1 UNITED SAVINGS - HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDA KEITH WILKES, SANTA BARBARA HIGH STAR is "AAAA" C.I.F. BASKETBALL PLAYER OF 1970 FOR RELEASE: TUESDAY, MARCH 24TH...and after DON'T BREAK RELEASE Keith Wilkes, 6-6 and 170-pound senior forward for Santa Barbara's dandy Dons, was the Helms Board's unanimous choice as "AAAA" CIF Player of the Year for 1970 as All-Southern California Board of Athletics met at Helms Hall to make its annual all-star team selections. There were several top MVP candidates, any one of whom would have made a good choice in any other year, but Wilkes, leading championship drives in CIF playoff action over the past two seasons had no serious pretenders to his rightful MVP throne. An all-channel League selection over the past three years two at Ventura High and one at Santa Barbara the wonderful Wilkes got Ventura High as far as the semi-finals last year, as he averaged 20.7 points from his center position. This year, moving to Santa Barbara with his family (his father, a minister, was transfered) Wilkes was moved to forward by Don coach Jack Trigueiro where he performed in championship fashion for the second straight year. Moving out from under the basket to his new forward position in 1970, Wilkes elevated his average to 24.1 points in 27 games, 26 of which were a string of victories carrying through the season to the semi-finals of the "AAAA" playoffs. Going virtually untested in the Channel League, the Dons came into the playoffs with a perfect record and atop the high school ratings. They commenced to whip some classy competition...santa Monica (74-6l), Morningside (58-56), and Notre Dame (74-52) before running afoul of the well disciplined Millikan Rams. The Dons got rammed, In the four playoff games Wilkes scored 28, 28, 25 & 17 points, falling below his average against Millikan due in part to a sprained ankle. Over the season Wilkes averaged 16 rebounds per game (430 in 27) and 130 assists. For having been named for Player of the Year honors, Keith Wilkes will receive the Helms medallion award at the 33rd annual All-Southern California Board of Basketball awards program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, April l8th, at 10:30 a.m. All players named for all-star team honors, along with their coaches, will be special invited guests on this big occasion. Top team honors in "AAAA" Division basketball for 1970 went to coach Howard Lyon< s Millikan Rams...a well-rounded, well-disciplined team that played well at both ends of the court and failed to read the opposition's press clippings. The Rams wound up 28-3 on the year, whipping some of the Southlands best quintets. Moore League champions, Millikan upended Dominguez (63-56), Pioneer (57-53), Sunny Hills (64-47), Santa Barbara (66-53) and Pacific League upstart Monrovia in the finale, in as onesided a title game as can be recalled. In dominating "AAAA" CIP play in 1970, Millikan placed three performers on the all-star teams. Classy center Dave Frost was a 1st team selection, while guard Dan Peters and forward Richard Plante were 2nd and 3rd team selections respectively. Palos Verdes, another strong contender for top "AAAA" billing, a had a banner year on the hardwood. Coach John Mihaljevich's Sea Kings bumped Buena (73-5]+), West Covina (63-53), Compton (49-45) and were then edged by Monrovia in an "anybodys" game. With a wealth of individual talent in the "AAAA" Division, only four schools placed more than one performer on the honor teams. Led by champion Millikan's three, Santa Barbara, Palos Verdes and Sunny Hills landed two players each. Keith Wilkes, Marc Palmer and Bill Ingram are back from last year's first team, while Pius X guard Thomas Perrato, a 2nd team pick in 1969, was named to the 3rd team this year. For the 19th year, the AMP-VOIT Rubber Corporation will again present miniature basketballs to the honored CIP players in all divisions. As they have so kindly done in past years, representatives of VOIT BASKETBALLS AWARDED TO ALL-STARS AT 33RD ANNUAL AWARDS PROGRAM SAT. APRIL 18 Voit will be on hand at Helms Hall to honor those players named for honors by the Helms Hall Board. Coaches of honored players and other

3 UNITED SAVINGS - HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION RAYMOND LEWIS, VERBUM DEI GUARD, SELECTED TOP C.I.F..."AAA" BASKETBALL PLAYER IN '70 FOR RELEASE: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25TH...and after (***DO NOT BREAK RELEASE DATE!!!) Raymond Lewis, classy little guard who led coach Caldwell Black's Verbum Dei Eagles to the "AAA" Division basketball title for 1970, was named Player of the Year in triple "A" play when members of Helms Athletic Foundation's All- Southern California Board of Athletics met at Helms Hall last week to make their annual all-star team selections. Coach Black calls his star performer "the best guard in the CIF" and Helms Board members certainly agreed with him in naming Lewis for "AAA" MVP honors. A 1st team "AA" selection last year when the Eagles from Verbum Dei won the double "A" top spot over Katella 90-87, Lewis came back strong in 1970 to average 21.3 points per contest over their 28-game season. Only a junior, Lewis was the MVP in the Santa Fe League and wound up on the all-league team with three of his teammates...bob Walters, Adrian Chivers and Mike Blackshire. Walters and Blackshire were also named to the "AAA" CIF honor teams along with Lewis. The Verbum Dei Eagles literally flew over all opposition in the playoffs. First victim was Beverly Hills (98-82) and then came North Riverside (77-55); Villa Park (113-97), Rancho Alamitos (94-75) and Fermin Lasuen in the finals, A remarkably high scoring team during the season; the Eagles set a new CIF Southern Section single-game scoring mark during the regular season against Pater Noster. The score was bettering the old high-water mark of 129, which was scored by Compton in a 1968 win over Lynwood, This marks the 33rd year that Helms Athletic Foundation has sponsored All- Southern California Board of Athletics, which annually names all-star teams in the major high school sports. All players named for honors on this year's "AAA" teams will receive special scroll awards. Player of the Year Ray Lewis and his coach Caldwell Black will also receive special medallion and silver tumbler awards at the 33rd annual awards program to be held at Helms Hall on Sat., April 18th at 10:30 a.m. All-star team selections made over the past 33 years are the result of much hard work, time and effort expended by Southern California sports journalists. 5 GREG LEE, RESEDA HIGH SCHOOL, NAMED MVP IN L.A. CITY BASKETBALL FOR_SECOND YEAR IN'70 FOR RELEASE: SATURDAY AFTERNOON, FEB. 7th and Sunday a.m. DO NOT RELEASE PRIOR TO SAT.. FEB. 7 p.m. Gregory Lee who, under the coaching leadership of his father Marvin Lee, has directed the Reseda Regents to the top of the West-Valley League heap over the past three seasons, was a unanimous selection as Los Angeles City Basketball Flayer of the Year for 1970 as members of the Helms Athletic Foundation's selection Board met to make their annual all-star team selections. Lee, who was recipient of similar honors last year, was a standout performer again in Greg scored more points than any other player in city league action this past season with 290 points in 10 games. Greg's coach and father was most candid in his evaluation of this year's top prep performer. "Should repeat as Player of the Year in the city," was coach Lee's simple and direct comment. Greg has been a classy performer on the hard court for three seasons, having been a third-team all-city selection as a sophomore when he averaged 20 points per game. Last season he boasted a 27.3 point-per-game average as city Player of the Year. His scoring totals were most impressive this season (29 point avg.), but his assists and rebounding were of equal importance. Greg averaged nine assists and 8 rebounds per contest. Reseda won the West-Valley League title with a perfect 10-0 mark and stormed into the playoffs hoping to nail down its first city roundball title. The crown had escaped the Regents last year as Palisades beat them in the finals. And the West-Valley champs were on their way toward this goal with wins over Fairfax 70-69, and Locke, Then came Palisades in the semi-finals and the Regents lost again to the Dolphins, Although Reseda pulled down individual honors, contributing the city's MVP, Greg Lee, and another first teamer in Gary Franklin, who was also all-city timber last year, it was the Jordan High Bulldogs that captured team honors. Under coach Bobbie Brown the Bulldogs won 18 straight games in a perfect season. City champions in 1966 under coach John Randolph, this year's team ran, pressed and shot its way through all opposition, averaging over 100 points per contest in league play and then blowing over four tournament opponents in quick order. The Bulldogs, which under coach Brown's two-year regime have an astounding 33-1 record, whipped Monroe (108-69), Taft (80-70), Dorsey (76-52) and Palisades in the finale (64-53)...demonstrated that none of its opponents could cope with Jordan's two-platoon, run and press tactics. Jordan placed three performers on the all-city teams Preston Scott, John Jones and Phaynes Reeda third respectively. League champions in the eight city loops were as follows: on first, second and CHAMPION LEAGUE COACH RECORD LEAGUE RUNNER-UP JORDAN EASTERN BOBBIE BROWN B E L L ( 7-3) LOCKE MARINE BOBBIE POUNDS NARBONNE (8-2) LINCOLN NORTHERN ELISEO NINO 9-1 MARSHALL (6-4) BELMONT NORTHERN TOM ARIMA 9-1 MARSHALL (6-4) JEFFERSON SOUTHERN LARRY HANSON 9-1 DORSEY-FREMONT (7-3) CRENSHAW... WEST-VALLEY..MARVIN LEE 10-0 TAFT (6-4) Thirteen schools are represented on this year's all-city basketball all-star teams. Champion Jordan placed three performers, one on each of the three clubs, while Reseda, which whipped Dorsey for third place in city playoff action, had two representatives. Dorsey and Locke also had two players named to the all-star teams, while city runner-up Palisades placed one performer. For the first time in 1970, the Helms selection board named players without thought of position. Since most coaches now employ a rotating form of offense and defense, it was the board's feeling that to assign players positions served little purpose. Pick up all-city teams on following page...

8 CRENSHAW S ALFONSO BRIGHAM PICKED WESTERN LEAGUE'S TOP ROUND BALLER, FOR 1970 SEASON FOR RELEASE: WEDNESDAY, FEB and after Crenshaw High's Alfonso Brigham who, as the league's leading scorer (19.8 avg) led coach Jim Ryan's five to the Western League crown with an 8-2 record, received majority backing from coaches and Helms Board members alike as he was named for MVP honors in the annual Los Angeles City league roundball selections conducted at Helms Hall. With the cooperation of league coaches, these selections have been carried on since 1938 by the Helms Athletic Foundation Board. Crenshaw High edged Palisades for the number one spot in league play by one game...as the Dolphins finished the regular season with a 7-3 record. Venice (6-4), Westchester (3-7), University (3-7) and Hamilton (3-7) finished behind the Crenshaw and Palisades crews in that order. The Western League did well in playoff action as the Dolphins went to the playoff finals beating Belmont (79-67), Jefferson (76-66) and Reseda (65-60)...before going under in the title game to the Jordan Bulldogs. Crenshaw dumped Bell in the first round of playoff action, 96-77, but was then edged by Dorsey, All-league teams have been selected by the Helms Board, with the good cooperation of Los Angeles coaches, since All players named for honors receive scroll awards at the close of each season. * * * F I R S T T E A M All-Western League JAY HANSETH PALISADES Senior 2t).. 2 +ALF0NS0 BRIGHAM.. Selection of the teams is made by the Helms Board of prep sportswriters in cooperation with the league coaches. Paul Caldwell, who led Dorsey to a runner-up tie with Fremont in league play, wound up with the city's best average (29.1 in 8 games), while Glenn McDonald of Jeff was number two in league scoring behind Paul with 238 points in 10 games. Coach Hanson calls McDonald "the city's best and has played every position for us." Coach George Hamilton of Dorsey refers to Caldwell in glowing terms and also to 6-6, 190- pound Ken Gray, whom he calls "the best player in the city." The Southern League representatives did well in city playoff action. Runner-up Dorsey beat Mid-Valley champs Granada Hills (78-76), Western League champs Crenshaw (71-69), but then fell to eventual city title-winners Jordan (76-52). 9 GRANADA HILLS' JOHN GIBSON SALUTED AS TOP MID-VALLEY BASKETBALL PERFORMER FOR 1970 FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, FEB and after John Gibson, coach Barry Bass' star forward and Mid-Valley League scoring champion, was acclaimed as the loop's top player for 1970 by league coaches and Helms Board members alike as annual roundball all-star team selections were made at Helms Hall. Gibson, who averaged over 20 points per game for the Highlanders, is hailed by his coach as "a team player and outstanding in every way...he can go entire game and is extremely coachable." The Highlanders wound up atop the Mid-Valley League ladder with a perfect 10-0 mark, but were edged in the first round of the playoffs, by Dorsey. * Runner-up Monroe (7-3) did little better, as the Vikings bumped into the Jordan buzz saw, , in first-round action. The placing of other teams was San Fernando (6-4), Poly & Birmingham (3-7) abd Van Nuys (l-9). Board members making the annual league and all-city selections are Avrum Dansky (LA Times), Wayne Wilson (Valley-News), David Lopez (Huntington Park Signal), Bob Cuomo (Valley Times-Citizen News), Steve Brand (IA Herald-Examiner), Tom Coulter (San Pedro News-Pilot), Dan McLean (South Bay Daily Breeze), and Mike Pardridge (Santa Monica Outlook). Ruben led the Railspitters to a 9-1 season, as the Belmont Sentinels were matching Lincoln's record. Teams finishing behind the co-champs were Marshall (6-4), Franklin and Wilson (3-7), with Eagle Rock at (0-10). Both Northern Loop entrants in the playoffs went out early...lincoln bowing to Locke, 62-57, and Belmont going under to Palisades, Two Lincoln players, MVP Balles and Robert Duran were named to the all-star second team in No other players repeated from last year's all-stars. 10 GREGORY LEE, RESEDA GUARD, REPEATS AS TOP WEST-VALLEY BASKETBALL PLAYER FOR'70 SEASON FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, FEB and after Gregory Lee, Reseda Regents star guard, was a unanimous selection as the West- Valley League Player of the Year for the second straight year by vote of loop coaches and Helms Hall Board members as the annual all-star team picks were made at Helms Hall. Lee, at 6-4 and 185 pounds, did an outstanding job for his coach and father, Marvin Lee leading Reseda to its third league crown in as many years... although in 1968 they shared the honor with Canoga Park and Taft. Lee scored more points than any other city player this year in league action in 10 games... although he finished second average-wise to Dorsey's Paul Caldwell (233 in 8 games, for a 29.1 avg.). Behind Reseda in league came Taft (6-4), Chatsworth (5-5), Cleveland and Canoga Park (4-6) and EL Camino Real (1-9). Canoga Park was forced to forfeit three games, which knocked them out of second place. In playoff action Reseda got through two engagements Fairfax (70-69) and Locke (86-71), before losing to Palisades, Taft knocked off Grant 71-64, before losing to Jordan, All players named for honors will be recipients of Helms scroll awards. Greg Lee, as league Player of the Year, will receive the Helms medallion award. * * * F I R S T T E A M All West-Valley League *GARY FRANKLIN... RESEDA $ Senior 24.2 LARRY DeANGELO... Although coaches and Board members alike assessed Jordan High's success in 1970 as one of "just too many horses" it was agreed that 6-foot, 3-inch Preston Scott was the "juice" that made coach Brown's team percolate through 18 straight games without defeat this season. ; Although Scott's average was a modest 13.1 points per contest, no one on coach Brown's 10-man juggernaut set the world on fire point-wise. Six Bulldogs were in.' double figures for the year, however, which points up why Jordan averaged over 100^ points per game. Jordan, followed in league by Bell (7-3), Garfield (5-5), Roosevelt (4-6), Sotuh Gate (3-7) and Huntington Park (1-9), stormed through the city playoffs beating Monroe by 39 points (108-69), Taft by 10 (80-70), Dorsey by 24 (76-52) and Palisades by 11 (64-53). Brown's Bulldogs were never really tested in the playoffs, as Jordan lost interest in the finals after they'd run up a lead at halftime. * * * F I R S T T E A M All-Eastern League PRESTON SCOTT JORDAN $ Senior 13.1 i PHAYNES REEDA JORDAN $ Senior 10.6 : STEVE SWINNEY SOUTH GATE 6-$ 18$ Senior 18.7 JOHN JONES JORDAN $ Senior 14. $ PAT KING BELL 6-0 l$0 Junior 23.8 * * * SECOND TEAM EDWARD BUCHANAN...
