Seven Jaspers hail from New Jersey, while Maeve Parahus and Ashley Stec are New York natives. This year s squad also includes three players from Pennsylvania, as well as one each from Connecticut and New Hampshire. I D LIKE TO BUY A VOWEL Of the 14 players on the Jaspers current roster, three have a unique place in program annals. Sophomore forward Shayna Ericksen is the first player in the program s 35-year history to have a surname starting in the letter E, while junior guard Nicole Isaacs added I to the Jaspers all-time alphabetical roster and Manhattan had never had a player with a last name starting in U prior to sophomore guard Blake Underhill. The only remaining letters that are absent from the all-time roster are Q, X and Y. LIVE NATIONWIDE This evening s contest is the MAAC National Game of the Week on ESPN3. This marks the third straight year in which Manhattan has been featured on an ESPN3 national broadcast. The semifinals of the MAAC Tournament will also be broadcast on ESPN3. REUNION TOUR In addition to the home-and-home series with each of its 10 MAAC opponents, Manhattan faced four of the five former members of the league during non-conference play. The Jaspers welcomed La Salle, Holy Cross and Fordham to Draddy Gymnasium, while also visiting Army. The only former MAAC team not on Manhattan s schedule is Loyola, which joined the Patriot League this season. NEW-LOOK MAAC This season marks the first time since the season that the MAAC has a different conference alignment. As a result of the league s expansion from 10 to 11 schools, the conference schedule was also expanded. Each team will now play 20 MAAC games per season, up from 18. MAAC TOURNEY CHANGES With the addition of Monmouth and Quinnipiac bringing conference membership to 11 schools, the MAAC Tournament will have a new format this season. The top five teams at the conclusion of the regular season will have a bye into the quarterfinals, while the remaining six teams will play first-round games on March 6. After the quarterfinals on March 7, the four winners will be given a day off before the semifinals and finals back-to-back on March The MAAC Championship Game on Monday afternoon, March 10, will once again be nationally televised on ESPNU Manhattan Women s Basketball

This marks the seventh straight year in which all 11MAAC schools are participating in the event. The Jaspers Play 4 Kay game will be the matchup with Saint Peter s on Feb. 6. In addition, the Jaspers once again volunteered at the Susan G. Komen New York City Race for the Cure at Central Park West in September. The team worked the third water station, handing out water to the 25,000 runners/walkers on the 5K course. It was the 10th straight year in which Manhattan participated in the event. WHAT S A JASPER? Manhattan has the only athletic program in Division I with the nickname Jaspers. The unique nickname came from one of Manhattan s most memorable figures, Brother Jasper of Mary, F.S.C. Brother Jasper served the College in the late 1800s and served as the first coach of Manhattan s baseball team. He is credited as the creator of the seventh-inning stretch, which has become a time-honored tradition at ballparks across the country. During a game in the 1880s, Brother Jasper noticed students getting restless in the middle of the seventh inning of a close game, so he called timeout and told the students to stand up a stretch for a few minutes before resuming the game. Since Manhattan regularly played the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds in the 1880s and into the 1890s, the tradition spread into the major leagues. Starting Lineups This is Manhattan s 20th game of the season. The Jaspers have used 12 different starting combinations, with 10 players making at least one start.
