The University of Connecticut will host first and second round NCAA Tournament games in 2009 at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs. The selection will mark the first time UConn has hosted NCAA Women s Basketball Tournament games at Gampel Pavilion since the 2005 season. The sites were added after the NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Committee announced in the summer of 2007 that the championship would be expanding to 16 pre-determined first- and second-round sites beginning in Additional cities chosen to host first- and second-round games in 2009 include Bowling Green, Kentucky; Chattanooga, Tennessee; East Lansing, Michigan; Iowa City, Iowa; Notre Dame, Indiana; San Diego, California; Seattle, Washington and Storrs, Connecticut. The additional first and second rounds of the 2010 championship will be played in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Ames, Iowa; Cincinnati, Ohio; Durham, North Carolina; Louisville, Kentucky; Norman, Oklahoma; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Tallahassee, Florida and Seattle. The committee was pleased with the amount of interest generated when we announced that we were going to 16 pre-determined sites again in 2009 and 2010, said Judy Southard, senior associate director of athletics at Louisiana State University and chair of the Division I Women s Basketball Committee. To be able to get a good blend of cities that have past hosting experience in combination with a number of new cities and venues is good for the continued growth of the game of women s basketball and our championship. 750 WINS: Connecticut s win in the season opener against Georgia Tech on Nov. 16 marked the 750th win in the history of the UConn women s basketball program. (March 1, 2008) The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics and Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) have signed a new four-year contract extension for CPTV to continue to be UConn s exclusive local market television broadcast partner for women s basketball. Under the agreement, all local television rights for UConn women s basketball which are controlled by the University are assigned to CPTV. All other UConn games are controlled by the BIG EAST Conference and subject to Conference television contracts. The agreement runs from the academic year through and calls for CPTV to televise a minimum of 68 UConn women s basketball games over the fouryear contract period. "The UConn Division of Athletics and Connecticut Public Television have the most unique partnership in college sports television today," says UConn Director of Athletics Jeffrey Hathaway, picutured above with Jerrry Franklin of CPTV. "We are very pleased to announce that our partnership with CPTV to provide local market television coverage of Husky women s basketball games will continue through the season. UConn receives more media attention on both the national and local level than any other women s basketball team in the country and this agreement with CPTV will ensure that will continue for years to come." This latest agreement will generate a minimum of $3,600,000 in cash to the University. CPTV will guarantee UConn seasonal rights of $1,000,000 for the women s basketball local market television rights and that fee for the following years will be -- $1,000,000 in , $800,000 in and $800,000 in The $900,000 average annual rights fee is a 12% increase from the previous contract which averaged $802,000 per year. Among the new elements of the agreement is the ability for the University to share in corporate underwriting revenue and to sell a signature sponsorship associated with women s basketball broadcasts on CPTV. "Connecticut Public Television has set the standard for the televising of college women s basketball," says Hathaway. "CPTV began to televise our women s basketball games in 1994 and has become a very important reason why our women s basketball program enjoys so much success on an annual basis. We appreciate (CPTV President and CEO) Jerry Franklin s leadership and the tremendous support and dedication provided by CPTV s viewers and staff." In addition to the UConn games on CPTV, the agreement calls for the continuation of The Geno Auriemma Show, which appears on CPTV 12 times during the season. 15 UCONN HUSKIES BASKETBALL GAME NOTES , 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 4 NINE FINAL FOURS 4 30 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIPS STORRS, Conn. (November 20,2005) - Tournament Most Valuable Player Mel Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored 20 points on eight of nine shooting and Charde Houston (San Diego, Calif.) had 22 points as No.9/7 Connecticut easily defeated No.25/22 Oklahoma, 82-62, to earn the 2005 Preseason WNIT Championship before 9,722 at Gampel Pavilion. The win was the Huskies fourth straight to start the season. The Sooners slip to 3-1. Thomas, who scored 60 points in the four tournament games, made her first eight shots from the field, before missing a three-pointer with 1:49 to play, with the contest well in hand. Thomas made four of five attempts from long range. Her eight field goals and four three-point successes marked career bests. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Houston, who scored 55 points in the tournament. Other All-Tournament players included Ashley and Courtney Paris of Oklahoma, Brooke Queenan of Boston College and Katie Montgomery of New Mexico. The Huskies earned their third Preseason WNIT title in three tries. Thomas and Houston were joined in double figure scoring by senior forward Barbara Turner (Cleveland, Ohio) who scored 10 points. For Houston, it was the 23rd double figure scoring effort of her UConn career, for Turner, her 63rd. Ann Strother (Castle Rock, Colo.) had a productive afternoon, scoring seven points and tallying game-high totals of seven rebounds and seven assists. Senior forward Wilnett Crockett (Harbor City, Calif.) had six points and seven rebounds off of the Husky bench. Connecticut used sharp shooting from the field (57% shooting) and a suffocating defense (allowed just 38% shooting, while forcing 17 turnovers) to earn the victory. Connecticut made 33 of 58 field goal attempts, and connected on six off 11 from three-point range. Oklahoma enjoyed an early 9-8 lead before the Huskies exploded for a 17-4 run, paced by Houston s seven points, to take a lead with 7:40 before intermission. The Sooners never got closer than nine points the rest of the way. The one area were the Huskies struggled was taking care of the ball, as they committed a season-high 21 turnovers, eight by Houston. The Huskies did improve their record at Gampel Pavilion since February 3, 2000 to a gaudy Courtney Paris led Oklahoma with 19 points on eight of 14 shooting. LAST TIME VS.
