Jay writes that she may be best remember(ed) as one of the chaperons on the famous (or infamous) class trip to NYC in Mrs. Guyther was 93. BL sends its deepest condolences to Jay and the entire Guyther family. Upcoming Alumni Events The Alumni Basketball game is set for Friday, January 13 th at 5:30. The BL Golf Outing is set for Friday, April 27 th - 9:00 a.m. shotgun start. Alumni Notes Hy Levasseuar 57 continues to dominate in the Senior Olympics. He participated in 29 events and won medals in 24 of them. Hy won Gold in the 1500 Meter Run, 800 Meter Run, Standing Long Jump, Football Throw, Basketball Shooting for Time, 1500 Meter Olympic Race Walk and Lawn Bowling. He won ten silver medals and seven bronze medals! Hy was a two-time All-American in lacrosse at the University of Virginia and was inducted into the BL Athletic Hall of fame in Page Weatherley 75 recently wrote about his former teacher/coach Fernando Hidalgo: Dear Senor Hidalgo: As senior captain of a strong 1974 BL soccer team, and speaking for all of us who served under you, I want you to know that we know you were our savior-coach - the originator of a winning attitude for soccer at BL. You took over a losing program. You made us become a prideful unit. You worked your magic to re-imagine the program. You let us figure out our particular issues - all on our own. And so, we produced for you by winning a lot of games. You upgraded the entire soccer program (so many years ago.) Wow. I thank you for your immense lessons of wisdom, patience and tolerance, and your pure thoughtful guidance.
4 I thank you "being there". I remember you getting us safely back and forth across the street each day, for practice at catholic Assumption nunnery. I remember the Edmonson High school-bus ride, and the zip-guns and crowds on the field at Walton. I remember the break-through "McDonough 1974" 1-0 victory. And I remember when winning was just expected. While I never had your Spanish class (always "talked about" by many others), your over-all approach to decision-making during our shared time together, still informs me today as an educator. In tight situations at work, I find myself asking: What would Mr. Hildalgo do? Love, Page Weatherley Bill Held 88 is pictured above with his son, Gavin, who played in a lacrosse festival held at the Harford County Polo Grounds on Oct. 23rd. Gavin plays attack and midfield. He had three goals in the second of three games they played. Ryan Perlberg 03 recently opened a new bar in at 807 S. Broadway in Fells Point called RYE. RYE will have a focus on mixology, charcuterie, and late-night breakfast on the weekends. Ryan says that RYE is going to focus on fresh and locally sourced ingredients, so the more specialty cocktails will range from $7-10. Ryan hopes that that the alumni and the BL family will stop by and say hello. Tom Thibeault 08 is a junior attending Bucknell University. Tom is now unable to play varsity lacrosse because of a medical condition but has agreed to help the squad this year in any way he
5 can. Last week, his teammates decided to make him one of the captains of the team for the 2012 season. Although Tom can t play, he will help lead the Bison team in Division I play next spring. Charlie McComas 08 was recently named one of the captains of the 2012 North Carolina men s lacrosse team. Boys Latin Football On Friday, the varsity football team played an important MIAA B Conference night game against Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS.) BL played the second place Eagles tough all night eventually losing BL has two more regular season games. On Friday at 3:00 p.m. the Lakers will host Pallotti and on November 4 th the team will travel to St. Paul s to take on the Crusaders. Boys Latin Volleyball The varsity volleyball team played St. Paul s back in September and lost in straight sets 3 games to none. Last Tuesday the Lakers sought revenge on the Crusaders. In a contest that went to five games, BL won three games to two games. The win over SP sets up a home volleyball MIAA B Conference semi-final rematch with Archbishop Spalding on Wednesday, at 5:30 P.M. on the Gelston Athletic Schedule. If the Lakers win their semi final match against Spalding they will host the MIAA championship match Friday evening at 6:00 P.M. 95 Years Ago The annual Gilman-BL football game was cancelled due to an outbreak of infantile paralysis. Prior to the cancellation Baltimore Sun sports reporter Jesse Linthicum wrote: The match will have a direct bearing on the prep school title and since these elevens are old rivals fur is expected to fly. Dunham (BL was referred to as Dunham s because of Headmaster James Dunham) and Gilman did not meet last year because of a disagreement over the date. They got together early this season, however, and fans are anxious awaiting the clash. It will be the opener for Gilman, but Dunham has played only one contest and will not have much edge.
6 The game was never rescheduled. 85 Years Ago BL s varsity football team traveled to Washington to play St. Albans. The Latinists were never in the game. St. Alban s scored early and often. By halftime the game was nearly out of reach with the visitors leading St. Albans scored the only second half touchdown and the game ended 28-0 in favor of St. Albans. The Baltimore Sun reported that BL played hard but didn t have the talent to stay with their hosts. BL was led by quarterback Ralph Procter Years Ago BL s football team traveled to McDonogh to take on the Cadets. The Latinists came ready to play and after the first period built a 14-0 lead on two TD runs by quarterback Charles Kelly 33. They had the same lead at halftime. McDonogh regrouped during the intermission and by the end of three periods they were trailing by just a single point McDonogh scored a touchdown in the final stanza with just three minutes to play and held on to win the game Years Ago Boys Latin s six-man football team defeated a team of Mt. St. Joe seniors Bucky Struven 57 and Frank Wall 58 each tallied two touchdowns. Struven s TDs both came via passes thrown by quarterback Hy Levasseur 57. Levasseur also scored on a 19-yard scamper. Dick Webster 59 scored on a 4-yard pass from Lehr Jackson 59 and Caleb Ewing 58 also scored on a 30 yard run. 5 Years Ago BL s varsity football team defeated Pallotti 14-3 as part of the Primetime Pigskin High School Football Series on Homewood Field at Johns Hopkins. BL s defense led by Alex Otto 07, Gordon Kellerman 07, Travis Robinson 07, Page Whitman 08, Aaron Verardi 08, Chris Katerianakis 08, Nate Saunders 08, Lee Blake 08 and Don Carter 09 controlled the line of scrimmage the entire game. BL scored on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Charlie McComas 08 to Matt Field 08 and on a 44-yard run by Grady Gamble 07. Brett Weiss 07 kicked both extra-points. The School was an old house. (Headmaster) Jack Williams was the father and everybody else was just part of the family. Bruce Regan 66
