7 THE LAST TIME Colts 13, Chiefs 10 November 18, 2007 RCA Dome 57,294 KANSAS CITY INDIANAPOLIS The Chiefs 2006 season ended with a bitter taste after an AFC Wild Card Playoff loss at Indianapolis. This time the palette wasn t any sweeter as KC dropped a decision to the Colts. Despite an inspired defensive effort from the Chiefs, Indianapolis had just enough bullets to pull off the victory in QB Brodie Croyle s first NFL start. Kansas City limited the Colts to just 73 total yards in a first half that ended in a 3-3 tie. DE Jared Allen would bat down four of QB Peyton Manning s passes, with one leading to an INT. The Chiefs held the Indianapolis offense to a mere 216 yards, the lowest output by the Colts since The Chiefs dodged a pair of Colts bullets early on as K Adam Vinatieri misfired on a pair of firstquarter field goals. His 49-yard attempt sailed wide left on Indy's first drive, then after WR Eddie Kennison fumbled a punt return, Vinatieri hooked a 38-yard try to the left keeping the game scoreless after one quarter. Kansas City had its own kicking troubles on its first prolonged drive. After the Chiefs converted three first downs, K Dave Rayner missed a 43-yard field goal attempt wide left. However, on the very next play, Allen tipped Manning s pass at the line of scrimmage and S Jarrad Page intercepted it at the Colts 37-yard line. This time Rayner capitalized with a 47-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Indianapolis would get its second turnover deep inside Chiefs territory when Croyle was sacked and stripped by DE Robert Mathis, giving the Colts the ball at the KC 13-yard line. The Chiefs defense again stiffened, allowing only a 27-yard FG for a 3-3 tie. As well as the Chiefs defense was playing, everyone knew the Colts offense would rally at some point. That point came on their second possession of the third quarter as Manning and RB Joseph Addai led a nine-play, 64-yard TD drive. Manning completed all four of his pass attempts and Addai rattled off 35 yards on the ground, including a three-yard TD run up the middle for a 10-3 Indianapolis lead. KC would answer behind the arm of its new starting QB, rattling off an 11-play, 77-yard scoring drive late in the third quarter. Croyle completed passes of 12 and 18 yards to WR Dwayne Bowe and TE Tony Gonzalez to reach the Indianapolis 19-yard line. Croyle then floated a TD pass to Bowe in the deep corner of the end zone to tie the game at The Colts challenged that Bowe caught the ball in bounds, but the ruling on the field and the TD stood. Both clubs would exchange four punts before Manning and the Colts went back to work. Working from his own 33-yard line with 6:59 left, Manning hit four consecutive first-down passes before Addai was stopped short on third down at the Chiefs three-yard line. Instead of kicking a go-ahead FG, Indianapolis ran a QB sneak on fourth-and-one with Manning picking up just enough for a first down. With KC out of time outs, Indianapolis would kneel three times and watch Vinatieri chip in a 24-yard FG to take a lead with just three seconds left in the game. Kansas City had one last desperation play from their own 40-yard line, but a short pass and two subsequent laterals came up short as the Colts secured a win. KC Rayner, 47-yard field goal (4-8, 2:02). IND Vinatieri, 27-yard field goal (4-4, 1:22). IND Addai, 3-yard run (Vinatieri kick) (9-64, 4:53). KC Bowe, 19-yard pass Croyle (Rayner kick) (11-77, 5:55). IND Vinatieri 24-yard field goal (14-61, 6:56). 12 THE LAST GAME Chiefs 31, 49ers 10 September 26, 2010 Arrowhead Stadium 68,188 SAN FRANCISCO KANSAS CITY The Chiefs improved to 3-0 with a convincing victory over the 49ers. A combination of big plays, stellar defense and aggressive coaching decisions helped propel the club to victory. The Chiefs rushed for 207 yards, while Kansas City's defense allowed the 49ers only 43 rushing yards. After a scoreless first quarter, the second period of play was much more eventful. On fourth-and-one from the 50, Head Coach Todd Haley fooled the 49ers with a bit of gamesmanship as the punt team sprinted off the field and the offense sprinted on forcing the 49ers to take a timeout. Out of the Wildcat formation RB Dexter McCluster ran around the right side for the first down. The Chiefs drove to San Francisco s 34-yard line before CB Shawntae Spencer intercepted a Chiefs pass. The Chiefs defense got it right back as CB Brandon Flowers picked off his second pass of the season. Flowers interception set the Chiefs up in San Francisco territory at the 31-yard line. The first play following the INT QB Matt Cassel hit McCluster on a short pass to his left side who dashed 31 yards down the sideline and dove into the end zone for the TD giving the Chiefs a 7-0 lead with 11:02 to play in the half. On the ensuing kickoff the Chiefs recovered an unexpected onside kick, but an offsides penalty negated the play. The Chiefs kicked it away and the 49ers took over at their own 22. The 49ers moved into Chiefs territory following a 22-yard completion from QB Alex Smith to WR Michael Crabtree. Four plays later K Joe Nedney put through a 51-yard field goal making it 7-3. McCluster was again a key role in moving the ball as he caught a 15-yard pass from Cassel followed by a 23-yard catch and run putting KC at San Francisco s 23-yard line setting up Succop for a 38-yard attempt. Succop s kick sailed just right of the top of the post leaving the score at 7-3 at the two-minute warning. Following a 49ers punt, Cassel hit Charles on completions of 17 and 18 yards. With 0:07 on the clock Cassel hit TE Tony Moeaki setting up Succop for a 32-yard field goal attempt. Succop s kick split the uprights giving the Chiefs a 10-3 lead at intermission. The 49ers offense was first on the field after the break. The teams went punt for punt before Kansas City broke out an elaborate flea flicker. In the Wildcat formation, Jones took the snap, handed off to McCluster who pitched it to Cassel coming around the other side. Cassel slung the ball 45 yards down the field into the end zone to WR Dwayne Bowe increasing the Chiefs lead to 17-3 with 9:37 to play in the third quarter. On the ensuing possession, LB Tamba Hali sacked Smith on third-and-nine at San Francisco s 31-yard line, his third sack of the day forcing yet another 49ers punt. The Chiefs offense took the field at its own 39-yard line and behind the legs of Jones moved the ball into 49ers territory. On third-and-four from San Francisco s 45 Cassel hit Charles for a 22-yard gain to the 23. Four plays later Cassel fired a laser to Moeaki who made an impressive one-handed grab in the end zone to push the Chiefs lead to 24-3 with 1:41 left in the third quarter. Head Coach Todd Haley turned the ball over to his running backs in the fourth quarter as Jones and Charles combined for 57 yards on a drive that culminated with three-yard TD run from Jones. The Chiefs took a 31-3 lead with 3:27 left to play in the contest. The teams exchanged punts and San Francisco was able to add seven points when Smith connected with WR Josh Morgan as time expired making the final score GAME NOTES The Chiefs produced 5.0 sacks, the club's highest total since having 5.0 vs. Minnesota (9/23/07). KC McCluster, 31-yard pass from Cassel (Succop kick) (1-31, 0:10). SF Nedney, 51-yard field goal (8-45, 3:22). KC Succop, 32-yard field goal (7-44, 1:05).
