CINCINNATI BENGALS One Paul Brown Stadium Cincinnati, Ohio (513) administrative offices (513) administrative fax (513) 621-TDTD (8383) ticket office WEEKLY NEWS RELEASE DEC. 15, 2015 CINCINNATI BENGALS (10-3) AT SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (4-9) Kickoff: 4:25 p.m. Eastern. Television: CBS broadcast with Spero Dedes (play-by-play) and Solomon Wilcots (analyst). The game will be aired in the Bengals home market on WKRC-TV (Channel 12) in Cincinnati, WHIO-TV (Channel 7) in Dayton and on WKYT-TV (Channel 27) in Lexington, Ky. Radio: Coverage on the Bengals Radio Network, led by a triple cast on Cincinnati flagship stations WLW-AM (700), WCKY-AM (ESPN 1530; all sports) and WEBN-FM (102.7). Broadcasters are Dan Hoard (play-by-play) and Dave Lapham (analyst). The game will also be broadcast to a national audience on affiliates of Sports USA Radio. Broadcasters are Larry Kahn (play-by-play), John Robinson (analyst) and Troy West (sideline reporter). Setting the scene: A Bengals season that had been a relatively smooth ride takes a potentially rougher turn this week, as as 10-3 Cincinnati must take on San Francisco without QB Andy Dalton, the NFL s leading passer entering last week s Pittsburgh game. Dalton suffered a right thumb fracture in the first quarter against the Steelers while making a tackle after throwing an interception. Head coach Marvin Lewis told media after the game that Dalton would not play against the 49ers and that first-year pro AJ McCarron would start in Dalton s place. Dalton has his right hand in a cast, and indications are that the injury will not require surgery, Lewis said. The head coach described Dalton s status as week-to-week beyond the 49ers game. McCarron did not play as a rookie last season, spending most of the year rehabbing a shoulder injury that followed him from his career at the University of Alabama. He earned the job as Dalton s top backup in 2015 training camp and had seen brief, mop-up action in three games before being thrown into the breach for the last three quarters last week against Pittsburgh at Paul Brown Stadium. McCarron had his moments, both good and bad, in a loss to the Steelers. He connected with WR A.J. Green for a 66-yard touchdown pass on his second series, but he later threw a pick-six interception. He had a second TD pass, but also a second INT. The NFL s passer rating formula gave him a 90.6, a mid-range score. He completed 22-of-32 for 280 yards. The Steelers win denied the Bengals a chance to clinch the AFC North Division championship and raised Pittsburgh s record to 8-5, two games behind Cincinnati in the North race, with three games to play for each team. Translation: the Bengals remain strong favorites to win the division. If they win just once, Pittsburgh must sweep Denver, Baltimore and Cleveland to force the title decision into tiebreakers. If the Bengals defeat San Francisco and Pittsburgh loses or ties at Denver, the Bengals will get the division clincher they failed to accomplish last week. And now, of course, all eyes turn to McCarron, who won a pair of national championships for Alabama but was still available for the Bengals in the fifth round of the 2014 draft. He was a huge winner without the stunning kind of measurables prized in draft scouting, and there was also the ongoing shoulder problem. But this week, McCarron will get his first fully prepped chance to show that his ability as a winner counts most. Without question, long before last week, in practices and preseason games, McCarron had established himself as someone coaches like to coach and teammates respect as their leader in the huddle. GAME NOTES 1 WEEK 15, GAME 14 SUNDAY, DEC. 20 AT LEVI S STADIUM NEXT WEEK: WEEK 16, GAME 15 MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL, DEC. 28 AT DENVER The hard part would be if he didn t have the personality he has, Lewis said of McCarron s sudden and pressing assignment. He has a great personality and he s a natural leader on the field. It s why he s here. He s got the confidence of the guys in the building. We ve been so impressed with him, and now he s got to lead us for however long. McCarron has similar size to Dalton, an inch taller at 6-3 and six pounds lighter at 210. Against Pittsburgh, he displayed his passing skill on his 66-yard TD connection to Green, with a perfectly targeted throw that traveled 43 yards through the air. Throughout the day, his on-field presence and apparent command more than passed the test for a player with less than 15 career NFL snaps and precious few practice snaps with the first offense. AJ shows every day that he has nothing timid about him, OT Andrew Whitworth said after the Steelers game. He goes in there and makes the throws and competes his butt off. He has great charisma about him in the huddle. I guess now we may have some people doubting us, but this is the NFL, and you know going in you re going to have times of adversity. If you want to be a great team, you have to fight through those, and we can still be a great team. Our success is going to be dictated to a large extent by how we play around AJ. Today (against Pittsburgh) wasn t good enough by anybody, not just McCarron. DE Carlos Dunlap was quick to second that. Cincinnati entered the Pittsburgh game ranked first in the NFL in scoring defense (16.3 points per game), but the Steelers more than doubled that. The Steelers converted eight of 14 third-down opportunities. We like to feel that our defense can carry the load when we need to, regardless of the circumstances, Dunlap said, but today we couldn t get off the field on third down and we didn t keep them out of the end zone. We can play better. We know we will play better. It s all part of the challenge. The series: The 49ers lead, 11-3, including their close victories in each of the Bengals two Super Bowls. Game summaries of Super Bowls XVI and XXIII are on pages 321 and 323 of the Bengals 2015 media guide, and starting lineups for each game are on page 294. The 49ers prevailed in Super Bowl XVI at Pontiac, Mich. (1981 season) and won win in Super Bowl XXIII at Miami ( 88 season). The 49ers hold the highest winning percentage (.786) against the Bengals of any NFL team. The 49ers lead 7-1 as the home team. San Francisco has won the last two meetings, 13-8 at Cincinnati in 2011 and at San Francisco in The last Bengals win was a decision at Paul Brown Stadium in The Bengals only win in San Francisco came in the two teams first meeting, a 21-3 decision at San Francisco in This is the Bengals first visit to Levi s Stadium. Previous games at San Francisco were at Candlestick Park (later renamed Monster Park). The complete series results can be found on page 211 of the 2015 Bengals media guide. Eight of the last nine San Francisco victories over the Bengals have come by seven or fewer points. Team bests from the series: Bengals MOST POINTS: 44, in a win at Cinergy Field in LARGEST VICTORY MARGIN: 18, in a 21-3 victory at San Francisco in FEWEST POINTS ALLOWED: 3, in the 21-3 win in ers MOST POINTS: 38, in a loss in 2003 at Paul Brown Stadium. LARGEST VICTORY MARGIN: 18, in a 21-3 victory at Cincinnati in FEWEST POINTS ALLOWED: 3, in the 21-3 win in 81.

(Game notes, continued) The last meetings: Summaries of the last two Bengals-49ers meetings in 2007 at San Francisco and in 11 at Cincinnati are on page 18 of this news release. Records vs. 49ers: The Bengals list no individual or team records set in a game with San Francisco. The 49ers have one entry for individual opponent records set against the Bengals. From a 1978 game at San Francisco, 49ers DB Anthony Leonard shares the mark of most interceptions (three) in a game against Cincinnati. Five players share that mark. Bengals tough on the road: The Bengals have a regularseason road record over the past five seasons ( ), third-best in the NFL in winning percentage (.632). Ahead of Cincinnati are only Denver (.692, 27-12) and New England (.684, 26-12) The Bengals have not played at San Francisco since 2007, when the 49ers took a win at Candlestick Park (later renamed Monster Park). Turning the tide: The Bengals are only all-time in games on the West Coast (games in California or Seattle), but under Marvin Lewis of late the picture has been much brighter. Cincinnati has a four-game winning streak in such games, having won in 2011 at Seattle, 2012 at San Diego, 2013 at San Diego and this season at Oakland. The last Bengals loss on the West Coast was by at San Diego in Lewis began his Bengals career at 1-5 on the West Coast but now is 5-5. Red-zone reports: The Bengals loss to Pittsburgh included a losing day in the red zone. The Cincinnati offense scored only one TD in three tries, with a field goal and a turnover (interception). The defense allowed Pittsburgh two TDs and a field goal on three chances. Entering the Pittsburgh game, for six straight weeks, the Bengals had not ranked below third in season offensive TD percentage and had not ranked below fourth in season defensive percentage. But entering the San Francisco game, Cincinnati ranks sixth on offense and fifth on defense. T-5th (plus-six) T-14th (even) Marvin Lewis has the most wins of any Bengals coach, and by a wide margin. His 110 total is good for a margin of 46 over Sam Wyche (64). Lewis record is in the regular season and including postseason. Lewis in 2015 extends his tenure to 13 seasons, also a Bengals record, and in April of 15, he signed a contract extension through 16. He has led the team to the postseason in five of the last six years, including four straight. The Bengals are one of only four NFL teams to be in the playoffs every year since 2011, and they are one of only five to qualify as many as five times in the last six years. In total, Lewis has coached six Bengals playoff teams, another franchise record. Paul Brown is second in the category, with three. Lewis has coached three division champions, one more than Paul Brown and Sam Wyche. The Bengals logged their third straight season of double-digit wins in 2014, finishing Cincinnati closed a half-game behind Pittsburgh in the AFC North Division and went to the playoffs as the first Wild Card, falling at AFC South champion Indianapolis. In 2013, Lewis led an 11-5 season, winning the AFC North by three games over both Baltimore and Pittsburgh. In a 2009 title season in which the Bengals swept all six division games and won the North title, Lewis was the consensus choice as NFL Coach of the Year. Lewis also led Cincinnati to an AFC North title in Lewis ranks second in the NFL in longest current tenure with one team, trailing only Bill Belichick, who is in his 16th straight season with New England. In the category of most seasons as an active NFL head coach with one or more teams, Lewis in 2014 ranks sixth. Lewis was named the ninth head coach in Bengals history on Jan. 14, In 02, he directed the NFL s fifth-ranked defense with Washington, serving as assistant head coach in addition to his role as defensive coordinator. Prior to his THE HEAD COACHES Bengals-49ers connections: Bengals defensive backs coach Vance Joseph was an assistant with the 49ers from Bengals H-back Ryan Hewitt played at Stanford... His six seasons with the Ravens ( ) included a Super Bowl victory following the 00 season. In the 00 season, Lewis Baltimore defense set the NFL record for fewest points allowed in a 16-game campaign (165), and the 00 Ravens are always included in discussions of the best singleseason NFL defenses of all time. Lewis entered the NFL as linebackers coach with Pittsburgh from , guiding the careers of Pro Bowl selections Kevin Greene, Chad Brown, Levon Kirkland and Greg Lloyd. Born Sept. 23, 1958, in McDonald, Pa., near Pittsburgh, Lewis played linebacker at Idaho State and earned All-Big Sky Conference honors in each of his three seasons ( 78-80). He began his coaching career as an assistant at Idaho State University in San Francisco s Jim Tomsula is in his first full season as an NFL head coach. He spent the previous eight seasons as the team s defensive line coach. But he entered this season with a 1-0 head coaching record, as he was 49ers interim head coach for the 2010 season finale, a victory over Arizona, after Mike Singletary was released after 15 games.. Over Tomsula s eight-seasons as defensive line coach ( ), the 49ers ranked fourth in the league in rushing yards allowed per game (98.4) and second in rushing average (3.72). Also from , San Francisco ranked third in the NFL in points per game allowed (19.4) and fourth in yards per game allowed (320.9). In 2011, the 49ers set an NFL record by not allowing a rushing touchdown in their first 14 games of the season. The team surrendered just three rushing touchdowns all year, the fewest allowed in the NFL since the league went to a 16-game schedule in Tomsula coached nine seasons in NFL Europe, including 2006 as head 2

(The head coaches, continued) Lewis vs. 49ers: 49ers lead, 2-1. coach of the Rhein Fire. He is a native of Homestead, Pa., and he was a defensive lineman in college at Tennessee State in 1985 and at Catawba (Salisbury, N.C.) in Playoff and bye picture: With three games for each team to play, the Bengals lead Pittsburgh by two games in the AFC North Division race. Pittsburgh cannot afford to lose any more ground, and must gain ground by no later than next week to remain in the race. This week, if the Bengals win at San Francisco, Pittsburgh must win at home vs Denver to remain alive. The Bengals are bidding to gain a first-round playoff bye as well as the division title. The top two records in the AFC earn byes. New England took over the No. 1 spot last week, winning at Houston to go 11-2 while the Bengals and Broncos were both losing and falling to Multiple possibilities still exist, but it s quite likely that a first-round bye will ultimately be the reward for the winner of the Dec. 28 Monday night Bengals at Denver game. Here s the AFC North picture, looking ahead through Week 16. TEAM W-L PCT. DIV. NEXT TWO WEEKS Cincinnati at San Francisco; at Denver Pittsburgh vs. Denver; at Baltimore Baltimore vs. Kansas City; vs. Baltimore Cleveland at Seattle; at Kansas City Beat Ravens, win division: It may not prove necessary, but looking ahead, the simplest Bengals ticket to the AFC North Division title is to defeat Baltimore at Paul Brown Stadium in the Jan. 3 season finale. That would provide Cincinnati with 1) the one victory needed to assure Pittsburgh can do no better than a final standings tie and 2) assurance of winning a tiebreaker. The applicable tiebreaker would be division record head-to-head is out because the teams split their two-game set and a win over the Ravens would give Cincinnati a 5-1 AFC North record. Pittsburgh s best possible finish is 4-2. McCarron makes a promise: With Andy Dalton down with a thumb injury, first-year pro AJ McCarron has been named the Bengals starting QB for the San Francisco game. McCarron was one of the biggest QB winners in college football history at Alabama, directing the offense for national championship teams in 2011 and 2012, and he proclaimed himself far from satisfied after posting a respectable 90.6 passer rating while relieving Dalton for the last three quarters in last week s loss to Pittsburgh. It was the first significant NFL action for McCarron, who did not play in 2014 due to a lingering shoulder injury from his college days. He didn t have a full practice week, of course. But he didn t lead a win, and he was 36-4 in his last three seasons at Alabama. I ll get better this week, he said after the Pittsburgh game. Being able to have all the practice reps and playing with the first unit in practice will be good for all of us. Like I told the guys, I will work my tail off all week. I will do whatever I need to do not to let them down. I m not trying to find any excuses (for the Pittsburgh game). I m going to play better, I promise you that. McCarron had a good preseason, posting a 92.7 passer rating, and it was evident even before the regular season began that he had won the respect of his teammates. McCarron s got the it factor, said CB Adam Jones, a plain talker not inclined to offer less than sincere praise. The kid s a winner. You can tell he s been working on his ball strength from last year and this year. You can never underestimate the it, factor regardless of what anybody says. It s the difference between winning some games and being champion. That s my opinion. Head coach Marvin Lewis preseason take on McCarron was this: We ve got a guy who has a lot of moxie, and has a lot of experience on the biggest stage in college. He s shown me a lot of poise, and I m very pleased about that. In the preseason games, we were working on what AJ s strengths are, so that if anything would happen to Andy, we would be prepared offensively to shift and go to that mode. AJ has the personality somewhat of a linebacker. He can lead guys and he gets excited. That s part of what made him such a successful player. Asked after the Pittsburgh game to talk about why he feels he can lead this team, McCarron replied: If you don t believe that, you re doomed. I ve always believed in myself when I step inside those white lines. You need to carry that confidence as a quarterback, because it s a nasty and dirty game. If you lose confidence, it can go bad for you real quick. I ve always believed when I step inside those white BENGALS NOTES 3 Lewis vs. Tomsula: No previous meetings. Tomsula vs. Bengals: No previous meetings. lines that I m the best one out there. That s the confidence you have to take into every game. McCarron to make it 28: Barring unforeseen circumstances that would cause him to miss this week s game, AJ McCarron will become the 28th player to start a regular-season or playoff game at quarterback for the Bengals. He s scheduled to replace Andy Dalton, who has started every regular-season and postseason game since the beginning of 2011 but is out for San Francisco due to a right thumb fracture suffered last week vs. Pittsburgh. The list of 27 previous starters includes unforgettable names such as Ken Anderson and Boomer Esiason. It also includes Sam Wyche, who later became Bengals head coach. And it includes names only hardcore fans would remember, such as 1987 strike replacements Adrian Breen and Dave Walter. Dalton was a winner in his debut start, as the Bengals won at Cleveland in But over the long run, starting anew at the controls of the Bengals offense hasn t been easy. The 27 starters to date have combined for an 8-19 won-lost mark in their debuts. Besides Dalton, Bengals QBs who have won their starting debuts are John Stofa (1968), Greg Cook ( 69), John Reaves ( 75), Esiason ( 84), Dave Walter ( 87), Akili Smith ( 99) and Jon Kitna (2001). The most points scored by the Bengals in a quarterback s starting debut is 27. Cook, Virgil Carter, Jack Thompson and Dalton all made their debuts in games in which the Bengals scored 27, but only Cook and Dalton were winners. The Bengals have had only five different starting QBs in head coach Marvin Lewis 13 seasons, and only two of major significance Carson Palmer and Dalton. Jon Kitna started in 2003 only, as Palmer stayed in a learning role for his rookie year, while Ryan Fitzpatrick and now McCarron earned their starts as injury replacements. Here s a membership list of the Bengals starters club, including this week s anticipated start for McCarron, in the order of the seasons in which they made their first starts. Details of the game are in parentheses: 1968 Dewey Warren (L, at San Diego); John Stofa (W, vs. Denver); Sam Wyche (L, vs. Houston) 1969 Greg Cook (W, vs. Miami) 1970 Virgil Carter (L, at Cleveland) 1971 Ken Anderson (L, vs. Miami) 1974 Wayne Clark (L, 3-27 at Pittsburgh) 1975 John Reaves (W, vs. Houston) 1979 Jack Thompson (L, [OT] vs. Houston) 1983 Turk Schonert (L, at Denver) 1984 Boomer Esiason (W, 13-3 vs. Houston) 1987 Adrian Breen (L, 9-10 vs. San Diego); Dave Walter (W, at Seattle) 1991 Erik Wilhelm (L, 3-35 at Houston); Don Hollas (L, at L.A. Raiders) 1992 David Klingler (L 9-21 vs. Pittsburgh) 1993 Jay Schroeder (L, at Houston) 1994 Jeff Blake (L, vs. Dallas) 1998 Neil O Donnell (L, at Tennessee); Paul Justin (L, vs. Baltimore) 1999 Akili Smith (W, at Cleveland) 2000 Scott Mitchell (L, at New England) 2001 Jon Kitna (W, vs. New England) 2002 Gus Frerotte (L, 6-34 vs. San Diego) 2004 Carson Palmer (L, at N.Y. Jets) 2008 Ryan Fitzpatrick (L, vs. Cleveland) 2011 Andy Dalton (W, at Cleveland) 2015 AJ McCarron (expected to start at San Francisco) Defensive classic looms in Denver: Despite giving up 33 points last week to Pittsburgh, the Bengals fell only to second place in the NFL in scoring defense, after ranking first entering the game. Cincinnati s average pergame yield rose from 16.3 to 17.6 The new No. 1 team is Denver, the Bengals scheduled foe following the San Francisco game. Denver lost to Oakland last week but gave up only 15 points. The Broncos have allowed four fewer points on

(Defensive classic looms in Denver, continued) the season (225) than the Bengals (229). The Bengals had been ranked No. 1 for two straight weeks before the Pittsburgh game. They have had three weeks on the season as the No. 1 team, also holding the top spot through Week 10. San Francisco s offense ranks last in the NFL in scoring (14.5). The 49ers have topped the 17-point mark only once in their last seven games. Scoring averages are not solely the products of the offense or defense. Cincinnati s offense and special teams have done a middling job of limiting opponent scores, with three TDs allowed by the offense (two fumble returns and one INT return) and none by the special teams. But the credit and primary responsibility for limiting points of course rests with the defense. My job is to limit points, period, says defensive coordinator Paul Guenther. That s what I get paid to do. It ain t holding them to 200 yards on offense and three plays be touchdowns. Regardless where we get the ball and that is a point I make to the players if we turn it over (on offense) and the ball s on the 10-yard line let s go play defense, hold them to three. If they get an interception return down to the 20, they re in field goal range, hold them to three. I m paid to keep them off the scoreboard. The Bengals have never led the NFL in scoring defense for a full season. Nor, for that matter, have they accomplished their current perch of No. 2. Their highest rank has been fifth, by the 1972 team that allowed 16.4 points per game and by the 2013 club that allowed The 2013 team led the AFC and stands as the only Bengals club to win a conference scoring defense title. Points are primary: The Bengals are the only NFL team to rank as high as undisputed fourth in both scoring and scoring defense. Cincinnati is fourth on offense and second on defense. Unbeaten Carolina comes closest, ranking first on offense and tied for fourth on defense. The top five teams in scoring have an aggregate record (.815). They are Carolina (13-0), Arizona (11-2), New England (11-2), Cincinnati (10-3) and Pittsburgh (8-5). The top five teams in scoring defense have a mark (.754). They are Denver (10-3), Cincinnati (10-3), Seattle (8-5), Carolina (13-0) and Kansas City (8-5). Carolina and Kansas City are tied for fourth. On pace for record scoring differential: The Bengals have outscored their opponents , an average of 9.6 points per game. The average game score has been 27.2-to The 9.6 margin exceeds the best the franchise has done for a full season, the record in that category being 8.9 points per game, by a 1976 team that outscored foes over a 14- game schedule. The Bengals are on pace to score 436 points, which would rank third in franchise history, behind only the 448 scored by the 1988 Super Bowl team and the 441 by the 1985 club. The team s 27.2 per-game average would also be the highest in team history (including seasons of less than 16 games). The Bengals would need to average 31.7 points over the final three games to break the club season record at 449. Cincinnati s 33-point yield to Pittsburgh last week left the team on pace to allow only 282 points for the season. That would still be Cincinnati s fewest allowed in a 16-game season. The current low yield for a 16-game season has been 284, in Cincinnati s average-per-game yield of 17.6 would rank sixth in franchise history, behind five teams from the era of 14-game seasons. Eifert now tied for TDs lead: Third-year Bengals TE Tyler Eifert is tied for the NFL lead in touchdowns (12), despite playing only nine snaps, with no scores, in the past two games. Eifert missed his first game of the season on Dec. 6 vs. Cleveland, inactive due to a stinger suffered Nov. 29 vs. St. Louis, and he played only nine snaps last week vs. Pittsburgh before being sidelined by a concussion. Eifert could return to action in San Francisco, but his status was still uncertain at release time for this notes package. Eifert scored his 12 TDs over the first 10 games, and he had held first place alone in the league for the two weeks preceding this week. In last week s play, Jacksonville WR Allen Robinson scored one TD vs. Indianapolis to reach 12 and N.Y. Giants WR Odell Beckham had two scores to reach 12. Three players have 11 TDs. The Bengals have never had a player lead the NFL in touchdowns for a full season. Only one Bengal, WR Carl Pickens with 17 in 1995, has been the sole leader in the AFC. Two Bengals FB Pete Johnson with 14 in 1983 and FB Ickey Woods with 15 in 88 have tied for the AFC touchdowns lead. With three games left on the schedule, Eifert has already far surpassed the the Bengals TE mark for touchdowns in a season. That mark entering this 4 season had been nine, shared by Rodney Holman (1989) and Bob Trumpy ( 69). Eifert had three TDs on Nov. 5 vs. Cleveland, tying one of the Bengals oldest records, touchdowns by a TE in a game. Prior to the Cleveland game, the only TE with three in a game was Trumpy, who had three at Houston on Nov. 9, Eifert has 48 receptions and 564 receiving yards on the season, ranked third on the team in both categories. Arguably, Tyler s the best tight end I ve ever been around, says offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. He s tough as nails. He blocks better than people think, and of course he can catch the ball with anybody. Has great hands, great moves and speed for his size (6-5, 250). The sky truly is the limit for this guy. T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who played 11 years in the NFL and caught 70 or more passes in six seasons, including a Bengals-record 112 in 2007, also had unusually high praise for Eifert after working with the Bengals as an intern assistant coach this past spring. Every time I see that guy run a route, I can t believe it, Houshmandzadeh said. I can t believe that man. He s too big to be moving like that. That s crazy. Eifert had a good rookie season, working with veteran TE Jermaine Gresham in a two-te base offense. He caught 39 passes for 445 yards and two TDs. But he played only eight snaps last season. On the third of his three catches for 37 yards in the season opener at Baltimore, he suffered elbow injury that would put him out for the remainder of the season. QB Andy Dalton says Eifert is always a target against smaller defenders who aren t that much faster than No. 85. He s a big matchup mismatch for us, Dalton said. The more that he can do, the better we ll be. Dalton third NFL passing: Bengals QB Andy Dalton, the NFL s leading passer entering the Pittsburgh game, dropped to third in the league when the weekend s results were in. Dalton played only nine snaps against the Steelers before being leaving with a thumb injury that will sideline him for at least the San Francisco game. His 61.7 rating for his brief action dropped his season rating by 1.1 points, from to Seattle s Russell Wilson, ranked third entering last week, posted a rating at Baltimore and moved up to first for the season, at Arizona s Carson Palmer, ranked second entering last week, held second place at after posting a vs. Minnesota. Dalton has been in the NFL s top five every week since the conclusion of Week 3 play. He has had four weeks in the No. 2 spot and now four weeks in the No. 3 position. He was the NFL leader through Week 7 as well as through Week 13. Dalton s season numbers are 255-for-386 (66.1 percent) for 3250 yards (250.0 per game), with 25 TDs and seven INTs. He ranks fourth in average gain per attempt (8.42), fourth in percentage of passes for TDs (6.5), sixth in completion percentage (66.1), seventh in lowest interception percentage (1.8), and tied for eighth in total TD passes (25). Dalton sights Palmer s club record: It s not known whether Andy Dalton will return to action this regular season and have a chance to move his season passer rating. In any event, he stands a strong chance of finishing the season with a new Bengals record for passer rating. The standing Bengals mark is 101.1, set by Carson Palmer during his Bengals days, in Dalton ranks third in the NFL in season rating, 3.7 points behind leader Russell Wilson of Seattle (110.0). Dalton could win the sixth NFL passing title in Bengals history. The last Bengal to win it was Boomer Esiason in 1988, at The other four were all claimed by Ken Anderson, in and Anderson s 98.4 in 81 was his career-best. Palmer finished second in the NFL with his in 2005, behind Indianapolis Peyton Manning (104.1). Dalton has had eight games this season with a triple-digit rating, topping his previous career high of six in a season. The Bengals record for 100-plus ratings in a full season is 11, by Palmer in 05. Dalton has claimed a road wins mark: Bengals QB Andy Dalton won t play this week at San Francisco, due to a thumb injury, but he already has won 24 road games in his not-quite-five-full-year career. Cincinnati s Dec. 6 win at Cleveland was his 24th, and Elias Sports Bureau reports that s the most by any NFL QB in his first five seasons (record researched back to the 1970 merger). Prior to the Cleveland game, Dalton shared the mark of 23 with Dan Marino, Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Ryan. Dalton has 14 losses on the road, and a road winning percentage of.632. Andy and Manning, A.J. and Moss: On Dec. 6 at Cleveland, Bengals QB Andy Dalton passed the 3000-yard mark in passing for the fifth of

(Andy and Manning, A.J. and Moss, continued) his five seasons, and WR A.J. Green went to 1000 receiving yards for the fifth time in his five years. Both are in two-man clubs. The only other passer to debut with five straight 3000-yarders was Peyton Manning of Indianapolis ( ). Manning went on to play his first 13 seasons with 3000 or more, then sat out a year due to injury, and then he did it three more times, through Moss got 1000 receiving for six straight seasons ( ) before falling below the 1000 mark in Nelson still on top in torrid race: Bengals S Reggie Nelson and Carolina S Kurt Coleman are having quite the race for the NFL interceptions lead. Each has snagged an INT in five consecutive games, and through Week 14 play Nelson has the NFL lead at eight, followed by Coleman at seven. No other NFL player has more than five. Nelson has the undisputed lead for the third straight week. Nelson will set a Bengals record for consecutive games with an INT if gets a sixth straight game with a pick against the 49ers this week. He now shares the record of five with CB Ken Riley, who pulled off his streak in Games 3-7 of Nelson s INT last week vs. Pittsburgh came in the fourth quarter, when he perfectly timed a deep pass by Ben Roethlisberger intended for WR Markus Wheaton, making the catch and going out of bounds at the Bengals four. With three games to play, Nelson is now just two short of CB Deltha O Neal s Bengals record for INTs in a season (10 in 2005). And Nelson has now tied David Fulcher s club record for INTs by a safety (eight in 1989). The Bengals have never had an outright winner of the league INTs title for a season. The only Bengal with a piece of the league title has been O Neal, whose 10 in 2005 tied Ty Law of the Jets for the top spot. The Bengals claim one outright AFC interceptions crown, that coming with Riley s nine picks in Riley was second in the NFL, behind Monte Jackson of the L.A. Rams (10). Riley also tied for the AFC lead in 1982 (five) and 1983 (eight), and O Neal s 10 in 2005 also tied for the AFC lead. Nelson has 30 career INTs, and 23 of those have come as a Bengal. He started the season tied for ninth place in all-time Bengals INTs, but now he s alone in sixth place, just one behind current teammate Leon Hall (fifth-all-time at 24, including two picks this season). Nelson has 115 return yards this season and 333 for his Bengals career. He has one Bengals INT for a TD, a 75-yarder at Seattle in Riley is the Bengals all-time INTs leader by a prohibitive margin. He had 65 over his 15-year career ( ), nearly twice as many as CB Louis Breeden ( ), who had 33. Atkins needs a run for interior sacks crown: In his sixth NFL season, Bengals DT Geno Atkins has been chasing his third piece of the NFL sacks title for interior linemen. And one of Atkins six seasons, the 2013 campaign, was significantly cut short by injury. But the chase has become tougher after last week s play. Atkins was tied for the NFL lead entering the Pittsburgh game, but he was held without a sack for the second straight game and stayed at 8.0. St. Louis DT Aaron Donald, who had been tied with Atkins, logged three sacks vs. Detroit and moved well ahead into the top spot at And Carolina DT Kawann Short, one behind Atkins entering last week, had two sacks vs. Atlanta and moved into second place at 9.0. Though the Bengals have never had an overall sacks season leader in conference or league, Atkins led NFL interior linemen by a wide margin with his 12.5 sacks in 2012, and Atkins tied for the league s interior line lead in 2011, when he had 7.5. On Atkins, head coach Marvin Lewis adds: I think Geno in particular has been playing the run exceptionally well. I think that always gets a little underrated in Geno s case. I thought he had an excellent year last year playing the run, and this year he came back much stronger in his lower body, and you see that in his play. If they try to single-block him in the running game, we know the ball is coming back to us. Also for the season, Atkins ranks second on the Bengals in QB hits (16) and second in total tackles-for-loss (12). Bernard makes most of chances: HB Giovani Bernard, the Bengals second-ranked player in yards from scrimmage (1060), had 67 yards last week, rushing six-for-40 (6.7) and catching three passes for 27 yards (9.0). Bernard leads the team in rushing yards (647) and has 413 as a receiver, ranked fourth. Bernard ranks only 20th in the NFL in rushing yards, but he s among the 5 NFL s best rushers in making use of his opportunities. His 5.13-yard per-carry average ranks third among that top 20, trailing only Thomas Rawls of Seattle (5.65) and Todd Gurley of St. Louis (5.16). His 126 total carries are the fewest among the top 25 in total yards. The average is key, says Bernard. That s what you want as a running back. Make the most of your opportunities. That s how this offense rolls. As long as we win. Whatever it takes. Bernard had a 100-yard rushing game (20-for-123) on Sept. 20 vs. San Diego. He has led the team in scrimmage yards in five games, most on the team. He has two TDs, both rushing. Bernard is on pace to finish with 1305 scrimmage yards over 16 games, which would easily top his totals of 1209 yards as a rookie in 2013 and 1029 last year. He missed three games due to injury last year. Bernard made RB receiving history: Bengals third-year HB Giovani Bernard continued his highly productive season in a big way in the Nov. 22 Arizona game, setting a Bengals record for receiving yards in a game by a running back. Bernard had a team-best 128 yards (on eight catches), eclipsing the mark of 119 set in 1998 by HB Brandon Bennett at Pittsburgh. His eight receptions tied his career high. Bernard has had key receiving gains on game-deciding drives in wins at Baltimore and at Pittsburgh. Bernard s 56 receptions in 2013 are a season record for Bengals RBs, and he is currently on pace to get 49 this season. Bernard is on pace for 515 receiving yards, which would be his career high and rank third in Bengals history. He currently holds the No. 3 spot with his 514 receiving yards as a rookie. The top two receiving yards seasons by a Bengals HB were both turned in by James Brooks, who gained 686 in 1986 and 576 in 85. Two forward, one back for Hill: After rushing for a promising 184 yards in the two previous games, with a 4.8 per-carry average, Bengals HB Jeremy Hill was limited to 16 yards on seven carries last week vs. Pittsburgh. Hill has 604 rushing yards for the season, on a team-leading 169 attempts, for an average of 3.6 per tote. So once again, as the Bengals head for San Francisco, Hill is looking to start a breakthrough toward the dazzling performance he showed as a rookie last season. He had 1124 rushing yards, second-most by a rookie in Bengals history, and he got 929 of those during the season s last nine weeks, leading the NFL during that span. Jeremy can run, says Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. We all know that. We ve all seen it. I told you guys (media) that he ll get back to doing what he needs to do. I m not concerned about it. I wasn t concerned about it. I just think there is a time and a place. Now is the time and this is the place. One area where Hill hasn t been slowed this season is scoring. He didn t score against Pittsburgh, but he has nine TDs on the season, eight rushing and one receiving. He s second on the team and ranked tied for ninth in the NFL. He has matched his total of nine (all rushing) from last season, and he also has a two-point conversion run. The Bengals 64-yard rushing output vs. Pittsburgh last week dropped them from ninth to 14th in the NFL in rushing yards per game (114.2). We can run the ball better, Jackson says. But how we run it, whether it s two backs, one back, six backs, I don t care, we ll find a way. You have to have enough attempts against really good football teams because if not, too many things can happen to your quarterback that are not fair and fun. Teammates on Giovani and Jeremy: Here s WR A.J. Green on HB Giovani Bernard: Gio isn t big (5-9, 205), but he s probably one of the toughest guys on this team, in addition to being explosive with the ball. He practices his butt off every day and plays his butt off every game. So whatever he does it doesn t really surprise me, because he is just going to give it his all, no matter how big the opponent is. And here s OT Andrew Whitworth on the surprising elusiveness and speed of the 235-pound Jeremy Hill: We ve had some very good, powerful rushers here... Rudi Johnson, Cedric Benson... but Jeremy s as big and powerful and probably has a better overall skill set. He s a big back who can run like a little back with 30 rushes: The Bengals have had 30 or more rushes in seven of their 12 games this season, and they are 7-0 in those contests, most recently their Dec. 6 win at Cleveland (33 rushes, for 144 yards). One could say that s not so much causative as just contributory, since the Bengals have done well in a lot of areas to produce a 10-3 record.

(29-0 with 30 rushes, continued) But not every season under head coach Marvin Lewis has been as good as this one, yet the 30-rushes-spells-success theory holds up strongly for Lewis entire 13-season career. The Bengals have now had 92 regulation-time games under Lewis at the 30 mark or above, and Cincinnati stands in those contests, for a winning percentage of.870. The Bengals have had two other games with 30-plus rushes under Lewis, but both of those were ties, with a full extra quarter of play. The Bengals have won 29 straight regulation-time games with 30 or more rushes. Their last such loss was a bit more than four years ago, in November 2011 at Baltimore. Cincinnati did lose a pair of 30-plus rushing games in 2013, but both of those went to overtime. It s not always the rushing yardage total that s most important, says Lewis. When you re running the ball a lot, it s a sign that even though the yardage will vary, you re controlling the ball, controlling the clock, and keeping your defense off the field. As it shows for us that is very likely going to be a winning combination. The Bengals are 37-2 (.949) under Lewis when an individual rusher records 25 or more carries, but no rusher has done that this season. The Bengals are (.846) under Lewis with an individual 100-yard rusher. They have had one individual 100-yard game this season, 123 by Giovani Bernard on Sept. 20 vs. San Diego. We love seeing a guy get 100 yards, Lewis says, but sometimes a guy can break one big gain and then get to 100 even though you may not be running as consistently well and controlling the game like you do when you get those those high-carry numbers. Dunlap logs career sacks high: After a three-week drought, Bengals DE Carlos Dunlap has been back in the sack column the last two games. He had one on Dec 6 at Cleveland, and last week, he dropped Pittsburgh s Ben Roethlisberger for a seven-yard loss on a third-down play in the third quarter, forcing a Steelers punt. Dunlap now has a career-high 10.5 sacks on the season, surpassing the previous high of 9.5 he had as a rookie in He ranks tied for sixth in the NFL, 3.5 behind LB Khalil Mack of Oakland, the league leader at Dunlap has a good shot at posting a Bengals record for sacks in a season in the NFL s official era on that statistic. Sacks have been an official NFL stat since 1982, and the highest total for a Bengal has been 13.0, by DE Eddie Edwards in Dunlap needs 2.5 sacks over the last three games to tie Edwards and 3.0 to surpass him. Sacks can come in bunches, Dunlap said, so we ll see what happens. But the only thing that really matters is that we re in the hunt as a team for all the marbles. The Bengals date the club s own sacks records to a starting point of 1976, and the Cincinnati record, though not recognized by the NFL, is 22.0 by DE Coy Bacon in 76. Edwards 13.0 is second in Bengals annals. Dunlap had his first two-sack game of the season in Game 8, Nov. 5 vs. Cleveland. Dunlap has had three games this season with 1.5 sacks. Dunlap leads the team for the season in QB hits (26), and he s also first in total tackles-for-loss (13). He leads the line for the season in total tackles (44). Last week vs. Pittsburgh, he had four tackles (including the sack) and one additional QB hit. Dunlap does it all (almost): Bengals DE Carlos Dunlap amply showed his considerable skill set on Dec. 6 at Cleveland: He forced an intentional grounding penalty with a pass pressure. He was credited with an eight-yard tackle for loss and a forced fumble when he deflected an Austin Davis lateral that Cincinnati s Rey Maualuga recovered at the Cleveland 33 in the fourth quarter. He blocked a 47-yard Travis Coons field goal attempt in the third quarter. He led the defensive line in total tackles (three). Dunlap s forced fumble was his first of the season, and he has yet to get a fumble recovery. But Bengals fans like to think he s been saving those for games to come. He has 11 career forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries, tops on the current team in both categories. Dunlap s blocked field goal was the third of his career, also tops on the current team. Perhaps the only asset Dunlap didn t show at Cleveland was his speed. He has had career fumble returns of 42 and 35 yards, the 35-yarder for a TD, and he showed moves as well as speed on those plays. Dunlap was used occasionally in high school as a 240-pound kickoff returner and had a 95-yarder for a TD as a senior. Dunlap moves to 46.0: Carlos Dunlap pushed his Bengals career sack total to 46.0 with his sack of Ben Roethlisberger last week. Earlier this season, Dunlap moved ahead of DE Justin Smith (43.5) into fourth place all-time on the Bengals. Cincinnati s all-time leader is DE Eddie Edwards, who had 83.5 sacks in 12 seasons ( ). LB Reggie Williams had 62.5 in 14 seasons and DE Ross Browner had 59.0 in nine seasons. M.L. on Carlos: Carlos Dunlap s emergence as a Bengals key player and leader has been gradual but steady. The former Florida Gator had barely turned 21 years old when Cincinnati drafted him in the second round in Asked recently to compare the Dunlap of 2015 with the Dunlap of 2010, head coach Marvin Lewis said: He does what we want to see much more often. He s matured as a man and as a player. He tries to do things the right way, and that s been key for him. Dunlap on the D-line: Last year we didn t have the rotation (of ingame personnel) that we had the few years before that, says Bengals DE Carlos Dunlap. We had some guys injured at times, and we didn t have Mike (Johnson) or Pat (Sims). And now we ve got year two from young Will (Clarke), who maybe wasn t quite ready to get his feet wet last year, and last year we had Wallace (Gilberry) playing nose in some run situations, and that s not really what we want. Having this rotation back and keeping guys healthy is going to be huge for us. And, Dunlap continued, there s Geno (Atkins). Geno s obviously got his confidence back. Coming from the first career devastating injury, it takes a little while to get that back. This year he s making the cuts and playing like the injury never happened. Burfict hits a high mark: LB Vontaze Burfict has been back in action for the last seven games, ending a 15-game absence from the lineup due to a knee injury, and he s clearly a factor for the stretch run and anticipated playoffs. He has led the team in tackles in three of the last four games, including a personal season-high of 11 stops last week vs. Pittsburgh. All of his tackles against the Steelers were solos, the most solos in a game by a Bengal this season. In the one game among the last four in which Burfict did not lead the team in tackles, he finished second. Burfict was the Bengals tackling leader by a wide margin in both 2012 and 13, and he was a Pro Bowl selection for 13. Burfict has still been limited to some extent in snaps as the coaches ease him back into the picture, but he has played more than 65 percent of the defensive snaps in each of the last two games. And with 49 total tackles, he has moved up to sixth on the team this season, despite missing six games. Burfict is averaging 7.0 tackles per game played, tied with LB Vincent Rey, whose teamleading 91 tackles in 13 games also works out to 7.0. Prior to his return to action in the Nov. 1 Pittsburgh game, Burfict had not played since Oct. 26 of last season, when he suffered a knee injury vs. Baltimore. He played in only five games last season, bothered by concussions in addition to the knee injury. He opened 2015 on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list and rejoined the team in practice on the Thursday before the Pittsburgh game. He was activated to the roster the day before the game. It s a huge impact on our defense to have him back, says head coach Marvin Lewis. He has great innate knowledge of the game, and he brings a huge measure of physicality. He impacts the team both physically and mentally. Tez is that bruiser; that attitude you need, says S George Iloka. We have a lot of personalities, but we need a guy like him. I m so happy to have him back. Burfict s rehab was long and difficult due to the nature of his injury (microfracture). Rehab periods often extend to a full year, and Burfict went 372 days between last year s Baltimore game and the Pittsburgh contest. I always stayed praying, Burfict said of his rehab period. There were some hard days when I didn t feel like doing rehab, but Marvin (Lewis) made sure he called me and made sure I got into the stadium. Teammates kept pushing me. They knew when I was out of it. I ve been pushed by teammates, coaches, Mr. (Mike) Brown... and I thank them for it. Tied for fifth in sack differential: With a plus-11 differential in sacks (33 by defense, 23 against offense), the Bengals rank tied for fifth in the NFL this week. The Bengals ranked fourth entering the Pittsburgh game, but trailed 3-2 in sacks in the Steelers contest. St. Louis leads at plus-20 (36-16). Carolina is second at plus-16 (40-24). San Francisco, this week s Cincinnati opponent, ranks last in differential at minus-23 (22-45). The 49ers 45 sacks allowed are the most in the NFL. 6
