7 THE LAST TIME Broncos 24, Chiefs 17 December 7, 2008 INVESCO Field at Mile High 75,187 KANSAS CITY DENVER In a game that was typical during a disappointing 2008 campaign, the Chiefs lost in the waning moments by a margin at INVESCO Field. The game was in doubt down to the final five minutes and they were one play or one stop by the defense away from victory, but the Chiefs couldn t find that game-turning play as Kansas City dropped its eighth straight game at Denver. After the two teams traded possessions to open the game, the Chiefs offense drove 39 yards on six plays to set up a 26-yard FG by K Connor Barth for an early 3-0 lead. That margin would grow just a few plays later. The Broncos had a third-and-four at their own 25- yard line when QB Jay Cutler looked to his right for WR Brandon Stokely. But rookie CB Maurice Leggett picked off the pass and returned it 27 yards to give the Chiefs a 10-0 lead. Denver finally got its offense together just as the first period was ending. Rookie RB Peyton Hillis ran through the right side of the Kansas City defense untouched for an 18-yard TD to cut the Chiefs lead to The Chiefs came right back with a long, impressive scoring drive, as the offense kept the ball for 17 plays, moved 80 yards and chewed up 7:24 of the first-half clock. KC made a gutsy call on fourth-and-one at its own 41 and got just enough yardage on a QB sneak. QB Tyler Thigpen would also convert three third-down plays on the drive. He found TE Tony Gonzalez open at the goal line for a 13-yard TD to give the Chiefs a 17-7 lead. It would be Kansas City s final points of the afternoon. Denver answered back with a long drive of its own, going 80 yards on 14 plays and using 6:57 of the second quarter. The Broncos picked up four first downs in the possession with the big play coming on a 21-yard throw from Cutler to WR Brandon Marshall on third down. The TD came from that same connection, on a third-and-goal play at the Chiefs 12-yard line, as Marshall got to back the corner of the end zone to slice the Chiefs lead to at intermission. Denver got the initial possession of the second half and put together another long drive, going 66 yards on 12 plays and using 6:43 off the clock. Cutler moved the sticks five times, setting up a first-and-10 at the Kansas City 17-yard line. But the Chiefs defense stiffened, giving up just two yards on three plays to force a 33-yard K Matt Prater FG that tied the score at After a Chiefs punt the Broncos again drove into Chiefs territory, but could not convert the trip into points as Prater s 48-yard FG went wide right. Late in the third quarter, the Broncos started a drive at their five-yard line after a 56-yard punt by P Dustin Colquitt. Cutler took his team 95 yards on 12 plays, holding the ball for over six minutes. Marshall capped off the drive with a six-yard TD on screen pass to the right side that gave Denver its first lead of the game at The Chiefs offense came right back with a drive deep into Denver territory, but faced fourth-and-goal from the five-yard line. Thigpen dropped back to pass, felt pressure on his outside and took off running up the middle. He was stopped inside the one-yard line and Denver took over on downs. The Broncos were then able to convert a pair of third downs to keep the ball and kill the clock, preserving the victory. GAME NOTES CB Maurice Leggett scored a TD for the second consecutive week, registering a 27-yard INT return. It was Kansas City s first defensive TD against the Broncos since DE Vaughn Booker had a 14-yard fumble return vs. Denver (12/17/95). KC Barth, 26-yard field goal (6-43, 3:39). 12 THE LAST GAME Chargers 43, Chiefs 14 November 29, 2009 Qualcomm Stadium 65,280 KANSAS CITY SAN DIEGO The Chargers broke open a game tied at 7-7 in the second quarter with 28 unanswered points en route to a win at Qualcomm Stadium. After allowing just 23 points off turnovers in the club s first 10 games, Kansas City permitted 28 points off four giveaways against San Diego. Kansas City committed its first turnover of the game on its second possession when QB Matt Cassel was picked off by CB Quentin Jammer, giving San Diego the ball at its 39-yard line. San Diego wasted little time in capitalizing as TE Antonio Gates hauled in a 19-yard TD from QB Philip Rivers to take a 7-0 lead. Both clubs exchanged punts before the Chiefs orchestrated an eight-play, 91-yard TD drive. A 31-yard run by RB Jamaal Charles and a facemask penalty moved Kansas City to the Chargers 13-yard line. Former Chargers WR Chris Chambers also caught passes of 14 and 10 yards on the scoring march, as well as a seven-yard TD pass to tie the game at 7-7 with 10:46 left in the second quarter. Things would rapidly go downhill from there for Kansas City. Rivers would connect with WR Malcom Floyd for 53 yards setting up a one-yard TD run from RB LaDainian Tomlinson. San Diego then capitalized on a Charles fumble when Rivers connected with Gates for his second TD catch from 15 yards out, giving San Diego a 21-7 lead. Charles returned the ensuing kickoff 49 yards to the San Diego 45-yard line, but on the first play from scrimmage, Cassel lost grip on the ball and Chargers S Paul Oliver scooped up the fumble in midair. Oliver returned the ball for a 40-yard TD, making the count 28-7 with 2:32 left before the half. On the Chiefs opening possession of the second half, C Rudy Niswanger s shotgun snap went over the head of Cassel and was recovered by San Diego LB Larry English at the Kansas City 10-yard line. Two plays later, Tomlinson registered a three-yard TD to push the San Diego advantage to But the Chiefs showed signs of spark on their next possession. Cassel hit Charles on a 49-yard pass to give the Chiefs offense new life. Charles capped an eight-play, 79-yard drive with a four-yard TD run, making the score with 9:45 left in the third quarter. K Nate Kaeding then nailed a 55-yard FG to extend the Chargers lead to After the Chiefs turned the ball over on downs, the Chargers drove the ball deep into Chiefs territory. Tomlinson was headed for paydirt before CB Brandon Flowers jarred the ball free just shy of the goal line. Flowers jumped on the loose ball at the four-yard line to thwart the scoring threat. But Cassel was called for intentional grounding in the end zone three plays later. The resulting safety made the count Following the free kick, San Diego marched 60 yards, chewing 7:37 off the clock as Kaeding hit a 23- yard FG to make the final score GAME NOTES P Dustin Colquitt landed his 30th punt of the season inside the 20-yard line in the first quarter, breaking the franchise single-season record of 29 established by P Louie Aguiar in 95.
