2 Jeremy, is a member of the Tar Heel men s soccer team, which played in the 2016 College Cup. The Tar Heels had reached the NCAA Elite 8 four years in a row, including in 2014 in Athens, Ga, but this season is the first time they ve advanced beyond that point. Carolina led the nation in All-America selections in 2016 with five players honored. Three of them Ronnie Schneider (singles), Jack Murray (doubles) and Robert Kelly (doubles) are still on the court for the Tar Heels. Seniors Chad Hoskins, Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider were among nearly 4,000 students to receive their undergraduate degrees from UNC at commencement exercises on Sunday (May 14) morning. Hoskins and Murray both earned doubles majors in economics and history, and Schneider majored in business administration through UNC s prestigious Kenan-Flagler Business School. The Mick patch on the Tar Heels shirts is in memory of young Mick Macholl (pronounced like McCall ), who had been adopted as an honorary member of the team. He lost his battle with cancer in December of 2016 at age 5. Record-Setting Season When UNC closed out the regular season with a 6-1 win at Louisville on April 23, it established a program record for conference wins in a season with 10. The Tar Heels had won nine ACC matches in six of the last 11 seasons, including 2016, but had never before hit double digits. The 2017 team also has set the program record for most wins in a season with 29. The previous mark of 28 was set by the 2016 team, which finished 28-5 overall and 9-3 in ACC play. Prior to that, the high was 27, established in Seniors Ronnie Schneider, Jack Murray and Chad Hoskins were members of all three of those record-setting teams. Super Seniors In their four years as starters, senior Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider have led UNC to a record of , twice reset the school records for season wins (see note above), and gone at least as far as the NCAA Elite 8 in each season. The two, who played against each other in their junior careers Murray grew up in Michigan and Schneider in Indiana, both graduated from UNC this month and plan to pursue professional careers. Ronnie and Jack have done so much for us, said UNC head coach Sam Paul. You go back and look at their careers most successful class we ve had. Tournament Tar Heels Carolina is making its 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance in 24 seasons under coach Sam Paul. The Tar Heels hosted first and second round NCAA action in Chapel Hill for the fourth year in a row, the fifth time in the past six years and the ninth time overall. Heading into the championship, UNC is all-time in NCAA Tournament play. The Tar Heels are 14-3 over the past four seasons, including the five wins this year. Stellar Start for Blumberg William Blumberg s collegiate career is off to an impressive start. The freshman enrolled at UNC in January and played at No. 1 singles in his very first college match, on Jan. 14 vs. Bucknell. He won 6-3, 6-1 and hasn t looked back. Since then, mostly playing at the No. 2 spot, he s 25-2 overall and has won 19 singles matches in a row. He went unbeaten in ACC play, finishing (He did not play in the season s final match, at Louisville.) He s 13-1 against ranked opponents, including a straight-sets win in the regular season over Wake Forest s Skander Mansouri, then #5. Blumberg was named ACC Freshman of the Year and the ITA s Carolina Region Rookie of the Year. His current singles ranking of No. 16 is his career high and he s also ranked No. 12 in doubles with junior Robert Kelly. The Carolina freshman got the chance in the NCAA third round to avenge one of his two losses as Tar Heel. Blumberg s last defeat was on Feb. 18, when UNC faced California in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships and Andre Goransson won 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Thursday the first and second sets played out similarly, but Blumberg flipped the third to take the win over No. 61 Goransson, 6-2, 3-6, Honors and Awards ITA Carolina Region Senior of the Year Ronnie Schneider ITA Carolina Region Rookie of the Year William Blumberg ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award Ronnie Schneider ACC Freshman of the Year William Blumberg All-Atlantic Coast Conference William Blumberg (1st) Ronnie Schneider (1st) Robert Kelly (2nd) ACC Player of the Week Ronnie Schneider, Jan. 31 Athletic Director s Scholar-Athlete Ronnie Schneider ACC Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Award Ronnie Schneider Strength & Conditioning Awards Iron Ram: Blaine Boyden Most Improved: Jack Murray Newcomer: Simon Soendergaard Current ITA Rankings (May 4) Team 9th (High this spring is No. 4, low is No. 13) Singles 16. 4 quickly became a part of the Tar Heel family. Players visited him daily when he was undergoing treatments at UNC Children s Hospital, and when Mick was well enough he attended many matches. At the 2016 ITA National Indoor Championship, each player wrote MM on his shoes and after the Tar Heels won the title, they dedicated it to Mick. When the team was honored on the court at the UNC-Duke men s basketball game later that week, Mick joined the fun, accompanying the Tar Heels onto the court, even though it was way past his bedtime. Mick lost his battle with cancer in December of 2016 and the team is playing this season in his memory, inspired by their teammate. Paul Moving Up the Charts Sam Paul picked up his 419th career victory on Jan. 22 as the Tar Heels beat UT Chattanooga 6-0, making him the winningest coach in program history. He moved ahead of Don Skakle, who coached the Tar Heels to 418 wins in his 22-year career in Chapel Hill, Coach Skakle was incredible, Paul said. To even be coaching at the same university is an honor he s a legend. I just want to say thank you to the players who have been here over the last 24 years. I ve never won a match here it s the players. I thank my staff and especially Tripp Phillips, my assistant, who was also a player here. Heading into the NCAA final, Paul is in his 24th year at UNC. Tar Heels Report Stellar APR The UNC men s tennis program performed extremely well in the latest Academic Progress Rate report. Men s tennis was one of eight UNC teams to rank among the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports. The APR measures a team s academic success by tracking the progress of each scholarship studentathlete, accounting for eligibility, retention and graduation. This year s award is based on multi-year rates from data including the school years from to Men s tennis was one of 16 UNC teams to score a perfect 1000 for the school year, the most recent one for which APR scores are available. This APR report is the sixth time in a row that the Tar Heels have earned a perfect score. UNC in the Rankings The Tar Heels have spent the season ranked among the nation s top teams. They ve been as high as fourth and as low as 13th. UNC has been ranked in the top 15 continuously since April 21, The Tar Heels haven t fallen outside the top 25 in more than three years, since Feb. 4, UNC in the rankings in 2017 Jan. 4 9 Jan Jan Feb. 1 7 Feb. 8 5 Feb Feb March 7 5 March 14 4 March 21 9 March April 4 11 April April April May 4 9 Tar Heel Family The spirit and strength of the Tar Heel family was evident earlier this spring when every player on the team had his head shorn in support of Pam Boyden, the mother of sophomore Blaine Boyden. Pam, who lives in Raleigh, is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. As a show of support for her, Blaine (whose teammates call him Bo), shaved his head. And after he did that, the whole team jumped on-board. A lot of these guys, they care a lot about their hair, Blaine Boyden said to the Daily Tar Heel. For them to do that for me, it meant the world, and I know it meant the world to my mom. Back on the Court Stuart DePaolo is back on the court a year after his senior season, this time in a different role. After wrapping up his playing career in 2016 and graduating from UNC, DePaolo joined the team this spring as a volunteer assistant. A Spanish major from Asheville, N.C., he plans to eventually attend medical school. DePaulo s addition made two alums on the UNC staff. Associate head coach Tripp Phillips played for the Tar Heels from , earning All-America honors as a senior. He joined the Tar Heel staff in 2006 and was promoted to his current position in In 2016 he was named the National Assistant Coach of the Year by the ITA. Leader in All-America Honorees UNC led the nation in men s tennis All-America selections in 2016 with five Tar Heels earning the honor. Twenty-seven teams had at least one player honored in singles or doubles for 2016, but Carolina was the only one to put five on the list. Virginia was second with four, and UCLA, Florida, Wake Forest and Texas A&M had three each. UNC became the first Atlantic Coast Conference men s tennis program ever to have five All-America honorees in one year. Earning All-America honors for UNC were Brett Clark (doubles), Robert Kelly (doubles), Jack Murray (doubles), Ronnie Schneider (singles) and Brayden Schnur (doubles). Schnur earned All-America honors for the third year in a row, after being recognized for singles in his freshman and sophomore years. He was just the third player in program history to earn All-America honors in three separate years. The honor was the first for Clark, Kelly, Murray and Schneider. Schnur elected to go pro following the 2016 season and Clark graduated. The other three are still in Carolina blue and looking for more honors this season. North Carolina beat VCU 4-0 Friday to advance in NCAA Men s Tennis Championship play and will face South Carolina in a second-round match Saturday afternoon. The ninth-ranked Tar Heels were led by their upperclassmen as they improved to 25-4 on the season with the win at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. On a chilly, damp afternoon, a focused UNC team rolled to a quick point in doubles, winning 6-1 at No. 1 and 6-2 at No. 2. It was a big priority for us during the week to put an emphasis on doubles and I think all that practice paid off today, Carolina senior Jack Murray said. The Tar Heels won all six first sets in singles. Murray at No. 5 was the first to pick up a win, beating Ignacio Rivero 6-1, 6-1. On match point, Rivero returned Murray s serve into the net, giving the senior from Birmingham Hills, Mich., the 100th singles victory of his stellar career at UNC. That s tremendous, UNC coach Sam Paul said. For anyone to get to that benchmark, that s a great career. Classmate Schneider added the next point, winning 6-3, 6-3 over VCU s Daryl Monfils at the top spot. Junior Robert Kelly sealed the match with a win at No. 3. The first set went to a tiebreaker, which Kelly won 7-5. The first singles match to finish was at No. 1, where South Carolina s Gabriel Friedrich, ranked 71st, beat UNC s Schneider, ranked 22nd, 6-1, 6-3. That tied the score at 1-1, but the deadlock lasted only two minutes before Blumberg, ranked 16th, finished off No. 71 Harrison O Keefe on Court 2, 6-4, 6-4. The other four courts played on for just over 10 minutes before Tar Heel sophomore Blaine Boyden won on Court 6, beating Paul Jubb 6-2, 6-4. Two minutes later, Soendergaard won his second set 6-4 over Yancy Dennis to clinch the match for Carolina. All the credit to Will for doing a great job like he s been doing all year, and to Bo and Simon for coming good in the end, Murray said. We have so much fight and different guys who can step up every day. This is a familiar script for the Tar Heel seniors. In 2014, freshman year for Murray and Schneider, UNC beat South Carolina 4-1 in a secondround match in Chapel Hill to advance to the Sweet 16 in Athens. Carolina reached the Elite 8 and replicated that finish in 2015 and Now they get the chance to go back one more time. We re looking forward to going to Athens, Paul said. I m really happy for our senior class to finish out here with a win, and it s the fourth time for them to go to the Sweet 16. I m just extremely happy for my entire team. #9 North Carolina 4, #20 South Carolina 1 Doubles Results Order of match finish: (1,2) 1. #12 Blumberg/Kelly (UNC) def. North Carolina earned a spot in the NCAA Men s Tennis Tournament quarterfinals for the fourth year in a row Thursday, beating No. 8 California 4-1 at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. With the third-round win, UNC improved to 27-4 on the season, just a victory shy of last season s school-record wins total. On a warm evening on the University of Georgia s home courts, Carolina won the doubles point on a tiebreaker on Court 1 after the teams split the other two matches. UNC s 12th-ranked team of junior Robert Kelly and freshman William Blumberg beat California s fifth-ranked Florian Lakat and Filip Bergevi, claiming the tiebreaker 7-2 to take the match 7-6. After a hard fight for the doubles point, UNC ran out to a quick lead in singles, taking all six first sets. Senior Jack Murray was the first to close out his singles match, winning 6-4, 6-3 on Court 5. But the Golden Bears won second sets on the other five courts to send each to a third set. Blumberg was the next to close out, giving the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead. Playing on Court 2, he took the first set 6-2, fell 3-6 in the second and then came back to take the third 6-2 to beat No. 61 Andre Goransson. The victory avenged one of just two singles losses for Blumberg this spring. With UNC leading 3-0, the Golden Bears took their only point of the evening, on Court 6. Tar Heel sophomore Blaine Boyden won his first set 6-3 but fell in the other two, losing for just the fourth time this spring. The three courts still active then had a race to the finish, with senior Ronnie Schneider on Court 1 and freshman Simon Soendergaard on Court 4 each a game from closing out, while Kelly on Court 3 was tied 5-5 in the third set. Ultimately, it was the Tar Heels top player who did the honors, as 22nd-ranked Schneider won 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 over 12th-ranked Lakat to clinch the win. #9 North Carolina 4, #8 California 1 Doubles Results Order of match finish: (3,2,1) 1. #12 Blumberg/Kelly (UNC) def. #5 Bergevi/Lakat (Cal), 7-6(2) 2. #74 Goransson/Griffith (Cal) def. #82 Murray/Soendergaard (UNC), Kodali/Schneider (UNC) def. 7 The Tar Heels 2017 NCAA Tournament So Far... and a nearly five-hour rain delay Saturday to earn a spot in the NCAA Men s Tennis Tournament final four for the first time in program history. The ninth-ranked Tar Heels defeated No. 1 Wake Forest 4-2 in a match that spanned eight hours, finishing up just after the stroke of midnight on Sunday morning at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Ga. I m so proud of my team, UNC coach Sam Paul said. They were focused and ready to go. They handled everything. UNC is now 28-4 overall, tying the program record for wins in a season, which was set last spring. The Tar Heels and Demon Deacons met previously this season, with Wake Forest winning 4-3 on its home court on March 10. UNC lost the doubles point in that match but managed to reverse that start on Saturday. On Court 2, senior Jack Murray and freshman Simon Soendergaard pulled out a 6-4 win, but Wake Forest s fourth-ranked team of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim earned a 7-5 win over UNC s 12th-ranked Robert Kelly and William Blumberg on Court 1. That brought the point down to Court 3, where Tar Heel senior Ronnie Schneider and sophomore Anu Kodali clinched it with a 6-2 win. In singles, the first through fourth spots saw hotly-contested first sets, while the Tar Heels claimed the others 6-2. Murray earned a speedy win on Court 5, where he followed the 6-2 first set win over Dennis Uspensky with a 6-0 victory in the second to make it 2-0 Tar Heels. That player beat him in the regular season 2 and 1, Paul said, and Jack sets the tone for us. Just a fantastic performance. Murray was the only player to have finished his singles match when the weather delay began. It stretched into a nearly five-hour wait before play finally resumed on the outdoor courts around 11 p.m. Paul was pleased with the way his team handled the stoppage in play and the uncertainty that went with it. They just rolled with it, he said. It was a pretty loose locker room. I knew they were feeling good so I felt good about us coming back out. On Court 1, WFU s Petros Chrysocos edged Carolina s Ronnie Schneider on a tiebreaker in the first set and led 1-0 at the stoppage. After play resumed, Chrysocos cruised on to a 6-2 win and a point for the Demon Deacons. Wake then evened the match at 2-2 with Mansouri beating Kelly 7-5, 6-4 on Court 3. On Court 2, Blumberg fought to a 7-5 first-set win over Borna Gojo in a battle between the only two freshmen to make this season s All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team. At the time of the break, Gojo led 3-0 in the second set, but after play resumed Blumberg tied it up at 4-4. The two ultimately went into a tiebreaker, which Blumberg won 8-6 to give the Tar Heels the edge again. UNC was then a point away from a landmark victory, needing either sophomore Blaine Boyden (up 5-2 in the third set at No. 6) or Soendergaard (trailing 3-2 at No. 4) to win in order to extend the season one more match. Boyden, who won his first set 6-2 then lost 6-1 in the second, was the first to head into a third set and ultimately the last to finish one. When he downed Alan Gadijev with a 6-2 win in the third, Boyden whipped off his shirt and ignited a UNC celebration. It is a dream come true, honestly, he said. Last night, (associate head coach) Tripp Phillips really sat me down and told me, yesterday, you weren t the hero, but tomorrow you can bounce back. That is the great thing about our team. We have a bunch of guys that compete and today was the day that I stepped up and sent the team to the semifinals. #9 North Carolina 4, #1 Wake Forest 2 Doubles Results Order of match finish: (2,3,1 ) 1. #4 Mansouri/Seraphim (WFU) def. #12 Blumberg/Kelly (UNC), #82 Murray/Soendergaard (UNC) def. The North Carolina men s tennis team earned another game in its season and another program first Monday, beating No. 12 Georgia 4-3 on the Bulldogs home court to advance to the NCAA title match, set for Tuesday at 1 p.m. Monday s semifinals match, which included a four-hour rain delay and started outdoors at Dan Magill Tennis Center but finished inside, came down to Court 6, where UNC sophomore Blaine Boyden fought to a 6-3 third-set win over Georgia s Robert Loeb to seal the victory for the Tar Heels. I m just so proud of my guys, said UNC coach Sam Paul, who is in his 24th year with the program. Total team effort. We re excited and looking forward to playing tomorrow. UNC opened by taking the doubles point, rallying to win on Courts 1 and 2 after the Bulldogs claimed a 6-2 win on Court 3. At No. 1, 12thranked Robert Kelly and William Blumberg knocked off the nation s top ranked doubles team in Jan Zielinski and Robert Loeb, 6-3. The point came down to the No. 2 spot, where UNC s Jack Murray and Simon Soendergaard, ranked #82, also beat a higher-ranked team, besting #67 Emil Reinberg and Nathan Ponwith, 7-5. We lost the doubles point to Georgia back at National Team Indoors and we ve worked hard on that, Paul said. For Jack and Simon to step up, that gave us a lot of momentum going into singles. The Tar Heels took first sets on Courts 2, 3, 4 and 6. On Court 6, Boyden played through a first-set tiebreaker, which he won 7-0 just as Blumberg finished up his match at No. 2. Blumberg s 6-3, 6-2 win gave UNC a 2-0 lead but the Bulldogs claimed the next point, with Walker Duncan beating Murray on Court 5, 6-1, 7-5, to cut UNC s lead to 2-1. Kelly then won on Court 3, beating #59 Reinberg in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. On Court 4, Soendergaard trailed 6-5 in the second set but fought back to force a tiebreaker. He jumped out to a 4-0 lead, on the cusp of closing out the match, but Zielinski then reeled off seven straight points to win it 7-4 and force the interrupted third set. Senior Ronnie Schneider fell on Court 1 to Ponwith to again draw the Bulldogs within one, 3-2. At 12:57 p.m., nearly three hours after the start of the match, a steady rain halted play. Eventually action was moved to the adjacent indoor courts, where the two singles matches restarted at 5 p.m. In both cases, the Tar Heels trailed by a game, 3-2 on Court 4 and 1-0 on Court 6. A rowdy, largely red-clad crowd, interrupted by pockets of Carolina blue, stretched all the way around the indoor courts. Soendergaard fell 6-3, and the match came down to Boyden, the same player who clinched UNC s quarterfinals win over No. 1 Wake Forest Saturday. On the brink of playing for a national championship, the sophomore from Raleigh took the court Monday with words from Associate Head Coach Tripp Phillips in his head. He said, You can be nervous about situations like this, or you can think of it as, this is what we play for, this is what all the hard work is for and this is an atmosphere you re never going to see again, Boyden remembered afterward. I went in with that mentality: This is a once-ina-lifetime opportunity, I m just going to embrace it. #9 North Carolina 4, #12 Georgia 3 Doubles Results Order of match finish: (3,1,2) 1. #12 Blumberg/Kelly (UNC) def. #1 Loeb/Zielinski (UGA), #82 Murray/Soendergaard (UNC) def. #67 Reinberg/Ponwith (UGA), Montgomery/Duncan (UGA) def.
