THE RETURN Corn Elder capped one of the most thrilling endings in college football history against Duke, a 75- yard kick return for TD as time expired to top the Blue Devils. The kick return took eight laterals and roughly 46 seconds to complete after Dallas Crawford made the initial field at the 25-yard line. A number of Hurricanes played pivotal roles on the return; five different players touched the ball (Crawford, Elder, Jaquan Johnson, Mark Walton & Tyre Brady), while David Njoku and Charles Perry came up with timely blocks. The play went under a lengthy review before the TD was official. The win marked UM s first against a ranked team on the road since the 2009 opener vs. Florida St. INSIDE THE NUMBERS Heading into the ninth week of the college football season, the Hurricanes rank among the top 10 in four national statistical categories. The Canes are also ranked sixth nationally in turnover margin. ROSIER IMPRESSES IN FIRST CAREER START Making his first start at QB in place of an injured Brad Kaaya, redshirt freshman Malik Rosier tossed for 272 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Duke on Oct. 31. He finished the game 20-for-29 with one interception, setting career highs in nearly every category. The uniforms pay homage to U.S. military. Hurricanes will don a camouflage TECHFIT baselayer with an oversized metallic silver U on top. Miami players will also wear khaki socks and camouflage adizero 5-star 4.0 gloves that all incorporate that colors of U.S. Army Delta Force uniforms. Accenting the camouflage theme, the helmet, jersey and pants are a bold black and feature metallic silver oversized U logos on the shoulder pads, pants and helmet. To complete the military homage, the Hurricanes will debut the new Delta Force inspired Dark Ops 2016 adizero 5-Star 5.0 x KEVLAR and 2016 Freak x KEVLAR cleats. Additionally, the Hurricanes will donate game worn jerseys and helmets to be auctioned with proceeds benefiting the Miami VA Healthcare System. YIPPEE KAAYA Despite missing the team s last game at Duke, sophomore QB Brad Kaaya remains near the top of the ACC in a number of individual categories, including passing yards (1,846, second), passing yards per game (263.7, first) and total offense (1,789 yards, sixth). Kaaya has thrown just five interceptions in his last 431 attempts. He has thrown for more than 200 yards in 14 of his 20 career games at Miami and has five career 300-yard performances. Kaaya s career home numbers (11 games) stand out: 2,719 passing yards, 24 TDs & just 6 INTs. Kaaya set personal bests in completions (29), attempts (49) and pass yards (405) at Florida State (Oct. 10), tossing three touchdowns with no interceptions. His passer efficiency rating was Kaaya s 405 yards were the most by a Miami quarterback vs. Florida State in the modern era of Miami football (since 1980), and represent just the 11th 400-yard game in that same timespan. The California native was one of only 15 quarterbacks in the country to throw for more than 3,000 yards, 26-or-more touchdowns and 12-or-fewer interceptions in 2014; he was the only true freshman quarterback in the country to accomplish this feat. As a freshman in 2014, Kaaya was named the ACC Offensive and ACC Overall Rookie of the Year after a stellar first campaign with the Hurricanes. Kaaya ranked second in the ACC in passing yards (3,198), and led the ACC in passing touchdowns (26), passing efficiency (145.9) and passing yards per completion (14.5) during his freshman year. GREAT SCOTT After missing the entire 2014 campaign with an injury, redshirt senior wide receiver Rashawn Scott has made a strong return to Miami s wide receiver corps in Scott ranks fifth in the ACC in receiving yards per game heading into the 10th week of the season, averaging 62.8 yards. The redshirt senior has started seven games in 2015 and leads the team in receptions (37), receiving yards (502) and receiving touchdowns (4). Scott is tied for sixth in the ACC in receptions per game (4.6) and sixth in total receptions (37). The Melbourne, Fla., native had his second career multi-td game (2) vs. Virginia Tech on Oct. 17. Miami has 17 turnovers gained and seven lost. Miami s defense has recorded 11 interceptions, tied for 18th-most in FBS and second-most in ACC. Miami s defense recorded its first shutout since 2010 in its season opener vs. Bethune-Cookman. Miami ranked No. 14 nationally in total defense in 2014, allowing an average of just yards per game - the fourth-best mark in the ACC. ARTIE AND RAYSHAWN ISLAND Junior cornerback Artie Burns leads the ACC and is tied for fifth nationally with five interceptions this season; his two picks vs. Virginia Tech on Oct. 17 marked the first multi-interception performance by a Hurricane since Tracy Howard had two picks at North Carolina in Burns five picks are already the most by a Hurricane in one year since Sean Taylor had 10 in Redshirt junior safety Rayshawn Jenkins is one of just seven players in the ACC (including Burns) with at least 3 interceptions in Burns became the first Hurricane player with an interception in three-consecutive games since Sean Taylor in 2003 (via AP) after having one pick in each of Miami s first three games. RETURN TO FORM Miami junior WR Stacy Coley had an eye-popping season as a freshman, earning 2013 Freshman All-America recognition and All-ACC honors after leading the team with 1,461 all-purpose yards. After a disappointing 2014 season where Coley caught just 23 passes for 184 yards, Coley has had a return to form in Despite missing two games with a hamstring injury, Coley ranks third on the team in catches (26) and receiving yards (354). Coley s 85.8 receiving yards per game in conference play is tops in the ACC. After not recording a TD in 2014, Coley has two in including one last time out vs. Duke. SPREADING THE WEALTH Fourteen different players have caught passes for the Hurricanes this season. Three Miami receivers (Rashawn Scott, Herb Waters and Stacy Coley) have totaled 350 yards-ormore receiving this season. In addition, Miami is one of only five schools in the ACC that features three-or-more receivers with 350 yards-or-more. PAVING THE WAY UM entered the season with one of the youngest offensive lines in the ACC, totaling 23 starts. Through eight games this season, Miami s youthful offensive line, which has consisted of a combination of one redshirt freshman, three sophomores & two juniors, has allowed the Hurricanes to average yards per game in total offense. Miami s offensive line has allowed just 12 sacks, which is tied for fourth -fewest in the ACC. In addition, the Hurricanes are 12th in the nation in average tackles for loss allowed (4.25). KIRBY, OWENS TO MISS REMAINDER OF 2015 SEASON Senior LB and team captain Raphael Kirby suffered a lower extremity injury against Virginia Tech on Oct. 17 and will miss the remainder of He was UM s leading tackler at time of injury. In addition, Elder also recorded his first career punt return for a touchdown on an electric run against the Wildcats. He nearly had a second punt return for a TD, but the play was called back. THE SPECIALIST Junior punter Justin Vogel has picked up where he left off in 2014 and is off to a great start after six games. Vogel ranks first in the ACC in punting average (44.5 yards) and 16th nationally. He also has dropped 15 punts inside-the-20 yard line and has 10 punts of 50+ yards. Vogel, a nominee for the 2015 Ray Guy Award was also a finalist for the award in 2014, boomed a career-best 73-yard punt vs. Clemson. BADG-O-MATIC Sophomore kicker Michael Badgley is 17-of-20 this year in field goal attempts. His OT field goal made against Nebraska served as the game-winner. His 17 made field goals and average of 2.43 FGM per game either lead or are tied for the NCAA lead. Badgley leads the ACC and ranks 10th in the NCAA in scoring, averaging 10.9 points per game. In a Sept. 19 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Badgley drilled a career-high and tied a school record with five field goals made (41, 27, 23, 28 and 28). THE SOUTH FLORIDA DUO South Florida products Joe Yearby (835) and Mark Walton (543) have combined for 1,378 all purpose yards and 10 touchdowns through the first eight games of the season. Of their 1,378 all purpose yards, Yearby (641) and Walton (284) have combined for 925 of the team s 990 rushing yards (93.4 percent). Miami s 2012 total of 5,282 ranks as the seventh-best total in program history. #PROCANES CONTINUING TRADITION Miami had seven players selected in the 2015 NFL Draft beginning in late April, the most since eight Hurricanes were drafted in 2011 and the fourth-most of any program nationwide in OT Ereck Flowers (1st round, NYG), WR Phillip Dorsett (1st, IND), LB Denzel Perryman (2nd, SD), TE Clive Walford (3rd, OAK), RB Duke Johnson (3rd, CLE), OL Jon Feliciano (4th, OAK) and DL Anthony Chickillo (6th, PIT) were all selected. The Hurricanes have had five or more players taken in the NFL Draft on 24 separate occasions since Hurricanes have been picked in the NFL Draft since the start of the 2000 season, a figure that is tied for second-most among all NCAA programs. Miami s 28 NFL first-round draft picks since 2000, including Ereck Flowers (No. 9 overall) and Phillip Dorsett (No. 29) in 2015, are the most among all NCAA programs, seven more than the next-highest total. ALMOST PERFECT 10 Teams don t beat Miami when scoring only 10 points. The Hurricanes are now in their last 160 games when holding opponents to 10 points or less, after winning 45-0 in its 2015 season-opener against Bethune-Cookman. SUN LIFE STADIUM RENOVATIONS FOR 2015 The modernization of Sun Life Stadium is moving ahead, and Miami Hurricanes football season ticket holders will experience a new game-day environment and amenities with the kickoff of the 2015 season. Sun Life Stadium has been remodeled and redesigned into a state-of-the-art sporting venue with enhanced comfort for fans, improved concessions and concourse areas, multiple premium seating areas, and new technology inside and outside of the stadium. PORTIS NAMED TO ACC CLASS OF FOOTBALL LEGENDS Miami running back Clinton Portis was one of 14 former student-athletes named to the 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference Class of Football Legends. 27 5 National Titles 20 National Award Winners 38 Bowl Appearances 74 All-Americans INTERIM HEAD COACH LARRY SCOTT LARRY SCOTT Interim Head Coach, Fifth Season USF, 2000 Florida native Larry Scott is in his third season as the Miami Hurricanes tight ends coach. He joined the UM staff in February 2013, and was named interim head coach of the Miami Hurricanes on Oct. 25, In 2014, Scott oversaw a tight end unit that combined for 52 receptions and 833 yards receiving. He also mentored Clive Walford, who had a breakout 2014 campaign where he led the team in receptions with 44. Under Scott s watchful eye, Walford earned third team All-America and second team All-ACC honors. Following the year, Walford was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. Prior to coming to Coral Gables, Scott, a native of Sebring, Fla., spent the previous eight seasons at USF, beginning in 2005 as the director of high school relations. In 2006, he moved to a graduate assistant role before coaching tight ends in and again in Between tight end coaching stints, he coached the offensive line in In 2012, he coached the running backs and became an offensive assistant. During his second stint as the Bulls TE coach, Scott and his group helped USF to its fifth-straight eight-win season, making it one of only 15 programs nationally and one of just 10 in BCS leagues to accomplish the feat. Scott s biggest impact on USF came in recruiting within Miami-Dade and Broward counties. USF s 2008 class was considered to be among the best in program history until the Bulls 2009 class was ranked No. 21 nationally. His coaching career began in the high school ranks as the run game coordinator and offensive line coach at Tampa s Wharton HS from May 2001-August From there, he was the offensive coordinator and O-line coach from at Freedom HS before returning to his prep alma mater - Sebring HS - in 2004 as an exceptional education teacher and the co-offensive coordinator. Scott was a three-year letterwinner ( ) as an offensive tackle for USF and was a member of the first recruiting class that began practicing in 1996, the year before the first USF Football game. He arrived at USF after a successful three-sport career at Sebring High School, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the football team and also earned a pair of varsity letters in baseball as a freshman and sophomore and in wrestling as a junior and senior. A 2000 graduate from USF with a bachelor s degree in communications, Scott and his wife Shakiera have three children: sons, Larry and Jalen, and daughter Jurnee. In 2014, D Onofrio guided Miami to a No. 14 overall ranking in total defense. Under D Onofrio s leadership, the Hurricanes held opponents to just yards per game in 2014, which was nearly 100 yards fewer than the 2013 campaign. In his first season at Miami, D Onofrio s defense finished the season ranked ninth in the nation in red zone defense and 21st in scoring defense, holding opponents to an average of points per game. The defense, under D Onofrio s guidance, finished strong and proved stingy, giving up an average of only 13.5 points in the last five games of the season. Prior to the 2011 season, D Onofrio saw two of his Temple standouts drafted, now are active on NFL rosters. Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson was taken in the first round by the New York Jets and free safety Jaiqwaun Jarrett went in the second round to the Philadelphia Eagles. As the recruiting coordinator at Florida State in 2008 and 2009, he was instrumental in the Seminoles landing back-to-back Top 10 signing classes and was also named the ACC s top recruiter in 2010 by ESPN.com. Prior to Florida State, Coley spent one season in his hometown of Miami as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at FIU. His most recent professional stint came as the defensive line coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. In addition, the Illinois native has collected championship titles in both the NFL and CFL. Melvin arrives at Miami after he spent the 2014 season at FIU serving on head coach Ron Turner s staff as the defensive line coach. Under Melvin guidance, the Panthers featured the No. 3 ranked defense in Conference USA. During his 2009 stint at Temple, the Owls ranked No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference against the run, limiting opponents to just yards per game. During his time with Temple, Melvin helped tutor current New York Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson. Beard played with the Hurricanes from and was a key member of Miami s 2001 National Championship team. He finished his career with over 900 yards receiving and nine touchdowns. As a player, Beard served as a team captain on the Hurricanes 2003 squad that finished with an 11-2 record and came away with a victory over Florida State in the 2004 Orange Bowl. During his career at Miami, Beard played with some of the best wide receivers to ever play in a Hurricane uniform, including Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss and Roscoe Parrish. Following his graduation from Miami with a degree in Liberal Arts and a minor in Sociology in 2003, Beard spent four years playing professionally in the Arena Football League. In his first season overseeing the running backs, Miami s running game averaged yards per game and featured three rushers that ran for over 5.0 yards per carry. Under Harris guidance, running back Duke Johnson posted one of the finest seasons in school history as he finished with an incredible 6.8 yard per carry average and finished with the second highest single-season rushing total in school history (1,652). Harris has more than 24 years of high school coaching experience and returns to Miami after a second successful stint as the head coach of Booker T. Washington ( , ), where he compiled a record in eight seasons. He was named Florida Dairy Farm Florida Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013 after guiding Booker T. Washington to back-to-back Class 4A state championships. Booker T. Washington finished No. 1 in the final MaxPreps national football rankings. Kehoe, an integral part of The U Football legacy, has coached some of the best linemen to ever play the game. In 2014, Kehoe continued Miami s offensive line legacy as he coached three offensive lineman, which would go on to sign NFL contracts following the 2014 campaign, including offensive tackle Ereck Flowers, who was selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Under Kehoe s leadership in 2014, the Hurricanes line paved the way for an offensive unit to average yards per game, a figure that ranked fourth in the ACC. In addition, Miami s offensive line cleared lanes for three Hurricane running backs to rush for over 5.0 yards per carry. As a team, Miami averaged rushing yards per game. Kehoe s tenure of 28 years at Miami, a span during which he has either played or coached for six head football coaches, ranks among the longest of any UM athletics figure. During the 2014 campaign, Miami s secondary was one the ACC s best units as it held opponents to under 200 yards per game (191.4) and ranked third in the league and 17th in the nation. Williams unit helped the Canes to a No. 21 ranking in the nation in scoring defense in 2011, holding opponents to an average of points per game. Prior to arriving in Coral Gables, Williams spent five seasons as defensive backs coach at Temple University. Williams defensive backs helped lead Temple to a successful 2010 campaign, finishing 8-4 and 5-3 in the Mid-American Conference. Standout defensive back Jaiquawn Jarrett garnered All- MAC first-team honors for the second year in a row, headlining a group of four defensive players earning all-conference accolades. Brown orginially joined the staff as the running backs coach, ascending to the post on Feb. 10, During the 2014 campaign, Brown coached the linebackers and guided a unit that helped the Hurricanes post the nation s 14th-best defensive attack, limiting opponents to just yards per game. Under Brown s guidance, linebacker Denzel Perryman posted an impressive season as he was selected as a Dick Butkus Award semifinalist for the second-consecutive season. He also earned All-ACC honors first team honors for the secondconsecutive season after he finished the 2014 campaign with a team-best 110 total tackles (79 solo). Perryman then became the first Hurricane player since 2007 to be awarded with Associated Press All-America honors. Perryman would go on to be selected Second Round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers.
