With their win over Houston Jan. 30 coupled with Kansas loss that same night, the Tigers remained the nation s only undefeated team. Memphis is 20-0 heading into Saturday s game versus UTEP. The Jayhawks fell to 20-1 with their setback at Kansas State. MAKING HISTORY WITH 20-WIN SEASONS It s not like the Tigers haven t made enough history already this season, but there is more since they posted their 20th win with the victory over Houston Jan. 30. As a result of winning their 20th game Jan. 30, the Tiger program has eight-straight 20-win seasons, with all coming under head coach John Calipari. The current string of eight-consecutive 20-win campaigns ties the streak of eight-straight from through John CALIPARI... CAL - uh - PARE - ee CALIPARI TOPS AT MEMPHIS Well, John Calipari is second on the all-time wins chart at Memphis. However, the Tiger head coach is first in number of 20-win seasons at Memphis. With the Tigers victory over Houston Jan. 30, Calipari posted his eighth 20-win campaign overall, moving past former Memphis great Larry Finch s seven 20-win seasons. Calipari is the only coach in Tiger basketball history to direct his squads to eightconsecutive 20-win campaigns. The following shows the top-five coaches with the most 20-win seasons in Memphis basketball history: Coach 20-win seasons Years John Calipari pres. Well, after two wins over Tulsa and Gonzaga last week, the Tigers defended their No. 1 ranking and sit atop both Jan. 28 polls. The last time Memphis was the nation s No. 1 team came in the season. The Tigers were voted No. 1 in the Jan. 10, 1983, poll, but then lost at Virginia Tech later that day. Memphis bounced back with a win over Cincinnati later that week, but the Tigers dropped to No. 6 in the Jan. 17 poll. 4 G a m e # 2 1 M e m p h i s v s. U T E P P a g e 4 TIGERS TOUGH ON THE ROAD UNDER CALIPARI The old formula goes that a team should win at least 66.7 percent of the time on its home floor, and then win 33.3 percent of the road games. If that is the case, then Memphis head coach John Calipari s teams are more than holding their own. Since Calipari took over in , the Tigers have a record at home (The Pyramid/FedExForum) for an incredible 88.0 winning percentage. And, the Tigers have proven to be just as tough on the road in the Calipari era. Memphis has a record in road games (not including neutral sites) for a 67.1 winning percentage. After dropping their first two road games at Tennessee and Arizona in , the Tigers bounced back and have a current road win streak of 15 straight. In , Memphis was the last NCAA Division I team in the nation to lose a road game. The Tigers dropped their lone road game Mar. 2 at UAB The following shows Memphis year-byyear road record under Calipari: Total TIED FOR NOW, GOING FOR RECORD ON SATURDAY With their victory over Houston Jan. 30, the Tigers tied the program s best-ever start at The last time the Tigers started off 20-0 was the season. That squad also began the year with a 20-0 record before losing its 21st contest at Virginia Tech on Feb. 1, The following lists the best undefeated starts in Tiger basketball history since World War II: Year Undefeated Start TOP 20-GAME STARTS SINCE With their victory over Houston Jan. 30, the Tigers improved their record to 20-0 overall, tying the best 20-game start in school history. This is the third-straight year that a John Calipari team posted a top-six 20-game start in Tiger basketball history. The squad tied the team for the best start with the 20-0 mark. The NCAA title game squad was 16-4 in its first 20 games. The previous best 20-game start under Calipari was 18-2 by the team. The following lists the top six 20-game starts since : * * Team advanced to NCAA Final Four Bold indicates teams coached by Calipari FRIENDLY FEBRUARY While the Tigers have enjoyed success in the John Calipari era in the month of January (54-10;.844 winning percentage), February hasn t been too bad either. Under Calipari, Memphis has a record (.784 winning percentage) in February. Last year, the Tigers posted a perfect 7-0 record in February, and the program s current February win streak is at 14 straight. Also included in that overall mark was a 16-game winning streak in the month of February from through JANUARY PROVED FRUITFUL FOR TIGERS In the John Calipari era, the new year has usually started with a bang for the Tigers. Since Calipari took over the Memphis hoops program in , the Tigers have an impressive record (.844 winning percentage) in the month of January. The Tigers won their last 25 January games, with their last January setback coming to Texas on Jan. 2, 2006 (69-58 loss). MORE ON THE TIGERS JANUARY With its win over Houston on Jan. 30, Memphis completed a clean sweep of the month of January. The Tigers finished January with a perfect 9-0 record, marking the second-straight year Memphis had a perfect mark in January (8-0 in ). However, the last two seasons were not the first time in the John Calipari era that the Tigers had a perfect January. Memphis posted a perfect 7-0 mark in January in the , which was Calipari s first year in the Bluff City. Since the campaign, the Tigers have had six undefeated marks in January, and the following shows that: Year January Record LAST YEAR S MEETING VS. UTEP #6/7 Memphis 78 UTEP 67 Mar. 1, 2007 El Paso, Texas In a match-up of teacher versus pupil, Memphis head coach John Calipari got a game-high 21 points from Chris Douglas-Roberts to help lift the No. 6/7 Tigers to a Conference USA victory over the Tony Barbee-led Miners. Barbee played for Calipari at UMass from and also served on Calipari s staff at Memphis from Jeremy Hunt scored 19 points, and Doneal Mack added 10 points. Antonio Anderson led the Tigers on the glass with nine boards. Stefon Jackson posted a double-double of 19 points and 12 boards to lead UTEP. Jeremy Sampson (14 points), Marvin Kilgore (12) and Maurice Thomas (11) also netted double figures for UTEP. Memphis led at the break and increased its advantage to seven points at on an Andre Allen trey at the 13:09 mark. The Miners, though, did not go away, and when Victor Ramalho hit a jumper in the lane, UTEP had pulled to within one at with 10:14 to play. After the teams traded baskets, the Tigers led 59-58, but UTEP had an opportunity to take the lead. However, Thomas jumper missed, and Memphis answered on the other end with a Hunt trey to extend the lead to From that point, the Tigers held off UTEP with timely hoops and free throws. In the first half, it looked as if the Tigers would pull away en route to the win. Memphis built a lead midway through the opening half. UTEP, however, did not fold. A 14-5 run pulled the Miners to within two at with 2:51 left before halftime. Moments later, a Sampson three-pointer tied the game at 36-all. Memphis scored the final four points of the half for the halftime advantage. The Tigers out-rebounded UTEP and fotced 21 Miner turnovers. 5 G a m e # 2 1 M e m p h i s v s. U T E P P a g e IT S THE TEACHER VS. THE PUPIL Saturday s Memphis-UTEP match-up is one that Tiger head coach John Calipari is not looking forward to especially since he will be matching wits against his former player and assistant coach Tony Barbee. Calipari coached Barbee at UMass from , and those Minuteman teams went to two NITs and two NCAA Tournaments, including a Sweet Sixteen appearance in When Calipari took over at Memphis in 2000, Barbee joined the Tigers staff and helped the program to six-straight 20-win seasons and six-consecutive postseason tournaments (3 NCAA, 3 NIT). This is the second year that Calipari and Barbee have faced off, as their first meeting was last year. Memphis won that game in El Paso. FIRST (REGULAR SEASON) TRIP BACK HOME Well, for the regular season at least. Former Tiger assistant coach Tony Barbee makes his first regularseason trip back home to the Bluff City as UTEP s head coach. Last season, Memphis met UTEP in El Paso, but Barbee s Miners played at FedExForum in the Conference USA Tournament. HEY, WE KNOW Y ALL TOO! When the Tiger players and coaches look over at the UTEP bench, Miners head coach Tony Barbee FedExForum The Home of The T iger s The season marks the fourth for the Tigers in their home arena, FedExForum, which officially opened in September, Located just a few feet off Beale Street on historic Highway 61, FedExForum rises to extend the heart of the Memphis entertainment district. Memphis plays all of its home contests in the 18,400- seat arena and also hosts its C-USA rivals during the 2008 C-USA Tournament. At 135 feet high, FedExForum provides a new backdrop for historic Beale Street. The 805,850 square-feet arena, covering 13.8 acres, features five levels as well as state-of-the-art locker rooms and facilities for sports teams, as well as an exceptional dining and entertainment experiences for its patrons. won t be the only familiar face they will see. Milt Wagner and Mike Babul, both of whom worked under John Calipari at Memphis, are now on Barbee s staff at UTEP. Wagner is an assistant coach, while Babul is the director of basketball operations. Two other former Tigers are also on the UTEP staff. Nathaniel Root, who played for Calipari, works in operations/video. Tony Madlock, who played at Memphis from , is an assistant coach. A C-USA POY MATCH-UP? Memphis Chris Douglas-Roberts and UTEP s Stefon Jackson both care more about team accomplishments than individual honors. However, both players will be in the talk for Conference USA Player of the Year (POY) award in March. Calipari visited China in late September, and then in mid-october, 15 Chinese coaches came to Memphis to observe Tiger practices for 10 days. After the 10-day visit, 14 of the Chinese coaches flew back home and one coach Cui Wanjun stayed in the Bluff City and will be a part of the Memphis staff for the season. 6 G a m e # 2 1 M e m p h i s v s. U T E P P a g e 6 TIGER SUCCESS AT FEDEXFORUM After a rough first year at their new home in , the Tigers have bounced back quite nicely and made FedExForum one of the toughest arenas for opponents to play in. Since the 2005 Conference USA Tournament, Memphis has won 55 of its last 57 home games (.965 winning percentage). Overall, the Tigers have a 65-8 record (.890 winning percentage) at FedExForum. Memphis had a perfect 19-0 home mark in , and is 11-0 at FedExForum this year. TIGERS STREAKING AT HOME Don t look now, but the Tigers have put together another homecourt winning streak. Memphis finished the campaign with a 32-game homecourt winning streak, and the Tigers added to that total with 11 wins in to extend the nation s longest homecourt win streak to 43. BYU is second with 42-straight wins at home. The following lists the nation s current top-five homecourt win streaks for : Team Streak Next Home Game Memphis 43* UTEP/Feb. 2 BYU 42 TCU/Feb. 6 Notre Dame 32 DePaul/Feb. 2 Tennessee 27 Florida/Feb. 5 Akron 21 Eastern Mich./Feb. 2 * Note: Memphis C-USA Tour. gms count in streak 43-0 IS THE RECORD!!! Memphis current 43-game homecourt win streak is the longest in the nation, and it is now the longest in Tiger basketball history. The current streak of 43 broke the previous one of 39 straight that spanned from the end of the season through the campaign. The previous long home win streak in the John #32 to #3 #12 to #5 Joey Dorsey changed his number from 32 to 3 because Chicago Bull Ben Wallace wears jersey No. 3. Dorsey said that head coach John Calipari has been encouraging him to play like Ben Wallace, so he thought he would change his number to Wallace s. Dorsey had worn jersey No. 32 the past two seasons. As a freshman in , Dorsey wore No. 15. Antonio Anderson switched jersey numbers from No. 12 to No. 5. He wore No. 5 during his prep career, but when he arrived in Memphis, Jeremy Hunt had No. 5. With the graduation of Hunt last season, Anderson was able to switch back to his No. 5. Calipari era was 24 straight that stretched from the middle of the season through the start of the year. The following are the Tigers top-five homecourt winning streaks in school history: Streak Years Spanned to present through through through through through * Calipari teams in italics GET YOUR TRACK SHOES ON! When Memphis and UTEP meet Saturday, it may seem more like a track meet than a basketball game. Both squads like to push the ball, and that can be seen in the scoring numbers. The Tigers lead Conference USA in scoring at 81.3 ppg, while the Miners are third at 78.3 ppg. DORSEY, DOZIER HAVE CAREER NIGHT VERSUS HOUSTON The Ds had it going Jan. 30 in the Tigers victory over Houston. The Ds are Joey Dorsey and Robert Dozier, and both players had career games in the win. Dorsey set his career high on the glass for a second time in a week. Entering this season, the 6-foot- 9 posted his career rebounding game of 18 boards as a freshman in the campaign. The Baltimore, Md., native set a new career mark just last week (Jan. 23) with 19 boards versus Tulsa. Well, Dorsey took only a week to surpass that mark with an incredible 22-rebound performance versus Houston. Dozier recorded his career high in the scoring column with 21 points versus the Cougars. The Lithonia, Ga., native broke his previous career best of I t s I n T h e N u m b e r s #55 to #31 #23 For the third-straight year, Chance McGrady switched his jersey number. This season, McGrady will wear No. 31. Last year, he wore No. 55, and as a freshman, he wore No. 11. Well, it s not what most people think. Yes, Derrick Rose is from Chicago and he did grow up a Michael Jordan fan. However, his jersey number is not for MJ. Rose wore No. 25 in high school in honor of former Chicago high school star Ben Wilson, but No. 25 is retired at Memphis (Hardaway wore it). HISTORY MADE, PART I The Tigers were ranked No. 1 in both Jan. 28 polls, marking the second-straight week they sit at the top. It is the first time Memphis stayed atop both polls for more than one week. The previous time the Tigers made it to No. 1 was in the campaign, and they stayed at that No. 1 position for only one week. HISTORY MADE, PART II For those in attendance at FedExForum Jan. 26, they witnessed history for the Memphis Tiger basketball program. The Tigers played their first home game as the No. 1 team in the nation in the program s history. Memphis defeated Gonzaga last Saturday at FedExForum, also marking the first home win by the Tigers as the nation s No. 1 team. The last time Memphis was No. 1 came in the season, with the Tigers earning the top spot on Jan. 10. However, Memphis lost at Virginia Tech that same day and then played at Cincinnati later that week (an win). The Tigers returned home Jan. 19, but had dropped to No. 6 in the polls when they took the court for that contest. HISTORY MADE, PART III With its win over Tulsa Jan. 23, the Memphis squad made program history when it posted its first-ever victory as the nation s No. 1 team. The Tigers defeated Tulsa The last time Memphis earned the No. 1 national ranking was Jan. 10, 1983, and later that same day, lost at Virginia Tech. #1 FOR THE NON-BCS GUYS The Tigers took over the No. 1 spot in both national polls, and in climbing to the top position, Memphis is in rare company. The Tigers are only the fourth non-bcs program to gain the No. 1 national ranking since UNLV s squad. In addition to Memphis ( ) and UNLV ( / ), the other two non-bcs schools to earn the No. 1 ranking were UMass ( / ) and Saint Joseph s ( ). Those UMass teams were coached by current Tiger mentor John Calipari. NO. 1 IN POLLS, NO. 2 IN RPI The Tigers are No. 1 in both national polls, and this week, jumped up to No. 2 in the latest Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) released Jan. 31. CALIPARI IN MORE ELITE COMPANY Memphis head coach John Calipari is considered among the best active coaches in the country. But, with him guiding the Tigers to the No. 1 national ranking in the Jan. 21 Associated Press (AP) poll, Calipari can place his name among the top coaches historically. Calipari is one of only five coaches in NCAA Division I history to guide two different schools to the No. 1 ranking (according to AP poll).
