BRUIN BYTES In the latest Pac-10 rankings (2/22/08), Lindsey Pluimer was listed in the top 10 in six of the 13 different individual categories for all games. Pluimer ranks sixth in scoring (14.5), eighth in rebounding (6.5), third in free throw percentage (.819) and 3-point FG percentage (.402), seventh in blocked shots (1.00), and eighth in defensive rebounds (4.19). The crowd of 8,103 fans which witnessed the USC game in Pauley Pavilion (Feb. 17) was the fourth-largest in UCLA women's basketball history. It was the third time UCLA and USC and have played before at least 8,000 fans in Pauley Pavilion. Five freshmen are averaging in double fi gure minutes played this season (Doreena Campbell , Nina Earl , Darxia Morris , Regina Rogers , Christina Nzekwe ). As a whole, the freshman class is logging 54.1% of the minutes played on the team, and Bruin underclassmen are playing a whopping 68.8% of the minutes. As many as three freshmen have been in the starting lineup for 12 games (6-6 record) this season UCLA NUMERICAL ROSTER Lindsey Pluimer leads the UCLA team in scoring (14.5 ppg) and in rebounding (6.5 rpg). The next three leading scorers on the team are freshmen - Nina Earl (9.0 ppg), Doreena Campbell (8.4 ppg) and Darxia Morris (8.0 ppg). In its last nine games, UCLA has recorded 91 steals (10.1) and forced 184 turnovers (20.4). Doing the most damage in those games have been Doreena Campbell (20 steals), Tierra Henderson (18) and Nina Earl (18). The Bruins remain ranked first in the Pac-10 in rebounding (42.9), steals (10.23), offensive rebounds (15.04) and defensive rebounds (27.88) and are second in scoring average (67.8) and third in turnover margin (+1.46) and fi eld goal percentage defense (.383). This year's opponent shooting percentage of.383 would rank as the third-lowest mark in Bruin history. The 66.0 opponent scoring average would rank fourth-lowest on that all-time list. UCLA's nine Pac-10 conference wins surpass the total of last year's team, which fi nished 7-11 in league play and fi nished seventh in the standings. The Bruins have had double-digit Pac-10 wins in four of the last fi ve seasons. Lindsey Pluimer was named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Conference Player of the Week (Feb. 4-10) for her play in the Bruin wins over the Washington schools. Pluimer matched her season-high with 19 points in each game and moved into 10th place on the all-time UCLA rebound list after pulling down six boards in the home win over Washington State. Stanford's 75 points on Feb. 2 were the most scored on the Bruins since Tennessee totaled 82 back on December 19. It is the only time an opponent has scored more than 70 points, in regulation time, since that game versus the Lady Vols. UCLA had limited nine straight opponents to 65 points or under in regulation before Oregon State registered 70 points on Jan. 26 UC Riverside, 60; Arizona State, 62; Arizona, 59; Stanford, 56; California, 65; Washington, 57; WSU, 56; USC, 64; Oregon 59. 2 team had such a defensive stretch came in the season, when the Bruins limited its fi rst 21 opponents to 63 points or less. UCLA has allowed an average of just points in the last four games. The Bruins are 3-1 during this stretch. ABOUT OREGON UCLA leads the series with the Ducks by a count after winning four of the last fi ve overall meetings. The Bruins won the fi rst game of the season in Pauley by a score of on Jan. 24. UCLA has split the last four games played in Eugene, losing last season by a score of First Game Recap: UCLA rallied from a 14-point secondhalf defi cit to best Oregon, 63-59, in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins forced 29 Duck turnovers, 18 in the second half, and used a 19-2 run in the later stages of the contest to pull out the win. Lindsey Pluimer led all scorers with 19 points. Doreena Campbell and Tierra Henderson combined for eight of UCLA s 12 second-half steals. Pluimer has been a particular thorn in Oregon's side in recent years, averaging 16.4 points against the Ducks in the last fi ve matchups, including a 21-point effort in last year's home win. In the 2006 Bruin win in Eugene, Pluimer hit two crucial free throws in a one-and-one situation to give UCLA a four-point lead with six seconds to play. Oregon's loss to UCLA in January was the starting point of a seven-game losing skid, and the Ducks have now lost eight of their last nine games. Oregon lost to USC on Thursday evening, 67-58, amidst 21 turnovers. Oregon leads the Pac-10 in free throw shooting (.722), and guard Taylor Lilley leads the league in 3-pt. shots made per game (2.33) and ranks 10th in the Pac-10 in scoring (12.3). BRUINS RALLY IN FINAL SECONDS AT OSU UCLA rallied in the fi nal seconds for a road win over Oregon State on Feb. 21. Junior guard Tierra Henderson hit the front end of a one-and-one free throw situation with 7.8 seconds to play to put UCLA into the lead, She missed the second, but freshman center Regina Rogers grabbed the rebound and scored a basket with fi ve seconds to play to give the Bruins a lead. Oregon State failed to get off a fi nal shot and picked up its ninth-straight loss. UCLA had trailed by seven points with just 3:31 to play in the contest before making a comeback. FRESH FACES The Bruin freshmen, ranked as the No. 4 recruiting class by HoopGurlz.com, have been as good as advertised, playing pivotal roles on the team. Three of the six freshmen have played in all 26 games, while a fourth has seen action in 25 games. Doreena Campbell has made 25 starts, Nina Earl 15, Darxia Morris 12, Regina Rogers 11 and Candice Brown 1. Five freshmen are averaging in double fi gures minutes played. Three freshmen have been in the starting lineup for 12 games (6-6 record) this season. Five freshmen have been on the court at the same time for the Bruins in numerous games this season. MAKING THE GRADE Five members of the Bruin squad made the Director's Honor Roll (3.0 or better with at least 12 graded units) in the Fall Quarter - senior Lindsey Pluimer, sophomores Allison Taka and Alexis Olivier, and freshmen Doreena Campbell and Christina Nzekwe. Pluimer and Taka earned GPAs of 3.5 or above. BRUINS VS. THE RANKS The Bruins' last victory against a nationally ranked opponent came on Jan. 4, 2008 against No. 2-ranked Stanford (69-56). It marked the fi rst time the Bruin program has ever defeated a team ranked higher than fourth in the Associated Press poll. UCLA had defeated a team ranked as high as fourth on multiple occasions, the last time came on Nov. 28, 2004 in a win over #4 Texas. PLUIMER POWERS BRUINS UCLA's lone senior, forward Lindsey Pluimer, continues to lead the Bruins both on and off the court. Pluimer, a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award nominee, threetime Academic All-District selection and All- Pac-10 honorable mention selection, has started each game of her career (118). In the home game versus Washington State (2/8/08), Pluimer moved into 10th on the all-time school rebound list. In the game at Washington (1/10/08), she became only the fi fth Bruin to total at least 1,300 points, 650 rebounds and 75 blocked shots for a career, joining Ann Meyers, Necie Thompson, Natalie Williams and Maylana Martin. She is also one of just 13 Bruins to have scored at least 1,000 points and pulled down at least 600 rebounds. Pluimer currently ranks 13th on UCLA's career scoring list with 1,497 points, 10th in rebounds with 705, sixth in blocked shots with 86 and seventh in 3-point fi eld goals made (82). Pluimer has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine District 8 Academic All-America fi rst team. Her name will now be placed on the national ballot with a chance to earn Academic All-America honors. CAMPBELL STRONG ALL-AROUND Guard Doreena Campbell has been a standout for the Bruins in all categories, averaging 8.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.36 assists, 1.64 steals and just 2.12 turnovers per game in 25 starts. She ranks No. 3 in the Pac-10 in assist/turnover ratio (1.58), No. 8 in assists (3.36) and No. 19 in rebounding (4.4). Campbell recorded seven steals in the season opener at Cal State Northridge and had a career-high of eight assists at Arizona State. Campbell missed her only game of the season at Arizona while nursing a sprained ankle. She registered a career-best 38 minutes of action at home versus Cal and matched her minutes played best at Washington while recording a new career-high with eight rebounds. She tied that rebounding mark with eight in the home game vs. USC. HER NAME IS EARL Freshman forward Nina Earl ranks second on the team in scoring with a 9.0 average. Earl has scored in double fi gures nine times on the year and set career-highs in both scoring and rebounding when she recorded her first career double-double at Arizona (23 points, 10 rebounds). She has connected on 42.5% of her shots from the fi eld which is second-best on the team. MORRIS BACK IN BUSINESS UCLA freshman guard Darxia Morris, from Pasadena, CA (Muir HS), suffered a knee injury during a weekend (Jan. 4, 6) in which she scored 20 points in a win over then-no. 2 Stanford and added 14 points, including 12 in the second half, against No. 10 Cal. She had started the previous six games and in 12 games overall this season. Morris sat out two weeks (three games-uw, WSU, USC) of action before returning to the court vs. Oregon (Jan. 24). She came off the bench to score eight points in 20 minutes of action in the home game against the Ducks. Morris is currently averaging 8.0 points (fourth on the team) and began the week averaging 1.91 steals, which rank sixth in the Pac-10 Conference. REBOUNDING ROGERS Freshman center Regina Rogers totaled 16 rebounds on Nov. 28 at Pepperdine, including 10 on the offensive end. Her 16 rebounds were the most by a Bruin player since Kristee Porter had 16 boards against Arizona on Jan. 20, Rogers was ferocious on the defensive boards at Arizona State, recording 13, along with three blocked shots. She added fi ve more boards at Arizona. Rogers is second on the team in rebounds per game (4.7 average) and blocks (14). Her rebound mark ranks 17th in the Pac-10. Her next blocked shot will move her into UCLA's freshman top-10 single-season list. CHALLENGING '07-08 SCHEDULE The Bruins have already played host to the past two NCAA championship teams this season, title holder Maryland on Nov. 25; champ Tennessee on Dec. 19. In fact, UCLA has hosted teams ranked No. 1 (Tennessee), No. 2 (Stanford) and No. 3 (Maryland) at the time of the game this season. In all, the Bruins have battled fi ve teams which won their conference or conference tournaments a year ago - Tennessee (SEC), BYU (Mountain West), UC Riverside (Big West), Stanford (Pac-10), Idaho State (Big Sky). Nine opponents advanced to play in the NCAA Tournament in Maryland, Idaho St., BYU, Tennessee, UC Riverside, Arizona St., Stanford, Cal, and Washington - and three more in the WNIT - Rice, San Diego, and Oregon. FIRST STARTS Four of the fi ve players to earn the starting nod from coach Kathy Olivier in the opener at Cal State Northridge made their fi rst collegiate starts.sophomores Erica Tukiainen and Moniquee Alexander and true freshmen Darxia Morris and Doreena Campbell each merited a starting assignment in their fi rst games. It was the fi rst time a Bruin team has started as many as two true freshmen in the fi rst game of a season since the season when Julia Pitts and Nikki Blue were in the starting lineup at Hawaii. The last time the Bruins put out a starting lineup that included more than two freshmen in the starting lineup in the season opener was in the opener against St. Mary's when four freshmen, including three true freshmen, took the floor for the jump (true freshmen - Melanie Pearson, Maylana Martin, Carly Funicello; redshirt freshman Takiyah Jackson). In game two against Rice, the Bruins started three freshmen - center Regina Rogers (1st start) and guards Campbell and Morris. Another freshman received her fi rst starting assignment in game three against Cal Poly, as Nina Earl joined two other classmates (Rogers and Campbell) in the starting lineup. In the most recent game, at Oregon State, freshman Candice Brown earned her fi rst career start. The Bruins have utilized 11 different starting lineups in the 26 games this year. BRUINS THINK PINK, RAISE MONEY FOR REVLON/UCLA BREAST CENTER UCLA did its part in raising breast cancer awareness by participating in an ESPN2-televised Think Pink game on Feb. 10 against Washington. The Bruins wore special white and pink jerseys, which were auctioned online the following week. The Think Pink jersey auction recorded gross sales of $5, The highest single bid was for $660 for the #13 UCLA jersey. All proceeds will be donated to the Revlon/UCLA Breast Center. FIRST TO 100 JERSEYS Several Bruin teams will be wearing special jerseys or patches in to commemorate UCLA being the First to 100 NCAA Championships. The women's basketball team will don the new jerseys that have a different-colored "C" in UCLA. The "C" signifi es the Roman numeral for 100. LOOKING AHEAD UCLA closes out the regular season at home against Arizona State on Feb. 28 at 7 pm and Arizona on Mar. 1 at 11 am. Senior Lindsey Pluimer will be honored on Senior Day at the Mar. 1 game. It could also mark the fi rst collegiate matchup between the Ibekwe sisters, Chinyere of UCLA and Ify of Arizona. Ify missed the December matchup in Tucson, a UCLA win, due to an eye injury. Head Coach Kathy Olivier Now in her 15th season as UCLA head coach, Kathy Olivier has energized the program. The former standout player at Cal State Fullerton and UNLV has produced two Pac-10 Players of the Year (Maylana Martin and Natalie Williams), three Pac-10 Freshman Players of the Year (Martin, Noelle Quinn and Erica Gomez), a Pac-10 team championship (1999) and a Pac-10 Tournament championship (2006). She is the only current Pac-10 coach to have as many as three freshmen named fi rst-team All-Conference performers. Over the last 10 years, her teams have fi nished in the top four of the Pac-10 standings six times, a total bettered by only one other conference institution during that period. From , she guided UCLA to a school-best three straight NCAA tournament appearances and had the Bruins back in the NCAA Tournament again in Interest in UCLA women's basketball has taken off to new levels under Olivier. The only seven regular season crowds in Bruin history of over 7,000 fans have come out to support UCLA during her tenure. In fact, the top 13 regular season crowds in school history have come with Olivier at the helm. She has steadily built the program to refl ect her own positive, upbeat and outgoing personality. Olivier has posted a overall mark, which includes six top-four Pac-10 fi nishes in the last 10 years. Her teams may favor a running game on offense, but defense is another Olivier strong point. Six of the all-time school top 10 marks for lowest opponent fi eld goal percentages belong to Olivier-coached squads. Olivier originally joined the UCLA staff in the summer of 1986 as an assistant coach. Olivier began her coaching career at UNLV as a graduate assistant in Following one season at UC Irvine ( ), she was hired at USC and was on the Trojan staff for three years ( through ) as an assistant. USC, led by sophomore Cheryl Miller, won the NCAA title in Olivier s fi rst year (1984) and reached the championship game in her third season (1986). The former Kathy Ricks, Olivier was a standout player at Cal State Fullerton and then at UNLV. As a freshman ( ) at CSUF, she averaged 15.6 points and 9.2 rebounds and raised her scoring average to 19.3 as a sophomore. As a junior ( ) at UNLV, she earned All-America honors while averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 5.7 rebounds. In her fi nal year ( ), she led the Rebels in scoring (20.2) and ranked second in rebounding (9.2). pg. 6 of 7
