THE MATCH-UP Kansas City and Denver will meet for the first time this season in an important AFC West contest for both squads as the Chiefs host the Broncos. The Chiefs remain in a first-place tie with San Diego atop the AFC West standings with a 4-4 record, but defeated the Chargers earlier this year by a margin at San Diego (9/30). The Chiefs have won 10 of their last 12 meetings with Denver at Arrowhead and will be seeking to register their fifth consecutive home victory over their division rivals. The Chiefs have rebounded from an 0-2 start to register victories in four of their last six contests. Kansas City is coming off a wild home loss vs. Green Bay (11/4). Since the start of the 90 campaign, the Chiefs are 26-9 (.743) in their next game at Arrowhead following a home loss. Kansas City hasn t lost back-to-back games at Arrowhead since After starting the season 2-0, Denver has lost five of its last six contests after suffering a 44-7 setback at Detroit (11/4). Kansas City s defense has been one of the primary reasons that the Chiefs are atop the AFC West standings. The Chiefs defense has allowed opposing offenses to score just 15.6 points per game, a mark that ranks fifth in the league. In terms of total points allowed, KC ranks ninth in the league, giving up 18.3 ppg. Meanwhile, Denver is 28th in that category, allowing 28.4 ppg. The Chiefs have held seven of their eight opponents to 20 points or less this season. Denver has been held to 20 points or less in each of its five losses. KC has permitted 14.0 ppg in its four wins and has allowed 22.5 ppg in its four setbacks. The Broncos have scored 23.0 ppg in their three wins, but have managed just 11.4 ppg in their five losses. Offensively, QB Damon Huard owns a 5-2 record as a starter at Arrowhead. His two favorite targets this season have been TE Tony Gonzalez and rookie WR Dwayne Bowe. Gonzalez has 52 receptions and is on pace to break his team single-season record of 102 catches in Bowe has 29 receptions for 499 yards and is on schedule to establish new Chiefs rookie standards in both areas. Two-time Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson suffered a foot sprain vs. Green Bay (11/4). If he is unable to play on Sunday, three-time Pro Bowl RB Priest Holmes could make his initial start in 742 days. Holmes last start came at San Diego (10/30/05). Shanahan s (.630) regular season mark and 8-5 (.615) postseason record both rank as the top winning percentages in Denver history. REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the 60s and actually coined the term Super Bowl. As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact that league has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt s humble styles, the letters LH are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC s jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player. GONZALEZ OWNS NFL TD RECORD FOR TIGHT ENDS Eight-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns 65 career TD catches, the most by a tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez ranks second in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (773) and receiving yardage (9,325), trailing only Shannon Sharpe (815-10,060). Gonzalez owns 21 career 100-yard receiving games, including a 10-catch, 109-yard, one-td performance last week vs. Green Bay (11/4). Those yard games are the most in KC history and are third in NFL annals by a TE, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24), and Jackie Smith (22). Gonzalez has a reception in 107 consecutive contests, meaning only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE. Gonzalez s catch currently ranks sixth among active NFL players. Gonzalez is on pace to finish the year with 104 receptions, which would break the franchise single-season record of 102 he set in He is also on pace to finish the year with 1,230 receiving yards, which would mark the second-highest seasonal tally of his career. He had 1,258 yards in In 20 career games (18 starts) against the Broncos, Gonzalez has 76 receptions for 891 yards (11.7 avg.) with four TDs and a pair of 100-yard games. KC has already registered division road wins at San Diego and at Oakland this season and will be seeking to win its first three division contests of the year since winning five straight to begin the 2003 campaign. KC is 6-2 against division opponents under Herm Edwards, while Denver is 1-4 in its last five AFC West contests. 7 LAST GAME Packers 33, Chiefs 22 November 11, 2007 Arrowhead Stadium 78,988 GREEN BAY KANSAS CITY What began as a defensive slugfest between the Chiefs and Packers turned into a fourth-quarter shootout at Arrowhead. Trailing 13-7 after three quarters, the Chiefs didn t have enough answers to match Packers QB Brett Favre as both teams combined for 35 fourth-quarter points with Green Bay winning a wild decision. Favre checked the final team off of his win list joining QBs Tom Brady and Peyton Manning as the only other signal callers to defeat all 31 other NFL franchises by throwing for 360 yards and two TDs on the afternoon. Green Bay mounted a 6-0 lead thanks to a pair of K Mason Crosby field goals in the second quarter. CB Benny Sapp made the Chiefs first big play intercepting Favre and returning it to the Green Bay 30-yard line just before halftime. A defensive pass interference penalty in the end zone set up a one-yard TD dive from RB Larry Johnson. Despite being outgained 181 to 62 in total yards, the Chiefs held an improbable 7-6 lead at halftime. Green Bay LB A.J. Hawk intercepted a Damon Huard third-quarter pass setting up a 13-yard TD pass from Favre to WR Greg Jennings for a 13-7 Packers lead. Green Bay s TD sparked the Chiefs offense as KC answered with its first prolonged drive. Huard first completed passes of 17 and nine yards to TE Tony Gonzalez. Then Huard slipped a screen pass out to Johnson who was wide open in the left flat. Thirty yards later Johnson was still running, turning the short pass into a TD as the Chiefs took a lead. Not to be outdown, Favre hit WR Donald Driver on an incredible 44-yard pass on the very next play, moving the Packers down to the KC 16-yard line. The Chiefs relinquished just a 32-yard Crosby field goal as the Packers regained a lead with just under nine minutes to go. The Chiefs would bounce right back with a six-play, 82-yard scoring march. Johnson got the drive jump-started with 19 yards on the first two plays, but suffered a right foot injury on the second play forcing him to the leave the game. A 25-yard defensive pass interference call on CB Charles Woodson would move Kansas City to the GB 17-yard line. From there Huard whizzed a TD pass to Gonzalez, giving the Chiefs a lead. RB Priest Holmes would convert the two-point conversion on a dive over the pile to push the lead to with 5:18 remaining. That was too much time for Favre. Three straight short completions gave way to a 60-yard touchdown bomb to Jennings, who ran untouched through the Chiefs secondary. The throw was particularly impressive considering Favre delivered the ball off of his back foot and hit the receiver in stride. The sixth lead change of the game gave the Packers a advantage that they would never relinquish. Kansas City appeared to be firing right back when Huard hit WR Jeff Webb down the sideline for a 36- yard gain. However a Packers challenge overturned the completion, ruling that Webb s second foot come down out of bounds. The Chiefs would be forced to punt and gave up another field goal on the ensuing possession. Trailing by four with 1:40 remaining, the stage was set for a comeback drive by Kansas City, but it was not to be. On the third play, Huard was picked off by Woodson near midfield and the interception was returned for the gameclinching touchdown, sealing the Packers win.
