SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - A-10 TOURNAMENT - PG. 2 HEAD COACH PHIL MARTELLI In 10 years at Saint Joseph s, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post-season participant and a key player on the national scene. Although he swept the National Coach of the Year honors in 2004, Martelli turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job in as the Hawks were faced with the loss of two NBA first-round draft picks from the squad that went 30-2 and posted a perfect regular season (27-0). After the Hawks struggled in the early going, Martelli reworked the team s style of play to guide SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14-2) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. For his efforts, he was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks earned their fifth consecutive postseason bid and made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that Martelli had guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli s 11-year career record is now , but more impressively, his teams have gone in the past six seasons (counting this year). He currently ranks third on SJU s all-time list for coaching victories and is fourth in winning percentage (.639). Setting the school record for wins in a season in 2004 (30), the coach has guided SJU to 20 or more victories five times in 10 seasons. Martelli is in Atlantic 10 play, ranking him third on the A-10 s list for conference regular season victories. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most. His 16 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 10 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of coaching legend Jack Ramsay s total of 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.695 postseason winning percentage (16-7). The coach has taken Saint Joseph s to the postseason in five consecutive years, with three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his 10 seasons. In the summer of 2005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men s U21 World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. It was the coach's third assignment with USA Basketball having served as a USA assistant coach for gold-medal winning teams at both the 2001 FIBA World Championship for Young Men and the 1998 Goodwill Games. In , Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a number-one national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight. After 10 years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school s 14th head coach in 1995 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season ( ) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. SERIES HISTORY SAINT JOSEPH S VS. Stachitas, who earns All- Conference honors for the first time in his career, was also named to the All-Academic Team for the second straight season. Nivins is the Hawks first All-Rookie selection since , when Jameer Nelson earned mention. It gives SJU a run of seven consecutive years in which it has had at least one All-Conference selection. THE IDES OF MARCH: Phil Martelli always seems to have his clubs playing their best at the right time of year. The Hawks enter this tournament riding a five-game winning streak, which is their longest of the year. SJU started league play at 1-4 and lingered in 10th or 11th place in the league from Jan. 11 to Feb. 21. Since Feb. 1, SJU has gone 6-4 to inch up in the standings and secure the fifth seed. Last season, SJU went 8-2 in the final 10 games of conference play to go 14-2 and earn the tournament s top seed. SJU then won five in a row in the NIT to reach the championship game. Over the past six years, Saint Joseph s has compiled a 25-5 record in the final five games of the regular-season slate. Here s the rundown: Year Last 5 (Reg. season) A-10 Tourn. Post-Season tba tba Finals NIT Finals Quarterfinals NCAA Elite Eight Semifinals NCAA 1st Round Quarterfinals NIT 2nd Round Semifinals NCAA 2nd Round Total 25-5 NEW ROLE: This marks the first time in three years that the Hawks are not the top seed in the tournament. In 2004, SJU was 27-0 and ranked #1 in the nation but was upset by Xavier in the quarterfinals. Last season, SJU reached the title game, but lost to George Washington. IN SEARCH OF: The Hawks are seeking their first Atlantic 10 Tournament title since 1997, when they defeated St. Bonaventure, George Washington and Rhode Island en route to the crown. Rashid Bey and Yah Davis were All-Championship Team selections in the tourney held at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. It was Phil Martelli s second season as head coach at SJU, and the Hawks went on from there to reach the NCAA Sweet 16. Saint Joseph s other Atlantic 10 title came in 1986, under the late Jim Boyle. HAWK HISTORY: Saint Joseph s has posted a record in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, advancing to the semifinals 10 times. The Hawks have reached the championship game three times (1986, 1997, 2005), winning it twice ( 86, 97). MARTELLI AND THE CHAMPIONSHIP: There s one common thread in the two Atlantic 10 titles won by Saint Joseph s (1986 and 1997), and it s that Phil Martelli was a part of both of them. Martelli was an assistant coach under the late Jim Boyle during the 1986 title run and then after taking over as head coach in , led Saint Joseph s to its second crown in PROVING THEM WRONG: The Hawks finished higher in the standings than was predicted by the A-10 s coaches in the preseason. The preseason poll had SJU in eighth place, but the Hawks lateseason run earned them the fifth seed. POST-SEASON PUSH: Saint Joseph s is seeking its sixth consecutive post-season bid and the eighth in Phil Martelli s 11 years. The Hawks current five-year streak consists of three trips to the NCAA Tournament and two appearances in the NIT. SENIOR MOMENT: Phil Martelli credits seniors Dwayne Lee, Dave Mallon and Chet Stachitas for the late-season push that has seen the Hawks win five in a row and move up to fifth in the league standings. We were about two weeks ago. You can pack it in or fight like hell. They pushed themselves and their teammates because they know the end is near.

SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - A-10 TOURNAMENT- PG. 4 IT S IN THE NUMBERS: The statistics from the last five wins tell the story for the Hawks, with the key numbers being the points allowed and the differential in rebounding. Abdulai Jalloh leads the team scoring 14.8 ppg during the streak, while Dwayne Lee is averaging 13.0 and Rob Ferguson 12.0 ppg. Winning Streak Stats Scoring Avg Opp. Scoring Avg Rebounding Avg Opp. Reb. Avg (reb. margin = +6.0) FG% pt FG% 44.8 FT% 82.3 BACKCOURT BOOST: Dwayne Lee and Abdulai Jalloh combined for one of their best games of the season, each scoring 18 points in the win at Xavier. Lee shot 5-for-10 from the field while Jalloh contributed 9-of-11 free throws. The duo seems to have snapped out of a scoring slump from early February. In the last four games, Jalloh is averaging 16.0 and Lee is scoring GOING OUT IN STYLE: As his career is winding down, Dwayne Lee has put together five straight double-figure scoring games. He s averaged 13.0 pts and 3.4 assists in the final five contests of the regular season, while shooting 50 percent (19-38) from the field and 47.6 percent (10-21) from 3-point range. In the previous four games (St. Bona., Villanova, GW, Temple), Lee was making only 5- for-17 from 3-point range and averaging just 8.5 points. CHARTING CHET: Chet Stachitas reached the 1000-point milestone vs. Fordham, but did it the hard way. Heading into the game, he needed just 6 points, but it took longer than expected. He took an elbow to the lip in the first half and played only six minutes before leaving the game to get five stitches. Stachitas returned at the start of the second half and wasted no time in getting the mark - he hit a 3-pointer at 18:31 and then made his next shot, a 3-pointer at 17:46 to reach the milestone. The senior didn't score the rest of the way, so his total stood at 1,000 until he had 11 vs. Richmond. He became the 44th player in Hawk history to achieve the feat and the fourth to reach the milestone in consecutive years, matching Pat Carroll ( 05), Delonte West ( 04) and Jameer Nelson ( 03). He finished the regular season with 1,030 career points. Phil Martelli said: We have never had a guy in my 21 years at St. Joe's that has gotten as much out of the Saint Joseph's experience as Chet has. He's an orientation leader, he's the president of the student-athlete advisory committee, he was Mr. SJU in a vote of the students, he's an Academic All-American. He has squeezed everything out of this experience. And to think about the players he played with to get 1,000 points is a really significant accomplishment. He didn't play much as a freshman, wasn't a main option as a sophomore and then last year he played second fiddle to a guy (Pat Carroll) who had as good a year as you could have. So it's really a terrific achievement." SURE SHOTS: The Hawks are the top free throw shooting team in the c o u n t ry at 79.3 percent, edging out New Hampshire (78.8) and Gonzaga (78.7). SJU has been ranked in the top two all season long, except for one week when it dropped to third. The team s perf o rmance is a definite i m p rovement from last year when SJU h o v e red around the 50 to 60 percent mark at the line. Chet Stachitas leads the team at 83% with four of five starters converting 76 percent or better. Stachitas, Abdulai Jalloh and Dwayne Lee rank among the top six in the conference. STANDING PAT: Pat Calathes has seen increased playing time as of late, and has made some key contributions on offense. He s shown the knack for finding the open man and in the last five games of the regular season, averaged 3.75 assists, with a high of six vs. Richmond. At Duquesne, Calathes led the Hawks with a career-high 17 points and grabbed a personal best eight rebounds. It marked the first double-figure scoring game of his career. IRON MAN: Dwayne Lee has been forced to carry a heavy load as the Hawks point guard this year. He s averaging a team-high 37.1 minutes per game, has been called on to play all 40 minutes nine times and has seen 39 minutes of action in four games. In fact, out of 1,080 possible minutes in the 27 games, Lee has played 1002 minutes, or 92.7 percent. FOR THE DEFENSE: Phil Martelli has praised the Hawk defense and said it s been solid all season long. The defensive eff o rt has been outstanding and that s what this team has done all year, they ve paid attention to the defensive game plan. And that enables us because we are limited on offense. In recent games,, the Hawks held Fordham without a basket for a stretch of seven minutes and shut down Richmond for close to eight minutes in the second half. He cited the defense as the key to the Xavier win since the Hawks shot 38% and had more turn o v e r s (11) than assists (10). F I N A L LY FOR FERG: Phil Martelli has often said that he expects R o b F e rg u s o n to be a double-figure score r. And after lingering just below the 10-point mark all season, Ferguson made it up to 10.2 in the final few regular season games. Overall, he s notched double figures 13 times, and has a perfect game to his credit - he went 7-for-7 from the field at Duquesne en route to 16 points. OFF THE MARK: After making 14-of-26 3-point field goals in the win over Temple (Jan. 8), the Hawks struggled from beyond the arc. In the eight games that followed, SJU made just 63-of-225 of its 3-point attempts (28 percent). The tide seems to have turned lately as the Hawks have converted over 40 percent in four consecutive games ( F o rdham, Richmond, Xavier, Duquesne), with a high of 55.6 percent in the re g u l a r-season finale at Duquesne. 5 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - A-10 TOURNAMENT- PG. 5 SNAP OUT OF IT: Against Fordham, Abdulai Jalloh b roke out of a slump, posting a game-high 23 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the field, 9 - f o r-10 from the foul line and making both 3-point attempts. In the four games prior to Fordham, he was shooting just 14-for-49 (28.5%) from the field and 2-for-22 (9%) from 3-point range. In SJU s 15 wins, Jalloh has scored double figures in 13 of them and is averaging 15.4 points in Hawk victories. ON THE GLASS: SJU outrebounded URI, 29-27, keeping the Rams well below their average of 36.9 rebounds per game. More impre s s i v e l y, the Hawks kept the Rams off the offensive glass, holding them to just seven in the game, while three were in one sequence. The Hawks are 11-3 when they outrebound the opponent, and are coming off a dominating margin vs. Duquesne. In the last five re g u l a r-season games, SJU o u t rebounded its foes by REJECTIONS: Ahmad Nivins has exhibited his tremendous athletic ability many times during the year, and has been racking up the blocked shots lately. The freshman has 18 in the last 11 games coming off the bench, with a high of four against Villanova. He s averaging 1.2 per game on the season. TALE OF TWO HALVES: For a good part of the year, the Hawks had trouble stringing together a solid 40 minutes. This trend was never so evident as in the Villanova and GW games. The Hawks played one of their best halves of the year vs. the Wildcats, jumping out to a lead. The lead didn t last too long after the break, as VU scored 10 straight points and went on a 29-5 run en route to the 13- point victory. It was a similar situation against GW as the Hawks owned a lead at halftime. GW then used 20-0 run to take a lead. The following is a breakdown of the points scored in each half, with victories marked by an *. Game 1st half 2nd half GW Charlotte La Salle* Saint Louis* Penn* Dayton Villanova GW Temple URI* Fordham* Richmond* Xavier* Duquesne* (total) (395) (462) Average LOW POINTS: Phil Martelli was worried about the Hawks ability to score this year and that came to light again at Temple. SJU struggled with the Owls extended zone and took just 40 shots in the game, with eight of them in the final three minutes. The Hawks scored a season-low 44 points, which was the lowest total for SJU under Martelli since it had 42 against Temple on Feb. 17, CHANGING IT UP: Pat Calathes made his second start of the year, replacing Abdulai Jalloh in the lineup at Temple. P h i l M a rt e l l i cited a new look and Jalloh s struggles for the change. Calathes had a teamhigh four assists to go with five points in the loss. Martelli has changed the starters a few times this year, with the most significant being Dave Mallon replacing A h m a d N i v i n s in the 14th game (Charlotte). Mallon started five straight before missing the St. Bonaventure and Villanova contests with a sprained ankle allowing Alvin Mofunanya to get his first career starts. At Rhode Island, the lineup was back to Lee, Jalloh, Stachitas, Mallon and F e rguson, a group which has started 11 of the last 14, and five straight. R U N - D O W N : The Hawks had consecutive games in which Top 10 teams ( Villanova, GW) made double-digit runs in the second half. But they w e re n t the only games this year in which that s happened. Against X a v i e r, the Hawks held a halftime lead but saw XU go on a 15-5 run to eventually take the edge and the win. In another home game against Charlotte, SJU led at the break, but the 49ers o u t s c o red the Hawks, 17-7, to earn the win. ACADEMIC ALL-STAR: Chet Stachitas has been named to ESPN the M a g a z i n e s Academic All-District 2 Team, as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). It marks the second year in a row that Stachitas has earned the honor. He was also chosen to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team for the second year in a ro w. The senior is a marketing major with a 3.24 GPA, and this year was named to Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society. FREEBIES: Abdulai Jalloh has definitely taken advantage of his trips to the foul line. In the last nine games, he has totalled 170 points, but 72 points are from the foul line (42.3 percent). This season, Jalloh has gone to the line a team-high 168 times, an average of 6.2 per game. On the flip side, Rob Ferguson has only gone to the line 36 times, a little more than once a game, and he s an 80.6 percent free throw shooter. FERG S FINEST: Rob Ferg u s o n set a new care e r-high with 22 points on 9 - f o r-13 shooting against St. Bonaventure. It was his second 20-plus point outing of the year, surpassing his previous personal best of 20 points set at Saint Mary s. Phil Mart e l l i cites the game-winning tip-in vs. Temple (Jan. 8) as a huge boost of confidence for Ferguson. Since that game, and in the last 16, he has averaged 11.7 ppg. "The tip-in against Temple took some of the monsters off his shoulders. He's been playing f reer and easier. He's gotten better in practice and there f o re he's playing better basketball. OFF TARGET: Early on this season, Chet Stachitas led the nation in 3-point percentage (63.0%), but experienced a considerable drop through the season and is now at 38.3 percent. After going thru a 5-for-28 slump from Feb. 4-18, Stachitas has regained his stroke, and is hitting 9-for-17 (52.9%) of his long-range shots in the last four games.

SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - A-10 TOURNAMENT- PG. 6 A.J. FOR M.I.P. : Leading score r Abdulai Jalloh has made his case as one of most improved players in the conference, and his play earn e d him All-Conference Second Team honors. He s gone from a re s e rv e player averaging 4.3 ppg last season, to a starter scoring a team-best 14.7 ppg. Jalloh has scored in double figures 16 times, and had the highest output for the Hawks this season with 30 points vs. Ohio State. The freshman responded with a care e r-best eff o rt against the Bonnies, scoring 13 points in a season-high 21 minutes of action. He had 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting and had 4 rebounds. Mofunanya's p revious highs were 2 points, 2 rebounds and 9 minutes. JEKYLL-HYDE: The Hawks have suffered from inconsistency which has prompted Phil Martelli to say, the only thing consistent with this team is that they re inconsistent. Here s a synopsis of the Hawks ups and downs: Game Ups Downs Gonzaga 53.6 FG%; 46.9% 3-pt; 94 pts Xavier made 8 of first 12 shots XU made 12-0 run; 15 turnovers Temple 11 of 17 3-pt FGs in 1st half 6-of-19 3-pt FGs in 2nd half UMass 4-of-25 3-pt FGs; 58 pts GW 70% 3-pt FGs in 2nd half season-low 9% 3-pt in 1st half Charlotte 7-pt halftime lead 9-minute scoring drought (2nd) La Salle 50 pts scored; 50% FG in 2nd half 3 field goals in 1st half (3-for-21) SLU 55% in 1st; halftime lead 20 pts in 2nd half Penn FT in 2nd half 13 1/2 minutes w/o FG (2nd) Dayton within 3 points at halftime allows UD to shoot 55% in 2nd Villanova 50% FG; halftime lead 24 points; 25% shooting GW halftime lead allows GW a 20-0 run Temple holds TU to 37% FG and 57 pts has 19 turnovers, 23% from 3-pt KEEPING THEM DOWN: Senior Dave Mallon has earned praise from Phil Martelli for the defensive job he s done and calls him the team s anchor and best communicator on defense. His most noteworthy performance was limiting Saint Louis Ian Vouyoukas to 5 points, but only one field goal. Vouyoukas only took one shot, and that came with three minutes left in the game. Here s a rundown of what Mallon s done vs. the opponents top players: Charlotte - Curtis Withers (16.3 avg)- 13 pts; 4 in 2nd half La Salle- Steven Smith (19.6 avg) - 17 pts; 4-14 FG Saint Louis - Ian Vouyoukas (14.4 avg) - 5 pts; only 1 FG attempt BENCHMARKS: Phil Mart e l l i s rotation is generally seven players deep, with Ahmad Nivins and Pat Calathes being the only ones to see significant minutes. Nivins is averaging 23.6 minutes per game while Calathes logs Three Hawks are averaging over 30 minutes per game - Dwayne Lee, Chet Stachitas, Abdulai Jalloh - while Rob Ferguson is at 29.6 per contest. 7 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - A-10 TOURNAMENT - PG. 7 DRY SPELLS: Maybe it was in direct relation to the unseasonably warm weather, but drought warnings should have been issued in some games. A look at these stretches follows: La Salle Charlotte Penn Villanova GW Temple Time w/o a field goal 7 minutes (1st half) 9 minutes (2nd half) 13 1/2 minutes (2nd half) 6 minutes (2nd half) 6 minutes (2nd half) 8 minutes (1st half) CONFERENCE CALL: SJU is averaging 65.9 points per game overall and 63.1 in conference games. In league games, the Hawks are shooting 42.3 percent from the field and allowing the opponents to shoot Abdulai Jalloh leads the Hawks in scoring with 13.9 ppg, followed by Chet Stachitas with GIVE HIM THE BALL: Rob Ferguson is one of the few Hawks who has shown consistency in his shooting, as evidenced by his 51.9 FG pct., but the sophomore only averages 7.9 shots per game. At Bucknell, Ferguson was 2-for-2, but at Saint Mary s he took 14 shots en route to a career-high 20 points. He was 9-for-13 en route to his career-high of 22 points vs. St. Bonaventure. FOUL PLAY: One thing that has hindered the Hawks has been the number of personal fouls. SJU has 17 disqualifications in 27 games - - last season, they had a total of 11 in 36 games. Abdulai Jalloh and A h m a d N i v i n s have fouled out four times, Rob Ferguson t h ree times, and Dwayne Lee and Chet Stachitas have each fouled out twice. UP AND DOWN: The Hawks offensive production has been like a ro l l e r- coaster ride. They ve scored 90 or more points twice this year (Gonzaga, Davidson), but have also been held in the 50-point range eight times (URI Villanova, Saint Louis, Charlotte, UMass, Temple, Xavier, Bucknell). The Hawks had 47 points in the win at Penn, but had only 44 points in a loss to Temple. The team s scoring average is THE SET-UP MAN: Dwayne Lee led the Atlantic 10 in assists last season and currently ranks third with his 4.59 average. If Lee were to finish this season atop the rankings, he would become only the second player in conference history to lead the league in assists for two consecutive years. The other player to do that was Lee s mentor, Hawk great Jameer Nelson. Lee has 354 in his care e r. ON BOARD: The Hawks are rebounding by committee with no dominant player on the boards. Guard Abdulai Jalloh leads the team with 5.3 followed by Ahmad Nivins with 5.2. SJU s rebounding margin is +2.1, and the Hawks rank first in the A-10 in rebounding defense, allowing their foes just 30.3 boards per game. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: The Hawks have faced a challenging schedule this year, meeting seven teams which reached the 2005 NCAA To u rnament. And when looking at ESPN s early-season predictions, SJU had 10 NCAA teams on the slate with 12 games against ESPN's preseason NCAA To u rnament bracket: Davidson, Kansas, Ohio State. Bucknell, Gonzaga, Xavier (twice), George Washington (twice), Charlotte, Pennsylvania and Villanova. SJU went thru an early-season eight-game stretch in which it faced seven of those teams. SENIOR SPA R K : Dave Mallon has started 13 games and played the role of the sixth man for the previous 12. The senior has provided a spark, and is averaging 21 minutes per game. Phil Mart e l l i made a lineup change on Jan. 17, inserting Mallon back into the starting five against Charlotte (in place of Ahmad Nivins), and since then, he s only missed two starts because of a sprained ankle. Some of his highlights: season-high 13 points at Davidson - game-tying 3-pt FG at the buzzer 6 points vs. Drexel - 4 straight to keep SJU s lead at double digits 9 points vs. Temple, including all of the points in a 7-0 run that bro u g h t SJU back from a six-point deficit held Saint Louis leading scorer Ian Vouyoukas to just one field goal 12 pts on 6-for-8 shooting in second game with GW care e r-high 9 rebounds at Te m p l e FILLING THE VOID: For the second consecutive season, head coach Phil Martelli had to replace an Atlantic 10 Player of the Year (Pat Carroll) and a player who left early to pursue a career in the NBA (Dwayne Jones). With their departures, the Hawks also lost over 2,000 points and 1,110 rebounds. Carroll was named the conference s Co-Player of the Year and an AP Honorable Mention All- America. Dwayne Jones, an All-A-10 selection and Defensive Player of the Year, left early to sign with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The previous year, Jameer Nelson captured national and conference player of the year honors and was a first-round NBA Draft pick along with Delonte West. THREE FOR ALL: SJU owns a streak of 387 straight games with at least one 3-pointer made, a string which began at the start of the season. Although they came very close to ending the streak against GW (2/11) with just one 3-pointer, the last game in which a Hawks team did not hit a three was at Southwest Missouri State on Mar. 18, OUT OF ACTION: Junior forward Arvydas Lidzius has not participated in games this year and is redshirting the season. Jordan Fowler is currently dealing with institutional academic issues and will not participate the rest of the year. CLASS ACT: Fourth-year seniors Dwayne Lee, Dave Mallon and Chet Stachitas have had a great deal of success thus far on Hawk Hill, and will be striving to take their place among the best four-year classes in school history. The trio has now compiled a record (73.6 win. pct.) in their four years to date. The school record is set by Jameer Nelson and Tyrone Barley, while last year s duo of Pat Carroll and John Bryant compiled a mark. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Coaching certainly runs in the Martelli blood as the head coach s two sons are currently working the sidelines. Oldest son Philip, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Manhattan College. Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is assisting at his alma mater. JERSEY GUYS: Starting point guard Dwayne Lee welcomes fellow St. Anthony graduate Ahmad Nivins into the starting lineup. The duo both played for the scholastic power and are among those featured in the book, The Miracle of St. Anthony.

SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - A-10 TOURNAMENT - PG. 8 SIGN THEM UP: Phil Martelli locked up another strong recruiting class as four scholastic standouts signed national letters of intent to attend SJU in the fall of The class is one of seven from the Atlantic 10 to be ranked among the nation s top 50 by Hoop Scoop. H AWKS IN THE PROS: Saint Joseph s is currently re p resented in the NBA by 2004 first-round picks Jameer Nelson of Orlando and Delonte West of Boston. Also, last year s A-10 Defensive Player of the Ye a r Dwayne Jones started out his year in the NBDL for the Florida Flame, was called up to the Minnesota Ti m b e rwolves and then on Jan. 27, was traded, joining West in Boston. CRADLE OF COACHES: The Saint Joseph s coaching connection is an impressive one. A total of seven Saint Joseph s graduates have gone on to become head coaches in the NBA, and SJU is now tied with Illinois for second on the list of universities with alums that have served as NBA head coaches. Indiana tops the list with 11 graduates that have coached in the league. Below is the list of former Hawks who have been NBA head coaches. Player (Class) NBA Teams W-L (yrs.) Boyle played for Hall of Famer Dr. Jack Ramsay and served as an assistant coach on the staffs of Jack M c K i n n e y, Harry Booth and Jim Lynam. Boyle also worked with John G r i ffin, when they were assistants to Lynam. Then during his tenure as head coach, Boyle hired current SJU mentor Phil Martelli as an assistant coach in The Hawks will be wearing a black patch with his nickname, Bo, for the rest of the season, to honor Boyle s memory. MUST-SEE TV: It s hard to believe, but the most unique coaches show in the nation - Phil Martelli s HawkTalk - celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. Called the nation s best coach s show by The Sporting News in 2001, Martelli hosts the unscripted show in a Tonight Show setting with a variety of guests. CHAMPIONS FOR A CAUSE: Phil Mart e l l i s passion extends to his work in the community and his eff o rts with Coaches vs. Cancer are tireless. Martelli and the five other Division I coaches in the city (Drexel, La Salle, Penn, Temple, Villanova) comprise the Philadelphia Coaches vs. Cancer group, which has become the most successful group in the nation. The six coaches raised over $500,000 last year to fight the disease, while setting a goal of $1 million for this year. The group was hono red with the Coaches vs. Cancer Champion Aw a rd by the NABC at the 2004 NCAA Final Four. One of the main events for Coaches vs. Cancer this year will be the second annual BasketBall, a black-tie event at the Park Hyatt on April 29. RACKING THEM UP: SJU ranks 15th among Division I basketball programs for average amount of wins over the last five years, compiling a record (75.3 pct), averaging 24.4 victories per year. Including this season s record, that number is now (72.4) in six years, an average of 22.8 per season. PHILLY S FINEST: The Hawk mascot was featured in Philadelphia Magazine s Who s the Greatest? issue, pitting all-time city icons vs. each other in a poll. The Hawk lost to the Phillie Phanatic for the greatest mascot, by an 80 percent to 13 percent margin. A-10 EXPANSION: The Atlantic 10 Conference expanded to 14 teams this year with the addition of Charlotte and Saint Louis. The league has abandoned the two-division format and is a one, 14- team entity. The A-10 now encompasses eight states and the District of Columbia, and places the conference in 12 of the top 59 media markets in the country. HUGE LOSS: The Saint Joseph s basketball family lost a key member when former coach and player Jim Boyle passed away on December 23, 2005 after a battle with lung cancer. Boyle, 63, served as head coach of the Hawks from 1981 to 1990, compiling a re c o rd in nine seasons. Bo led the Hawks to post-season play four times, with two trips to the NCAA To u rnament and two to the NIT. His victory total is the f o u rth best in school history. Boyle had the unique distinction of being a part of Hawk history as a player, an assistant coach and head coach. He had a connection with all of the SJU coaches from the past four

SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - A-10 TOURNAMENT - PG. 11 SEASON OF CELEBRATIONS The season is a special one for Saint Joseph s and Philadelphia basketball. It marks the 50th anniversary of the Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot and also the golden anniversary of the Philadelphia Big 5. THE HAWK The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for almost half a century, and celebrates its golden anniversary in One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the season. Brennan, an ex-marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for three years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figu re eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap-o-meter on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to e v e ry game, and the student who holds the position gains a full scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semester, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. A n d rew Moral is this year s Hawk mascot, and the 29th student to wear the wings. He is a senior elementary education major from North Wales, PA. THE BIG 5 The Philadelphia Big 5 was born on November 23, 1954, when administrators at the five major Universities in the city f o rmulated a partnership. They agreed to participate in a men s basketball round robin- the City Series - at the Palestra on Pennsylvania s campus. For 50 years, the rivalries and comraderie have made this one of the most intense and unique arrangements in college sports. The first Big 5 game was played on December 14, 1955, with Saint Joseph s defeating Villanova, The anniversary will be commemorated this season with a number of events, with one of the feature games being the nationally-televised Saint Joseph s - Villanova matchup on February 7. ON THE AIR RADIO: All Hawk games are broadcast on SportsTalk 950 (WPEN-AM) with the Saint Joseph s Sports Network team of Tom McCarthy and Joe Lunardi providing play-by-play and color commentary, respectively. The broadcast of Saint Joseph s basketball can also be heard via the internet at McCarthy, in his third year with SJSN, has just been named the play-byplay announcer for the New York Mets radio broadcasts, after three years with the Philadelphia Phillies. Lunardi, in his 16th year on the Hawks radio broadcasts, is the Assistant Vice President for University Communications at the Saint Joseph s, and is a college basketball analyst for ESPN. Broadcasts can also be accessed by Teamline, calling (access code 4280). HAWKTALK : Phil Martelli s HawkTalk celebrates its 10th anniversary in The most unique coach s television show in college basketball, it was named the Best Coach s Show in the Nation by The Sporting News. Martelli s show combines a Tonight Show format with unique guests and just a few basketball highlights. The show airs on Thursday nights on Comcast SportsNet. INTERNET: Information for Saint Joseph s basketball is found at SJU s athletics website, Game notes, live in-game statistics for all Hawk home games, and selected road games, and streaming audio of every radio broadcast can be accessed at the site.
