The Broncos (10-2) and Bears (6-6) are slated to kick at 8:15 p.m. at Chase Field, home of Major League Baseball s Arizona Diamondbacks, and the game will be nationally televised by ESPN. The Broncos are making their 15thconsecutive bowl appearance, a streak that ranks tied for sixth nationally. The 2016 Boise State football campaign marks the 30th anniversary of the world-famous Blue Turf at Albertsons Stadium. Boise State installed the first nongreen field for the 1986 season, and since that time is a combined on The Blue, a winning percentage of.826. Since 2000, Boise State has gone at home (.944), the nation s best home winning percentage during that time. 1

THE BIG 12: Boise State is 2-0 against the Big 12, with each victory coming in a bowl game. The Broncos defeated Iowa State (34-16) in the 2002 Humanitarian Bowl, Dec. 31, 2002, the school s first victory over what has become known as a Power Five opponent. Boise State s second win came in the school s most-famous victory, a overtime victory in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, Jan. 1, EXORCISING DEMONS: Boise State lost four games last season, and all four teams were back on the schedule for The Road to Redemption began Oct. 1 against Utah State, and continued against New Mexico (Oct. 7) and BYU (Oct. 20). The Broncos avenged the first three losses, but dropped its regular-season finale to Air Force (27-20). SENIOR SUCCESS: Each of the last 14 Boise State senior classes have won at least 40 games during their careers, or an average of 10 victories per season. The 2016 class, currently sitting on 39-career victories, will need to win the 2016 Motel 6 Cactus Bowl to make it 15-straight senior classes, having won eight games in 2013, 12 in 2014 and nine last season. NON-SATURDAY GAMES: Boise State s Tuesday (Dec. 27) contest against Baylor in the Motel 6 Cactus Bowl will mark the team s sixth non-saturday game of the season. The Broncos are all-time in non- Saturday games, including a mark of 8-5 in bowl games. Boise State has previously played on Tuesday five times, including four bowl games. The Broncos are 3-2 overall on Tuesday, including a mark of 2-2 in bowl games. AVOIDING BACK-TO-BACK LOSSES: Boise State, which dropped its regular-season finale, has lost back-to-back games in the same season just once in the last nine years, though the occurrence came last season (New Mexico and Air Force). 3 BRONCOS IN THE POLLS ASSOCIATED PRESS POLL AMWAY COACHES POLL ONE OF THE VOTERS: Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin is one of 64 voters in the 2016 Amway Coaches Poll. 15 YEARS IN THE RANKINGS: When Boise State cracked the polls entering week five of the 2016 season, it marked the 15thconsecutive season ( ; AP) that Boise State had been ranked for at least one week. The streak is tied with USC for the eighthlongest in the country. The nation s 10-longest streaks can be found on page 18. MOVIN ON UP: The Broncos ranking of No. 13 in both the Associated Press and Coaches Polls prior to the loss to Wyoming was the highest since concluding 2011 ranked eighth and sixth, respectively. PRESEASON RANKINGS: Boise State did not open the 2016 season ranked in either the AP or Coaches Polls. However, historically, that seems to bode well for the Broncos. Over the course of the previous 14 seasons, Boise State did not open the season ranked in the preseason polls on six occasions. Each year , 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and the Broncos finished ranked in the top 25. In two of those seasons (2006 and 2014), the Broncos capped their season with wins in the Fiesta Bowl. 5 MOUNT RUSHMORE MOUNTAIN WEST STANDINGS BOWL GAMES The following is Boise State s Mount Rushmore of bowl games, the greatest such games in Boise State football history: Boise State 43, Oklahoma 42 Tostito s Fiesta Bowl - Jan. 1, 2007 Really, how can a Mt. Rushmore of Boise State bowl games not begin with what many have called one of the greatest games in college football history? Boise State lets a lead slip away into a deficit, faces 4th-and-18 from midfield with 18 seconds left, and the stage is set for the unforgettable. Jared Zabransky-to-Drisan James-to-Jerard Rabb on the Hook-and-Lateral ties the game at and sends it to overtime, where Oklahoma scores first. Boise State, facing 4th-and-2 from the five calls the Halfback Pass and Vinny Perretta hits Derek Schouman for the touchdown. Boise State decides to go for the win, pulls off the Statue of Liberty as Ian Johnson cashes in the winning two-point conversion, gets the girl, and the Broncos post a win for the ages. Boise State 17, TCU 10 Tostito s Fiesta Bowl Jan. 4, 2010 Boise State became just the second college football team to go 14-0 as it completed its unbeaten campaign with a Fiesta Bowl win over No. 3 TCU. Brandyn Thompson opened the scoring with a 51-yard interception return for a touchdown off of TCU quarterback Andy Dalton, and Boise State took an early 10-0 lead. TCU battled back to tie it up, and the teams were stalemated until the Broncos once again reached into their bag of tricks. Facing 4th-and-9 from their own 33 and 9:47 to play, Boise State lined up to punt. TCU was caught off-guard as punter Kyle Brotzman took the direct snap and hit a wide-open Kyle Efaw for 30 yards, pulling of what has become known as The Riddler. Four plays later, the Broncos scored what would be the winning touchdown as Doug Martin dove over the line from two yards out. Boise State 38, Arizona 30 VIZIO Fiesta Bowl Dec. 31, 2014 Boise State s third Fiesta Bowl title, and first under current head coach Bryan Harsin, followed many of the same plot points as the program s first trip six years earlier. Jump out to a big, early lead? Check (21-0 in the first quarter). Successfully pull of Statue Left? Yessir. Jay Ajayi went 16 yards for a score. Return an interception for a touchdown? Check. Donte Deayon with the 16-yard pick-six to provide the final Bronco points in the third quarter. This time, the Broncos got one final defensive stand to clinch the win, as Kamalei Correa sacked Arizona quarterback Anu Solomon at the Bronco 10-yard line on the final play of the game. Boise State 56, Arizona State 24 MAACO Bowl Las Vegas - Dec. 22, 2011 Boise State entered the matchup with Arizona State at 11-1, its only loss of the year derailing what could have been another BCS bowl. But the Broncos did not mail this one in. Instead, in the swan song for its greatest four-year class, a group led by quarterback Kellen Moore that would go 50-3 from , the Broncos laid waste to the Sun Devils from the opening kick which was taken back 100 yards for a touchdown by Doug Martin. The Broncos jumped out to a 21-0 lead and poured it on, upping the advantage to before Arizona State scored its first offensive touchdown. Jamar Taylor picked off Brock Osweiler and took it 100 yards to the house, Travis Stanaway returned a fumble 26 yards for a score, and Martin capped off a 151-yard rushing day with a two-yard score to provide the final points in Boise State s highest-scoring bowl performance in its history. Harsin, who is 31-8 entering the Dec. 27 contest against Baylor, led the Broncos to a record of 12-2 in his debut season, which included the school s first outright Mountain West Championship since joining the league in 2011 and the school s third victory in the Fiesta Bowl. For his efforts in year one, Harsin was named a finalist for the Paul Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year Award, the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award and the Dodd Trophy, given annually by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. In year two, the Broncos went 9-4 and defeated Northern Illinois 55-7 in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. And for the second-straight season, Harsin was named a midseason finalist for the Dodd Trophy, the only one from a non-resource Five school. HARSIN A COACH OF THE YEAR CANDIDATE: Head coach Bryan Harsin was recognized for his part in getting the Broncos off to a 9-1 start and national ranking in 2016, as he was named to the Paul Bear Bryant Coach of the Year award watch list on Oct. 19, and to the Dodd Trophy midseason list on Oct. 31. It marks the third-straight season in which Harsin has been named a candidate for the Dodd Trophy. COACHING CHANGES: The Broncos have a different offensive coordinator for the fourth time in as many seasons, but this time around, multiple people will handle the responsibilities. Offensive line coach Scott Huff and quarterbacks coach Zak Hill will serve as co-offensive coordinators, and head coach Bryan Harsin will call the plays. The Broncos also have a new defensive coordinator, as linebackers coach Andy Avalos takes over the defense in Hill is entering his first season with the Broncos, as are defensive backs/cornerbacks coach Ashley Ambrose and safeties coach Gabe Franklin. Hill spent the last seven seasons at Eastern Washington, where he helped lead the Eagles to the 2010 FCS National Championship. Ambrose, a former All-Pro cornerback in the NFL, was at Texas State in Franklin, a three-time all-league honoree for Boise State, spent the last five seasons at UTEP. AGAINST THE BIG 12: Dec. 27 s Cactus Bowl will mark Boise State s third game all-time against a Big 12 program, with all three coming in bowl games. Boise State defeated Iowa State, 34-16, in the Crucial.com Humanitarian Bowl on Dec. 31, 2002, and beat Oklahoma, in overtime, in the 2007 Tostito s Fiesta Bowl. BOISE STATE S BOWL STREAK AMONG BEST IN THE COUNTRY: Boise State s visit to the Cactus Bowl will be the 15th-consecutive bowl appearance for the Broncos, a streak which is tops among Group of Five schools and one which is surpassed by only five Power Five schools. Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech will each play in their 16th-straight bowl game this year. BRONCOS BACK TO 10 WINS: Nov. 18 s victory over UNLV improved Boise State to 10-1 on the season, the Broncos 14th 10-win season since joining Division I-A (now FBS) in It is also Boise State s second 10-win season over the past three years, along with a 12-2 finish in The Broncos had a run of seven-straight 10-win seasons, highlighted by undefeated campaigns in 2006 (13-0) and 2009 (14-0), from BOISE STATE HAS 15 EARN ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST HONORS: Boise State had 15 members of the team earn All-Mountain West honors when the all-conference teams were announced Nov. 29. Quarterback Brett Rypien and wide receiver Thomas Sperbeck each earned their second-straight nod to the All-Mountain West First Team, and were joined by first-timers offensive linemen Travis Averill and Mario Yakoo, defensive end Sam McCaskill and nose tackle David Moa. Last year, the Broncos were defeated, 31-24, by New Mexico on Nov. 14, and followed that with a loss to Air Force six days later, with both losses coming at Albertsons Stadium. Those back-to-back losses were the first for Boise State since dropping the final two games of the 2007 season (Nov. 23 at Hawai i and Dec. 23 against East Carolina). Boise State never lost consecutive conference games while a member of the WAC ( ). As a member of the Big West from , the Broncos had a three-game losing streak (Oct. 12, Oct. 19, Nov. 9, 1996) and twice lost two in a row (Nov. 1 and 8, 1997; Nov. 21, 1998 and Oct. 16, 1999). ALL GOOD THINGS : This year s Boise State team set the program s FBS-era (1996-present) record for longest season-opening stretch without trailing, passing the 2009 team s previous mark of 306:35 in Oct. 15 s game against Colorado State. However, Colorado State s game-opening field goal with 7:24 left in the opening quarter ended Boise State s status as the last FBS team to have not trailed in 2016, and ended the season-opening run at 307:36. It was just the second time in school history that the Broncos had not trailed at any point through the season s first five games, and like the 2009 team, it was the sixth game of the season in which the run was snapped. The 2009 team s run was broken when Tulsa scored 6:35 into the sixth game of the season to go up 7-0. As noted above, Boise State had been the last FBS team in 2016 to trail in a contest. The Broncos had been tied twice during that span (7-7 against both Oregon State and Utah State). CONFERENCE RECORD: Since 2000, Boise State is a national-best (.893) in conference play. Since joining the FBS in 1996, the Broncos have played in three leagues: the Big West ( ), WAC ( ) and Mountain West (2011-Present). Over the campaigns in those three conferences, the Broncos have posted an all-time record of (.841). Boise State went 5-3 in Mountain West play in 2015, just the second time since when Boise State went 2-3 in the Big West - that the Broncos lost three conference contests in a season. It was also just the fourth time since Boise State s first year in the WAC - that the Broncos lost multiple conference games (also went 6-2 in WAC play in 2001). CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Broncos have played in four conferences all time, and have won multiple conference championships in each: six in the Big Sky ( ), two in the Big West ( ), eight in the WAC ( ) and two in the MW (2011-Present). MW SUCCESS: Since joining the Mountain West for the 2011 season, Boise State has lost just 10 conference games, with only two of those nine losses being by more than seven points. Outside of a loss to Air Force (Sept. 27) in 2014 and a loss at Utah State (Oct. 16) in 2015, the Broncos other eight Mountain West losses have come by a combined 30 points. Boise State s four Mountain West losses from were by a combined seven points: TCU in 2011 (36-35); San Diego State in 2012 (21-19); Fresno State (41-40) and SDSU (34-31, OT) in Among current Mountain West teams, only Air Force (3-2) boasts a winning record over Boise State. AGAINST THE POWER FIVE: Boise State s Cactus Bowl matchup with Baylor will be the Broncos third this year against a Power Five program. The Broncos are 2-0 in its matchups with the Power Five in 2016, defeating Washington State (31-28) and Oregon State (38-24) on Sept. 10 and Sept. 24, respectively, and with a win over Baylor could go 3-0 against the Power Five in a single season for the first time. 9

Since notching its first victory over a Power Five school, a win over Iowa State in the 2002 Humanitarian Bowl, Boise State is 16-9 all-time in games against Power Five teams, and overall. PAC-12 SUCCESS: Boise State s win at Oregon State (Sept. 24), combined with Sept. 10 s win over Washington State, improved the Broncos to 2-0 against the Pac-12 this season. While Boise State is overall against the Pac- 12, the Broncos are 11-5 against the Power Five conference since 2004 and are currently on a four-game winning streak dating back to the 2014 VIZIO Fiesta Bowl victory over Arizona. AMONG THE GREATEST: Boise State is the third-best all-time winning percentage amongst the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Broncos all-time record at the fouryear level entering the Cactus Bowl is (.724). Michigan is first on the all-time list ( ;.731) with Notre Dame second ( ;.728). For the complete top 15, see page four. ESTABLISHING A LEGACY: The Broncos are the winningest football program in the country since 2000, with an overall record of (.845). Ohio State (181-38;.826), Oklahoma (182-43;.809), LSU (166-52;.761) and TCU (159-54;.746) round out the top five. For the complete top 15, see page four. OUT OF THE NORM: The Broncos went 9-4 in 2015, missing double-digit victories for just the second time in the last decade. Boise State has won 10-or-more games in 13 of the last 17 seasons, including 12-or-more in six of the last 10. BOWLING AGAIN: Boise State made its 14th-straight bowl appearance and the 16th over the last 17 years in 2015, and with Oct. 15 s victory over Colorado State became eligible for a 15th-straight bowl appearance. The current bowl-appearance streak is tied with Wisconsin for the sixth-longest in the country, trailing only Florida State (34), Virginia Tech (23), Georgia (19), Oklahoma (17) and LSU (16). Since the Broncos joined FBS in 1996, they have failed to make the postseason just four times ( , 2001). In 2001, the last season in which the Broncos did not go bowling, Boise State was bowl-eligible with an 8-4 record but was not selected for a game. RETURNING ALL-MW: Of the 13 Broncos named All-MW in 2015, seven returned for the 2016 season. Quarterback Brett Rypien was named Mountain West Freshman of the Year in addition to being one of six Broncos named to the first team. He was joined on the first team by wide receiver Thomas Sperbeck and kicker Tyler Rausa. Tight end Jake Roh and running back Jeremy McNichols were each named second team, while linebacker Tanner Vallejo and offensive lineman Mario Yakoo were named honorable mention. ACADEMIC SUCCESS: The Broncos were one of only five schools in the country to receive the NCAA s Public Recognition Award in football for ranking in the top-10 percent nationally in APR from 2010 through Joining the Broncos were Clemson, Duke, Northwestern and Rutgers. At the conclusion of the academic year, the Boise State football team posted a combined cumulative grade-point average of 3.12, the highest on record. Additionally, the Broncos boasted a league-high 30 members on the Fall Academic All-Mountain West Team. Boise State has led the MW in all-academic selections in each of its five seasons in the league. DEFENSE SACKING HUNGER: Boise State teamed up with Albertsons and the Idaho Food Bank once again in 2016 to sack hunger in Idaho. With each sack by the Bronco defense during the 2016 regular season, Albertsons donated $500 to the Idaho Food Bank. Over 12 games, Boise State racked up 27 sacks ranking 48th in the country and third in the Mountain West, coming out to $13,500 worth of donations to the Idaho Food Bank. On Dec. 13, Albertsons announced that it would up the total donation to $20,000, and, along with Bronco sack leader David Moa (7.5 sacks), presented the check to the Idaho Food Bank. 10 The Bronco sack effort is paced by the defensive line trio of nose tackle David Moa (7.5 sacks), defensive end Sam McCaskill (5.5 sacks), STUD end Jabril Frazier (4.0 sacks) and Hoyte (1.5 sacks). Moa ranks tied for second and McCaskill tied for fifth in the Mountain West in sacks. The Bronco defense has also made 76.0 tackles for loss (45th in the country, third in the Mountain West), led by 13.0 from McCaskill and 8.5 from Moa.

On the year, Weaver also ranks 70th in the country with 8.3 tackles per game. MOX AND THE YOUNG KNOCKS: Senior cornerback Jonathan Moxey has taken on the role of elder statesman of a young Bronco cornerback corps, leading them with 49 tackles (42 solo), 13 pass breakups and 4.5 tackles-for-loss in His coverage has helped lock down one side of the secondary, while on the other, sophomore Tyler Horton (one interception) and senior Raymond Ford (one interception) have done well under his wing. Also continuing his ascent on the year is freshman cornerback DeAndre Pierce, son of former NFL linebacker Antonio Pierce (Washington, ; New York Giants, ). The younger Pierce made his first-career start Nov. 12 at Hawai i, making four tackles (three solo), including a crushing hit in the fourth quarter, and followed with a tackle-for-loss and a pass defended Nov. 18 against UNLV. On the year, Pierce has made 18 tackles (14 solo) and broken up two passes. JAMES MAKES MOST OF HIS FINAL YEAR: Redshirt senior safety Chanceller James put together one of his finest seasons in 2016, being named to the All- Mountain West Second Team, his first all-conference honor, after ranking second on the team with 73 tackles (43 solo) along with 3.5 tackles-for-loss and pacing the team with a pair of interceptions. Overall, James ranks 23rd in the Mountain West with 6.6 tackles per game. KICK-BLOCK GAME STRONG: Boise State has been a force in getting to kickers on special teams, Darren Lee s block of a UNLV punt Nov. 18 was the third of the year for the Broncos, 21st overall in the country. David Moa made the most important block of the season for Boise State, getting a hand on BYU s attempted game-winning field goal on Oct. 20 to preserve a win. It was Boise State s second blocked field goal of the season, following Sam McCaskill s block Sept. 10 against Washington State. Coincidentally, each block has factored heavily into the Broncos winning margin of each contest, as Moa s block preserved a win, and McCaskill s denied Washington State three points in a contest that ended up in favor of the Broncos. LEAN ON LEE: Senior linebacker Darren Lee continues to be the dependable everyman of the Boise State defense, enjoying a career year in 2016 as he stepped up for an injury-depleted Bronco linebacker corps as season-opening starters Tanner Vallejo (declared out for the season Nov. 18) and Joe Martarano (missed two games to injury early in the year, suffered season-ending injury Nov. 18) have battled injuries all season. Lee has appeared in all 12 games, making nine starts, ranking tied for fourth on the team with 64 tackles (43 solo) including 3.0 sacks and 6.5 tackles-for-loss. He has also accounted for one of Boise State s two defensive touchdowns this season, stripping an Oregon State receiver and taking it 19 yards for the score on Sept. 24. Prior to this year, Lee had made 49 tackles in his role on special teams and as a backup linebacker from MULTIPLE-TURNOVER GAME: At Hawai i on Nov. 12 Boise State recorded its first game with multiple forced turnovers (with two) since the 2015 Poinsettia Bowl. In that 55-7 win over Northern Illinois, the Broncos recovered three fumbles, and at Hawai i got an interception from safety Chanceller James along with a fumble recovery by defensive end Durrant Miles. Although Boise State has only forced eight turnovers through 12 games, the Broncos have done well to convert those takeaways into points, scoring touchdowns six times and getting a field goal once. The only time the Broncos didn t turn a takeaway into a touchdown was at New Mexico, when Raymond Ford s interception came on a Hail Mary on the final play of the first half. VALLEJO S SEASON ENDED BY INJURY: Senior linebacker Tanner Vallejo s Boise State career came to a premature end Nov. 18 as he was declared out for the year due to injury prior to the Broncos game against UNLV. Against Hawai i on Nov. 12, in what ended up being his final collegiate game, Vallejo racked up a team-high eight tackles, including 2.0 for loss, to bring his season total to 69, second on the team despite missing Oct. 1 s contest against Utah State. Vallejo made 14 tackles in Sept. 10 s win over Washington State, and followed up with four (two solo) and a shared tackle-for-loss in abbreviated action at Oregon State. Oct. 20 against BYU he led the team with 11 tackles (five solo) and shared a sack. Vallejo ends the 2016 season with 69 tackles, a sack and 6.0 tackles-for-loss. 11

12 JERSEY COMBINATIONS GAME NOTES CONTROLLING THE SECOND LEVEL: Boise State s linebacker trio of Tanner Vallejo, Ben Weaver and Darren Lee has played a pivotal role all season, contributing to Boise State s defensive rankings of 68th in rushing defense (179.8 ypg), 29th in scoring defense (22.7 ppg) and 46th in total defense (379.3 ypg). The three linebackers are also three of Boise State s top five tacklers this season, as Weaver leads the Broncos with 99 tackles, Vallejo, despite being done for the season due to injury, is third with 69 and Lee tied for fourth at 64. The trio has also contributed 14.5 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks. Vallejo, however, missed Nov. 18 s game against UNLV and will miss the rest of the season due to injury. Also making an impact is this group is newcomer Blake Whitlock, a junior-college transfer from Saddleback College. Whitlock made his first start Oct. 1 against Utah State, and started against UNLV and Air Force in Vallejo s absence. This year Whitlock has made 31 tackles (16 solo) with 2.0 sacks and 4.0 tackles-for-loss. HEY CHICAGO WHAT DO YOU SAY? MARTARANO S MAKING TACKLES TODAY: Before leaving Nov. 18 s contest against UNLV with what would be a season-ending injury, redshirt junior linebacker Joe Martarano made a career-best 10 Oct. 29 in Wyoming, and forced a fumble which the Broncos recovered Nov. 12 at Hawai i. But the current Chicago Cubs farmhand had something else to celebrate this fall: the Cubs winning the club s first World Series in 108 years. Martarano was drafted by the Cubs out of high school in the 22nd round of the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft, and spent the summers of playing in the Cubs system. After batting.275 between the Arizona League Cubs and Eugene Emeralds (Short season-a), Martarano took the 2016 season off from baseball to focus on the upcoming football season. THIRD DOWN SHUTDOWN: Through 12 games Boise State s defense ranks 48th in the country and third in the Mountain West on third downs, limiting opponents to a conversion rate of just 37.8 percent (76-for-201). BUT THEY SAID THIS WASN T LAST YEAR S D-LINE: Boise State s 2015 defensive line finished that season ranked fifth in the nation in rushing defense, allowing just yards per game. After losing every starter from that unit to graduation or the NFL Draft, many had reservations about how well this year s unit would perform. The crew of Sam McCaskill, David Moa, Elliot Hoyte, Jabril Frazier and Gabe Perez have answered the call, helping the Boise State defense rank 30th in the nation with 2.60 sacks per game. Leading the way has been McCaskill, a redshirt senior who started for the Broncos in 2014, and this year leads the unit with 48 tackles (28 solo) and 13.0 tackles-forloss, along with 5.5 sacks. Redshirt sophomore David Moa leads the team with 7.5 sacks on the season, while Hoyte (18 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 4.5 tackles-for-loss) and Frazier (38 tackles, 4.0 sacks) have also brought the heat up front. TWO GAMES, TWO DEFENSIVE TOUCHDOWNS: The Boise State defense came up with big, momentum-swinging touchdowns in consecutive games earlier this season. Sept. 10 against Washington State, it was cornerback Tyler Horton with the 85-yard pick-six on the opening drive of the game to put the Broncos up, 7-0, and on Sept. 24 at Oregon State it was middle linebacker Darren Lee stripping Beaver receiver Seth Collins and taking it 19 yards to the end zone in the fourth quarter. Lee s play helped ice the win for the Broncos, as the Beavers had cut the Boise State lead to 14 (31-17) and was looking to drive for a score to make it a one-possession game. Fellow first-time starter Evan Tyler made four tackles (three solo) before suffering a season-ending knee injury Sept. 24 at Oregon State. Cornerback Tyler Horton has contributed the play of the year so far for the secondary, recording an 85-yard pick-six Sept. 10 against Washington State, and earning Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week recognition for it. Raymond Ford made his first interception of the season Oct. 7 at New Mexico, and safety Dylan Sumner-Gardner has also made a pick. NOT AS MANY NEW FACES AS YOU D THINK: Boise State returns four starters from its 2015 defensive unit which ranked 12th in the FBS in total defense (318.3 yards per game) and fifth in rushing defense (108.2 yards per game). However, there is a stable of individuals returning with starting experience, including redshirt senior defensive lineman Sam McCaskill, redshirt senior defensive tackle Elliot Hoyte, redshirt junior linebacker Joe Martarano, cornerbacks Raymond

OFFENSE McNICHOLS ONE OF THE COUNTRY S TOP RBs: Junior running back Jeremy McNichols, a Doak Walker Award semifinalist, enters bowl season as the nation s leader in touchdowns with 27 and third with 23 rushing touchdowns. He also ranks fifth in the country in both rushing yards (1,663) and all-purpose yards (2,185), while leading the Mountain West in the latter category. Over the past two seasons ( ), McNichols total of 53 touchdowns is the most of any FBS player. He has also scored a touchdown in 24-straight games, the longest streak in the FBS over the last 10 years. He s eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the second-straight season and currently stands fifth in the FBS with 1,663 rushing yards. Nov. 18 s 206-yard effort against UNLV was McNichols third of the season, making him the first Bronco in school history to achieve that feat, with his previous two coming Oct. 15 against Colorado State in which he set career bests in carries (40), rushing yards (217) and allpurpose yards (264) in Boise State s win, and Sept. 24 at Oregon State when he went for 208 yards and four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving). McNichols 40 carries against Colorado State also set a Boise State single-game record, eclipsing Cedric Minter s 38-year-old record of 38. McNichols has also been a major threat out wide, catching 32 passes for 450 yards and four touchdowns this season, a year after hauling in 51 passes for 460 yards and six scores in On Oct. 20 against BYU, McNichols caught five passes for 109 yards including a catch that went for 76 yards and the game s opening score. Paired with his 140 rushing yards, McNichols game that night was just the fifth in Boise State history. McNichols has also worked his way into good company in the Boise State record books. His 3,159 career rushing yards rank seventh at Boise State, his 44 rushing touchdowns fourth and his 55 total touchdowns tied for third all-time. McNichols has posted yard rushing games in his career, tied for fifth-best at Boise State while he is one of just two Broncos to post three 200-yard rushing games. His total of seven career 200-all-purpose-yard performances is second in school history, just one back of leader Brock Forsey. SPERBECK, WILSON MAKE BRONCO HISTORY: For the first time in Boise State history, the Broncos have produced a pair of 1,000-yard receivers in a single season as Thomas Sperbeck (1,193) and Cedrick Wilson (1,041) are both over the mark. Together, the pair has posted a combined yard receiving games in 2016, with both hitting the century mark in four contests (Sept. 3 at Louisiana, Oct. 7 at New Mexico, Nov. 12 at Hawai i, Nov. 25 at Air Force). 20/20: Jeremy McNichols made history again Nov. 4 against San Jose State, as his two touchdowns in the contest brought his season total to 20, which, along with his 26-touchdown campaign in 2015 makes him the only Bronco in school history to record two 20-touchdown seasons. He currently stands at 27 touchdowns in 2016, tops in the FBS and third-most in Boise State single-season history. SPERBECK TAKES OVER AS BOISE STATE S BEST: Senior wide receiver Thomas Sperbeck, the only current Bronco voted by the fans to the 30-Year All-Blue Team, made nine catches for 109 yards and a touchdown in Oct. 20 s win over BYU, but it was a 20-yard reception in the first quarter that stood out. That catch pushed Sperbeck to 3,075 career receiving yards, passing Titus Young (3,063 yards) as Boise State s all-time leader. Sperbeck is currently at 3,522 career receiving yards after making five catches for 123 yards at Air Force on Nov. 25. Sperbeck has continued his ascent up multiple categories of the Boise State record book, as he now stands fourth all-time with 216 receptions (28 behind alltime leader Matt Miller), joining Miller (244), Shane Williams-Rhodes (239), Austin Pettis (229) and Titus Young (204) as the only Bronco receivers with at least 200 career catches. On Nov. 12 at Hawai i he caught five passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns, marking the 14th 100-yard receiving game of his career and passing Ryan Ikebe ( ) as Boise State s all-time leader in that category. Sperbeck now has yard games in his career after going for 123 at Air Force. Heading into bowl season, Sperbeck leads the Mountain West in receptions (72) and receiving yards (1,193), and is tied for fourth in touchdown catches (nine) a season after leading the conference in receiving yardage with a Boise State single-season record 1,412 as well as with 88 receptions, which tied Miller s Boise State single-season record. 13

Wilson hauled in four passes for a career-high 193 yards and two touchdowns, moving into the team lead with 10 scoring grabs. Wilson put up a career day Oct. 7 at New Mexico, posting career bests in catches (nine), receiving yards (167, before being eclipsed by his performance at Air Force) and touchdown catches (three) in just over a half of action. So far this season, Wilson has caught 50 passes for 1,041 yards and 10 scores, with the touchdown mark third in the Mountain West. Wilson also leads the conference with 20.8 yards per reception and ranks fourth in the conference in receiving yards per game (86.8). His 1,041 receiving yards this year also sets the Boise State record for a Bronco in their first year with the program. ANOTHER NON-QB THROWING A TOUCHDOWN: Despite the Bronco roster listing five players at quarterback, Boise State in fact retains the services of a couple of converted signal-callers in wide receivers Cedrick Wilson and Thomas Sperbeck. Sperbeck s throwing prowess was on display yet again Oct. 29 at Wyoming, as he took lateral from Jeremy McNichols and hit quarterback Brett Rypien for a 33-yard touchdown that put the Broncos in front, Sperbeck is now 3-for-3 passing this season for 92 yards and three touchdowns, having hit McNichols and A.J. Richardson on his previous scoring tosses. Wilson is 2-for-2 this year for 84 yards and a score. Former prep quarterbacks, the pair showed off their talents at their former positions Sept. 24 at Oregon State as Wilson completed a 23-yard pass to tight end Alec Dhaenens, and Sperbeck took a snap from the Wildcat and ran for nine yards. Wilson added to his numbers Oct. 1 against Utah State, completing a 61- yard touchdown pass to Jeremy McNichols. #RYPITGOOD: Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien remains the standard-bearer among Mountain West quarterbacks, leading the conference in passing yards (3,025; ypg) and total offense (3,325 yards; ypg), and is second in passing touchdowns (23). On Nov. 12 at Hawai i he accounted for more touchdowns than he had incompletions, throwing four touchdowns and rushing for a fifth while going 18-for-22 for 338 yards. Rypien posted his third-career 400-yard passing effort with 442 yards Oct. 20 against BYU, tying Kellen Moore for second-most all-time, and just one behind leader Ryan Dinwiddie ( ). It was also Rypien s eighth-career 300-yard passing game, fourth all-time at Boise State, and with 317 passing yards at halftime against BYU it was the third time this season in which he had 300 passing yards by halftime (304 yards at Louisiana on Sept. 3, 368 at New Mexico on Oct. 7). He had his best game of the season Oct. 7 at New Mexico, completing 21-of-28 passes for 391 yards and a career-best five touchdowns in the win. Rypien put up these numbers in just over a half of action, as he threw for 368 yards and five scores by halftime, and on his only drive of the second half took the Broncos downfield for a touchdown to make it Bob Behler (left), a four-time Idaho Sportscaster of the Year, is in his eighth season calling play-by-play for the Broncos. Former Boise State offensive lineman Pete Cavender is in his seventh season providing commentary. WALE AMONG NATION S TOP PUNTERS: Redshirt senior Sean Wale is having a career year in 2016, ranking sixth in the country and leading in the Mountain West with a 45.2 punting average, earning him a spot on the All-Mountain West Second Team. His net punting average of 40.2 yards per punt also ranks 18th in the country and is second in the Mountain West. Of his 47 punts this season, Wale has dropped 18 inside the opponents 20-yard line and only three have gone for a touchback. Additionally, 23 of his punts have been fair-caught. Wale also got to use his legs for another purpose Nov. 4 against San Jose State, pulling off a fake punt and running 29 yards for a first down in the first quarter. His big play gave the Broncos a key first down in Spartan territory and led to Boise State s second touchdown of the game, making it Wale, with a 3.84 cumulative grade-point average has also been recognized for his work in the classroom, being named a William V. Campbell Trophy semifinalist in 2016, and being voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team in

15 ALL-BLUE TEAM GAME NOTES DOESN T MATTER WHO THROWS IT, McNICHOLS WILL CATCH IT: While Jeremy McNichols has made his bones at Boise State as a running back, he remains a dangerous option as a receiver. Oct. 20 against BYU he caught five passes for a career-best 109 yards and a touchdown, with the scoring catch going for a careerlong 76 yards. Also this season, McNichols has caught a touchdown from three different passers (Thomas Sperbeck at Louisiana and Cedrick Wilson against Colorado State, along with two receptions from Brett Rypien this season). So far in 2016, McNichols is third on the team with 32 catches for 450 yards and four touchdowns. This figure is helped by a passing attack that ranks 16th in the nation with yards per game, and a rushing attack that cranks out yards per contest, ranking 57th in the country. Scoring-wise, the Broncos rank 28th in the country and second in the Mountain West with 35.6 points per game. RAUSA PERFECT ON PATs: Redshirt senior kicker Tyler Rausa is on the verge of accomplishing something no Boise State kicker has done since 2008: finishing a season perfect on PAT attempts. Entering the Cactus Bowl against Baylor, Rausa is 58-for-58 on the year, and if he ends the year perfect, he d be the first Boise State kicker to do so (minimum 20 attempts) since Kyle Brotzman finished for-50. The Lou Groza Award candidate hasn t had many field-goal opportunities this season, as the Broncos have tried just 11 on the year. Rausa is 7-for-11 this year on those field-goal attempts. SHUTOUT STREAK: Boise State has not been shutout in 250 consecutive games, the ninth-longest active streak in the country and the 16th-longest streak in NCAA history. The last shutout came on the road against No. 15 Washington State, Sept. 27, 1997 (58-0). The loss to the Cougars is one of only two shutouts the Broncos have suffered since becoming a four-year institution in O-LINE EXPERIENCE: Although the Broncos lost two linemen to the National Football League, the team still counts four returning starters along the line. Archie Lewis started eight games, including the final five at left tackle; Travis Averill started 11 games at left guard; Steven Baggett started all 13 games at right guard; and Mario Yakoo started 12 games, 10 of which coming at right tackle. Last season Marcus Henry started all 13 games at center, and was picked up by the New Orleans Saints as a free agent, and Rees Odhiambo, a third-round selection by the Seattle Seahawks, started eight games at left tackle. According to Phil Steele, the Broncos 95 returning starts along the offensive line ranks 14th nationally entering Of the 30 members, 12 are currently playing professional football, while six are coaching - including three on the Broncos staff. 18 THE FILE HEAD COACH BRYAN HARSIN Bryan Harsin, a former Boise State quarterback, assistant coach and offensive coordinator, is in his third season as the head coach at his alma mater. Through the 2016 regular season, Harsin boasts a record of 31-8 at Boise State, an average of more than 10 wins per year. Overall, he is as a head coach including one season at Arkansas State and has led his programs to bowl games in each of his four years as a head coach. In his debut season Harsin led his alma mater back to where it rose to national prominence. Boise State went 12-2 in 2014, winning its first outright Mountain West Championship and capping the campaign with a victory over Arizona in the 2014 VIZIO Fiesta Bowl. The victory in the Fiesta Bowl was the third such win for the Broncos in the previous nine seasons. Harsin, serving as offensive coordinator in the first two Fiesta Bowl victories, has been a part of each of the school s three appearances in the game. The team s victory in the 2014 Sports Authority Mountain West Football Championship marked the team s first outright league title since joining the league in 2011, and the first overall since The only alumnus to lead the Broncos as head coach in the history of Boise State, Harsin has now won a conference championship as a student-athlete, assistant coach and head coach. This year, Harsin guided the Broncos to a 10-2 regular season, helping the Broncos reach their 15th-straight bowl game, tied for the sixth-longest streak in the country. Boise State also climbed to No. 13 in both the AP and Coaches Polls, the school s highest ranking in each since finishing eighth and sixth, respectively, at the conclusion of the 2011 season. For his efforts in 2014, Harsin was named a finalist for the Paul Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year Award, the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award and the Dodd Trophy, given annually by the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year Foundation. He was also named the nation s top first-year head coach by the Football Writers Association of America. Harsin has been a candidate for the Dodd Trophy in each of his three seasons at Boise State, and this year Harsin was once again named to the watch list for the Bryant Award. In addition to rejoining the national rankings, the Broncos offense also returned the nation s elite under Harsin s guidance. Boise State concluded the 2014 season ranked ninth nationally in scoring offense (39.7) and 14th nationally in total offense (494.3). The team concluded the 2015 season ranked 15th nationally in both scoring offense (39.1) and total offense (501.5), and at the conclusion of the Broncos 2016 regular season, ranked 22nd nationally in total offense (479.8) and 30th in scoring offense (35.6). Harsin was named head coach, Dec. 11, A graduate of Capital High School in Boise, he played quarterback for the Broncos from Following his graduation from Boise State with a degree in business management, Harsin coached running backs and receivers at Eastern Oregon in The former Bronco letterwinner began his coaching career at Boise State as a graduate assistant in 2001, before taking over the tight ends as a full-time assistant coach from When Chris Petersen was hired as head coach in 2006, Harsin assumed the role of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Harsin was Petersen s offensive coordinator for five of his eight seasons as head coach ( ), and was named a finalist for the 2009 Broyles Award, awarded annually to the nation s top assistant coach. Boise State went 61-5 during his tenure as offensive coordinator. 23 ALBERTSONS STADIUM / THE BLUE Albertsons Stadium - and Lyle Smith Field - is the home of Boise State football and the annual Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Smith is the undisputed father of Bronco football, who from built one of the top junior college programs in the country. When he retired from his head coaching position to become the athletic director, Smith had a record of (.850). Completed during the summer of 1970 at a cost of $2.2 million, what was originally known as Bronco Stadium had a seating capacity of 14,500. Since that time the stadium has expanded four times to its current capacity of 36,387. Boise State established a first in 1986 by installing the first blue AstroTurf in the country. The second blue AstroTurf field was installed in 1995, with the third going in prior to the 2002 season. (AP)-Jeremy McNichols ran for 208 yards and scored four touchdowns and Boise State is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2011 after a win Saturday over Oregon State. McNichols did most of his damage in the first half, as the junior running back ran for 146 yards and touchdowns of 5, 6 and 70 yards, and caught a 6-yard scoring pass. Brett Rypien completed 19 of 36 passes for 215 yards and one touchdown for the Broncos, who won their fourth consecutive game against a Pacific-12 opponent, and their second this season. The Broncos offense accumulated 512 yards, but only 77 after halftime. Rypien threw for 338 yards and four touchdowns as Boise State racked up a season-high 603 yards of total offense, 403 of them coming before halftime. The Broncos jumped out to a commanding 28-0 lead early in the second quarter and went on to score touchdowns on six of their first seven possessions. Jeremy Nichols, the nation s leading scorer, ran for 153 yards on 16 carries.
