1 REGULAR SEASON GAME #14 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (4-9) VS. TENNESSEE TITANS (7-6) SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16, :00 PM (CENTRAL) ARROWHEAD STADIUM KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI TV: CBS Regional Coverage (KCTV-5 in Kansas City) Ian Eagle and Solomon Wilcots. RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs and Titans will renew the AFL s initial rivalry on Sunday at Arrowhead. The Chiefs are mired in a six-game losing rut and return home after a 41-7 loss at Denver (12/9), the club s only division road loss of the year. Kansas City has won its final home game of the year in 10 consecutive seasons and is seeking to extend that streak to 11 straight victories this week. The Chiefs are looking to secure their first home win since registering a decision vs. Cincinnati (10/14). Tennessee is still in the thick of the AFC Wild Card chase and owns a 7-6 record after a tough OT loss vs. San Diego (12/9). Titans head coach Jeff Fisher will be seeking his 100th regular season win on Sunday. Owning origins as the American Football League s first two teams, both clubs have rich histories dating back to their days as the in-state rival Dallas Texans and Houston Oilers. It is fitting that as the Chiefs mark the one-year anniversary of Lamar Hunt s passing on December 13th, his team will be facing the franchise founded by his longtime friend, Bud Adams. While the Chiefs are still mourning the loss of their Founder, Sunday s game will also serve as an early celebration of the 45th anniversary of the 62 AFL Championship Game played on December 23, 1962, a double-ot thriller that resulted in the first of three AFL titles for Hunt s Texans/Chiefs. This week s contest will also mark the 700th regular or postseason game the Chiefs have played since relocating to Kansas City in 63. Sunday s game will be the first visit to Kansas City by Adams franchise in their current incarnation as the Tennessee Titans. The club s last visit to Kansas City came as the Oilers in 95. This week s Chiefs-Titans clash comes exactly 17 years to the day of Tennessee s last victory at Arrowhead. That win by the Oilers came on December 16, 1990 when Hall of Fame QB Warren Moon threw for 527 yards against the Chiefs, the second-highest single-game passing total in NFL history. Tennessee s current 17-year victory drought at Arrowhead is surpassed by only two other AFC squads. Miami hasn t won at Arrowhead since 81, while Cleveland last departed Kansas City victorious in 88. KC concludes the regular season with a two-game road trip beginning with a contest at Detroit (12/23), followed by a game at the N.Y. Jets (12/30), while Tennessee has a home date next week with the Jets (12/23) STATS AND NFL RANKINGS CHIEFS TITANS Total Offense (31) (21) Rush Offense (32) (4) Pass Offense (25) (27) Total Defense (14) (6) Rush Defense (26t) 98.1 (9) Pass Defense (9) (8) Turnover Ratio (24t) -2 (18) Pts./Game (31) 19.2 (22) Opp. Pts./Game (13) 20.3 (11) THE SERIES The Chiefs own a (.600) edge in the 45 regular and postseason games played between these two original AFL franchises, including a 2-0 mark in postseason competition. Kansas City s 27 wins against Tennessee are the club s most against any non-division AFC team. The Chiefs won the most recent contest in this series, a victory on Monday Night Football at Tennessee (12/13/04). RB Larry Johnson enjoyed a breakout performance in that game, registering his second career 100-yard game and becoming the first player in KC history to post a pair of 40-yard TD runs in one game. The Titans last victory over KC was a OT decision (9/10/00) in the first meeting between the squads in Nashville. That game snapped a fourgame victory streak the Chiefs had established against the Oilers dating back to a win in the 93 AFC Divisional Playoffs. Dating back to that playoff triumph, the Chiefs have won five out of the last six meaningful contests in this series, including a win in the final Chiefs-Oilers outing played at the Astrodome (9/1/96) on Opening Day of the 96 campaign. The red-hot Oilers had won 11 straight regular season games to close the 94 regular season behind QB Warren Moon, but the Chiefs rallied for 21 fourth-quarter points thanks to QB Joe Montana, RB Marcus Allen and a stifling defense that sacked Moon 9.0 times in KC s most recent playoff victory. But by far the most dramatic clash between these two clubs came in the 62 AFL Championship Game when the Dallas Texans prevailed in a double-ot thriller over the Houston Oilers at Jeppesen Stadium in Houston (12/23/62). At 77 minutes and 54 seconds, that contest still ranks as the second-longest game in NFL history.

JETS 24, Tennessee 17 Jeff Fisher HOME TEAM IN ALL CAPS REMEMBERING THE 62 AFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME Sunday s contest between the Chiefs and Titans will be played exactly one week shy of the 45th anniversary of the 62 AFL Championship Game between the AFL s two original franchises Lamar Hunt s Dallas Texans and Bud Adams Houston Oilers. That thrilling, double-overtime title tilt at Houston s Jeppesen Stadium helped propel the young league into the national sporting landscape as the Texans claimed victory on a 25-yard FG by K Tommy Brooker at the 2:54 mark of the second overtime session. At 77:54, this epic contest remains the second-longest in pro football history, but is best remembered for the infamous decision of Texans RB Abner Haynes to kick to the clock at the start of the first overtime session. Dallas won the toss, but elected to kick off. However, Haynes inadvertently elected for his team to kick into the wind instead of having it as a consolation for not receiving the football. Hunt s team would move to KC and become known as the Chiefs in 63. When Adams Tennessee squad won the 99 AFC Championship Game to advance to that franchise s first-ever Super Bowl, it was Hunt who was on hand to present his longtime friend with the Lamar Hunt Trophy. (Above) Hunt and Adams were the AFL s two original owners. (Right) Hunt and head coach Hank Stram combined to lead the Texans/Chiefs to three American Football League titles ( 62, 66, 69). REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the 60s and actually coined the term Super Bowl. As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact that league has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt s humble styles, the letters LH are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC s jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player. TE TONY GONZALEZ S RECORD-SETTING CAREER Eight-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns 66 career TD catches, the most by a tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez ranks second in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (800) and receiving yardage (9,664), trailing only Shannon Sharpe (815-10,060). Gonzalez joins Sharpe as just the second TE in NFL history with 800 or more career receptions. Gonzalez owns 22 career 100-yard receiving games, the most in KC history. That marks ties Jackie Smith as the second-highest total in NFL annals by a TE, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24). Gonzalez has a reception in 111 consecutive contests, meaning only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE. Gonzalez is the first TE in NFL history to record 900 receiving yards five straight years. Gonzalez has faced the Titans just two times, recording nine catches for 92 yards. Gonzalez has registered nine straight 60-catches seasons and five consecutive 70-catch campaigns, the longest streaks by a TE in NFL history. Gonzalez needs just 16 more catches and 537 more receiving yards to bypass Sharpe for the most receptions and yards by a TE in NFL history. 4 The Running Game Will Be Key For Both the Chiefs, Titans in This Arrowhead Finale by Pete Moris Arrowhead is Typically a Tough Venue in December The Chiefs own an NFL-best 21-3 (.875) regular season December home record dating back to 95. The Chiefs have won their final home game in 10 straight seasons and are 15-1 in their last 16 home finales. No matter the month, Arrowhead is always a tough place for opponents to play. Since the start of the 90 campaign, only Denver (105-38,.734) has a better regular season record than the (.727) mark the Chiefs have compiled at Arrowhead. While Kansas City did drop its most recent home contest vs. San Diego (12/2), the Chiefs haven t lost back-to-back December home games since 82. The Titans franchise claimed its last victory at Arrowhead with a win by the Oilers (12/16/90), one of just four home December losses the Chiefs have suffered since 90. Tennessee has suffered losses in three of its last four road games, but owns a very respectable 7-4 road record in its last 11 contests away from Nashville. The Titans have lost five straight road games against AFC West foes with their last victory against one of Kansas City s divisional foes coming by a count at Oakland (12/22/01). Since Jeff Fisher took over the franchise s head coaching duties in November of 94, the Titans are (.538) in December road games. Since the start of the 95 campaign, Fisher s squads rank sixth in the league with a (.579) record in all regular season games played on or after December 1st. Indianapolis 20-6 (.769) Have won seven of last eight. Notable Victory Droughts at Arrowhead It s been 17 years since the Titans franchise registered a victory at Arrowhead. In fact, the team was still located in Houston and known as the Oilers. However, six other squads own longer current stretches since their last win at Arrowhead. In addition, four franchises Arizona, Atlanta, Dallas and Washington have never won a regular season contest at Arrowhead. Dating back to 95, the Titans own the NFL s fifth-best road record with a (.520) mark. Here is a look at the teams with at least one victory at Arrowhead that have gone the most seasons since their last win on KC s home field. Titans QB Vince Young (D1-06) is scheduled to make his inaugural start at Arrowhead on Sunday. The Chiefs are 30-4 (.882) at Arrowhead dating back to 95 when the club forces two or more INTs. The Titans own a 3-6 (.333) record in games when Young is picked off two or more times, including last week s OT loss vs. San Diego (12/9). The Titans are 1-7 dating back to last season when allowing an opposing QB to compile a rating game. Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle (D3-06) is still looking for his first NFL win and his first triple-digit rating game. Turnovers Are Always Critical For Kansas City The Chiefs are 45-4 (.918) at Arrowhead with a positive takeaway margin dating back to 95. KC has won 18 consecutive games when positive at home dating back to 2002, the fourth-longest active streak in the league. KC is 8-2 under head coach Herm Edwards when positive. The Chiefs also own an 8-3 record under Edwards when committing one turnover or less. The Chiefs have posted a +4 turnover mark (10 takes/6 gives) in their four wins in 2007, but are -12 (11 takes/23 gives) in their nine losses. The Titans are 21-6 (.778) with a positive turnover differential on the road since 2000, including five straight wins. The Titans are just 5-23 (.179) on the road when negative over the same timeframe. Overall, the Titans are 4-11 with a negative turnover mark since Only BAL (35), HOU (33), SF (32) and ARZ (32) have committed more giveaways than TEN (30) in NFL LEADERS, MOST CONSECUTIVE HOME WINS WITH A POSITIVE TURNOVER RATIO, ACTIVE Team Streak Start of Streak Date 1. In Kansas City s four wins, the club has averaged 31.3 rushing attempts for yards. In the Chiefs nine losses, KC has averaged just 22.3 carries for 68.9 yards. Staying balanced offensively is always important for the Chiefs. In those four wins, the club has run 48.1% of the time and has dropped back to pass on 51.9% of its plays. In those nine losses, KC has run just 36.9% of the time and has attempted to pass 63.1% of the time. The Titans currently rank ninth in the league in rushing, averaging ypg. Only Pittsburgh (33.6) has averaged more rushing attempts per game than Tennessee (33.2) this season. The Titans have averaged 37.4 carries and rushing ypg in their seven wins, while registering 28.3 carries for yards in their six losses. Tennessee is particularly effective running the ball on the road. Since the start of the 2006 campaign, no NFL team can top the Titans road rushing average of ypg. The Chiefs boast the NFL s top Red Zone defense, allowing just 13 TDs on 33 opponent trips inside the Chiefs 20-yard line, good for a 39.4 Red Zone TD percentage. On average, NFL teams are allowing TDs at a 52.1% clip inside the Red Zone this season. Tennessee s offense is 31st in the league in Red Zone offense, scoring 17 TDs on 46 Red Zone trips (37.0 TD percentage). The Chiefs also lead the league in goal-to-go defense, allowing opponents to score six TDs in 13 goal-to-go situations for a 46.2% goal-to-go TD percentage. In fact, the Chiefs are the only team that has relinquished fewer than 10 goal-to-go TDs this season. On average, NFL defenses have allowed TDs on 67.2% of their goal-to-go situations this season. The Titans are tied for 23rd in the league in goal-to-go offense, scoring TDs on 61.5% (16 of 26) their goal-to-go possessions. 7 LAST GAME Broncos 41, Chiefs 7 December 9, 2007 INVESCO Field at Mile High 75,895 KANSAS CITY DENVER The Chiefs haven t had many pleasant memories of INVESCO Field at Mile High and their latest trip did nothing to change that. Kansas City struggled on both sides of the ball en route to a disastrous 41-7 loss. The contest marked the largest margin of victory by Denver in the 48-year history of the Chiefs-Broncos series. The lopsided affair began from the game s very first possession. Denver took the opening kickoff and marched 77 yards in just four plays, scoring on a 21-yard pass from QB Jay Cutler to WR Brandon Stokley. Rookie RB Selvin Young gashed Kansas City for a 50-yard dash on the drive to set up the 7-0 lead. Things only got worse as the Broncos scored another touchdown minutes later. After the Chiefs went three-andout, Denver went 84 yards on seven plays on its way to a one-yard touchdown run by RB Travis Henry. Cutler completed passes of 28 and 22 yards on the drive as the Broncos held a 14-0 lead just 7:47 into the game. With their backs against the wall Herm Edwards troops would show a bit of resiliency late in the first quarter. The Chiefs defense forced back-to-back three-and-outs and the offense came alive under pressure. Kansas City converted three straight fourth downs, the third coming on a 22-yard pass from QB Brodie Croyle to WR Dwayne Bowe on fourth-and-13. From there, Croyle hit TE Tony Gonzalez in the left flat and watched the Pro Bowler slip two would-be tacklers and score a 15-yard touchdown to bring the Chiefs within 14-7 midway through the second quarter. The Chiefs used 15 plays on the drive and took 8:51 off the clock. However, that would be the last bit of hope for the Red and Gold. Whatever momentum the Chiefs had built was extinguished on the very next possession. Denver went back on the offensive attack ripping off 71 yards on seven plays, scoring on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Cutler to WR Brandon Marshall. The Broncos would tack on a 37-yard K Jason Elam field goal just before halftime to take a 24-7 lead at the break. Things would snowball in the third quarter as Denver posted 17 unanswered points on an Elam field goal and Cutler touchdown passes to TE Daniel Graham and Marshall. Denver s 41-7 lead would hold up as the final score. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez registered his 800th career reception, joining TE Shannon Sharpe (815) as the only other player at that position to have 800 or more career receptions. WR Dwayne Bowe broke the Chiefs single-season rookie records for both receptions (56) and receiving yardage (821). RB Abner Haynes (55 catches) and E Chris Burford (789 yards) set the previous Chiefs rookie receiving marks during the franchise s inaugural season in 60.
