Game 3 Nov. 29, 2012 Western Kentucky at ULM Fant-Ewing Coliseum (Monroe, La.) NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma muscled its way to an victory over ULM Sunday in the season opener for both squads. The Sooners finished with a rebounding edge and outscored the Warhawks in the paint and 16-6 in second-chance points to move to 1-0 on the season. ULM junior guard Amos Olatayo had a stellar performance in his debut with the Warhawks, netting a game-high and career-high 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. Olatayo also had eight rebounds, three steals and one assist in 31 minutes. R.J. McCray added seven points for the Warhawks, while Millaun Brown and Jayon James each registered six points in their first game for ULM. James also finished with a team-high four assists. ULM hung tough early and led on a layup from James with 12:14 remaining before halftime. But the Sooners answered with a 17-2 run -- spanning just over five minutes -- to build a lead. OU s Steven Pledger capped the run with a 3-pointer from the left wing. Oklahoma pushed its lead to with a 17-4 run to start the second half and cruised to the victory. Pledger led four Oklahoma players in double figures with 15 points. Amath M Baye (12), Andrew Fitzerald (12) and Je lon Hornbeak (10) also finished with double-digit point totals for the Sooners. 01 James, J Brown, M Hansberry, M Mackey, T Olatayo, A McCray, R Eke, I Koszuta, K Bircett, T Lindsey, T TEAM 2 TOTALS (.345) (.188) (.556) No. Oklahoma FG 3FG FT R F TP A TO B S MIN 22 M Baye, A Osby, R Pledger, S Hornbeak, J Cousins, I Grooms, S Hield, B Fitzgerald, A Frascholla, J Neal, T Clark, C Arent, C TEAM 4 TOTALS (.471) (.391) (.750) Technical Fouls: Officials: James Breeding, Mark Schnur, Jon Stigliano Attendance: 8,734 ULM Oklahoma RUSTON, La. -- Louisiana Tech utilized a strong second half performance to defeat ULM Saturday at the Thomas Assembly Center. The Bulldogs used a 21-0 run - spanning eight minutes - midway through the second half to build a 23-point advantage and cruise to its fifth straight victory. I thought Louisiana Tech wore us down (in the second half), ULM head coach Keith Richard said. The constant harassment and the constant pressure over the course of time finally wore us down and helped them build up a pretty big lead. Sophomore guard Trent Mackey came off the bench and netted a career-high 17 points to lead the Warhawks (0-2). Mackey finished 6 of 11 from the field and 3 of 5 from 3-point range to surpass his previous career high of 13 points, set twice last season. Junior guard R.J. McCray and junior forward Jayon James each finished with 10 points and four assists. Junior guard Amos Olatayo finished with a game-high nine rebounds to go along with seven points and three steals. Leading early in the second half, Louisiana Tech (5-1) used a strong defensive effort during a 21-0 run that stretched the lead to with 10:28 remaining. The Bulldogs used their quickness to force 13 steals and 21 turnovers in the game. ULM s 21 miscues were the most in a game since Nov. 16, 2010, when it had 26 against Iowa. The Warhawks trailed by as many as 23, but battled back to within as close as with 4:20 to play. ULM had the ball on two occasions to cut into the lead even more, but Olatayo missed on 3-pointers on both trips. Mackey carried the Warhawk offense in the second half as he accounted for 11 of the team s 24 points in the half. ULM led for much of first half after sprinting out to an early 8-2 advantage. The Warhawks led by as many as seven (17-10) midway through the opening half before Louisiana Tech went on a 7-0 spurt to tie the game. The Bulldogs closed the half on a 9-1 run, including a tip-in off a missed free throw by Cordarius Johnson with three seconds remaining in the half to take a lead at the break. Johnson finished with a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bulldogs, while Raheem Appleby tallied 13 of his 18 points in the first half. 01 James, J McCray, R Olatayo, A Brown, M Lindsey, T Mackey, T Eke, I Koszuta, K Birchett, T Ponder, C TEAM 4 TOTALS (.429) (.250) (.500) No. Louisiana Tech FG 3FG FT R F TP A TO B S MIN 01 Kyser, M Gibson, B Appleby, R Smith, K Johnson, C Hamilton, A Anderson, C Massey, I Gjuroski, S Wilkerson, J McNeail, K Johnson, J Lewis, J Talbot, G TEAM 4 TOTALS (.415) (.304) (.680) Technical Fouls: Officials: Bill Gracey, Bobby Vetkoetter, Brent Dugas Attendance: 2,308 ULM Louisiana Tech MONROE, La. -- ULM wrapped a 12-1 run around halftime to take a lead with 17:50 to play, but timely baskets down the stretch by WKU proved to be the difference as the Hilltoppers claimed a victory Thursday night inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The contest was the first conference game of the season and WKU improves to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference play while ULM dips to 0-3 and 0-1 in the league. The two squads battled back and forth until the Hilltoppers went ahead for good on a Jamal Crook free throw with 10:22 to play. Crook s free throw started an 11-3 run that gave the visitor s a advantage with 6:48 to play. ULM closed within four points on two different occasions, but it was unable to get any closer down the stretch. Amos Olatayo led the Warhawks as he tied a career-high with 21 points behind a career-best in field goals (eight) and 3-pointers (three). Millaun Brown pitched in 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.
