Through 17 games, New York ranked last in the WNBA averaging 14.8 bench points per game, but over the final 17 games of the year, the Liberty averaged 24.0 ppg from its 2nd unit. This allowed the Liberty to improve to 9th in the league, at 19.7 ppg, and the 24.0 ppg if averaged over the course of the seaosn would have been the 4th-best mark in the WNBA. New York went 14-3 during the 2nd half of the season. In the moments leading up to the game, the Liberty and Lynx players locked arms with members of the NYPD and youth from Covenant House in a show of solidarity on court. O CANADA Rookie Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe showed off her explosiveness in the win at Connecticut on 8/18, getting to the rim and drawing contact to finish with a career-high 12 points. It was her 3rd game of the season in double figures, and 1st since scoring 10 points at Connecticut back on June 14. She was 3-of-5 from the field, but was able to get to the free throw line 10 times, where she shot 6-of-10. QUEENS OF THE GLASS On June 7, the Liberty picked up a win over the Atlanta Dream, limiting Atlanta to just 27.6 percent shooting from the field. As a result there were a lot of rebounds to clean up, and Tina Charles and Kiah Stokes proved up to the task. Stokes (17) and Charles (15) each hauled in at least 15 rebounds, becoming just the 4th duo in the history of the WNBA to have at least 15+ rebounds in the same game, and only the second to do so in a non-overtime contest, or in a victory. Their 32 rebounds combined were just three fewer than Atlanta s team rebound tally (35). 25 GM SURVEY Tina Charles was widely featured in the Annual WNBA GM Preseason survey, receiving many accolades for her impressive play in the paint. Charles was voted as having the best post-moves in the league (75%) and saw a handful of her trademark scoring offensive moves mentioned including her hook shot, fadeaway, and reverse pivot. Additionally, Charles tied with Maya Moore as the players coaches and GM s think is most hungry to win a WNBA title this season. LIBERTY ACQUIRES VAUGHN & HARTLEY In a three-way trade with the Washington Mystics and Seattle Storm, the Liberty acquired center Kia Vaughn and guard Bria Hartley from the Mystics, while trading center Carolyn Swords to the Seattle Storm. The Storm also sent their 1st round pick to the Mystics. For Vaughn, it is her 2nd stint with the Liberty, as she was originally drafted by New York and played for the team from , posting career bests of 10.1 ppg and 6.7 rpg in She has career averages of 6.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg. Hartley, a former standout at the University of Connecticut where she spent three years as a teammate of Kiah Stokes, boasts career averages of 7.1 ppg and 2.4 apg, while shooting.317 from 3-point range. HAPPY MOTHER S DAY It was a very happy Mother s Day for one of the newest members of the Liberty. Guard Bria Hartley gave birth to her 1st child, Bryson, in January The Long Island native was acquired by the Liberty just two weeks later, meaning she now gets to play for her home town squad and be closer to friends and family while resuming her career as a working Mom. Hartley appeared in 24 games last season for the Washington Mystics, but missed the final 10 games of the season after the Olympic break due to her pregnancy. The season opener on May 13 was Hartley s 1st WNBA action since July 22, NY STATE OF MIND The Liberty has a very New York-centric roster, with four players hailing from either one of NYC s five boroughs or Long Island. Tina Charles (Queens), Epiphanny Prince (Brooklyn), Kia Vaughn (Bronx), and Bria Hartley (Long Island) are all from New York. The connections do not stop there, as Prince, Vaughn, and Hartley all played for the Exodus AAU program, while Vaughn and Prince went on to become teammates collegiately at Rutgers, helping guide the Scarlet Knights to the NCAA Championship game in FRANCHISE PLAYERS New York has added a pair of all-time greats to its front office staff, tabbing both Swin Cash and Teresa Weatherspoon for new roles as Director of Franchise Development. For Cash, she becomes the first player in WNBA history to transition directly from a playing career into a role in a team s front office. The roles will have a footing in both basketball and business operations. Weatherspoon will continue in her role as the Liberty s Director of Player Development, but will see an increased presence in the franchise s off court and team business initiatives. CHARLES NAMED 1ST TEAM ALL-WNBA Forward Tina Charles was named All-WNBA First Team after leading the league in scoring and rebounding in 2016, becoming the first Liberty player in franchise history to receive 1st Team all-league accolades in consecutive seasons. Charles was named to the All-WNBA First Team for the fourth time in her career after leading the WNBA in scoring (21.5 ppg) and rebounding (9.9 rpg), joining Chamique Holdsclaw (2002) and Lauren Jackson (2007) as the only players to lead the WNBA in both categories in the same season. Charles, who finished second in the MVP balloting, also led the league in double-doubles (20). CHARLES IN RAREFIED AIR In 2016 Charles became just the 3rd player in WNBA history to lead the league in scoring and rebounding with 21.5 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Only Chamique Holdsclaw (2002) and Lauren Jackson (2007) had accomplished that feat previously, so Charles was the first to do so in nearly a decade. The only NBA players to lead the league in scoring and rebounding were Wilt Chamberlain, Bob Pettit, and Neil Johnston. The Liberty had never had a player lead the league in scoring or rebounding; Charles accomplished both in the same year Charles 21.5 ppg average was a new single-season franchise record, eclipsing Cappie Pondexter s 21.4 ppg during the 2010 season Charles had never led the league in scoring, but she had led the WNBA in rebounding on three occasions, from , which includes her Rookie of the Year (2010) and Most Valuable Player (2012) seasons. HOMECOMING Center Kia Vaughn has officially begun her 2nd stint with the New York Liberty. Vaughn, a native of the Bronx, who was drafted by New York in 2009, played four years for the Liberty before being traded to the Washington Mystics prior to the start of the 2013 season. This is the 1st time Vaughn plays for head coach Bill Laimbeer. She enjoyed her best professional season in New York in 2011, when she averaged career-bests in points (10.1 ppg) and rebounds (6.7 rpg). #SHOW UP 2017 SEASON LAUNCH PRESENTED BY TACKLE KIDS CANCER Making a broad impact in the community across New York City and New Jersey, the New York Liberty held its 2017 Season Launch presented by Tackle Kids Cancer at Hackensack University Medical Center on May 10. The community initiative included a wide array of activations, including chess lessons, basketball clinics, an empowerment panel, and serving meals to the homeless.
