1 REGULAR SEASON GAME #9 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (5-3) AT MIAMI DOLPHINS (2-6) SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12, :00 PM (CENTRAL) DOLPHIN STADIUM MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA TV: CBS Regional Coverage (KCTV-5 in Kansas City) Gus Johnson and Steve Tasker. LOCAL RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP Kansas City makes the trek to South Florida for a second consecutive year as the Chiefs visit the Dolphins on Sunday. The Chiefs are 5-3 and are seeking to extend their winning streak to four games under head coach Herm Edwards, who has guided Kansas City to victories in five of its last six contests. Kansas City is coming off a convincing road win at St. Louis (11/5) after securing home victories against San Diego and Seattle. Meanwhile, Miami got a huge boost by snapping a four-game losing streak as the Dolphins handed the previously-undefeated Bears their first loss of the season, registering a decisive victory at Chicago (11/5). Last season, the Chiefs prevailed by a margin in an unusual Friday night contest at Miami (10/21/05). Kansas City traveled to Miami on the day of that game due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Wilma. The Chiefs will be seeking to win back-to-back road games against the Dolphins for the first time since registering victories in the club s initial three trips to Miami in Both the Chiefs and the Dolphins are playing with a quarterback other than their Opening Day starter. Former Miami QB Damon Huard has posted a 5-2 record as Kansas City s starter subbing for injured two-time Pro Bowl QB Trent Green. Huard has registered a rating of or better in all five of the Chiefs victories and currently ranks second in the NFL with a overall rating. In Miami, former Lions QB Joey Harrington has opened the last four games in place of QB Daunte Culpepper and threw three TDs last week against the Bears. The Chiefs are one of seven AFC squads that own a 5-3 record or better at the midseason mark and are in the thick of the AFC West race with Denver and San Diego, who both own 6-2 records. The Chiefs have averaged 32.0 points per game during their three-game winning streak thanks in large part to RB Larry Johnson who ranks second in the NFL in yards from scrimmage (143.1 ypg) and is third in rushing yards (102.0 ypg). Up next for the Chiefs is a home date vs. Oakland (11/19), while Miami hosts Minnesota (11/19) STATS AND NFL RANKINGS CHIEFS DOLPHINS Total Offense (14) (16) Rush Offense (9) 97.3 (23) Pass Offense (18) (10) Total Defense (13) (4t) Rush Defense (16) (13) Pass Defense (12) (4) Turnover Ratio (11t) -1 (17) Pts./Game (9) 16.6 (25t) Opp. Pts./Game (17) 19.8 (9) THE SERIES The Dolphins hold a slim, overall edge in the 25 meaningful games played in the series, including a pristine postseason mark of 3-0 against the Chiefs. The Chiefs have won their last two meetings with the Dolphins and are attempting to construct their first three-game winning streak against Miami since winning the first six games in this series from CHIEFS VS. That contest snapped the Chiefs six-game losing streak at Miami. KC is 6-10 all-time in games played at Miami, owning a 2-6 mark at Dolphin Stadium and a 4-4 record at the Orange Bowl. The Chiefs other victory at Dolphin Stadium came by a count (12/3/89). The Chiefs are 6-3 against the Dolphins in Kansas City, including a win at Arrowhead (9/29/02). Without question, the most memorable and most significant contest in this series was Miami s double-overtime AFC Divisional Playoff win at Kansas City (12/25/71), Miami s first-ever victory over the Chiefs after six straight losses dating back to 66. That Christmas Day classic remains the longest game in NFL history (82:40). It was not only the final game ever played at Kansas City s Municipal Stadium, but also marked the Chiefs final postseason appearance of the magnificent Hank Stram era. Miami also owns victories in two other historic postseason meetings against Kansas City. The Dolphins prevailed by a count in a 94 AFC Wild Card duel (12/31/94) between QBs Joe Montana and Dan Marino, a game that proved to be the final NFL contest of Montana s Hall of Fame career. Kansas City also suffered a gut-wrenching AFC First Round loss at Miami (1/5/91), an outing that marked the first of 10 playoff contests during Marty Schottenheimer s 10-year tenure ( 89-98) as Chiefs head coach.

Thomas was born in Miami on January 1, Thomas always appreciated the fact that his birthday coincided with one of the most memorable moments in Chiefs history as Kansas City claimed a 31-7 win vs. Buffalo in the 66 AFL Championship Game to earn a berth in Super Bowl I. In 11 glorious seasons with the Chiefs ( 89-99), Thomas earned nine Pro Bowl berths. Thomas tragically passed away in Miami on February 8, 2000 and is in his third year of eligibility for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This year s Hall of Fame selection meeting will take place in South Florida on Saturday, February 3rd prior to Super Bowl XLI at Dolphin Stadium on Sunday, February 4th. Thomas has been a finalist in the Hall of Fame selection process the past two years. If elected this year, he would become the 10th member of the Chiefs organization to earn a place in Canton, an illustrious list that already includes three defensive stalwarts LB Bobby Bell (HOF 83), LB Willie Lanier (HOF 86) and DT Buck Buchanan (HOF 90). Already a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame s NFL All-Decade Team of the 1990s, no player registered more sacks (116.5) than Thomas from Thanks in large part to Thomas and the Chiefs defense, only San Francisco (113-47) and Buffalo (103-57) produced better regular season records over that 10-year span than Kansas City (102-58). During the decade of the 90s, no team could top the +128 turnover differential and 365 takeaways produced by KC. With Thomas on the field for the Chiefs from 89-99, Kansas City made seven playoff appearances, won three AFC West titles and suffered only one losing season during his tenure with the franchise. He served as a leader of a Chiefs defense that led the NFL in scoring defense in both 95 and 97. In total, no NFL team allowed fewer offensive points from than Kansas City. Renowned for his patented sack-and-strip maneuver, Thomas was clearly one of the most dominant players of his era and still holds the NFL s singlegame record with 7.0 sacks vs. Seattle (11/11/90). Thomas led the NFL with 20.0 sacks in 90, making him just one of six players in league history to register a season with 20.0 or more sacks. 7 THE LAST GAME Chiefs 31, Rams 17 November 5, 2006 Edward Jones Dome 66,191 KANSAS CITY ST. LOUIS Thanks to three first-half turnovers by the Rams and a season-high 172 rushing yards out of RB Larry Johnson, the Chiefs escaped St. Louis with a win in the Governor s Cup series. Kansas City capitalized on three St. Louis fumbles, jumping out to a 17-0 lead on their I-70 rivals. Chiefs RB Dee Brown pounced on the first fumble after WR Dane Looker muffed a Dustin Colquitt punt at the Rams 14-yard line. That set up a Johnson one-yard TD run for a 7-0 lead. On the next possession, Chiefs DE Jared Allen sacked and stripped St. Louis QB Marc Bulger at the Rams 46-yard line. Rookie DT Stephen Williams recovered the fumble and watched his offense go for a knockout blow on the very next play. QB Damon Huard tossed a perfect 43-yard pass to WR Samie Parker down to the three-yard line. Huard then found TE Tony Gonzalez wide open in the end zone for a TD and a 14-0 lead. LB Keyaron Fox forced the third St. Louis fumble on the next series when he poked the ball free from RB Steven Jackson. Allen recovered the ball for Kansas City at the St. Louis 33-yard line, giving the Chiefs another short field and a 42-yard Lawrence Tynes field goal to open the game with 17 unanswered points. Staring down a 17-0 deficit and searching for answers, the Rams switched to a no-huddle offense to shake things up. The change in gameplan seemed to ignite them as Bulger fired backto-back big gains to WR Isaac Bruce to move inside the Red Zone. From there Jackson bulled across the goal line from two yards out to cut the Chiefs lead to 17-7 in the second quarter. Unfazed, the Chiefs would answer with a crisp, eight-play, 80-yard scoring march. Huard completed three passes on the drive including his second TD pass to Gonzalez, this time from 25 yards out. On the play, Huard side-stepped a blitzing CB Travis Fisher and found his Pro Bowl tight end down the seam to take a 24-7 lead with 0:48 left in the half. The Rams would sneak in a 41-yard field goal from Jeff Wilkins as time expired in the half to make the score at the break. St. Louis would edge closer with a methodical 12-play, 80- yard third-quarter drive. The Rams converted a fourth-and-one play and scored on a Bulger to WR Kevin Curtis pass on thirdand-goal from the two-yard line. Bulger who completed five of six passes on the drive and the Rams were now within one score at with 3:50 left in the third quarter. Kansas City s offense struggled to find its footing in the second half as it mustered just one first down in the third quarter. Then early in the fourth quarter the Chiefs got rolling from their own six-yard line. Johnson ripped off runs of 15 and 16 yards, then Huard hooked up with Gonzalez on a big third-down conversion to keep the drive alive. On the very next play, Huard took a hit, but still managed to hit TE Kris Wilson with an 11-yard TD pass to take a lead with 6:20 left in the game. St. Louis drove into the Chiefs Red Zone, however their comeback bid came up short when Bulger s third and fourth-down passes from inside the five-yard line were batted down. First, S Sammy Knight knocked down the third down attempt, then S Bernard Pollard iced the Chiefs victory on fourth down. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez caught two touchdown passes, bypassing WR Otis Taylor (57) for the most TD catches in Chiefs history. RB Larry Johnson made his 20th career NFL start. 12 THE LAST TIME Chiefs 30, Dolphins 20 October 21, 2005 Dolphins Stadium 68,350 KANSAS CITY MIAMI In an unusual scheduling quirk due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Wilma, Kansas City played under the Friday night lights in the regular season for the first time since 64. Despite flying to Miami on the day of the game instead of observing their normal schedule for a Sunday game, the Chiefs beat the Dolphins by a count at Dolphins Stadium. Kansas City jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when a 50-yard pass to WR Chris Horn set up a score on the opening drive. Holmes ran around the left end and followed the blocks of T Willie Roaf and WR Eddie Kennison for a five-yard TD. The Chiefs defense pitched a first-quarter shutout and only relinquished two Miami field goals in the first half. Kansas City would add a two-yard RB Larry Johnson touchdown run to give KC a 14-6 lead at intermission. After a first half that only featured 20 points between the two teams, it only took 1:01 for both teams to score a touchdown in the second half. First, it was Miami RB Ronnie Brown breaking off a 65-yard run down the left sideline for a touchdown to cut the Chiefs lead only 20 seconds into the third quarter. Kansas City took a mere 41 seconds to respond with a touchdown of its own when RB Priest Holmes scored on a 35- yard touchdown run, his second of the game. K Lawrence Tynes would add field goals of 30, 51 and a career-long 52 yards to increase the Chiefs lead to midway through the fourth quarter. Tynes joined K Nick Lowery as just the only other player in team history to register a pair of 50-yard FGs in the same game. QB Sage Rosenfels relieved Miami starter Gus Frerotte in the fourth quarter and promptly completed a 77-yard TD pass to WR Chris Chambers. It cut the lead to in favor of the Chiefs. Kansas City recovered Miami s ensuing onside kick and salted away the victory. The Chiefs two-headed rushing attack was at its finest in this contest. Holmes carried the ball 18 times for 90 yards (5.0 avg.) with two touchdowns, while Johnson added 23 rushes for 93 yards (4.0 avg.) with a score of his own. TE Tony Gonzalez recorded a season-high seven receptions for 67 yards (9.6 avg.) on the evening and QB Trent Green completed 20 of 34 passes for 289 yards for an 86.5 rating. Kansas City held the ball for 41:40 compared to just 18:20 for Miami. The Kansas City defense also proved its mettle, recording an INT and allowing Frerotte just 125 yards on 11-of-29 passing, good for a mere 37.3 rating. GAME NOTES Kansas City s win at Miami marked was the franchise s first regular season victory on a Friday night since the Dallas Texans registered a 27-7 win at Boston (10/12/62). The Chiefs defense forced eight punts, the club s highest tally since forcing eight punts in a 49-0 win vs. Arizona (12/1/02). RB Priest Holmes (1,261) bypassed RB Christian Okoye (1,246) for the most rushing attempts in KC history. QB Trent Green (17,452) moved ahead of QB Bill Kenney (17,277) into second on the Chiefs career passing yardage chart. CHIEFS Holmes, 5-yard run (Tynes kick) (8-80, 4:32).
