3 2008 Memphis Grizzlies Summer League Notes RECAP The Grizzlies look to rebound after posting a disappointing record in , marking the second consecutive season Memphis finished with 22 victories The Grizzlies went through a period of adjustment after trading the franchise s all-time leading scorer Pau Gasol on February 1, but started to gel on both sides of the ball at the end of the season winning seven of their last 17 games (105.6 points per game over that span). BLOCKBUSTER TRADE The Memphis Grizzlies completed a blockbuster eight-player trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves on draft night (June 26) to acquire the draft rights to versatile guard O.J. Mayo, who has been grabbing national headlines since he played on the varsity squad as a seventh grader for Rose Hill Christian School in Ashland, Kentucky In addition to Mayo (3 rd overall), Memphis received guards Marko Jaric and Greg Buckner and forward Antoine Walker and the Minnesota received the draft rights to forward Kevin Love (5 th ), guard Mike Miller, forward Brian Cardinal and center Jason Collins. PASS THE O.J., HOLD THE MAYO Guard O.J. Mayo, the highest draft selection (3 rd ) from the 2008 NBA Draft participating in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, will make his debut with the Grizzlies Mayo, who averaged 20.7 points, 3.3 assists and 1.6 steals as a freshman last season at USC, is the highest-drafted Trojan ever, surpassing NBA great Paul Westphal (10 th, 1972). FIRST ROUNDERS GALORE The Grizzlies summer league roster boasts four first-round draft picks from the last two drafts (O.J. Mayo/3 rd in 2008; Darrell Arthur/27 th in 2008; Mike Conley/4 th in 2007; Javaris Crittenton/19 th in 2007). BABY GRIZZLIES The Grizzlies have one of the youngest rosters in the NBA... Memphis has seven players under contract that are 23 years old or younger (as of July 1), including Darrell Arthur (20), Mike Conley (20), Javaris Crittenton (20), Rudy Gay (21), Kyle Lowry (22), O.J. Mayo (20) and Darko Milicic (23). ENCORE Guards Mike Conley and Javaris Crittenton will make their second consecutive summer league appearance in Vegas Last summer Conley averaged 11.4 points and 5.2 assists for the Grizzlies, while Crittenton averaged 17.0 points and 3.0 assists with the Lakers. A RUDY AWAKENING Rudy Gay, who averaged a team-high 18.2 points and 5.6 rebounds in last year s NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, broke out in a big way in his sophomore season and finished second in voting for the NBA s Most Improved Player Award behind only Orlando s Hedo Turkoglu The versatile second-year forward nearly doubled his scoring output (20.1) from his rookie season and surpassed his rookie averages in nearly every category, including points per game (10.8), rebounds per game (4.5), assists per game (1.3), field goal percentage (.422), steals per game (0.9) and minutes per game (27.0). Scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds vs. Memphis in the national championship game on April 7, Originally selected with the 27 th overall pick in the first round of the 2008 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Hornets. Led all rookies in assists with a team-high 4.2 per contest, the highest rookie average since the season.
