A/S SA/S D/S B/S Mississippi State LSU LSU-MISSISSIPPI STATE SERIES RECORD: LSU leads, 44-7 LAST TIME OUT LSU dropped two matches last weekend, losing in four sets to Kentucky before falling in three sets to Tennessee on Sunday. Against Kentucky, Brittnee Cooper and Michele Williams both pounded out 13 kills, while the freshman Williams led the team with a.417 hitting percentage. Senior Kyna Washington continued her assault on the LSU record books by moving into sixth place in the all-time career kills list by finishing with eight against the Wildcats. Washington passed Lisa Smith as she now has 1,382 in her career. In addition, Washington tied former Tiger Luciana Reis for 10th on the all-time service aces list as Washington had two aces against Kentucky to push her total up to 143. Elena Martinez finished with 20 digs against Kentucky and followed that by recording 21 against Tennessee, which marked the sixth-straight match Martinez has posted 20 or more digs. In addition, Martinez moved into fifth place in LSU's all-time career digs list with her performances against Tennessee. Martinez has accumulated 1,263 digs in her career, two more than Wendy Stammer had from Offensively against the Lady Vols, Cooper led the team with 10 kills and a.421 hitting percentage. Despite the losses, which dropped LSU's record to 12-9 overall and an even 7-7 in SEC play, the Tigers maintained a half-match lead in the SEC West standings heading into this weekend's match-ups at home against Alabama and Mississippi State. LSU VS. WEEKEND OPPONENTS This will be the second time this season LSU is seeing both of this weekend s opponents. The Tigers beat the Crimson Tide earlier this year in five sets, 25-22, 23-25, 25-13, 20-25, LSU leads the overall series with Alabama, 25-21, and will be going for the sweep against the Tide for the second straight season as the Tigers won twice in 2007, both five-game affairs. The Tigers defeated Mississippi State, 3-1, in their first meeting of the year in Starkville by scores of 25-18, 20-25, 26-24, LSU leads the all-time series with the Bulldogs, 44-7, and LSU swept Mississippi State twice in 2007, winning both matches in three games. TIGERS IN NCAA RANKINGS Both BRITTNEE COOPER and ELENA MARTINEZ have made their way into the NCAA s top 50 rankings for different categories. Cooper s 1.27 blocks per set average, which is first in the SEC, is 25th in the NCAA. Elena Martinez s 4.68 digs per set average -- second in the SEC -- ranks 45th in the NCAA. LSU also has broken in as a team with its 2.44 blocks per set average ranking 46th in the NCAA. WE RE GOING TO FIVE... LSU has continued its trend of playing five-set matches early in the season, with both of the first two wins

5 coming in 3-2 decisions. The Tigers played another five-setter against Alabama, coming out on the winning end again. In fact the Tigers played three straight five-set matches, winning over Alabama and South Carolina with a Florida loss sandwiched in the middle. Last year, LSU played an astounding 12 five-game matches in 31 outings, meaning the Tigers played 14 five-set matches out of 36 at one point. They have won 10 of those while only dropping four. In 2007, the Tigers went 8-4 in five-framers, with three of the four losses coming on the road in SEC play as a string of four-straight losses on the road in the SEC in October. Twice last season, LSU went to five in both meetings with a team. The Tigers defeated Alabama twice in five games, including the first win in the CAVE for LSU since 2001, while splitting a pair of five-game matches with Kentucky, with each team winning the home contest. WASHINGTON UP IN RECORD BOOK Senior outside hitter KYNA WASHINGTON leads the team in kills with 229 and kills per set with She recorded six kills against Georgia, which pushed her past the 1,300-kill mark for her career and helped her surpass Julie Stempel for ninth place all-time. She has since moved up to sixth place with an eye for the top five. With 26 service aces in 78 sets, her 0.33 average per set ranks ninth in the SEC this year. She is tied with Luciana Reis for 10th place all-time in career service aces in LSU history. LSU VS. They also fell to No. 2 Nebraska, 3-0, in the Ameritas Players Challenge. They have lost to ranked Florida twice this year, first to No. 11 Florida on Sept. 21, 3-1, then to No. 8 Florida on Oct. 24, 3-2. The Tigers did defeat Texas A&M, however, which was not in the Top 25 but was the 34th team receiving votes. They also defeated St. John s, then receiving votes in the poll at No. 32. LSU lost both matches it played last season against nationally ranked teams, falling in four games to then No. 6 Florida at home, 3-1, and was swept by No. 10 Florida in Gainesville. The Tigers lost to No. 21 Kentucky, 3-1, in Lexington on Oct. 31. TIGERS DIG FOR THE CURE LSU began its part in the Dig For the Cure versus Ole Miss and Arkansas and concluded the month-long campaign against Florida on Oct. 24. This is a nationwide campaign that benefits Komen for the Cure in its efforts to raise awareness for the breast cancer disease FLORY GETS NO. 300 By defeating Mississippi State 3-1 on Oct. 17, LSU head coach FRAN FLORY recorded career victory No In her 11th year as head coach at LSU, Flory owns a record with the Purple & Gold. Her overall record in her 17th year as a head coach is Flory also is a three-time Louisiana Coach of the Year (2001, 2005, 2006) and has guided the Tigers to back-to-back-to back SEC West titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for three straight years. She has the second most wins of any active SEC head coach, behind only Mary Wise of Florida. TIGER HONORED BY SEC Following her performance in the Bluejay Invitational that included a 31-dig output against Texas A&M, ELENA MARTINEZ was honored as the SEC s Defensive Player of the Week. She was honored again after a stellar weekend against Ole Miss and Arkansas, amassing 36 digs in just six sets, an average of 6.00 per frame. The senior recorded a pair of 18-dig performances against division rivals Ole Miss and Arkansas and spearheaded the defensive effort that held the Rebels to a negative hitting clip at In addition to her 18 digs against Arkansas, Martinez fell just one assist shy of a double-double as she dished out a career-best nine assists against the Razorbacks. Martinez was rewarded again after collecting 48 digs an average of 5.33 per set in leading the Tigers to two key division wins over Mississippi State and Alabama. That improved her season average to 4.52 per frame, the best average of any defender in the league. That was the third time she has been recognized by the league in 2008 and the fifth time overall for a weekly honor. Martinez also is the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year. DEGIROLAMO OUT FOR SEASON WITH ACL, MCL TEARS Despite sweeping Ole Miss on Oct. 3, the Tigers suffered a huge blow late in the second set when All- American and All-SEC junior middle blocker LAUREN DEGIROLAMO went down with a knee injury. MRIs on Saturday showed she had torn both her ACL and MCL and she will be out for the remainder of the season. This is the second player the Tigers have lost for the year, as Marina Skender also tore her ACL and is out for the 2008 season. Prior to her injury, DeGirolamo moved into eighth place all-time in LSU history for career blocks. Currently with 419, the junior middle blocker will need just 13 to overtake seventh place when she returns from her injury. TRIPLE-THREAT SETTERS In her first match at LSU, transfer setter SAM DABBS recorded a triple-double with 48 assists, 10 kills and 14 digs. It was the first triple-double for any Tiger since Regan Hood on Oct. 31, She was also just two kills shy of posting another against McNeese State only four matches later. Sophomore BRITTNEY JOHNSON

6 LSU IN THE PMAC OVERALL RECORD: (.711) 2008 RECORD: 4-2 (.667) LONGEST WINNING STREAK: 37 matches (Oct. 2, Nov. 20, 1987) CURRENT WINNING STREAK: One Match YEAR-BY-YEAR IN THE PMAC YEAR MATCHES OVERALL PCT TOTAL LSU MILESTONE VICTORIES 100TH: vs. Northwestern State (1977) 200TH: vs. Saskatchewan, 3-1 (1981) 300TH: vs. Clemson, 3-0 (Sept. 7, 1985) 400TH: vs. Northeast La., 3-0 (Oct. 1, 1988) 500TH: vs. Alabama, 3-0 (Nov. 8, 1991) 600TH: vs. Southeastern La., 3-0 (Aug. 30, 1997) 700TH: vs. Central Florida, 3-0 (Sept. 5, 2004) 800TH:??? (currently at 798 victories) almost got into the action herself against Auburn. Johnson dished out 12 assists to go along with 11 digs and eight kills, just two shy of a triple-double herself. That was in addition to four blocks and a career-best.615 hitting clip. She also was just three assists shy of triple-double against Mississippi State that went along with 12 kills, 11 digs and a.579 clip. HOT HITTING As a team the Tigers hit at a.410 clip against Arkansas on Oct. 5. Not only was that a season high for LSU, but it is also the highest team hitting percentage in a single match since they hit.417 against Central Florida on Sept. 3, LSU hit.514 in set one alone and four Tigers had at least six kills and a.400 individual clip. Tania Schatow led the way with 13 kills on 21 attempts and a.524 mark. SLOW STARTS The Tigers had trouble seizing early momentum in matches in the early seaon, losing set one in nine of their first 11 matches this season. Four of those times the Tigers were able to come back from the deficit and win, including against Creighton after falling behind 2-0. But five times the first-set loss was too much to overcome. The Tigers made a turnaround a few weeks back, as LSU dominated the first set, 25-15, over Ole Miss and won it over Arkansas. Since then the Tigers have lost just two first sets -- against Georgia in a loss and South Carolina in a win. DOUBLE-FIGURE DIGGING With a pair of 18-dig performances against Ole Miss and Arkansas, senior ELENA MARTINEZ recorded double-figure digs in 46 consecutive matches dating back to the 2007 opener. She extended it to 47 before seeing the streak snapped against Auburn. Former Tiger libero Kassi Mikulik holds the LSU record with 49 straight double-figure dig matches since the libero era, so Martinez finished just short of that mark. FINALLY AT HOME, NEW PMAC CONFIGURATION LSU s matches against Tennessee and Kentucky were the first the Tigers played in the friendly confines of the Maravich Center in 2008 after having their home tournament canceled because of Hurricane Gustav. There have been several changes put in place for volleyball matches in the PMAC this year. Seating for volleyball matches from now on will be limited to the lower bowl of the Maravich Center in the 100 sections only. Doors open an hour and a half before each match, and fans with general admission tickets should enter through the lower southeast, southwest and northwest entrances only instead of on the concourse level as in previous years. Credentialed personnel should enter through the lower northeast corridor. Ticket sales and will call will be in outside ticket windows at the southwest corridor as will the fan zone and merchandise tables. The ticket booth will remain open through the second set of all matches. Students and faculty using ID cards as well as those on the player pass list to enter volleyball matches are to use this southwest entrance. For families coming to experience LSU volleyball, the Kid Zone will be located on the floor level of the northwest corridor TIGERS PART OF NCAA ATTENDANCE HISTORY Although they were on the losing end of the match, the Tigers were part of NCAA attendance history in their match at No. 2 Nebraska. The 13,412 fans that were on hand in the Devaney Center were an NCAA regular-season volleyball record. SCHATOW SETS NEW HIGHS LSU Coach Fran Flory has said going into the 2008 campaign that sophomore TANIA SCHATOW has shown more improvement from one season to the next than possibly any other player she has ever coached. Schatow responded in the first five matches of the year by posting new career-highs in every major category. She currently is second on the team in blocks with 42 and had a career-best eight blocks in the season-opener against Texas A&M. She shattered her previous career-high for digs in a match of three against Ole Miss, collecting 15 against the Rebels in addition to her five blocks. She then followed that up against Arkansas by leading the team with a career-high 13 kills on 21 attempts - a career-best.524 hitting percentage as well. Her 11th kill against the Razorbacks was the 100th of her career. LSU IN THE CBS COLLEGE SPORTS/AVCA POLL The Tigers are no longer ranked or receiving votes in the poll. Despite winning both of their matches in the McNeese Invitational, the Tigers went from No. 24 in the polls to being unranked. They began the season at No. 21 and fell to 24th after a 2-1 weekend that included a loss to then-no. 16 Minnesota. They were receiving votes until starting 1-3 in the league. MARTINEZ GRABS CAREER DIG 1,000 With her 20th dig against Georgia on Nov. 16 of 2007, ELENA MARTINEZ broke the 21-year-old SEC singleseason digs record with her 656th. Martinez had previously broken the LSU single-season mark with her 536th against Kentucky on Nov. 2. She finished with 740 for the year, the first player in SEC history to record 700 digs in a season, topping the record of Shelly Gross of Georgia s mark of 655 and the LSU record of 535 set by Kassi

7 Mikulik in With her 11th dig against St. John s this year, Martinez recorded her 1,000th career dig, one of only eight LSU players to accomplish that feat in program history. GUSTAV CANCELS TIGER CLASSIC LSU was supposed to play host to the Mizuno Tiger Classic on Sept. 5-6 against Rice, Southeast Missouri State and Louisiana Tech. Hurricane Gustav had other plans. The Maravich Center was taken over days before the storm and still is being used as a special needs medical center. The Tigers instead made a late entry into the McNeese Invitational in Lake Charles, La., where they swept matches against in-state rivals Nicholls State and McNeese State. This is not the first time a hurricane has forced the LSU volleyball team to alter plans, as the Tigers were forced to play their first 17 matches on the road in 2005 in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. LSU was on the road 26 of 46 days during that stretch and traveled nearly 10,000 miles. TIGERS ARE 26-6 IN SEASON OPENERS LSU improved to 26-6 all-time in season openers with a 3-2 win over Texas A&M in the Bluejay Invitational in The Tigers have also won eight straight dating back to The last time the they have fallen in the season debut was in 2000, a 3-1 defeat to Santa Clara in the Colorado Powerbar Invitational in Boulder, Colo. TIGERS IN 08 TOURNEYS The Tigers played in three tournaments in 2008 before opening the SEC slate. The first was the Bluejay Invitational hosted by Creighton in Omaha, Neb. LSU went 2-1 on the weekend, winning five-setters over Texas A&M and Creighton and dropping a contest to then-no. 16 Minnesota. Elena Martinez and Brittnee Cooper were selected to the all-tournament team. The Tigers next took place in the McNeese Invitational, sweeping both matches against in-state rivals Nicholls State and McNeese State. No Tigers were eligible for the all-tournament team because of the late addition due to hurricane Gustav. Finally, LSU competed in the Ameritas Players Challenge hosted by Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. The Tigers went 1-1, first losing to No. 2 Nebraska but then rebounding to defeat St. John s. Elena Martinez and Kyna Washington were part of the all-tournament team for their efforts. TIGERS PICKED TO WIN WEST, LAND THREE ON PRESEASON ALL-SEC TEAM Thee Tigers were unanimously picked by the SEC Coaches to win the SEC West title for the fourth year in a row. All 10 coaches voted for LSU to sit atop the division, while the Tigers also received three votes to win the overall league title. Florida, who has won the SEC for 17 consecutive years, received all but one first-place vote in the East and had seven votes to the coaches prediction for overall league champion an 18th straight year. In addition to team predictions, LSU also had three student-athletes selcted as part of the preseason All-SEC team, more than any other school in the league. LAUREN DEGIROLAMO, ELENA MARTINEZ and KYNA WASHINGTON all received that honor. LSU SET TO DEFEND THREE STRAIGHT SEC WESTERN DIVISION TITLES LSU captured its third straight SEC Western Division title and second straight outright championship in The Tigers finished 15-5 in the conference, one game ahead of Ole Miss in the West and four games behind Florida overall. The Tigers claimed the outright SEC Western Division title in 2006 after sharing the championship with Arkansas in Since the SEC went to the divisional format in 1995, LSU had finished as high as second on three occasions, but never won before The last time LSU won an SEC title was when the Tigers won three straight overall championships from THE GOLD STANDARD In a promotion dubbed the Gold Game, the LSU volleyball team broke the single-match volleyball attendance record against South Carolina on Sept. 21 of last year. The Tiger faithful clad all in gold topped 2,300 as LSU shattered the previous record of an estimated 2,250 against Kentucky in With an attendance of 2,308, LSU marked its third 2,000-plus attendance in school history and the first since the 1992 record. Along with the 920 that attended the match against Florida the following Sunday, the 13th largest attendance in school history, and the two-day Mizuno Tiger Classic to start the year, the Tigers averaged 992 in attendance last year, the largest average attendance in Fran Flory s 10-year tenure. TIGERS RETURN FOUR ALL-SEC PERFORMERS LSU had four players named to the 2007 All-SEC teams, which was the second most of any school in the league (Florida led with six).elena MARTINEZ was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and was an All-SEC second-team selection.
