GREEN BAY PACKERS (5-1) SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4, :00 PM (CENTRAL) ARROWHEAD STADIUM KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI TV: FOX Regional Coverage (WDAF-4 in Kansas City) Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Pam Oliver. RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs and Packers will square off in an interconference match-up at Arrowhead on November 4th. Kansas City will enjoy a bye this week after registering a win at Oakland (10/21), while the Packers are coming off a bye and will return to action with a Monday Night Football contest at Denver (10/29) before facing the Chiefs. After posting wins in four of its last five contests, KC owns sole possession of first place in the AFC West with a 4-3 record. Green Bay owns the lead in the NFC North with a 5-1 mark. It s been 20 years since Green Bay registered its one and only victory in Kansas City. The Packers have lost five straight contests against the Chiefs, Green s Bay longest active losing streak against any NFL franchise and the Packers lengthiest losing stretch vs. any single opponent since dropping eight straight games against Miami from This Chiefs-Packers contest will feature a pair of head coaches who were former Chiefs assistants KC s Herm Edwards and GB s Mike McCarthy who both served on Marty Schottenheimer s staff in the 90s. This contest will likely also mark the final appearance of QB Brett Favre at Arrowhead. Kansas City is the only team that Favre has faced and never defeated. The Chiefs own a perfect 3-0 mark in their previous meetings ( 93, 96 and 2003) with Green Bay s Canton-bound signal caller. Edwards is assembling a Chiefs squad that bears a number of similarities to the Kansas City squads of the 90s that made six consecutive playoff berths on the strength of solid defense, a punishing ground game and domination of the turnover chart. Prior to Monday Night Football, Kansas City and Jacksonville were the only two teams that have held all of their opponents to 20 points or less this season. Dating back to last season, the Chiefs have actually limited 14 of their last 16 foes to 20 points or less. KC has allowed just 113 total points (16.1 ppg) on the season to rank sixth in the league and has permitted just 14.1 offensive ppg. KC has registered a +4 turnover differential (10 takes/6 gives) in its four wins, while RB Larry Johnson has posted a 100-yard rushing performance in three of his last four contests, averaging ypg in the Chiefs last three victories. Under McCarthy, the Packers have thrived in Favre s 17th NFL campaign. Green Bay is tied for second in the NFL in passing offense (223.7 ypg) and is ninth in scoring, averaging 23.7 ppg. The only blemish on the Packers record was a loss vs. Chicago (10/7) STATS AND NFL RANKINGS CHIEFS PACKERS Total Offense (28) (12) Rush Offense (29) 65.7 (32) Pass Offense (19) (2t) Total Defense (11) (15) Rush Defense (17) (12) Pass Defense (9) (22) Turnover Ratio (12t) 0 (19t) Pts./Game (28) 23.6 (9) Opp. Pts./Game (6) 17.8 (11) THE SERIES The Chiefs own a overall record (6-1-1 regular season and 0-1 postseason) in nine previous meetings with the Packers. Including preseason competition, the Chiefs and Packers have squared off at six different sites in the 19 previous meetings between the two teams (11 preseason, seven regular season and one postseason). REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the 60s and actually coined the term Super Bowl. As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact the American Football League has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt s humble styles, the letters LH are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC s jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player. GONZALEZ OWNS NFL TD RECORD FOR TIGHT ENDS Eight-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns 64 career TD catches, the most by a tight end in NFL history. 6 LAST GAME Chiefs 12, Raiders 10 October 21, 2007 McAfee Coliseum 62,240 KANSAS CITY OAKLAND Adding yet another nailbiting chapter to the Chiefs- Raiders rivalry, Kansas City slugged out a win at McAfee Coliseum. Clinging to a two-point lead with under a minute remaining, S Jarrad Page intercepted Raiders QB Daunte Culpepper to seal the win and help the Chiefs become the first franchise to ever defeat the Raiders nine straight times. One the game s opening drive, Kansas City marched down the field and got on the scoreboard first. QB Damon Huard hit WR Dwayne Bowe for a 22-yard pickup and found TE Tony Gonzalez for 20 more yards on the possession. K Dave Rayner would convert a 41-yard FG when the drive stalled for a 3-0 lead. Oakland forced Kansas City to punt late in the first quarter, but as CB Chris Carr called for a fair catch his teammate, CB Nnamdi Asomugha, ran into him. The ball hit Asomugha in the back of the leg and Chiefs S Jon McGraw recovered the loose ball. The Chiefs capitalized with another Rayner field goal for a 6-0 advantage. With Oakland poised to answer, the Chiefs defense made a pivotal stand. On fourth-and-one from the Kansas City 17-yard line, DT Alfonso Boone stopped Oakland RB LaMont Jordan for no gain, turning the ball over on downs. After taking a 6-0 lead into the locker room at the half, Kansas City looked poised to add some breathing room to its margin as RB Larry Johnson broke off a career-long 54- yard run. However, after an 18-yard pass to Gonzalez, the Chiefs offense could move the ball no closer. Rayner had made his first two field goals of the afternoon, but hooked a 30-yard attempt wide left. On the first play of the Raiders ensuing possession, Culpepper hit WR Jerry Porter for a 59-yard gain. On the very next snap he found WR Ronald Curry in the back of the end zone for a 21-yard scoring strike. The sudden momentum change put the Raiders ahead 7-6 late in the third quarter. The Chiefs offense responded with a big play of its own early in the fourth quarter. Huard ducked under a would-be sack from DT Warren Sapp and scrambled left where he lofted a 58-yard strike to Bowe down to the Oakland 16-yard line. Six plays later Johnson finished the drive with a oneyard scoring plunge with 11:30 left in the game. The Chiefs failed on a two-point conversion to make it a seven-point game, but they maintained a five-point lead at Oakland appeared to have a scoring answer of its own as they took the ensuing drive 51 yards to the Chiefs 19-yard line, but a first-down holding call put the Raiders in a hole from which they couldn t escape. Oakland had to settle for a 37-yard Janikowski field goal to cut the score to with 5:53 left to play in regulation. Kansas City burned 4:00 off the clock, but would give the Raiders the ball back at their own 26-yard line with 1:46 left. After Culpepper completed three consecutive passes to push the ball to the Oakland 41-yard line, Page made the play of the day. For the second year in a row the Oakland area native made a game-clinching interception vs. the Raiders, this time preserving the win. In addition to winning their ninth straight contest over the Silver and Black, Chiefs RB Priest Holmes made his return to the field for the first time since playing in a contest at San Diego (10/30/05), a span of 721 days. KC Rayner, 41-yard field goal (10-57, 4:20). KC Rayner, 31-yard field goal (6-16, 2:13). OAK Curry, 21-yard pass from Culpepper (Janikowski kick) (2-80, 0:51). KC L.
