Since 2002 the Broncos have been in at least one of the polls for 23 weeks. During that time Boise State has compiled an impressive 21-2 record, a 91.3 winning percentage. Boise State was 3-0 in 2002, 5-0 in 2003, 9-1 in 2004, 0-1 in 2005 and 4-0 this season. Boise State, which has only been a member of the WAC for five seasons, is the active leader in championships. The Broncos have won 34 of 35 conference games since the beginning of 2002 for a winning percentage of 97.1 percent in league games. During the same time frame, only USC (34-2, 94.4%) has won more than 90 percent of their league games and more than 30 games. Texas (30-4, 88.2%), West Virginia (23-4, 85.2%) and Oklahoma (28-5, 84.8%) round out the top five. BRONCOS WINNERS OF 51 OF LAST 57 GAMES: Boise State has been a dominant program during the last 57 games winning 89.5 percent of its games. The Broncos are 51-6 dating back to the third game of the 2002 season. The Broncos started the 55-game stretch with a win at Wyoming. BOISE STATE WINNERS OF 49 OF LAST 51 ON BLUE TURF: Boise State s win over Louisiana Tech on the Blue on Sept. 23 moved the Broncos record to 49-2 since the beginning of the 1999 season. 6 fifth add/fact sheet: boise state vs. idaho BRONCOS LEAD WAC IN EIGHT SEPARATE CATEGORIES INCLUDING SCORING DEFENSE, TOTAL DEFENSE, RUSHING DEFENSE AND OFFENSE; BOISE STATE ALSO RANKS HIGH NATIONALLY: Boise State s 7-0 start can be traced to the stats the team has put up through five games. Defensively, Boise State leads the WAC in scoring defense (14.7 ppg), rushing defense (77.9 yards per game), total defense (298.3 yards per game), pass defense efficiency (113.0) and sacks (20). On offense, the Broncos lead the league in rushing offense (228.1) and fourth down conversions (9-for-10). The Broncos also lead the league in field goals making 88.9 percent (8-of-9). Nationally, Boise State is sixth in scoring offense (39.43) and rushing offense ( ypg), eighth in turnover margin (1.14), 10th in rushing defense (77.86), 16th in pass efficiency (154.6), and 18th in scoring defense (14.71 ppg). GO FOR IT!: Boise State converted on two of three fourth down conversions against New Mexico State, failing to convert only on a 4th-and-8 with the game in hand with 15 seconds to play in the game. The Broncos have now converted on a 9-of-10 fourth-down conversions this year. The Broncos 90 percent success rate is fourth in the country, trailing only Iowa (4-for-4), Florida State (2-for-2) and Illinois (1-for-1). BRONCOS CONVERTING ON NEARLY 90 PERCENT OF TRIPS INTO RED ZONE: Boise State has taken advantage of its trips to the red-zone. The Broncos have scored on 33 of 37 trips inside the opponents 20-yard line through seven games. Boise State has 26 touchdowns (20 rushing) and seven field goals after moving the ball inside the 20. SENSATIONAL SOPHOMORES!: While Boise State has 13 seniors who either outright start or share a starting spot, it may be an impressive sophomore class that has been most important to Boise State s success this season. The Broncos have seven sophomores who are listed as starters or co-starters. On offense, the Broncos boast three sophomore starters in tailback Ian Johnson and offensive lineman Ryan Clady and Andrew Woodruff. Clady and Woodruff have been dominating helping Johnson roll up 998 rushing yards, a total of per game which ranks sixth in the country. Throw in backup wide receiver/running back Vinny Perretta, who is second on the team in rushing with 190 yards and has caught six passes for 88 yards, and wide receiver Jeremy Childs (7 catches, 75 yards, 1 TD) and the sophomore on offense are even more impressive. Defensively, Orlando Scandrick is the starter at one cornerback spot while linebackers Kyle Gingg and David Shields are listed as co-starters at the Will. Mike T. Boise State has a total of 14 sophomores on the two-deep, as well as a pair of freshman. BRONCOS 3-4 IN LAST SEVEN GAMES AGAINST BCS CONFERENCE TEAMS: After starting 0-11 as a 1-AA program and a young Division 1-A school, Boise State has won three of its last seven games against BCS conference schools. Since 2002, Boise State has two wins over Oregon State and one win over Iowa State, while losing to the Beavers twice in Corvallis by a combined five points, at Georgia, and at home in the MPC Computers Bowl by six points to Boston College. The Broncos are 1-0 against Big 12 teams, 2-10 against Pac-10 teams, 0-1 against Big Ten and Big East teams and 0-4 against SEC teams. Johnson was named the Walter Camp Foundation National Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for a career-best 240 yards and five touchdowns on 22 carries. He also caught one pass for 21 yards. Johnson averaged 10.9 yards per carry with a career-long 59-yard touchdown run among his five touchdowns. His five scoring runs covered 59, 4, 3, 19, and 50 yards. QUINTON JONES NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA AS PUNT RETURNER: Senior cornerback/punt returner Quinton Jones earned some serious pre-season recognition when he was named Pre-Season All-America by Blue Ribbon College Football Yearbook. Jones claimed the award after having a stellar season returning kicks as a junior. He was named a Second-Team All- America after last season by The Sporting News and Honorable Mention All-American by SI.com after returning three kicks for touchdowns and finishing the season with a school-record 20.9 yard per punt return average. The Elko, Nevada native is the starter at right guard for the Broncos. For Cavender it is the third different position he has been in the starting lineup at in his three seasons as a starter at Boise State. As a freshman Cavender started all 12 of Boise State s games at right tackle. With the emergence of this year s starting left tackle Ryan Clady, Cavender moved to center as a sophomore where he started all 13 games. Now, because of an injury to his twin brother, Pete, and the emergence of Jadon Dailey at center, Cavender starts at right guard for the Broncos. While Boise State starts three players who started on the offensive line last season, only Tad Miller plays the same position as last season. In addition to Cavender s move to guard, Clady moved from starting right tackle to left tackle. JEFF CAVENDER CHANGES NUMBER TO HONOR INJURED TWIN BROTHER PETE: Jeff Cavender will be wearing a familiar number this season, the only thing is it isn t familiar to Cavender. The junior starting guard switched from number 54 to number 64 to honor his twin brother Pete, who normally wears 64 but will miss the season with an Achilles injury. Jeff, who is listed in the media guide as number 54, surprised his brother wearing the number in the season opener against Sacramento State. He will wear 64 the remainder of the season. STREAKING RECEIVERS: With three catches against New Mexico State, senior Jerard Rabb extended his streak of consecutive games with a catch to 20 games. Fellow senior Legedu Naanee had two catches for 36 yards, extending his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 17 games. Seniors Derek Schouman and Drisan James both extended their streaks to four games. Browning, a three-year starter leads Boise State in sacks and tackles for loss with 5.0 of each. He ranks second in the WAC in sacks and 31st in the country. Browning is eighth on the team with 23 total tackles. He had 35 as a sophomore and 31 as a junior. Ellis addition has given the defense a big boost. After battling injuries for much of the spring and fall, Ellis is finally healthy and making an impact. After seeing limited time in the season opener against Sacramento State, Ellis moved into the starting lineup against Oregon State. He responded with a career-high seven tackles. He bettered that with eight tackles at Wyoming, had five tackles against Hawaii, three against Utah, five against Louisiana Tech with a sack, and then had three tackles and a sack at New Mexico State. KYLE STRINGER LEADS COUNTRY IN PUNTING: Senior punter Kyle Stringer ranks first in the country and first in the WAC in punting. Stringer is averaging yards per punt. On the season, Stringer has punted 23 times for 1,076 yards with a long of 61 yards. He also has pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line six times. STRINGER BREAKS 35-YEAR OLD RECORD: Boise State punter Kyle Stringer broke the single-game record that has stood the longest in the Boise State record books against Wyoming when he averaged 50.1 yards on his seven punts against the Cowboys. His promotion to head coach was well deserved. In five seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Dan Hawkins, Petersen was twice (2002 and 2004) a finalist for the prestigious Broyles Award, which honors the nation s top assistant coach. During his five seasons leading the Bronco offense, the Broncos boasted the top scoring offense in the country averaging 41.6 points per game, while also finishing as the nation s top scoring team twice (2002 and 2003). Boise State also finished second (2004), ninth (2005) and 18th (2001) in scoring with Petersen as the offensive coordinator. Under Petersen s guidance leading the offense, Boise State has sported one of the most balanced offenses in the country. Running back Lee Marks and wide receiver Drisan James were named to the second team. The Bronco offense led the WAC in rushing and finished second in the league in scoring. In 2004 Petersen helped Zabransky pick up where Dinwiddie left off. The sophomore earned second-team All-WAC honors while leading the Broncos to their first undefeated regular season in the history of the school as a four-year institution. He was also named WAC Player of the Week twice, following wins over Oregon State and Hawai i. Zabransky was one of seven Broncos to either earn firstteam, second-team or honorable mention All-WAC recognition in Wide receiver T.J. Acree and Colledge both were named to the All-WAC first team. Zabransky and center Klayton Adams were named second-team All-WAC; while wide receiver Drisan James, Marks, and tight end Andy Weldon were honorable mention All-WAC. Dinwiddie was just one of five players to find a spot on the All-WAC team in 2003 under Petersen. In addition to Dinwiddie, Tim Gilligan earned first-team All-WAC honors as a wide receiver, while Colledge was second-team All-WAC on the offensive line and running back David Mikell and wide receiver Jerry Smith were honorable-mention selections. During his time at Boise State, Petersen has seen his players rewrite the Bronco record books. Dinwiddie is the all-time passing yards leader, single season passing yards leader, and career pass efficiency leader. Forsey, who played for Petersen for two years, is the single season rushing leader at Boise State, as well as the single season and career touchdown leader. Gilligan and Billy Wingfield rank one and two on the single-season receiving yards list, while Gilligan is second on the single season receptions list. Lawrence Bady set a new school record in 2003 with an average of 25.0 yards per reception and also holds the career record for average yards per catch with yards per catch. In 2004 the Broncos finished second in the nation in total offense, but set a school record scoring 48.9 points per game, 3.3 more points per game than the old record set in The Broncos finished in the top 20 in the country in five different categories and in the top five in two. In addition to finishing second in scoring, the Broncos were fourth in total offense ( yards per game), 11th in pass efficiency (146.34), 14th in rushing offense ( yards per game), and 20th in passing offense ( yards per game). Boise State s offense topped the WAC in five separate categories in 2004 under Petersen. The Broncos were number one in scoring offense, total offense, pass efficiency, first downs and red zone offense. Boise State was second in rushing offense, time of possession, while ranking third in the league in pass offense and third-down conversions. The 2003 season marked the second straight year the Bronco offense led the country in scoring under Petersen. Boise State averaged points per game, while also ranking in the top seven in three other categories. The Broncos were third in passing efficiency at , fifth in passing offense with yards per game, and seventh in total offense averaging yards per game. Boise State was also either first or second in the WAC in six separate categories. The Broncos led the league in scoring offense, pass efficiency, and third-down conversions (43.1 percent). Petersen took the Bronco offense to new heights in After leading the offense to three top 20 national rankings in 2001, he engineered the Bronco offense into five top 20 rankings including three national leaders. Boise State led the country in scoring offense averaging 45.6 points per game, total offense averaging yards per game, and passing efficiency with a rating of The Broncos were also 12th in passing offense, 14th in fewest interceptions, and 22nd in rushing. Boise State s offense was even more dominating in the WAC under Petersen. Boise State led the league in five categories (scoring, total offense, pass efficiency, red zone offense, and fewest interceptions), was second in three others (rushing offense, first

Individually, players got the chance to put up big numbers in the Bronco offense under Petersen. Running back Forsey was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Year after leading the country in scoring, finishing fifth in all-purpose yards, and 11th in rushing (he led the WAC in all three categories). Quarterbacks Dinwiddie and B.J. Rhode combined to lead the country in passing efficiency, while wide receivers Wingfield, Lou Fanucchi, and Jay Swillie made assaults on the Bronco record book. In all, seven Bronco offensive players earned All-WAC honors with Forsey, Dinwiddie, center Scott Huff, and guard Rob Vian all finding spots on the first team. In 2001 under Petersen, the Boise State offense finished in the Top 20 in three separate categories. The Broncos were 14th in total offense, 18th in scoring offense, and 20th in passing offense. In addition Peterson had three players named first-team All-WAC and two players drafted by NFL teams. Petersen s tutelage of Dinwiddie was instrumental in Boise State s offensive success. Petersen helped Dinwiddie develop from a sophomore quarterback with no career starts, to the fourth most efficient quarterback in the country in Dinwiddie also finished fifth in the country in Points Responsible for, 11th in total offense, and 29th in passing. Petersen came to Boise State from the University of Oregon where he joined the coaching staff in 1995, and immediately helped contribute to a passing attack that ranked among the nation s elite each of the six seasons he served as wide receivers coach. Twice during Petersen s stay at Oregon, offensive teams he was linked to broke the school record for single season passing yards, and three times in the same time period the Ducks broke the single season school record for most touchdowns. In the process, Petersen had a hand in the development of four of Oregon s top six all-time receivers. Prior to working at Oregon, Petersen served as the quarterbacks coach at Portland State University in 1993 and 1994, helping the Vikings advance to the NCAA Division II playoffs both seasons. In 1992, Petersen also guided the quarterbacks at the University of Pittsburgh. That season, the Panthers established a school record for passing yards and ranked eighth nationally in total offense and passing. In addition, he contributed to the development of first-team All-Big East Conference quarterback Alex Van Pelt, who eclipsed the school s passing yardage totals previously held by Dan Marino. Petersen s success as a coach can be directly linked to a record-setting career as a quarterback at his Alma mater, U.C. Davis. He was named the Northern California Athletic Conference Player of the Year as a senior and was the top rated Division II quarterback in the nation. Petersen received second team Kodak Division II All-American honors while at U.C. Davis and still holds the Division II record for career pass completion at 69.6 percent. After receiving his bachelor s degree in Psychology from U.C. Davis in 1988, Petersen started his coaching career at Davis, serving as the head freshmen coach in , and the receivers coach from Petersen also holds a master s degree in Education Psychology from U.C. Davis. He and his wife, Barbara, are the parents of two sons, Jack (11) and Sam (8).

23 22nd add/fact sheet: boise state vs. idaho The Last Meeting Boise State 70, Idaho 35 November 19, Bronco Stadium - Boise, Idaho Boise State scored 35 straight points in the second half to break open a close game en route to a win over Idaho at Bronco Stadium. It was the sixth consecutive win for the Broncos over the Vandals. Tied with Idaho midway through the third quarter, the Boise State defense came up with a big play to regain the momentum as well as the lead. Idaho faced a third-and-four from their own 47 looking to take the lead. Instead, linebacker Colt Brooks came on a blitz, stripped Idaho quarterback Steven Wichman of the ball and watched as Austin Smith scooped up the loose ball and raced 39 yards for a touchdown. Boise State led and never looked back. The Broncos rallied behind big plays from the special teams and defense. Smith s touchdown was one of three non-offensive touchdowns scored by the Broncos. Punt returner had a huge day for the Broncos. The junior cornerback returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown and scored on a 50-yard reverse in his only play on offense. Jones finished with a school record 143 punt return yards, while producing 247 all-purpose yards (50 rushing, 54 kickoff return and 143 punt return). Boise State also scored on an interception when true freshman Orlando Scandrick picked off a Wichman pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown to give the Broncos a lead. The win allowed Boise State to run its home winning streak to 31 games. The streak is tied for the 12th longest in Division I history with Texas A&M ( ) and is also tied for the seventh longest in modern day history (since 1937). Boise State also set a series record by scoring 70 points against the Vandals, while also scoring the third-most points in school history. Boise State scored 77 points against San Jose State in 2003 and 74 against Humboldt State in Boise State s 35 points in the fourth quarter also is the second most in school history in a single quarter. The Broncos scored 39 last season in the third quarter against Hawai i, while scoring 35 against Weber State in Individually, Lee Marks led the Broncos with 102 yards rushing and a 39-yard touchdown on just nine carries. The 100-yard night was Marks second of the season. He also had 110 yards on four kickoff returns. Jerard Rabb had 69 yards on three catches to lead the Broncos in receiving.
