hillgrove for the title was on the line. After dropping Game 1, the Panthers rallied to take Game 2, forcing play on Tuesday. Parkview used some first inning power to defeat the Packers 8-2. Matt Olson pounded a threerun home run in the six-run outburst. Meanwhile, Region 6-AA champ Buford hosted Appling County last Monday. The Wolves swept the visitors in two games to face Pike County for the title. The championship games for Parkview as well as Buford will get underway Saturday. The championship series are best-of-three affairs and if necessary, the rubber matches would be played Monday. Buford is seeking its first title since 1977 while Parkview is back in the championship series for the first time since 2002, the last year the program won a state title. Parkview also claimed the 2001 and 1996 titles. Proctor can be reached at fproctor@scoreatl.com.

MAY 27 - June 2, 2011 Score Atlanta 9 Fulton teams endure mass exodus in baseball t was a rough two weeks for Fulton County Ithroughout the latter stages of the state baseball playoffs. Alpharetta, Woodward Academy, Blessed Trinity and Lovett all reached at least the quarterfinals in their respective classifications only to tumble out of the postseason prior to the championship round. In Class 5A, host Alpharetta lost a decisive Game 3 to Colquitt County in last Wednesday s quarterfinal series. The Raiders, playing as visitors due to losing a coin flip, stormed back from a 6-1 deficit to tie it up at 6-6 in the fifth inning before eventually succumbing 9-6. Woodward had been enjoying a dominant run through the Class 3A playoffs, but it came to an abrupt halt on Monday against Spalding. In the first three rounds the War Eagles won six consecutive games by a combined score of Their bats continued to deliver with a spot in the semis at stake, but they could not hold off Spalding in a pair of shootouts. The visiting Jaguars recovered from a 10-6 deficit in Game 1 to win and they eliminated Woodward in a nightcap slugfest. Class 2A saw Pike County single-handedly dismiss two of the remaining Fulton teams in Region 6-AA members Blessed Trinity and Lovett. The Titans fell 11-7 last week in a quarterfinal Game 3 before the Lions bowed out 6-1 in a decisive third contest during semifinal action on Wednesday. WESTMINSTER KINGED Westminster won the GADA Directors Cup for the 11th time in 12 years, edging Lovett in the overall Class 2A competition. The Wildcats won six state championships, including a finishing flurry with four in the spring. They took hope top honors on both the boys and the girls sides in the cup standings, while the Lovett boys finished second and the girls placed fifth. In Class 3A, Woodward finished second to St. Pius X in the overall standings. The two rivals placed one-two in both the boys and girls competitions, with the War Eagle boys winning it and the girls coming in second. Chattahoochee s boys recorded a second-place showing in Class 5A and the Cougars finished third overall behind Marist and Pope. Dimon can be reached at rdimon@scoreatl.com. Georgia Dome chooses surface for 2011 he Georgia Dome has once again selected TFieldTurf for its field for this upcoming season. FieldTurf is the world s safest and highest performing artificial turf system. It was developed and engineered for athletes by athletes. Before FieldTurf came along, artificial turf was something to be avoided due to many non-contact injuries and careers ended prematurely. When FieldTurf was invented, it was proven to be safer for athletes. Field- Turf is made from washed silica sand and rounded cryogenic rubber. Each square foot of turf contains about seven pounds of sand and three pounds of cryogenic rubber. The Georgia Dome will be installing a fresh layer before the 2011 football season begins. Together the Georgia Dome, the Atlanta Falcons and FieldTurf have combined to make the decision of putting FieldTurf back in The Georgia Dome. FieldTurf has been used in The Georgia Dome since the 2003 football season. The new installation will begin in the beginning of July. FieldTurf will be installing its Classic product to the field. The Georgia Dome is currently home to the Atlanta Falcons, Georgia State football, the Southeastern Conference championship football game, the Chick-fil- A Bowl, the Atlanta Football Classic and many additional sports and entertainment events. TOP TURF The 2010 NFL Players Playing Surfaces Opinion Survey recently released that Field- Turf was rated the top artificial surface for the NFL for the 10th straight year. We are pleased to have FieldTurf installed as our playing surface at the Georgia Dome, said Falcons President Rich McKay. Our players have always liked playing on the surface. FieldTurf is a leader in the industry, and we are happy that the Georgia Dome was able to reach an agreement with them to install a new playing surface. Over the past eight years, The Georgia Dome has hosted over 200 professional, college and high school games on the FieldTurf surface. There is no doubt that The Georgia Dome is one of the top multi-purpose stadiums in the world, and we are very pleased to continue our association with the facility, said FieldTurf President Eric Daliere. Out of the 32 NFL teams, 21 of them have chosen FieldTurf for their fields and practice fields. Also, more than 100 top Division I universities play their home games on FieldTurf fields. 11 MAY 27 - June 2, 2011 Score Atlanta 11 SCORE MORE Hawks making offseason preparations he NBA postseason is reaching its Tclimax. But in Atlanta, the Hawks are one of a plethora of teams already beginning their offseason preparations. I thought we made some strides, head coach Larry Drew said. Now it s time to turn that corner. We have to do things this summer that make us a better ball club. After being eliminated in six games by the Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, the attention turned from the court to general manager Rick Sund, who will head up the Hawks efforts to improve the team and take the next step in the season. Sund, whose biggest moves include retaining Marvin Williams and Josh Smith, as well as dealing for Kirk Hinrich, is surely already at work after the Hawks announced they would exercise his contract option for the upcoming season. Among this summer s notable free agents who would be feasible signings for Atlanta are: Boston forward Glen Big Baby Davis, Cleveland guard Anthony Parker, Dallas scoring point guard J.J. Barea, and the Denver Nuggets J.R. Smith (who would be a nice replacement for Jamal Crawford should he not be resigned). rest and relaxation While the Atlanta front office is hard at work, it s a different story for the players, who will enjoy some much needed rest before beginning preparations for next season. One Hawk with an uncertain summer ahead is Crawford. An unrestricted free agent, the scoring guard made over $10 million in the final year of his deal, and Atlanta must decide whether to retain the sixth man for next season. I have to really just sit back and see how things play out, he said. Step away from the game and spend time with my family and see how things work out. Center Al Horford will be back next season, and he has a busy summer planned as well. Just keep working on my shooting, and putting the ball down on the floor a little more, he said. Those are points of emphasis I want to work on. I know I still can get a lot better and that s what I plan on doing. Bagriansky can be reached at jbagriansky@scoreatl.com. Jones taking part in team workouts ighly-touted rookie Julio Jones took his foot during Tuesday s action. Hthe field for the first time this offseason on Tuesday after recovering from a stress fracture in his left foot. Jones went through a conservative session in which he focused on play-calls and offensive terminology with quarterbacks Matt Ryan and John Parker Wilson while also running some routes. The former Alabama receiver took February s NFL Combine by storm with an incredible performance in almost every drill, but he left with an injury that required surgery in March. Jones was cleared to play last week after a visit to Dr. Robert Anderson, a Charlotte-based foot specialist. It s very hard being an athlete and trying to dial it down like that, but I m not in a race, Jones told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. These guys know my foot was hurt. They need me for the season. I m just going to try to work my way back. Players cannot have official workouts with coaches amidst the current NFL lockout, but the Falcons are getting after it amongst themselves and preparing for what will hopefully be a 2011 season. Seven-on-seven drills gave been a staple of team activities, and a cautious Jones did not appear to be hampered by NO HARD KNOCKS After reportedly showing signs of interest, the Falcons will not be featured this offseason on HBO s Hard Knocks. Head coach Mike Smith said that management at least talked about the possibility, but ultimately decided to avoid any potential distractions. On Monday, Atlanta became the latest team of many to turn down the reality show, which gives viewers an inside look at a training camp. The New York Jets and controversial head coach Rex Ryan made Hard Knocks an instant phenomenon in Meanwhile, former Falcons linebacker Jesse Tuggle will be a part of Atlanta s 2011 Hall of Fame Class. Tuggle and his fellow inductees will be honored by the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony on June 25 at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. Already a member of the team s Ring of Honor, Tuggle made more than 1,600 tackles for the Falcons and helped lead them to the Super Bowl at the end of the 1998 season. Beaten and battered out West Untruthful owners to blame for move he Atlanta Braves took a four-game win- streak into a quick five-game road TThrashers are still in Atlanta, hanks, guys, It s been real. The Tning but trip to Arizona and Los Angeles/Anaheim and were looking to gain more ground on Philadelphia in the NL East race. A pair of one-run losses to Arizona spoiled the start of the trip and dropping two of three to the Angels didn t help the cause, either. But the Braves swept a two-game series in Pittsburgh Tuesday and Wednesday. SORE HUDDY Last season s Comeback Player of the Year, Tim Hudson, was battered around in the series opener in Anaheim as Hudson allowed eight runs in 3.2 innings of work before being lifted. It was later revealed that Hudson was suffering from soreness in his back that actually forced him to return to Atlanta to be checked on by team officials. Hudson missed his last start this past Wednesday, as Mike Minor was scheduled to take Hudson s spot in the rotation. Hudson is expected to return to the bump this Monday. Minor is scheduled for the Tuesday start. MORE DL NEWS Hudson s injury wasn t the only one to be sustained by the team during the road trip. Right fielder and 2010 All- Star Jason Heyward has been in and out of the lineup with soreness in his right shoulder. Heyward had missed six starts after leaving a game earlier this month against Washington. After Heyward was examined by the Angels training staff, the Braves officially placed him on the 15-day DL and recalled Wilkin Ramirez from Class AAA Gwinnett. Reliever Peter Moylan was also moved from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL to clear up a spot on the 40-man roster. Also center fielder Nate McLouth was forced to leave in the first inning of Sunday s finale with a strained oblique. McLouth suffered the injury while leading off, forcing the Braves to juggle the lineup. Joe Mather found his way into the lineup, where he had been tearing up opponents pitching of late. The super-utility man was signed this past offseason but was sent to Gwinnett after spring training is making the most of his current stint with Atlanta. Mather was 4-for-6 with a home run and the goahead RBI in the Braves win over the Angels last Saturday, then drove home the Braves lone run Sunday. Proctor can be reached at fproctor@scoreatl.com. next week they probably won t be. The Atlanta Spirit Group should be ashamed of themselves because of how they have gone about this sale and how they have treated the fans since taking over the franchise. They won t be ashamed of themselves though, because frankly they don t seem to care about anybody but themselves. They only care about making money even at the expense of losing a team to another city. The ASG has proved to be an untruthful group of men who have been lying about its situation for three years now. The owners knew they were losing money with the Thrashers, but did nothing about it. Instead of searching for a viable local owner, they focused on one group to buy the team. True North Sports & Entertainment came with the only serious offer to buy the Thrashers, but only because other offers that could keep the team in Atlanta were dismissed. What s worse is that they split the sale of the Hawks and the Thrashers when they could have sold them together to someone like, let s say, Arthur Blank. Instead, they offered just the Hawks to the San Diego Padres owner, but now that fell through. FANS RALLY A group of 400 people gathered outside of Philips Arena on Saturday to help boost any support the Thrashers had left. Thrashers forward Chris Thorburn was the only player that came out to protest the proposed move. Obviously we don t know every aspect of the deal and where they re coming from because it hasn t been publicly noted in the papers, Thorburn told Fox 5. From everything we heard and rumors we heard, it s discouraging knowing that they re not behind us and they re trying to dump us. That makes a guy mad. SO LONG It seems like everyone who has anything to do with keeping the team in Atlanta have turned their backs on the Thrashers. Commissioner Gary Bettman has not come out and said anything about keeping the team in Atlanta. The owners obviously have had their backs turned the whole time. But now, even mayor Kasim Reed told the AP that the Thrashers exit is going to hurt the city, but we will withstand it just fine. Thanks mayor. Thanks commissioner. Thanks Atlanta. It s been real. 12 12 Score Atlanta Get In The Game! Brandon Williams game-winning RBI sends Panthers to CAA Baseball Tournament The Georgia State baseball team is headed back to Wilmington, N.C. after taking two of three from George Mason last weekend. The deciding game though was a little too close for comfort as Brandon Williams 10th inning RBI single scored Shane Hammond to give Georgia State a 2-1 walk-off victory. I was just looking for a pitch to put in play and just do anything I could to get that run in, said Williams. Justin Malone struck out a career-high 11 batters. Georgia State finishes the regular season overall and in CAA play. Head coach Greg Frady takes the team to its fourth postseason appearance in his first five seasons at the helm of the Panthers squad. Any time you re trying to clinch a spot in the conference tournament, you have to earn it, said Frady. It came down to bigtime players playing in big-time games and elevating their games, and Brandon certainly played big for us. Georgia State faced James Madison on Thursday afternoon at Brooks Field (Listen on WRAS-FM 88.5), but results were not available. The other teams in the field are Old Dominion and UNC-Wilmington. RARE AIR The Panther softball team was two and out in the NCAA Softball Tournament last weekend. At the Athens Regional, Georgia State lost to host Georgia 8-0 in its opener and then dropped a 6-1 decision to Florida State. The Panthers lone run came on Lauren Jones 14th home run of the season and 32nd of her career, which is a new GSU career record. GSU ends the season at The amazing part to me is that these kids did not change their personalities because of the stage they were on, said interim coach Roger Kincaid. This is a once in a lifetime experience that we will never forget and I m so thankful to be a part of it.
