3 Page 3 Purpose 2. To promote basketball at the youth level in Thief River Falls 3. To provide financial and volunteer assistance to the TRF basketball program 4. To be visible throughout the community via radio, newspaper, online, and other media outlets. Goals 1. To provide opportunity for children to learn basketball skills and fundamentals in a practice setting and to demonstrate these skills and fundamentals in a game situation. 2. To promote discussion and demonstration of sportsmanship at practices and games. Beliefs 1. Practice and games need to be organized and structured so that players can experience as much fun and success as possible. 2. All players deserve playing time when they follow the rules and procedures of practice and games. 3. All coaches, volunteers, and parents should teach a positive, hard-working attitude by: listening, supporting, role-modeling and guiding players toward specific outcomes. These outcomes must be made clear to all people involved so that everyone has the same expectations. Practice Policy 1. Practices are closed to anyone other than coaches. History has shown it can be distracting for coaches and players when others are in the gym. Late drop-off and early pickup of players is an exception. 2. All coaches and volunteers helping during practices or games need to be cleared by our board. Please direct any questions to the board president. 3. Players practicing at Challenger are not to leave the gymnasium area.

4 Page 4 Discipline Policy 1. Players are expected to abide by all rules, regulations, and policies. Players shall respect other players, coaches and referees. 2. Player s families shall respect players, coaches, referees, other fans, and act in a courteous manner. 3. Should a player violate any provisions of this policy, the player shall be subject to the following discipline: a. First Offense: A verbal warning b. Second Offense: A one week suspension c. Third Offense: A two week suspension d. Fourth Offense: Suspension for remainder of season 4. Should a member of a player s family violate any provisions of this policy, that person shall be subject to the following discipline: a. First Offense: No attendance at games for two weeks. b. Second Offense: No attendance at games for the the season. 5. Discipline steps may be advanced based on the severity of the violation and based upon history of violations from the previous years. 6. No hazing is allowed.period! 7. Coaches, directors, and officers shall have the authority to determine if an offense has occurred and shall determine the discipline to be issued. a. Anyone receiving discipline shall have the right to appeal the disciplinary action to the board officers and directors. b. An appeal must be in writing and delivered to the player s coach within three days of the discipline being issued. c. Discipline shall be stayed until the board decides the appeal. d. The board s decision shall be final. e. Other policies and procedures shall remain effective, including coaches individual disciplines.

5 Page 5 Playing Time, Attendance and Absences 1. Players will have playing time as nearly equal as possible. a. A coach may reduce playing time for a player with an unexcused absence. b. A coach may reduce playing time for a player for disciplinary reasons. 2. If a player needs to miss practice for any reason, a coach needs to be notified beforehand. 3. No player will be penalized from game playing time when a parent gives the coach an excused absence. 4. If a coach needs to reduce playing time for a player due to disciplinary action or an unexcused absence from practice, the coach should notify the player. Shoes and Clothing 1. T-shirt cost is included in the registration fee and will be handed out at practice when ready. 2. Shorts should be worn with the t-shirt. 3. Players should come dressed with warm clothes over their uniform. 4. Players should not wear their game tennis shoes to the gym. Pictures 1. Will be taken in December during regular scheduled practice times. 2. 1st grade pictures will be delivered to each student s teacher 3. All other pictures will be handed out at practice by coaches.

6 Page 6 Game Rules 1. Games will consist of two 20 minute halves 2. The clock will stop the last two minutes of each half. 3. Halftime will be five minutes. 4. Each coach has 1 time out per half. 5. Overtime is one minute. 6. If still tied after, play goes to sudden death. 7. Players will attempt free throws from the regular free throw line for 4th through 8th grades. A shorter line will be used for younger players. 8. Lane violation will be five seconds for 5/6 teams. 7 seconds for 3/4th grade. 9. Man-to-man defense will be played exclusively. 10. Players may press only the last 2 minutes of the game in 5th and 6th grade. 11. Substitute players should report to the scorer, give their own number, and wait for an official to wave them in. 12. Baskets will be set at ten feet. (3 rd & 4 th grade may use lower baskets if available.) 13. An official score book may be kept at each game. 14. No profanity will be tolerated. 15. If for any reason school needs to be cancelled, basketball practice will be cancelled. If weather is bad on Saturday, listen to the radio for cancellation announcements. Open Gym 1. Scheduled from 1-3 pm at Challenger Elementary st through 12th grade players are invited. 3. Please pick your children up immediately at 3 pm. 4. All the same conduct rules apply so please be respectful of the school s facility and the open gym supervisor s time 5. November 12 th, 19 th 6. December 3 rd, 10 th, 17 th 7. 8 Page 8 Concession Requirements 1. The Backcourt club is a volunteer organization depends on parents for help. 2. 3rd and 4th grade families are required to work one shift. 3. 5th and 6th grade families are required to work two shifts. 4. There may be a $50 fee if your shift is not covered. 5. If you do not sign up during this time you will be assigned a shift. 6. Sign up via the website at 7. If you do not have internet access you can call Heather Waldal at (218) to choose your time slot(s). 8. Thanks in advance for your willingness to help. Prowler of the Night 4 th Grade 1. Each 4th grade participant will be recognized at a home varsity basketball game as a Prowler of the Night. 2. They will receive a t-shirt and participate with the varsity in the starting line-up. 3. Players and coaches will get in for free. (Parents will pay) 4. They will meet their Backcourt Club coach in the bleachers behind the home bench (southwest corner) to receive your shirt, participate with the team, and sit there with your team during the game. 5. Your coach will notify you of dates and times for your child to participate. 6. Dates for girls: December 1 st, 21 st, and January 12 th 7. Dates for boys: December 8 th, January 9 th and 25 th Prowler Varsity Game Night 5 th and 6 th Grade 1. Each team will have the opportunity to play during the half times of a home junior varsity and varsity game (play twice in one evening). 2. Players wear their team shirt and basketball gear. 3. Players and coach will get in for free. (Parents will pay) 4. Games must start promptly when the high school teams go into the locker rooms. 5. Players & coaches meet in the upper bleachers on the south side and sit with your team during the games, before and after you play. 6.
