2 SOUTH ALABAMA S LAST GAME Florida International 81, South Alabama 74 February 25, 2012 MIAMI Florida International s DeJuan Wright scored 35 points and Jeremy Allen added 21 to help the Panthers defeat the University of South Alabama men s basketball team Saturday night at U.S. Century Bank Arena. The loss ends a four-game winning streak for the Jaguars and gives them a final regular season record of and 8-8 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. The Panthers win for just the second time at home and finish 8-20 and Both teams will await their opponents in the Sun Belt Tournament March 3-6 in Hot Springs, Ark. The league will announce the pairings Sunday. USA trailed by as many as 14 points midway through the second half and was able to cut the margin down to three with just over two minutes left but could get no closer. We can t give up 81 points and expect to win, said Jaguar head coach Ronnie Arrow. We just couldn t stop the ball. They got into the lane, fed open guys and we didn t stop them. Sophomore Augustine Rubit (Houston, Texas) recorded his 11th double-double of the year with a team-best 25 points and 14 rebounds. He shot 12-for-15 from the floor and scored 17 points after halftime, making all eight of his shots. Florida International ended the first half on a 9-2 run including nine in a row to take a lead into halftime. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Allen gave the Panthers their biggest lead of the night, 64-50, with 10:19 left in the game. A jumper from Wright with 8:48 remaining put FIU up 12, but USA countered with six unanswered the last four from Rubit to cut the margin to at the 5:36 mark. The teams traded scores over the next two minutes but a 5-0 run by the Jags got them to within three, 72-69, with 2:18 left in the contest. On FIU s next possession, Wright converted an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Panthers up six. Rubit answered on the other end, but USA missed a layup after an FIU turnover that would have made it a two-point game. Florida International made six of its last eight free throws, including two from Wright with six seconds left. We couldn t get stops, Arrow commented. They scored when we needed to and couldn t stop them. We were scoring but they were scoring too. When you re down 11 to start with, you don t catch up. We cut it to three, but they hit some buckets and hit some free throws. The bottom line is, we can t let them score 81 points in regulation. Sixteen of Wright s points came from the free throw line in 19 attempts. Allen made 4 of 8 from 3-point land. Both played all 40 minutes. Deric Hill came off the bench to dish out nine assists with no turnovers. South Alabama shot 59.4 percent in the second half the team s best in a half this season and 49.2 percent for the contest. Freshman Mychal Ammons (Vicksburg, Miss.) had 12 points and three assists, and junior Freddie Goldstein (Milwaukee, Wis.) added 10 points. We wanted to win the thing and keep the momentum going, Arrow said. We ve won six out of eight and we need to take that and apply that to the Sun Belt Tournament and go to the NCAAs. TROY S LAST GAME Troy 83, Florida Atlantic 82 February 25, 2012 BOCA RATON, Fla. The Troy men s basketball team overcame a 19-point halftime deficit to defeat Florida Atlantic on the road on Saturday night, 83-82, in the regular season finale for both teams. The win marked the second straight for Troy as they enter next week s conference tournament. Troy (10-17, 5-11) finished the game on an 16-2 run over the last 4:46 including the last six from Will Weathers who finished with a season-high 28, including 26 in a dominate second half performance. Florida Atlantic (11-18, 8-8) led by as many as 19 points thanks to a 12-0 run to open the second half, but the Trojans never seemed out of it. Troy slowly chipped away and culminated the comeback with some clutch free throws in the final minute. This was a big win to help build momentum heading into Hot Springs, said head coach Don Maestri. After Weathers converted an old fashioned three-point play with 42 seconds left, Troy forced one of 11 FAU turnovers and came away with the final possession, trailing Weathers, who was 4-of-4 from deep in the second half, attempted a triple with 14 seconds and was fouled taking the shot. The junior calmly knocked down all three free throws to give Troy their first lead of the second half at The Owls came up empty on a game-winning attempt and the Trojans picked up their first win at FAU Arena in three years. Alan Jones was also in double-figures for Troy with 18 points as the Trojans shot 54.4 percent (31-of-57) overall and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from deep. Troy was 13-of-16 from the line, including 12-of-14 in the second half. Greg Gantt led FAU with 28 while Pablo Bertone also had 20. Alex Tucker had 10 assists for the Owls but hit just 1-of-3 shots, including a miss on the final possession. THE LAST TIME THEY MET South Alabama 68, Troy 66 January 29, 2012 MOBILE, Ala. Sophomore Augustine Rubit (Houston, Texas) hit a layup with 1.8 seconds left in the game and the University of South Alabama survived a 20-point Troy comeback to give the Jaguars a victory Sunday afternoon at the Mitchell Center..: South Alabama Men s Basketball Game Notes - Page 2 :. OPENING TIP South Alabama is 3-1 in Summit Arena and 0-2 on Convention Center Court. The Jags defeated Troy in 2009 in the quarterfinals in Summit Arena and lost to the Trojans on CCC the next year, also in the quarterfinals. USA s four-game win streak that ended in the regular-season finale at FIU tied the team s longest this year. The Jags also won four in a row in December to close out the non-conference schedule. The four straight league wins were the program s longest run since February South Alabama has six wins this year when trailing by 10 points or more at any point in the game, including two of the last four. Since the start of the campaign, the Jags have rallied from down 10 or more to win 14 times. USA fell behind by seven in the second half in its last win at FAU. Mychal Ammons has scored in double-figures in each of his last five games and is averaging 18.8 points during that span. His 12 points in the regular-season finale at FIU were his lowest during that streak, but scored a then-career-best 25 points at Arkansas State on Feb. 9 and 26 (nine in OT) at FAU on Feb. 23. With three in a row to close the regular season, Augustine Rubit leads the Sun Belt Conference in double-doubles with 11. He is averaging 17.7 points and 13.0 rebounds in his last three games, including 25 points and 14 boards last Saturday at FIU and 18 points and 12 rebounds at FAU. Rubit has owned the glass in his career against the Trojans, grabbing 13 or more three times with an average of 13.8 over four games. He tied his then-career high with 18 (16 defensive) on Jan. 27, 2011 only to best it on Jan. 29 of this season with 19. Rubit leads the SBC with 9.3 per game and ranks eighth in career rebounds (560) at South Alabama in less than two seasons. Rubit leads the nation s seventh-best team in rebounding margin (+7.5) and the Jags have outrebounded 21 of their 27 opponents this season, including seven of their last eight. USA has a plus-28.0 margin against Troy this year and grabbed a season-best 54 rebounds Jan. 14 in Troy. Freddie Goldstein, the Sun Belt s leading 3-point shooter this season (2.4 pg), set a new school record with nine treys (in 16 attempts) Jan. 14 at Troy, but had just one (in six attempts) two weeks later in Mobile. Javier Carter finished the regular season as the league s top shot blocker (2.7 bpg) and has at least one rejection in his last four games. His 68 blocks this year are third most in school history and he is second all-time at South Alabama (128). Carter blocked eight shots Feb. 18 vs. WKU, tied for third at USA. He has recorded a block in 22 of 25 games this year. Troy shot just 6-for-37 from 3-point land in the first meeting with South Alabama for a seasonlow 16.2 percent but hit from distance 11 times (11-for-31) in the rematch. The 11 treys were the Trojans second-most in SBC play. TROY AT A GLANCE No. Name Pos. Ht. Wt. Yr. Pts. Rbs. Hometown 0 R.J. It was also the Jaguars first home win in Sun Belt Conference play (1-4). USA improves to 11-9 overall and 3-6 in the SBC. Troy drops to 7-13 and 2-7. We made it interesting, but I was proud of our guys after we got the big lead, said Arrow. Troy came out with a lot of energy. We didn t guard as well as we did the first half, and they were making the shots the second half. Our zone, the first half especially, did a really good job. Arrow is now in 13 seasons at South Alabama and in 21 years as a Division I head coach. Wins just go along with the job, if you re in this long enough, Arrow noted. You re in this to win for the program, for the kids, for the school and whatever else happens individually, the bottom line is that we want to get this team to the NCAA tournament. Rubit put up monster numbers in the win, scoring 18 points with new career highs in rebounds (19) and blocks (5). He had a double-double in the first half alone with 11 points and 10 boards. He leads the conference with eight on the season. They were triple teaming him tonight, double teaming him, Arrow commented. He did a great job of taking the first step rather than holding it and holding it and giving them a chance to double team him. It was good that he made the quick move to the hole and he finished it, and he got done what we needed to get done. Rubit s final points came following a key offensive rebound by junior Wendell Wright (Long Beach, Calif.) with 31.7 seconds left. After a timeout, the Jags held the ball until the final moments and fed Rubit underneath who laid it in. In the final play, we set it up for a jumper for Freddie (Goldstein), Arrow said. If he wasn t open, we d pick for Aug to get open in there. They did a good job and got the ball and finished. We were really happy that he got the ball. South Alabama built an 18-point lead at halftime and a 20-point advantage less than a minute in to the second half thanks to a suffocating defense that held Troy scoreless for almost 10 minutes. The Jags finished the opening half on a 20-0 run as the Trojans missed their last 14 shots before halftime. The drought continued after intermission when Troy failed to convert on its first two attempts. Steven Cunningham finally broke the string with a three-point play at the 17:57 mark. After the Jaguars bucket to open the second-half scoring, the Trojans went on a 15-2 run as USA went 1-for-12 from the field with four turnovers. Another scoring spurt, this time a 13-2 rally, gave Troy a lead with 5:43 left in the contest. South Alabama answered with six consecutive points but the Trojans responded with five unanswered to take the lead for the final time. Senior Antione Lundy (Saginaw, Mich.) tied his best with 18 points in his first-ever start. He also grabbed eight rebounds. Junior Freddie Goldstein (Milwaukee, Wis.) dished out a personal-best seven assists and freshman Mychal Ammons (Vicksburg, Miss.) pulled down nine boards. Troy placed five in double-figure scoring, led by Emil Jones who had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Justin Wright and Will Weathers had 12 points each, and R.J. Scott and Alan Jones added 11 apiece. RALLY JAGS Falling behind early is no reason to panic for the Jaguars as they have rallied from down 10 or more to win six times this season, including twice in the last four games of the year On Nov. 16 against Mobile, South Alabama fell behind by as many as 14 points in the first half in the win Two games later, the Jags were down 10 at halftime and 12 early in the second half before rallying for a overtime win at LSU Since the start of the year, South Alabama has come back from 10 or more to win 14 times, including a 22-point comeback win over Denver in By contrast, the biggest lead the Jaguars have coughed up in a loss in is six (8-2), at FIU to close out the regular season The previous high was five (35-30) in an overtime defeat to North Texas. BOMBS AWAY Freddie Goldstein, the Sun Belt s leading 3-point shooter entering the Sun Belt Tournament, has set or tied the school s single-game record for 3-pointers twice this season with nine He surpassed the previous record of eight (accomplished four times) on Jan. 14 at Troy, converting 9-for-16 from long range 6-for-10 in the second half alone for a career-best 30 points He tied that record with a 9-for-12 performance at Louisiana at Monroe on Feb. 11 Goldstein set a new personal best with 33 points in that game, including the game-winning shot his only two-pointer of the day with 30.9 seconds left He has converted from beyond the arc in all but two games this year and tops the conference with 2.4 treys per contest. ROBERSON OUT FOR SEASON WITH FOOT INJURY Xavier Roberson will miss the rest of the injury with a broken foot He suffered the original injury Dec. 5, missed the next five games, but returned Dec. 31 against Middle Tennessee and played the next game vs. North Texas but left in overtime after reaggravating the injury Roberson, a Houston, Texas native, was second on the team and 24th in the Sun Belt Conference in scoring with 10.5 points per game before the injury in early December. JAGS WINNING WITH REBOUNDING South Alabama has dominated the boards this season, ranking seventh in the nation and first in the Sun Belt in rebounding margin (+7.5) The Jags have four players in the SBC s top 20, led by Augustine Rubit who is first (34th in the nation) with 9.3 boards per game Mychal Ammons (6.0 rpg) and Antione Lundy (5.9 rpg) are 12th and 13th, respectively, in the league The Jags have outrebounded their opponent 21 times in 27 games this season USA won the battle of the boards 13 games in a row from Nov. 23 through Jan. 14, and were 9-4 in those games South Alabama has outrebounded an opponent by 20 or more three times. RUBIT RECEIVES USA S SECOND PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR Augustine Rubit was tabbed the Sun Belt s Player of the Week on Dec. 13, the second player on the team to earn the award Rubit averaged 22 points and eight rebounds during the two games and recorded his third double-double of the season against Alcorn State The Houston, Texas native scored a career-high 31 points and 10 rebounds against the Braves He hit 13 of his 22 attempts (both personal bests) from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line Rubit s 31 points came in only 25 minutes of work on the floor Against Southern Miss, he scored 13 points with six rebounds on 6-of-10 shooting. ROBERSON EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD FROM SUN BELT Xavier Roberson was named the Sun Belt Conference Men s Basketball Player of the Week on Nov. 29 Roberson.: South Alabama Men s Basketball Game Notes - Page 3 :.

SWAT TEAM The Jaguars have moved into first place in the Sun Belt Conference blocks rankings thanks to a run of 49 over a six-game stretch in November and December USA rejected 11 shots in the win over UAB on Nov. 30, the most in over seven years and two shy of a school record, and added nine more in their next game vs. Alabama A&M Javier Carter, the school s active leader in blocks, had 21 over that four-game stretch, with seven vs. UAB, five at LSU (11/23), four vs. Alabama A&M (12/3) and five vs. Southern Miss (12/7) Carter s total vs. UAB was a new career high at the time and tied for fourth most in school history Carter bested that vs. Western Kentucky on Feb. 18 with eight, which is tied for third in the USA record books He is first in the Sun Belt in blocks (2.7 pg) which ranks 15th in Division I Carter moved into second place on USA s career blocks list with three vs. Middle Tennessee and his performance vs. WKU jumped him from sixth to third in USA s single-season history South Alabama as a team is 30th in the nation (4.9) USA was second in the league in blocks (4.9) last season and had three players in the SBC s top 15. 7 Ronnie Arrow Head Coach Southwest Texas State, th Season In his second go-around at the school where he began his Division I coaching career in 1987, head coach Ronnie Arrow has not skipped a beat. In his fifth season since his return to South Alabama in 2007, Arrow has already posted two 20-win campaigns and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Now entering his 13th overall season at USA, Arrow holds a record with three NCAA Tournament appearances and three Sun Belt Conference crowns. He first guided the Jaguars from , posting a (55.1%) record in the eight-year stint. An accomplished coach at both the Division I and junior college level for 30 years, Arrow has accumulated a combined mark at South Alabama, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and San Jacinto Junior College. Included in that total are three junior college national championships and four trips to the NCAA Tournament. A three-time Sun Belt Coach of the Year, Arrow ranks third all-time among Sun Belt coaches in league wins and has just three losing seasons in league play in his long career. After leading Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007, Arrow returned to South Alabama and promptly guided the Jaguars to a school-record 26 victories, the Sun Belt Conference East Division title and a berth in the NCAA postseason. For his efforts, he was selected the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year for the third time in his career. Arrow wasn t the only individual recognized in the program, though, as he helped Demetric Bennett (First Team), Daon Merritt (Second Team), Brandon Davis and Domonic Tilford (both Third Team) earn All-Sun Belt accolades after the Jags finished 16-2 in league action. In addition, he and Bennett were honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Arrow was the organization s District 6 Coach of the Year while Bennett was a First Team All-District choice. Arrow and the Jaguars followed that up with a campaign in and advanced to the SBC Tournament championship game. The team finished strong, winning eight of its last 10 and knocked off the No. 3 and No. 2 seeds before falling to top-seeded Western Kentucky. Three players earned all-sun Belt honors: Brandon Davis, DeAndré Coleman and Domonic Tilford, and the Jaguars led the conference in four categories. The season was a monumental one as Arrow eclipsed three major career milestones. He became the school s all time wins leader on Jan. 16, surpassing Cliff Ellis s record of 171 victories. Arrow s 300th win as a Division I coach came in grand style Nov. 29 at Arkansas, the first of two triumphs against SEC opponents, and his 600th win at all college levels was a home victory over Alcorn State. He passed another milestone the next season by becoming the third coach in league history to record 100 conference wins. Already South Alabama s career leader in SBC wins with 102, Arrow needs two league victories to move into second place and 10 to become the Sun Belt s all-time leader. A major bright spot for the season was the development of Augustine Rubit, who enjoyed one of the best freshman campaigns in school history. Rubit became South Alabama s second-ever Sun Belt Freshman of the Year after ranking sixth in Division I and first among freshmen in rebounding (11.0). Rubit was named to two freshman all-america teams in addition to being the first USA frosh to earn all-sun Belt honors. Prior to his return to USA, Arrow compiled a (59.6%) mark at TAMU-CC including three straight 20-win seasons in his last three years with the program. In addition to guiding the Islanders to the NCAA Tournament in 2007, he led them to a school-record 26-7 finish and the Southland Conference title their first year in the league, earning coach-of-the-year honors for his work. Long before the Islanders threatened No. 2 seed Wisconsin in the national tournament, they made a name for themselves defeating the likes of South Florida out of the Big East Conference and Texas Christian of the Mountain West for the second straight season in Despite a one-point loss to Big 12 Conference member Missouri on its home court, Arrow brought the Islanders from the ground up to become a contender with schools from the power conferences. In 2004, Arrow put TAMU-CC on the national map as it defeated Florida State in Tallahassee and followed with an upset win over Old Dominion, handing the Monarchs one of their five losses that season. In addition to those victories, Arrow s Islanders defeated Texas Tech, Texas A&M and 2004 NCAA Tournament qualifier Murray State. Arrow took over the Islanders in 1998 when the school moved to Division I, finishing with six seasons with a.500 or better record while guiding the school to a regular-season and tournament championship in their only season in the Southland Conference. Before moving to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Arrow knew all about rising from the ashes. At the end of the season at USA, he was named the Sun Belt Coach of the Year for the second time after engineering the most dramatic turnaround in league history. That year, his Jaguars became the first SBC squad ever to leap from last to first place in a single season. Picked to finish fifth in the conference, South Alabama went on to capture the league crown with an 11-3 mark. The Jags, who finished the season with a 22-9 record, swept through the conference tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament before falling to Utah in a first-round tilt. In 1987, Arrow took over at South Alabama for Mike Hanks as the school s fifth head coach. During his time in Mobile, he led the Jags to two NCAA Tournaments, including a thrilling win over Alabama in the first round of the 1989 NCAA Tournament still the school s only victory in the event in just his second season at the helm. South Alabama lost to eventual national champion Michigan in the second round and finished the season with a 23-9 record. Arrow was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year after winning conference regular-season and tournament titles. Over the years, Arrow has developed a reputation in the collegiate basketball circles for up-tempo, high-scoring teams. His squads led the SBC in scoring four of his first seven seasons at USA. His squad set a school and league record with a 91 points-per-game average, and five of his seven teams tallied at least 80 points per outing. Prior to South Alabama, Arrow served as head coach at San Jacinto Junior College from He tallied an impressive (87.5%) record and guided the Ravens to 10 TJCAC titles, as well as NJCAA championships in 1983, 84 and 86. He was tabbed the NJCAA Region XIV Coach of the Year in 1983, 84, 86, 87, and the National Coach of the Year in 1983 and His squad led the nation in scoring, averaging 101 points per game. In junior college, Arrow coached several players who went on to enjoy careers in the National Basketball Association: Walter Berry, Alton Lister, Ladell Eackles and Larry Spriggs. Additionally, he led the 1989 United States Junior World Cup Team to the gold medal in Uruguay with future NBA stars Grant Hill, Calbert Cheaney and Allan Houston. Arrow was a two-year all-lone Star Conference honoree and a threeyear letterman at Southwest Texas State. After graduating from STS (now Texas State) with a bachelor s degree in health and physical education in 1969, he began his coaching career by serving as a graduate assistant at Sam Houston State. He moved on to coach Pasadena High School during the season, capturing District 23-4A Coach-of-the-Year honors. Arrow and his wife, Nelda, have one adult daughter, Ailey, and one granddaughter, Ansley, born May 20, : South Alabama Men s Basketball Game Notes - Page 7 :.
