Pitt trailed for the majority of the game but battled back to within deficits of two and three points in the final minute. Pitt had several chances to cut the margin in the final two minutes, but missed free throws and missed shots helped the Cardinals hold on. Louisville converted 10 of its 11 free throws in the second half alone and Pitt shot a Jamie Dixon Era low 25.0 percent (3-12) from the line. Tray Woodall led the Panthers with 14 points and four 3- pointers, Lamar Patterson added 10 points and Talib Zanna contributed 10 rebounds. Seton Hall enters Monday night s game with a 13-9 overall record and 2-7 Big East slate. PITT-SYRACUSE POST-GAME NOTES Pitt improved to 12-2 at the Petersen Events Center this year. The Panthers moved to (.892) all-time at the Petersen Events Center and is (.800) against Big East opponents. Today s contest was the 198th played at the Petersen Events Center. Today s meeting with Syracuse was the 101st in the series. Head Coach Jamie Dixon improved to 10-3 versus the Orange as the Panthers have captured eight of the past 11 meetings in the series. SU leads the all-time series Pitt improved to 6-1 all-time vs. Syracuse at the Petersen Events Center. With the win, Pitt improved to 13-1 all-time vs. top-10 ranked opponents at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt held Syracuse to 55 points, matching the Orange fewest points this season (55-44 win at USF on Jan. 6). The 120 combined points in the contest were the fewest in the series since Feb. 29, 2004 a overtime win by Syracuse at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt has lost just three non-conference games to the likes of Bucknell, Long Beach State and Wagner. Pitt won its first 34 consecutive games in the Petersen Events Center. The 34-game win streak to open the arena ranks third alltime among winning streaks to open new arenas (51-UCLA in 1964, 41-Providence in and 34-Pitt, ). Pitt has won 77 of its last 94 Big East league home games and is against Big East opponents in the Petersen Events Center. Pitt recently won a school record 58 consecutive home games against non-conference opponents at the Petersen Events Center. Its 58-game win streak spanning from Jan. 2, 2005-Nov. 16, 2011 surpassed the previous record of 28 consecutive nonconference home wins at the Petersen Events Center recorded from Nov. 23, 2002-Jan. 2, Pitt owns a record vs. nonconference opponents in the Petersen Events Center. Wagner, Long Beach State and Bucknell are the only three nonconference teams to defeat the Panthers there. 16 PITT BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 16 PITT BASKETBALL PERSONALITY PROFILES STEVEN ADAMS First arrived in the United States in January 2012 while attending Notre Dame Academy (Mass.). Became nationally known following his performance at the adidas Nations Camp in April 2011 in Los Angeles, where he led the tournament in both scoring (22 points) and rebounding (16.8 rpg.). Consensus top-10 national recruit. Nicknamed the Kiwi Phenom. Competed for the Wellington Saints team and several New Zealand national teams. Half-sister is Valerie Kasanita Vili-Adams, the 2008 Olympic champion and back-to-back three-time World Champion in the shot put (New Zealand). Vili-Adams won the 2008 Beijing Olympic Gold Medal with a 21.07m throw. She also captured gold in London in 2012 in the same event. Father Sid Adams is of English descent, while his mother is Tongan. Head Coach Jamie Dixon heard of Adams through Kenny McFadden, the New Zealand Development Officer for Basketball. McFadden, Dixon and Adams brother all played professional basketball together in New Zealand from Dixon was one of the best professional players to play in New Zealand. Wears size 19 shoes. Plays the guitar. Has tried to teach some of his teammates to play. Following his father s death at age 13, Adams took to the streets in Rotorua. His older brother Warren rescued him as a 14-year old. One of 18 siblings. Six of his brothers played basketball for New Zealand. All of his brothers stand around 6-10 or 6-11 in height and his sisters are 6-5 or 6-6 tall. Becomes the third 7-footer to play for Pitt along with Lucius Keese ( ) and Aaron Gray ( ). Has already played one game in the Pittsburgh area. Notre Dame played Massanutten Academy (Va.) at nearby Ambridge H.S. on January 29, Wears No. 13 because it s his lucky number and his brothers wore it as well. Has a tattoo of his middle name Funaki on his forearm. His middle name is much longer though. You have to ask him to pronounce it for you. DURAND JOHNSON Redshirted his first year at Pitt ( ). Fourth Baltimore native to play at Pitt in the last three years following Jermaine Dixon, Chase Adams and Aron Nwankwo. Nickname is Pee-wee. CHRIS JONES April signee who blossomed during his senior season at Teaneck H.S. Honor roll student in high school. Played AAU basketball in Pitt assistant coach Brandin Knight s former program, the New Jersey Playaz. Chose Pitt for its family atmosphere and great relationship with the coaching staff. MIKE LECAK Sophomore walk-on who was added to the roster in August Transferred to Pitt from Wheeling Jesuit University where he competed in basketball as a freshman. Lists his hometown as Pittsburgh, Pa., but attended high school in Phoenix, Ariz. Mother played basketball at Robert Morris. His father played basketball at Penn State- McKeesport. Has plans to coach someday. J.J. MOORE Won the Throwdown Showdown, Pitt s dunk contest at its preseason Blue-Gold Scrimmage. His final dunk came after he took off from the free throw line and sailed over three standing managers. Named a Hoopscoop High School All-America selection. Impressed at the Jordan Brand Classic All-Star Game at Madison Square Garden following his senior year of high school. Extremely athletic, owns a 37- inch vertical leap. Played at same prep school, South Kent Academy (Conn.) as former Pitt teammate Gilbert Brown. Nickname is Twin since teammates believe he resembles Brown. ARON NWANKWO Walk-on who is attending Pitt on a full academic scholarship graduate of Baltimore City H.S. with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Played in the Pitt JamFest AAU tournament at the Petersen Events Center on April 24, Head Coach Jamie Dixon offered him a walk-on spot following the event. Follows in the footsteps of two other Pitt players from Baltimore: Jermaine Dixon and Chase Adams. Chose Pitt for its pre-med program with the opportunity to play on its top college basketball program. Said it was a dream come true and that he would gain the best of both worlds while receiving an academic scholarship offer to Pitt and then having an opportunity to play on the basketball team. Also played lacrosse in high school, where he led City H.S. to three straight city titles. LAMAR PATTERSON Played his senior year of high school at St. Benedict s Prep in New Jersey for coach Danny Hurley, who is now the head coach at Rhode Island. Helped guide St. Benedict s to a No. 7 final national ranking and berth in the first-ever ESPN Rise National High School Tournament. Younger brother of Perry Patterson, who played quarterback at Syracuse from and was a Second Team All- State honoree at Lancaster McCaskey High School. The Patterson brothers are two of only four players in McCaskey history to earn All-State honors in basketball. Played his first three seasons at Lancaster McCaskey High School where he was an All- State selection. Older brother Lorne Creighton also starred in basketball at McCaskey and played collegiately at Kutztown University. Favorite all-time basketball player is Magic Johnson and had the opportunity to meet him when Pitt played in the CBE Classic in Kansas City in Committed to Pitt after the Panthers win over Duke at Madison Square Garden in December Nickname is LP. JAMES ROBINSON Concluded his high school career as the all-time winningest player in DeMatha Catholic history with 120 career wins. He lost only one home game in his fouryear high school career. Played with the USA Basketball Under-18 squad that captured the Gold Medal at the FIBA Americas Championships in Sao Sebastiao, Brazil, this past summer. Led the team in assist:turnover ratio (12:2) and averaged 4.4 points and 15.6 minutes per game. Played for the USA East Squad in the Nike Global Challenge, played in April in Portland, Ore. Described as a floor general, student of the game and consistent winner. Nicknamed Mr. Consistent by his high school coach. Pitt recruited him since the ninth grade. In July 2010, led his AAU team, Team Takeover to the Nike Peach Jam national title. Top-60 consensus national recruit. Earned a tryout for the Under- 18 USA Basketball Team in June 2012 in Colorado Springs, Colo. DANTE TAYLOR Became the fifth Pitt player in school history and the first in 22 years to earn McDonald s All- America team honors joining Charles Smith (1984), Jerome Lane (1985), Bobby Martin (1987) and Brian Shorter (1987). Also scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds in the McDonald s All-America game in Miami on April 1, Honored by his hometown of Greenburgh, N.Y. as being a native son during halftime of the Frankie Williams All-Star game in June Played high school basketball at National Christian Academy, the same school that produced Patrick Ewing Jr., Kevin Durant and Deron Washington. Family sent him to National Christian Academy hoping that he would turn his life around and improve his grades. When he arrived at NCA, he stood 6-feet-5 inches tall and weighed 230 pounds. Since then, he has grown four inches and maintained his weight. Developed and improved over his four years at NCA. With hard work, he claims he went from a raw, chubby kid to a McDonald s All-American. Good student who earned the team s Academic Achievement Award as a freshman. Also earned honor roll academic status two times as a high school senior. Invited to try out for the USA Basketball Under-19 Team during the summer of 2009 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Has several tattoos including one that says RIP Grandpa for his mother s father, who died before he was born. Another tattoo on his left arm has a basketball with a ribbon around it and the words Respect My Hustle. Others say Blessed Baller, and Fear None, Trust Few. Owns a dirtbike motorcycle and races it with his friends at home in New York. Roommate is Tray Woodall. TRAY WOODALL Played a starring role in the documentary reality movie The Street Stops Here, a movie about Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley and the famed St. Anthony basketball program. The two-hour documentary aired nationally on PBS in early April As a senior, led St. Anthony High School to the nation s No. 1 ranking in St. Anthony s finished a perfect 32-0 and was named national champions by USA Today in Introduced to basketball by his cousin Khalief Woodall (age 16), who was tragically killed when Tray was 11 years old. Has known former Pitt players Ashton Gibbs and Nasir Robinson since the seventh grade. He previously played on an AAU team with Gibbs. Best friends on other college teams include Jiovanni Fontan (Fordham/Southern California), Mike Rosario (Florida/Rutgers), Tyshawn Taylor (Kansas), Alberto Estwick (Fordham/ Norfolk State) and A.J. Rogers (Saint Joseph s). All six played at St. Anthony. He calls all six his brothers. Originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., but resides in Paterson, N.J. Collects shoes. Roommate is Dante Taylor. CAMERON WRIGHT Father passed away prior to Pitt s season opener against Mount St. Mary s. His father died of brain cancer, but Wright played in the season opener anyway, saying that his father would have wanted it that way. He also put the letters FMF For My Father on his shoes. High school honor student who earned a 3.7-plus grade point average. Committed to Pitt on Sunday, August 9, 2009 after visiting the campus, saying it was an unbelievable visit and that he found his home. He was impressed with Pitt s facilities, but most impressed with the people and coaching staff. His best friend, high school teammate and backcourt partner Derek Jackson plays basketball at Central Michigan. Invited to tryout for the USA Basketball Under-19 team in Colorado Springs during the summer of TALIB ZANNA Originally from Kaduna, Nigeria. Moved to the United States in His father, a successful businessman in Nigeria, passed away not long after he committed to Pitt. He has a picture of his father in his locker and touches it before he hits the court each day. Early in his childhood, he played soccer. Following a growth spurt and at the urging of his brother, he switched to basketball. Began playing basketball at age 10. Early-on, he had a goal of traveling to the United States to play basketball. Discovered by American high school coaches at a big man camp in Lagos, Nigeria, which was organized by his friend, mentor and former Georgetown player Godwin Owinje. Ran up and down mountains in Nigeria to help increase his strength and speed. Devout Muslim who can speak four different languages. He could speak English before arriving in the United States. Played high school basketball at Bishop McNamara High School (Md.). His father, who never saw him play competitively, serves as his role model and inspiration. After he broke his ankle during his first year in the U.S., his father told him to keep working toward his goals. He plays the game thinking of his father and keeps a necklace in his locker in memory of him. Has five siblings. His dream is for them to see him play someday in the United States. TREY ZEIGLER Transferred to Pitt after two seasons at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich. In late May, he was ruled eligible to compete immediately at Pitt by the NCAA. His father, Ernie Zeigler, served as his head coach at Central Michigan from Ernie also served as an assistant at Pitt from Family spent two years living in the North Allegheny School District while his father coached at Pitt. As a youngster, Trey watched the Panthers earn back-to-back NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances and win back-to-back Big East regular season titles, along with the 2003 Big East Tournament championship. Brandin Knight was one of his childhood idols. Highest-rated recruit in Mid- American Conference history when he signed with the Chippewas. Became the first player in Central Michigan history to reach the 1,000 point career mark during a sophomore season. He concluded his career at CMU with 1,011 points (16.0 average). Became the first freshman in MAC history to earn preseason First Team All-MAC honors. Runner-up for the Michigan Mr. Basketball Award as a senior.
