2 panther notes...add one PITTSBURGH HEAD COACH Traci Waites is in her fourth season as head coach at Pittsburgh where she has compiled a overall record. In , Waites orchestrated the biggest one-year turnaround in the program s history as Pittsburgh posted a record, doubling it s win total from the prior season. In addition, Waites earned Big East Co-Coach of the Year honors after leading Pittsburgh to a sixth-place finish in the league, a vast improvement from its 12th-place finish the year before. Moreover, the Panthers were chosen to compete in the Women s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), marking their first postseason berth in six years. Waites joined the Panthers after serving four seasons at the University of Arizona as an assistant coach, including the last two as associate head coach. While there, Waites was instrumental in the Wildcats emergence as a Top 10 program, helping them to three straight 20-win seasons and two NCAA Tournament berths. Prior to Arizona, Waites was the head coach at Santa Monica Community College in Santa Monica, Calif., from after serving the program as an assistant for three years. During her tenure, Waites teams finished second in the Western States Conference and qualified for the state playoffs each year. Waites enjoyed an outstanding collegiate playing career, first at Georgia and then at Long Beach State. She played in the NCAA Tournament each of her four seasons and went to two Final Fours. She holds the distinction of being the only player to appear in the Final Four for two different teams. BUCKNELL HEAD COACH Kathy Fedorjaka is in her fifth season as head coach of the Bison and owns a record of for Bucknell. Fedorjaka has a nineyear overall coaching record of Fedorjaka came to Bucknell in August of 1997 and led the Bison to a overall record in her first year as a head coach at the Division I level. She was voted the Patriot League Coach-of-the-Year. A 1990 graduate of Fairfield University, Fedorjaka s arrived at Bucknell after a three-year stint as head coach at Bloomsburg University. At Bloomsburg, Fedorjaka amassed a record, and directed her team to the school s first Division II NCAA Tournament appearance in five years. Fedorjaka s collegiate coaching experience began at Bucknell when she arrived in Lewisburg as a graduate assistant with the women s basketball program in PANTHERS IN THE FIELD HOUSE The Panthers hold an all-time record of at Fitzgerald Field House. Their best season came in when the Panthers went a perfect 10-0, finishing with an overall record of Last year, Pittsburgh held a 7-6 record at home compared to a 2-12 mark on the road. PITTSBURGH VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE Pittsburgh owns a 3-1 all-time record against teams from the Patriot League. Tuesday s contest marks the first of two consecutive games against Patriot League foes as the Panthers host American University on Nov. 24 at Fitzgerald Field House. Pittsburgh has never played Bucknell, but owns a 2-1 advantage over American and a 1-0 mark versus Lafayette. The Panthers have never played fellow Patriot League members Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lehigh or Navy. SCOUTING THE BISON Bucknell returns all five starters from last year s impressive 20-8 mark, including a 9-3 secondplace record in the Patriot League. The Bison opened the season with a convincing victory over Albany on Nov. 16. Bucknell is led by 5-10 junior guard Molly Creamer, who finished last year averaging 19 points and five assists per contest. In Bucknell s season-opening victory over Albany, Creamer picked up where she left off last season and tallied a game-best 26 points, six rebounds and five assists. SCRAPING THE GLASS Despite a season-opening setback, Pittsburgh was able to control the boards. For the contest, the Panthers snared 42 rebounds, including 19 offensive, compared to William & Mary s 39 boards. EXHIBITION PLAY For the second straight year, Pittsburgh completed its exhibition slate with a perfect 2-0 record. The Panthers defeated PWBA, 98-78, on Nov. 1 and beat M.I. Express, , on Nov. 9. For the two games, Pittsburgh averaged 99 points and shot 54 percent from the field. The Panthers also outrebounded its opponents by an average of CHARTING THE OPPOSITION Five of Pittsburgh s opponents are currently ranked in either the USA Today/ESPN Coaches or the Associated Press Top 25 poll, including three from the Big East Conference. Additionally, six more opponents are receiving votes in the poll. Last year, the Panthers were 0-6 versus ranked opponents. 3 panther notes...add two UP FOR THE CHALLENGE The Panthers will be playing 13 of its games at Fitzgerald Field House for the third year in a row. Last season, Pittsburgh was 7-6 in the confines of the Field House. Pittsburgh plays a 27-game slate which includes nine teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, including defending national champion Notre Dame, and three teams that reached the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The schedule also features nine teams that reached the 20-win plateau in FAMILIAR FACES Pittsburgh returns eight letterwinners from last year s squad, including its top four scorers. Seniors Bettina Love, Jackie Campbell and Jessica Ryndycz, juniors Mandy Wittenmyer, Laine Selwyn, Dallas Williams and Brooke Stewart and sophomore Sheila Stufflet all had major impacts on the campaign. Wittenmyer (12.4 points per game), Selwyn (11.4), Stewart (10.3) and Love (7.2) return to add the offensive punch for the Panthers. The Panthers averaged 8.19 steals per game, which ranked eighth in the Big East. Laine Selwyn led the way, ripping away 1.96 per game to place her 10th in the league. PITTSBURGH PLAYER NOTES DAZZLING DALLAS Junior Dallas Williams, who started just four games last season, was inserted into the starting lineup against William & Mary and produced for the Panthers in a major way. Williams connected on an astounding 7-of-8 shots from the field and 7-of-9 free throws for a career-high 21 points. Williams previous career-best scoring output was 13 against Duquesne on Jan. 1, Her seven made field goals were also a career high. SELWYN S SWAGGER Despite its season-opening setback to William & Mary, Pittsburgh s Laine Selwyn did her part in dishing out the rock and using her quickness to get it back. Selwyn finished with team-bests of six assists and four steals. Last year, Selwyn paced the Blue and Gold in both categories. LEADING THE WAY Junior Mandy Wittenmyer has continued to establish herself as one of Pittsburgh s and the Big East s top young stars in her first two seasons. In each of her first two seasons, Wittenmyer has paced the Panthers in both scoring and rebounding. Last year, she averaged career bests with 12.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, topping her Big East All-Rookie team numbers of 12.1 points and 7.8 boards per game as a freshman. Currently, Wittenmyer is 16th (tied) on Pittsburgh s career rebound leaders list with 449, following her 13-board output in Pittsburgh s season opener, and is on pace to crack the top 8 by season s end. She finished last season second in the conference in rebounding behind Big East Rookie of the Year Rebekkah Brunson of Georgetown. 4 panther notes...add three MANDY S MACHINE Mandy Wittenmyer has solidified her name in Pittsburgh s all-time career field goal percentage list with an average of.490, good enough for fourth place. Randolph Kim Gannis Latia Howard Debbie Lewis FLORIDA S FINEST Junior Laine Selwyn, a native of Coral Springs, Fla., now has a year under her belt in running the Pittsburgh offense. Inserted into the starting point guard role as a sophomore, Selwyn started all but two games last year and paced the squad with 4.6 assists per contest. She also was second on the squad in points, totaling 11.4 points per game while draining just under 40 percent of her shots. Selwyn finished the campaign with a career-high 125 assists, which ranked sixth in the conference (4.63 assists/game) and was the 10th-best in Pittsburgh history. She currently sits in 16th place on Pittsburgh s career assists list with 214. DRAINING THE 3 Laine Selwyn has proven to be one of Pittsburgh s most-accurate three-point shooters. In her first two-plus seasons as a Panther, the sharp-shooting left-hander has connected on 32 percent of her shots behind the arc (56 of 172). Selwyn currently ranks eighth on Pittsburgh s career 3-point field goal percentage list. Stewart finished fourth in the Big East in 3-point field goals (2.15 per game) and sixth in 3-point field goal percentage (.287). Stewart now has a career percentage of.304 and has drained 109 career 3-point field goals. SHEILA STRUTS HER STUFF This past summer, sophomore Sheila Stufflet was chosen to represent Pittsburgh on the 2001 Big East Women s Basketball All-Star team that toured Germany. Stufflet averaged 7.8 points and 3.8 rebounds for the team that went a perfect 6-0. BRODERICK PROMOTED Head Coach Traci Waites has promoted former assistant coach Bill Broderick to associate head coach. Broderick is entering his fourth year as a member of the Panther staff. He worked with Waites at Arizona for three seasons and accompanied her to Pittsburgh prior to the year. A 1993 graduate of Frostburg State, Broderick was an assistant coach at both his alma mater and at Potomac State College before joining Waites in Arizona. WAITES RE-TOOLS STAFF Deborah Perry and Lisa Scott have been appointed assistant coaches for the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team, head coach Traci Waites announced. Perry, who most recently was a member of the University at Buffalo women's basketball staff, brings extensive coaching experience to the Panther squad and will focus primarily on recruiting. Prior to working with the Bulls for the past three years, Perry spent two seasons ( ) as the head coach and senior women's adminstrator at West Virginia State College. Perry also served as an assistant coach at Ohio University for four years ( ) and at Southern University & A&M College for three seasons ( ). Earning her bachelor's degree in industrial technology from South Carolina State, Perry is a member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Scott, a former student-athlete under Waites at the University of Arizona, begins her first campaign as an assistant basketball coach and will focus on tutoring the Panther guards. A four-year letterwinner for the Wildcats, Scott earned honorable mention All-Pac 10 and finished her career tied for first on Arizona's all-time list for games played (112). Scott additionally finished as the Arizona and Pac-10 career leader in three-pointers made (285). Her 1,199 career points ranks among the top 20 all-time at Arizona. Scott made four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and one appearance in the Sweet 16 as a member of the Wildcat basketball squad. She graduated in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in communications. Additionally, Waites appointed Ron Wuotila director of operations for women's basketball. Wuotila comes to Pittsburgh with an extensive basketball background, following the completion of his master's degree in physical education/athletic administration from Idaho State University in He came to the Panthers after a nine-month stint as director of men's basketball operations at Robert Morris College where he coordinated the Tip-Off Social, with guest speaker Digger Phelps, which raised $17,000 and was involved in scheduling and public relations duties. Wuotila has an impressive head coaching resume that includes being named the Canadian College Athletic Association Men's Basketball Coach of the Year in while at Mount Royal College (Canada). Wuotila guided the Mount Royal men's squad to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) championship in , marking the first time the school won its conference in 17 years. He was also awarded ACAC Basketball Coach of the Year in (men's) and in (women's).

Williams tallied 21 points while shooting 7-for-8 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free throw line. Pittsburgh opened up advantage in the first half with just 5:53 remaining. However, the Tribe climbed back with a 12-5 run to end the half and knot the score at Both teams shot 45 percent from the field in the first half and the Panthers held a narrow advantage on the board. Williams finished the half with 11 points. In the second stanza, Pittsburgh went cold from the field, not recording its first point until the 15:12 mark on a Laine Selwyn free throw. William & Mary embarked on a 20-8 run to take the lead with 10:38 remaining in the contest. Pittsburgh crept to within two points, 72-70, with just under a minute to play, but the Tribe responded with clutch free throws to seal the victory. For the game, Pittsburgh shot 40 percent from the field compared to William & Mary s 48 percent. The Panthers outrebounded the Tribe and both teams registered eight steals. Junior Mandy Wittenmyer had 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for Pittsburgh, while Selwyn added 15 points and six assists in 30 minutes.
