Last Time Out: The Valparaiso men s basketball team trailed by as many as 14 points before falling against Nebraska at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb. on Thursday night. Senior Kevin Van Wijk paced the Crusaders furious comeback bid, posting 20 points and six rebounds. The Crusaders ended the game on an 11-2 run to get back to within two points, but a last-ditch threequarters court shot fell short at the buzzer. Head Coach Bryce Drew: Bryce Drew returns for his second season at the helm of the Valparaiso men s basketball program in after leading the Crusaders to the Horizon League regular season title in his first year as head coach. Drew was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year after guiding Valpo to a 22-win campaign, including a 14-4 mark within the league to capture the title by two games. Drew ascended to the head coaching position on May 17, 2011 after spending six seasons as an assistant and associate head coach with the Crusaders. Series Notes: For the second consecutive game and the third time in their first four games, the Crusaders are matching up against a team they have faced just twice in program history. Valpo and Kent State have met just twice on the hardwood, with the Golden Flashes winning both previous meeting. 5 Ryan Broekhoff Honors - Ryan Broekhoff was named the #HLMBB Player of the Year in after helping to the regular season title. - Broekhoff was also named an Honorable Mention All-American by - Broekhoff has been picked as a Preseason First Team member entering his senior season. - Broekhoff was chosen as a preseason Third Team Mid Major All-American by NBC Sports College Basketball Talk (@CBTonNBC). - Broekhoff appeared lists of the nation s top-30 under-the-radar players (#6) and top-50 wings (#43). - Broekhoff also was picked as the nation s #28 shooter on his list of top-50 shooters. 6 Matt Kenney - Kenney scored all 16 of his points in the win over Northern Illinois in the second half. - Kenney was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor (3-for-3 from 3- point range) over a span of 9:31 against the Huskies. - Kenney grabbed six rebounds and handed out three assists last time out at Nebraska. - Kenney currently is ranked 18th history with 238 career assists. - Kenney averaged 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a junior for the Crusaders in Kenney came off the bench for his final 19 games of the season, but still finished second on the team with 27.8 minutes/gm. Will Bogan - Bogan hit a pair of 3-pointers in the Crusaders season-opening win over Georgia Southern. - Bogan started 32 games in his first season in , averaging 7.2 points per game. - Bogan ranked second among Crusaders with 61 3-pointers and hit from downtown at a 40.9% clip. - Bogan s 3-point percentage ranked seventh in the Horizon League and is tied for ninth-best in a single season history. - Bogan was male newcomer of the year by Valpo s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. - Bogan made a career-high seven 3-pointers and scored 24 points in the Crusaders win at Detroit Jan. 6. Ben Boggs - Boggs connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to give Valpo a double-digit lead for good in its win over Northern Illinois. - Boggs scored 7 points and led the Crusaderswith seven rebounds in the season-opening win over Georgia Southern. - Boggs became eligible after the end of the first semester last year and appeared in 24 games, starting Boggs averaged 4.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game for the Crusaders, who were 14-6 in his starts. - Boggs shot better than 80% from the free throw line in his first season with Valpo, second-best on the team. Bobby Capobianco - Capobianco has missed the Crusaders first three regular season games due to injury. - Capobianco in scoring in both exhibitions, scoring 19 points against St. Joe s and 21 points against Robert Morris. - Capobianco also grabbed eight rebounds in each exhibition game, leading the Crusaders in the win over Robert Morris. - Capobianco combined to shoot 13-for-20 from inside the arc and 11-for-12 from the free throw line in the two exhibitions. - Capobianco played his first two seasons and sat out last season after transferring - Capobianco has two seasons of eligibility remaining with the Crusaders. Vashil Fernandez - Fernandez recorded a team-high four blocked shots in Tuesday morning s win over Northern Illinois. - Fernandez debuted with a pair of dunks in the regular season opening win over Georgia Southern. - Fernandez is eligible to play this season after sitting out the season and has 3 years of eligibility left. - Fernandez made his senior international debut this past summer for Jamaica (@goteamja) at the FIBA Centrobasket tournament. - Fernandez to a 3rd place finish, its best ever at Centrobasket. - Fernandez debuted in a win over the USVI and also played in the bronze-medal win over Panama. Jordan Coleman - Coleman made his Crusader debut against Georgia Southern, scoring 15 points and grabbing five rebounds off the bench. - Coleman knocked down the first five 3-point attempts of his Crusader career before missing his only try from deep at Nebraska. - Coleman is eligible to play immediately after transferring from Southwestern Illinois College. - Coleman was an All-Conference selection for SWIC last season, finishing second on the team with 10.2 ppg. - Coleman started his collegiate career as a freshman Alex Rossi - Rossi connected on the first five field goals of his Valpo career before missing his only attempt from the floor at Nebraska. - Rossi debuted with 11 minutes of play in the season opener against Georgia Southern, hitting all three of his 3-point attempts for 9 points. - Rossi handed out six assists without committing a turnover in the first exhibition win for Valpo over St. Joe s. - Rossi is eligible to play immediately after spending his first two years - Rossi has three seasons of eligibility remaining with the Crusaders.

8 Bryce Drew Head Coach 2nd Season overall at Valpo Valparaiso, 1998 Head coach Bryce Drew returns for his second season at the helm of the Valparaiso men s basketball program in after leading the Crusaders to the Horizon League regular season title in his first year as head coach. Drew led Valpo to 22 victories in his rookie season at the reins, including a 14-4 mark in Horizon League play to capture the league regular season title by two games. He also guided the Crusaders to the Postseason NIT as the program earned a postseason berth for the 11th time in the last 17 seasons. Drew was honored as the Horizon League Coach of the Year for his efforts on the bench, while he coached two First Team All-League selections in Kevin Van Wijk and Ryan Broekhoff, the latter of whom was named the league Player of the Year and an Honorable Mention All-American. Valparaiso University director of athletics Mark LaBarbera announced at a press conference on the Valparaiso campus on May 17, 2011 that Drew had been hired as the 21st head coach in the history of the Crusader men s basketball program. Drew, the most decorated player in Crusader men s basketball history, spent the six seasons prior to his hiring as head coach as a member of the Valparaiso coaching staff, including the previous five years as associate head coach. Drew, who helped guide Valpo through their transition into a top-ten league in the Horizon League, became just the fourth new head coach of the Crusader men s basketball program in the last 31 years. Drew joined the Valparaiso coaching staff prior to the season, and over his six seasons on the bench as an assistant/associate helped lead the Crusaders to 102 victories. With Drew on the staff, Valpo moved into the Horizon League in and returned to the postseason with a trip to the College Basketball Invitational, where it won its first-round game at Washington. In his final season as associate head coach, he helped guide the Crusaders to 23 wins and a postseason berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament while receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll for four consecutive weeks. Over his tenure as a member of the Crusader coaching staff, Drew has coached 13 players who have gone on to play professional basketball overseas. He has helped coach Valparaiso as it has led the Horizon League in scoring twice, while the Crusaders paced the conference this past season in defensive field goal percentage in league play. Valparaiso also set the Horizon League single-season record for 3-pointers made (330) during the season. Drew was recognized among the league s and nation s top assistant coaches by Hoop Scoop and Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.com and also has been named among the Top Recruiters of Chicago by the Chicago Sun-Times. As a student-athlete, Drew cemented himself as the best player in Valparaiso men s basketball history. Drew, who arrived at Valpo after earning Indiana Mr. Basketball honors and being named Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year in 1994, began his career by garnering Mid- Continent Conference Newcomer of the Year and Mid-Con Tournament MVP honors as a freshman. Drew, a four time All-Conference honoree, shined during the conference tournaments, earning All-Tournament Team honors each of his four seasons and picking up three Mid-Continent Conference Tournament MVP awards. He was also twice decorated as Mid-Con Most Valuable Player, one of only four players to be so honored twice in their career. Drew s career culminated as a senior by being named a Third Team All-American by the Basketball Times. In addition to his individual accolades, Drew led the Crusaders to four Mid-Continent Conference regular season championships, four tournament titles and three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Drew, the career leader in points (2,142), three-point field goals (364) and assists (626) at Valpo, etched his name into the American consciousness in 1998 when he hit The Shot in the Opening Round of the NCAA Tournament to beat Ole Miss. The play, in which Drew caught a tip pass from teammate Bill Jenkins off a full-court feed from Jamie Skyes, won Drew an ESPY award and gave Valpo its first NCAA Tournament win in school history, propelling the Crusaders to the Sweet Sixteen. Drew also excelled internationally during his time on the court with the Crusaders, playing for the gold-medal winning Team USA at the World University Games in Following his collegiate career, Drew again made school history when the Houston Rockets drafted him with the 16th pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, the first time a Crusader had been chosen in the first round. Drew s NBA career lasted six seasons with the Rockets, Chicago Bulls, and Charlotte and New Orleans Hornets, with his best season coming in when he started 41 games for the Bulls, averaging 6.3 points and 3.9 assists per game. A prolific shooter, Drew set a Hornet record when he connected on nine consecutive threepoint attempts. Twice as a pro, he competed in the postseason, with Houston in 1999 and again in 2002 as a member of the Charlotte Hornets. Over the course of his NBA career, Drew scored over 1,000 points and made 37% of his three-point attempts. In 1999, he was honored by the NBA with the Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Award for sportsmanship. Drew played alongside 12 NBA All-Stars during his time in the NBA, including three players who were named among the Top 50 NBA Players of All Time. He also played under a quintet of head coaches who have combined for five NBA Championship rings. Following his six seasons in the NBA, Drew played professionally overseas for a season, playing for Reggio Calabria (Italian Serie A) and Pamesa Valencia (Spanish Liga ACB) before returning to the States to join the Crusader coaching staff. Drew is twice a member of the Valparaiso University Hall of Fame, as he was inducted as an individual in 2003 and as part of the Sweet Sixteen team in He also has been honored as one of the 150 most influential people in Valparaiso University s 150 years.
