3 Welcome to our Third Annual Spring Classic Tournament! The 2019 Spring Classic Tournament is an open entry tournament for teams looking for an alternative to playing in Central Washington or looking for an alternative travel tournament that is not a National Qualifier. The tournament is for teams of all levels. This is the first year as an AAU Super Regional. We find that several teams attend post season AAU events, and this tournament gives you another opportunity to use your AAU Membership and - more importantly - a chance to earn free entry to one of THREE AAU Post Season Events. The tournament will be held at the NW Sports Hub -- a 14 court facility in Centralia. More courts are secured within a 5 mile radius of the HUB so teams will not have to worry about a lot of driving from the central core of tournament hotels. NW Sports Hub will add four more courts in 2020 so there is room for expansion. There will be two rounds of pool play, followed by single elimination play. We will be awarding medals to the top three teams in each age group, so we will play off for third place in all age groups. Saturday will be one round of pool and the beginning of the second round of pool play. Sunday will be the completion of the second round of pool and all of the playoff matches. All teams will play pool play matches on Sunday and have tournament play Sunday afternoon. Medals will be awarded to the top three teams in each age group. Doors will open at 7:30 Each day We will have a mandatory coaches meeting and roster verification at 8:00 AM Saturday for all coaches Play will begin at 8:30 AM both days of the competition. Last Scheduled Match Saturday is 4:00 PM Last Scheduled Match Sunday is 4:30 PM Hopefully those of you that have opted to play in our event this season have an enjoyable experience and spread the word so that our event can continue to grow. Please take some time to look over this important tournament information this is all pertinent information vital to the success of this event. We will have a brief coaches meeting before play begins Saturday, but it is important for each of the coaches to become familiar with the tournament policies, as we will not have time to go over all policies at the coaches meeting. We rely on the cooperation of coaches, players, and fans in ensuring that all facility rules and regulations are followed. Please make sure that all persons involved in your team are familiar with all of the rules. We hope you enjoy yourselves this weekend. Tournament Headquarters: NW Sports Hub, Centralia, WA Tournament Director: Tony Miranda, Doors will open at 7:30AM, play will begin at 8:30 AM each day Admission will be $5.00 for the weekend; children, students, participants enter free Tournament Overview: There are 47 teams in 3 divisions. 4 General Facility Rules: Please refer to the NW Sports HUB website for information on facility rules. A link is posted to the tournament page, but here it is for your reference: Here is a clarification on Bottled Water which is on the list of restrictions: their policy restricts bottled water, meaning you are not allowed to bring racks of store-bought bottled water into the facility. You are, however, permitted and encouraged to bring your own water bottles into the facility. There are water bottle filling stations in a few locations throughout the facility. There will be areas throughout the facility where players can keep their team bags and equipment. Outside food and drink are not allowed in the facility, and there are areas outside, and across the street from the gym where teams can set-up team areas. Rules of Play: Per the AAU Volleyball Handbook USAV Domestic Competition Regulations rules will be in effect. A copy of the AAU Volleyball Handbook is posted on the tournament website and available for inspection at the tournament headquarters. All matches in pool play and playoffs will be played 2 of 3 to 25, rally scoring sets as per AAU rules. No caps in any sets. All deciding sets will go to 15 with no cap, switching sides at 8; the winning team must win by 2 points. Teams will have 3 options at the coin toss: serve, receive, choice of court. In the case of three team pools where teams play 3 sets to 25, no cap all three sets must be played. The team that wins serve set 1 will also serve set 3; and teams DO NOT switch sides at 13. Canadian Teams, please be aware of the following USAV/AAU rules: Teams are allotted 12 total subs per set Teams are assigned officiating duties throughout the tournament and must supply R1, R2, Scorekeeping crew, and lines people Liberos are permitted to serve in one rotation Re-toss on the serve for U14 play. No jewelry allowed. Game and Forfeit Times: Please note that matches may begin before the scheduled time. There is no shared hitting. The first match of the day and the first match of playoffs are the only matches that will start at the scheduled/published time. Subsequent matches will begin 10 minutes following the conclusion of the previous. Exception: for each team s first match of the day, warm-up will be (5 minutes of shared court time, 4 minutes for the serving team, 4 minutes for the receiving team. For the rest of the matches each day, warm-up is 2-4-4; Coaches and referees for the next match are asked to please start the warmup period immediately. Serving will be done during your four minutes of designated court time. Matches will run ahead of schedule if possible. If a team does not show on time, a forfeit procedure is in place to ensure that the event stays on time. The first forfeit set will be 15 minutes following the conclusion of the previous match. The forfeit time for the second set will follow 10 minutes later. Game Balls: Game Balls will be provided on each court. Our official ball is the Baden Perfection game ball. No other ball will be used for scheduled matches. Protests: Any formal protest is to be settled on the spot at the time it occurs and before play continues, per USAV/AAU rules. All R1 judgment calls are not valid for protest. Any protest will be settled ASAP by the tournament director, and one other official or coach who is not involved in the dispute. A protest cannot be filed at the end of a match. Judgment calls are not protestable. 4 Page

5 2019 Spring Classic Spring Classic AAU Super Regional Officiating: Team officiating responsibilities are listed in this manual and posted at the tournament headquarters. First round playoff matches are highlighted in the bracket. In the remaining elimination matches, in most cases the Losing team will have officiating duties for the next scheduled match on that court. Each team is responsible to provide the following: R1, R2, Scorekeeper, Assistant Scorekeeper (visual/flip chart), Libero tracker, and two lines persons. During playoffs, players cannot referee as R1 even though they may better than their coach or referee adult. Players are permitted to R1 during pool play, but a coach must serve as either the R2 or the Scorekeeper. Penalties for being late to or missing an officiating assignment: If you are late to your assignment, you will be penalized one point per minute you are late, up to a full match (50 minutes). If you miss an officiating assignment you will be penalized one match AND be assigned to officiate the next scheduled match that your team is not playing. If you are late to or miss the last match assignment for the day, the same penalty will be assessed on the next day s competition. Officiating assignments are clearly determined throughout the tournament handbook, so there should be no missed officiating assignments. Common courtesy dictates that teams not leave before officiating after their final match / loss on the final day of competition. Seeding and Tie-breaking procedures: In most divisions, in order to simplify the tournament your progressive placing throughout the tournament will be based upon your seed and your finish within your pool; not on how your performance in pool compares to other teams in other pools. This will make it simpler for coaches, fans, players, etc. to figure out exactly where they play next without having to wait for other pools to finish in order to place themselves within the next pool or playoff bracket. Tie Breaking Criteria: There will be no playoff sets to settle ties. Ties will be broken by the tournament director. Tie-breaking procedures will be as follows: Two-way tie (by match record): Results of the Head to head MATCH Three-way tie (by match record): Head to head is not used at any time to break a 3-way tie. Compare the following, in this order: 1) Set win/loss ratio: Total sets won/sets played 2) Points ratio: Total points scored divided by total points allowed 3) Coin Toss Again, there will be no playoff matches; all ties will be broken by the above criteria. Souvenir Tee- Shirts & Prizes: Spring Classic Tournament T-Shirts and other items will be sold at the Fine Designs store within the facility. Medals will be awarded to the top three teams in the GOLD division of each age group. All bracket champions will be given a coupon which they can use for a special Champion tee-shirt or for $13 towards a larger item. Prizes will be awarded as follows: 18 Gold, Silver, Bronze: $13 Coupon 16 Gold, Silver, Bronze: $13 Coupon 14 Gold & Silver: $13 Coupon 5 Page

6 AAU SUPER REGIONAL DETAILS Overview For approved AAU Grand Prix and Super Regional Events, winning teams will earn a free or discounted entry fee for the AAU National Championships, the West Coast Championships, or the Volleyball Festival. The amount of the discount depends on the number of teams competing in the event in that age division. The discount could range from 30% to 100%. Please refer to the tournament guidelines for more information. These events are not qualifiers for the National Championships, as the Nationals are open to any team. All teams must still enter the National Championships by the entry deadline, regardless of the date of the Grand Prix or Super Regional. How to win: The winner in each girls' division with 12 or more teams will receive a free entry to the AAU National Championships, the West Coast Championships, or the Volleyball Festival. If less teams participate, the entry fee will be adjusted on a percentage basis based on the number of teams that participated in that division. See Chart at right for the 2018 percentages. Spots will not be automatically held for winning teams. All teams must follow the entry requirements and policies as outlined in the event information packet. Teams earning a free or discounted entry fee must contact the AAU National Office by July 1st, If the entry fee has been previously paid, a refund will be issued in the same matter that the entry fee was paid. For example, if the team registered online with a credit card, the refund will be issued to that credit card. Please provide the order number or check number when inquiring about reimbursement. It is the winning team s responsibility to contact volleyball@aausports.org to receive their free or discounted entry fee. Refund requests will not be accepted after July 1st, Teams can choose to use their free entry fee for the AAU National Championships, the West Coast Championships, or the Volleyball Festival. Teams participating in multiple events can only earn one entry fee for the National Championships, one entry fee for the West Coast Championships, and one entry fee for the Volleyball Festival. Teams cannot earn multiple entry fees for the same event. If the first-place team has previously won a Super Regional or Grand Prix or is not attending either the National Championships, West Coast Championships, or the Volleyball Festival, the entry fee will drop down to the second place team. The entry fee will not drop to any teams below second place. The entry fee waiver applies only to the team that won the event. The club cannot apply it towards a different team within the same club. The National Championships, West Coast Championships and Volleyball Festival are open to all teams meeting the entry requirements, regardless of placement or participation in a Super Regional or Grand Prix tournament. 6 Page
