Drake and Loyola were picked ninth and 10th, respectively, in the preseason MVC poll. Loyola is the first MVC team that Drake has faced this season that was not ranked in the top five of the league poll. Loyola is 2-2 in the MVC and 12-4 overall while Drake takes a 3-13 record and an 0-4 mark in league play to Chicago. Sophomore center Jacob Enevold Jensen has scored in double figures in five of the last seven games and led the Bulldogs with 13 points at Missouri State. In the loss to Wichita State he hauled in a career-high 15 rebounds along with 12 points for his second career double-double. The Wichita State game saw the Bulldogs hold a advantage in rebounding in the loss and a decisive 12-6 lead on the offensive glass. Drake s freshmen have played 38 percent of all minutes for the Bulldogs this season and account for 35.1 percent of their points. Against UNI, the class scored 55.5 percent of Drake s points, including the team s first 15 points of the game. The Bulldogs 13 losses have come to teams with a combined record of (.702) this season. Additionally, four of Drake s opponents (Wichita State, Green Bay and Valparaiso) are ranked in the top six of the Mid-Major Top 25 poll. Three of Drake s opponents are also ranked in the AP Top 25. 2 Head Coach Ray GIACOLETTI First Season Ray Giacoletti was introduced as the 26th head coach in Drake men s basketball history during a press conference on March 28, In his first season at the helm of the Bulldogs, he led the squad to a 10-3 start to the season that included the Fresno State Classic championship and a program-record five wins in the month of November. The team finished his first season with a record. Giacoletti served as an assistant coach at Gonzaga University for six seasons ( ), where he helped lead the perennial basketball power to six straight NCAA appearances, five West Coast Conference titles and a (.799) record during his time on campus in Spokane, Wash. In , Gonzaga marched to a 32-3 record and spent the final three weeks of the season ranked No. 1 in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls to earn a No. 1 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament. Giacoletti came to Gonzaga with 10 total years of head coaching experience and a three-year tenure as the head coach at the University of Utah where he led the Utes to a 29-6 record in his first season to tie for the third-most wins in program history and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. That squad won 18-straight games to win the Mountain West Conference regular-season title and recorded the best league record to date (13-1) in the six-year history of the league. As a result, Giacoletti was named the NABC District 13, USBWA District 8, and Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. Sophomore center Andrew Bogut became Utah s first consensus national Player of the Year, winning the John R. Wooden Award, Naismith, National Association of Basketball Coaches and Associated Press Player of the Year honors. In three seasons on the Utah bench, he amassed a record. Prior to taking the reins at Utah, he served as the head coach at Eastern Washington University where he went in four seasons, the best mark of any coach in the school s NCAA Division I history. He guided the Eagles to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004, as well as the Big Sky Conference regular-season and tournament titles. In each of Giacoletti s first three years, the Eagles placed second in the Big Sky during the regular season and advanced to the tournament championship game. In , Giacoletti led EWU to the NIT for the program s first postseason bid since 1947 when it was a NAIA program. The 2004 Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year, Giacoletti directed EWU to a overall record and an 11-3 mark in conference play that season as the Eagles won 14 of their last 18 games en route to winning the Big Sky Tournament. JEFF RUTTER Assistant Coach Spent seven seasons at Iowa State where he spent the first four seasons of his ISU tenure as an assistant coach before assuming the role of director of operations in the spring of 2010 under Fred Hoiberg. Rutter gained three seasons of experience coaching in the Missouri Valley Conference as an assistant at UNI from TODD TOWNSEND Assistant Coach Townsend, a former team captain and member of a Four team at Marquette, came to Drake in 2013 after spending the previous four seasons in a similar role at Northern Illinois. Prior to Carroll, he was the head coach at the University of Wisconsin- Superior. Slated to join the Bulldogs next season are a pair of Big Ten transfers and the 2014 Iowa high school leading scorer. Kale Abrahamson is a 6-8 forward that transferred to Drake from Northwestern where he played two seasons and averaged nearly five points per game as a sophomore. Graham Woodward started six games as a freshman at Penn State and appeared in 31 games for the Nittany Lions. Casey Schlatter was the runner-up for 2014 Iowa Mr. Basketball and led all scorers in the state with 35.7 points per game and a pair of 50-point games his senior season. A YEAR MAKES A DIFFERENCE Jacob Enevold has avoided a sophomore slump as the center ranks ninth in the MVC in rebounding (5.7 rpg) and sixth in blocks (0.9 bpg) while adding 7.9 points per game on 53.0 percent shooting. Against No. 16 Wichita State, he recorded his second career double-double with a career-high 15 rebounds and 12 points. During December, he averaged 11.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game while shooting 60 percent from the field. His increased activity has also led to him getting to the free-throw line with an average of 6.3 free throws per game. ROBBIE LEHMAN Video Coordinator Spent season as assistant video coordinator for the Iowa Hawkeyes and worked the season for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA Development League. The current Drake director of operations led the Ramblers in scoring in and and ranks ninth in career scoring with 1,603 points. REBOUNDING SHINES VS. SHOCKERS Drake recorded its second biggest rebounding margin of the season with +9-effort on the glass against No. 16 Wichita State. The advantage marked just the then second time the Shockers had been outrebounded this season while the Drake s 12 offensive rebounds tied for the second most the Shockers have surrendered this season. Additionally, the nine-rebound deficit was the biggest WSU has faced since Kentucky also earned a 9-rebound advantage in last season s NCAA Tournament. Drake has outrebounded its opponent in seven of 16 games this season and is 2-5 when doing so. TOUGH SCHEDULE Drake s opponents have proven to be worthy competition this season as the Bulldogs 15 Division I opponents to date boast a (.645) combined record. The 13 opponents that have defeated Drake are currently (.702) Drake s strength of schedule, which only factors in games against Division I opponents, ranks 21st in the nation and first in the MVC. HOT SHOOTING AT TIMES Making shots has not been an issue for the Bulldogs with the exception of the second half of the last three contests. Through the first 12 games of the season, Drake ranked in the top 50 nationally in field goal percentage, three-point percentage and free-throw percentage. The team is currently ranked 141st in field goal percentage (44.1), 112th in three-point percentage (.356) and 18th in freethrow shooting (.747). The Bulldogs have shot 50 percent or better in six of their last 14 games.
