The Pokes will be making their second appearance in Death Valley since In that game, LSU posted a win but not before the Cowboys managed to take a 10-7 lead in the second quarter before the Tigers rolled off 25 unanswered points. The 92,576 in attendance in that game is the largest crowd the Cowboys have every played in front of. That is until Saturday where the crowd is expected to top 100k. McNeese returns 9 starters on offense and 7 on defense and a total of 64 lettermen returning. The Cowboys are a member of the Southland Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly 1-AA, and are are the dean of the league, having joined in McNeese has compiled a all-time record in season openers and has defeated a member of the FBS in two of the last three seasons at Middle Tennessee in 2012 and at South Florida in McNeese nearly pulled off one of the greatest upsets in college football last season in the opener at Nebraska. The Huskers got a highlight reel TD run by Ameer Abdullah with less than a minute to play to give Nebraska a win over the Cowboys. Senior QB Daniel Sams will be under center for the Cowboys against LSU. Sams led the team in rusing with 711 yards last season and threw for another 624. The Cowboys are 5-3 under Viator in season openers vs. non-fbs members and 2-3 against FBS teams... Viator took over as head coach of the Cowboys after the fifth game of the 2006 season. Cowboys have won a record 13 Southland championships - more than three times more than the next current league foe. Played in the 1997 and 2002 FCS national championship game - falling 10-9 to Youngstown State in 1997 and to Western Kentucky in McNeese is coming off its league-record 15th playoff season. McNeese finished 6-5 in 2014 for its 10th straight winning season... head coach Matt Viator has never had a losing season in his 9 seasons. Viator, who took over the helm midway through the 2006 season, has compiled a 5-2 record in season openers. McNeese-LSU to Remember 10 Year Anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita with Helmet Decals Both LSU and McNeese players will wear helmet decals in rememberance of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The 2015 year marks the 10th anniversary of two of the most devastating storms to ever hit the gulf coast. McNeese was uprooted for most of that football season due to Hurricane Rita, having to take up residence at the Southeastern Louisiana campus while playing home games at Northwestern State and Louisiana-Lafayette. The team made its debut in Cowboy Stadium on Oct. 29 and prevailed with a win over Sam Houston State.

3 mcneese football - championship tradition McNeese has been the team of the Southland Conference for the past few decades but the winning tradition goes back farther than that. The Cowboys played in, and won, the very first Independence Bowl in 1976 after they defeated Tulsa by a score. McNeese went on to play in the 1979 and 1980 Independence Bowl games, losing to an Art Monk-led Syracuse team 31-7 in 1979 and then to Southern Mississippi a year later. The Cowboys made their first-ever FCS (1-AA) playoff appearance in 1991 and had seven playoff appearances in the 1990s. Since 2000, McNeese has played in another eight FCS playoff brackets. The Cowboys played in the 1997 and 2002 FCS National Championship games, falling to a Jim Tresselcoached Youngstown State team 10-9 in 1997 then falling to Western Kentucky in Overall, McNeese has won a league-record 13 conference championships and has appeared in a conferencebest 15 postseason playoff brackets. Since 2000, McNeese has won 117 games and has posted a winning season in 14 of the last 15 years, including 10 straight seasons. cowboys vs. the sec Saturday s game against LSU will mark the second meeting between the two schools and the second against a member of the SEC. The Cowboys played Missouri in 2010 (then a member of the Big 12) and Texas A&M in 2001, also a Big 12 member at the time. sams ready to lead team Senior quarterback Daniel Sams is 100% both physically and mentally heading into the 2015 season. Mentally, he s taken on as the leader of the Cowboy team. Physically, he s throwing the ball better than ever after undergoing offseason surgery to repair a torn ligament in his throwing hand thumb. Sams, a transfer from Kansas State in the summer of 2014 who went into the summer coming off a thumb injury, appeared in 10 games last season and led the team with 711 yards rushing to go along with 624 passing. He missed the season finale against Lamar and took just a couple snaps against Southeastern Louisiana the prior week. Against SFA, Sams reinjured that same thumb midway through the game. The Cowboys lost the final three games of the season with Sams ineffective. sams knocking on history s door Sams made school history last season when he rushed for 100 yards or more in three games to become the first quarterback in school history to achieve that. That broke the record held by Ricky Miller (1969) and Kerry Joseph (1995). His next game to rush over the century mark will tie him with Joseph with four 100- yard rushing games by a QB in a career. rb group looking for big things Of the 2,441 rushing yards gained last season, the Cowboys return all but nine of those yards that was racked up among eight ball carriers. Leading the way is QB Daniel Sams who led the team with 711 yards followed by Ryan Ross (599), Derrick Milton (387), Kelvin Bennett (354), and Dylan Long (346). A few yards here and there by a couple of wide receivers made up the rest. The backfield gained some strength during the offseason with the acquisition of 6-0, 226-pounder David Hamm who transferred in from UTEP. Hamm, a sophomore from Klein, Texas (Klein HS), appeared in 11 games last season for UTEP and ran for 96 yards on 14 carries. He was named the MVP of the team s spring game last May before tranferring to McNeese. With his arrival, that allowed the McNeese coaching staff to move speedster Bennett to the defensive side of the ball where he ll be able to help out with his quickness and speed. experienced group on the o-line McNeese returns 4 of 5 starters from last years offensive line that helped the Cowboys roll up 220 rushing yards a game. Nick Gorman, Ben Jones, Quentin Marsh, and Mason Martin started all 11 games last season and combined to allow just 3 1/2 sacks while playing over 90-percent of the season s snaps. Marsh, a preseason first team all-slc selection, earned season team honors last year after he played more than 95-percent of the snaps and did not allow one sack. position hopping A few players made position changes during the offseason, moves that have already proved to be the right one. Senior Wallace Scott, a preseason first team all-southland Conference selection at linebacker, has moved back to his original position of free safety thanks to the play of sophomore Ashari Goins and Christian Jacobs as well as the play of sophomore Ed Duplessis. Already with an all-conference backer in senior Bo Brown, Scott s change to free safety will give the Cowboys added size and speed in the backfield... redshirt freshman Tavarious Battiste has moved from defensive back to wide receiver. His play in August camp has lifted him to a No. 1 spot on the depth chart at the ZWR spot... Kelvin Bennett, one of the fastest players on the team, has moved from running back to cornerback to help give the Cowboys some added speed at that spot. mcneese-lsu connections LSU tight ends coach Steve Ensminger was Mc- Neese s offensive coordinator from defenive line coach Ed Orgeron was a graduate assistant for the Cowboys in McNeese running backs coach Slade Nagle, a McNeese graduate, was a special teams assistant for LSU in his father, John, a former McNeese assistant coach, played for the Tigers from as a cornerback... McNeese athletic director Bruce Hemphill played wide receiver for the Tigers from and was the junior varsity coach from McNeese starting defensive back, sophomore Dominique Hill is the son of former LSU tight end Chris Hill ( )... LSU sophomore wide receiver Trey Quinn is the grandson of former McNeese head coach Bobby Keasler who is the school s all-time winningest coach... LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette is the older brother of McNeese SID Matthew Bonnette... the two are sons of longtime McNeese SID Louis Bonnette. top 25 matchups under viator McNeese State has played in 17 games where both teams were ranked in the top 25polls under head coach Matt Viator. That s the longest streak in the Southland Conference with the next closest teams being Sam Houston State and Central Arkansas with five straight winning seasons. It also ranks as the 5th longest running streak in the FCS. duplessis a great success story Sophomore linebacker Ed Duplessis was a member of the Cowboys 2013 signing class. On Saturday he ll step foot on the game field for the first time. Duplessis (6-2, 206), a native of Covington and product of St. Paul s HS, has overcome not one, but two, achilles tendon tears and appears to be 100-percent for the first time in his college career. In the final scrimmage of preseason camp, Duplessis, working with the 1 and 2 defensive units, led the pack with eight tackles to go along with a sack and forced fumble. kent shelby returns to lineup after injury Sophomore wideout Kent Shelby was expecting to have a promising freshman season last year until a knee injury in the third game of the season cut it short. After surgery and an extensive rehab stint, the 6-3, 194-pound New Orleans native (Shaw HS) is at the top of the depth chart and is expected to be Sams No. 1 target this season. During his short stint last year, Shelby made 4 catches for 108 yards.

Richard Dow is the host along with Cowboy head coach Matt Viator.

10 One of the most successful coaches in the NCAA s FCS division, McNeese s Matt Viator has guided the Cowboys to winning seasons in all eight of his years at the helm and is one of three head coaches in school history to never post a losing season, joining Les DeVall ( ) and Ernie Duplechin ( ). He s the only coach Southland Conference history to have a winning season each year in his career with a minimum of nine seasons under his belt. In his nine seasons, Viator has compiled a record for a winning percentage of.680, passing legendary head coach Jack Doland last season as the No. 2 winningest coach in school history. He needs 10 wins to tie leader Bobby Keasler (78 wins). He s recorded a league mark of (.714), has won three conference championships and made four FCS playoff appearances, including a second round showing in That 2013 season saw the Cowboys post its second 10-win regular season under Viator, eighth in school history, when they finished 10-3, including a 6-1 mark in the conference. And for the second consecutive year, McNeese defeated a FBS opponent when it clobbered South Florida It was the first-ever win for McNeese over a BCS conference opponent. That win set a NCAA record as well as the 53 points scored by the Cowboys were the most ever scored by a FCS squad over a BCS team while the 32-point margin of victory was also an NCAA record. As a result of the team s success, Viator was named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award as the FCS National Coach of the Year. It was the third time in his career to be named a finalist (2006, 2007). The 2014 Cowboys appeared to be well on their way to another playoff appearance and possible championship as they cruised to a 6-2 record through the first eight games. One of those losses came at the hands of Nebraska where the Cowboys nearly pulled off one of the greatest upsets in college football history before Husker All-American running back Ameer Abdullah choreographed one of the greatest plays on the season in leading Nebraska to a last-minute, win over the Pokes. McNeese s efforts drew a standing ovation from the 70-plus thousand of the Big Red Nation in attendance as the team walked off the field. Injuries then struck the Cowboys as they went on to lose their final three games of the season. It was the first three-game skid since The Cowboy coach, a graduate of McNeese, had served as an assistant coach on the staff for eight years before stepping into the top job four games deep into the 2006 season. Taking over a squad that had won but one of its first four games he led the team to a 6-2 record the rest of the way that year, won the SLC title and put his team into the NCAA championship playoffs. That was the start of one of the most electrifying coaching rises in conference history as the very next year his team posted only the fourth undefeated, untied regular season record in the university s history, won the league title for a second year and participated in the NCAA FCS championship for a second straight year. Since then his team also won the 2009 title and finished second in the league standings in 2008, 2010 and MattViator McNeese State, 1986 Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Finalist 2013, 2007, nd winningest coach in school history Only head coach in SLC history to post a winning season every year with a minimum of nine seasons Head Coach (68-32, 10th season as Head Coach; 17th overall) Coach Viator with Larry the Cable Guy in Nebraska. The Cable Guy spoke to the Cowboy team the night before the Nebraska game.

11 Viator has earned numerous coaching honors including two SLC coach of the year awards and a Louisiana collegiate coach of the year honor in addition to being a finalist for the national award. He claimed his first collegiate coaching victory in his very first game as head coach when the Cowboys posted a win over Southern Utah in His 50th win came in exciting fashion as the Cowboys defeated conference foe Stephen F. Austin on Homecoming night on Oct. 27, Viator is the 14th head coach in McNeese history. His 6-2 rookie record included a 5-1 mark in league play as the team won its final five league games of the year. His teams have been ranked in the top 25 national polls in six of the last eight seasons and climbed to as high as No. 4 for a couple weeks late in Prior to his becoming head coach, Viator had served the university as offensive coordinator and is regarded as one of the top Division I offensive minds. The Cowboys have ranked among the national leaders in offense for nine of the past 13 years and the university has also produced the Southland Conference s top offensive performer four of the last nine seasons. His offenses have led the league in scoring five times and last year, set school records for total points scored in a season (520) and ended the regular season ranked No. 4 in the nation (1st in the Southland Conference) with a 42.5 points scored per game average. The Cowboys also set a school record by scoring 50 or more points in five games on the season. In 2009, Viator coached the nation s leading scorer in tailback Toddrick Pendland, and three years ago, had the No. 2 punt returner in the country in Darius Carey. Before he joined McNeese, Viator was one of the top prep coaches in Louisiana, producing an won-lost record, winning one state crown and five league titles. He joined McNeese in 1999 as linebacker coach and was made offensive coordinator in 2000, the Cowboys leading the league in both scoring offense and total offense that year. He is married and wife Schantel, is a school teacher. His father is the late Nolan Viator, a former Cowboy coach, player (QB, MVP) and is a member of the McNeese Hall of Fame.
