In Smith's first season in St. Louis he helped the Rams return to the Super Bowl. The native Texan took over the Rams defense after five seasons as Tampa Bay's linebackers coach. He got his first taste of coaching at his hometown high school, Big Sandy, in 1980 before moving to Cascia Hall Prep in Tulsa. His first six years as a defensive coordinator were spent with the Baltimore Ravens, a tenure highlighted by a Super Bowl victory after the 2000 season which saw the Ravens defense set NFL records for fewest points allowed and fewest rushing yards allowed in a 16-game season. Lewis began his coaching career overseeing the linebackers at his alma mater, Idaho St., from He held the same position at Long Beach St. ( ) and New Mexico ( ) and coached outside linebackers at Pittsburgh from HEAD COACH COMPARISON CHICAGO CINCINNATI Lovie Smith Marvin Lewis (.565) Regular Season Record (pct.) 3 LAST GAME AGAINST CINCINNATI Cincinnati 24, Chicago 7 Sunday, September 25, Soldier Field CHICAGO -- In a matchup of the League's top offense against one of the NFL's stingiest defenses, the Cincinnati Bengals topped the Chicago Bears 24-7 at Soldier Field in Chicago. The Bengals entered the contest averaging 462 yards per game offensively while the Bears had allowed just 15 points in two games (7.5 ppg), which ranked fourth in the League. Chicago's defense limited the Bengals to 244 yards on offense, 218 yards below their season average, but six Chicago turnovers proved to be the difference in the game as the Bears were forced to defend a short field much of the afternoon. Bears rookie QB Kyle Orton threw five interceptions, the most by a Chicago quarterback since 1968, and the Bengals 16 possessions began, on average, at their own 42-yard line. Chicago's defense was up to the task most of the afternoon, forcing nine punts, three more than Cincinnati's total in the first two games of the season combined. The Bears defense forced a three-and-out on the game's first series and, following a punt, the tone for the remainder of the afternoon was set. Orton fired a pass to Justin Gage on the Bears first offensive play from scrimmage and the ball deflected off Gage into the arms of Bengals LB Brian Simmons. Cincinnati's offense took over from the Chicago 18 and on the very next play, Bengals QB Carson Palmer threw the first of his three touchdown passes and WR Chad Ochocinco was on the receiving end of his first of two on the day. Orton's second interception led to Cincinnati's second score. This time the Cincinnati offense was set up at the Chicago 36. Palmer threw for the end zone on the drive's second play and CB Charles Tillman was flagged for pass interference and the Bengals were awarded a first-and-goal from the Chicago 3. Following a pass for one yard and a negative rush, an offensive pass interference penalty backed the Bengals up to the Chicago 15 where they settled for a 33-yard Shayne Graham field goal and the first quarter would end with Cincinnati maintaining a 10-0 advantage. The Bears pieced together their longest drive of the first half with time winding down in the second quarter. RB Thomas Jones began the drive with back-to-back carries of 17 and 16 yards before a personal foul penalty on WR Mark Bradley eventually stalled the drive at the Cincinnati 21. K Doug Brien failed to convert a 39-yard field goal attempt to cap the sixplay drive and the score remained 10-0 at the half. Cincinnati extended the lead to 17-0 midway through the third quarter. Following Orton's fifth pick of the game, the Bengals drove 70 yards in seven plays capped by a 36-yard Palmer touchdown pass to WR Chris Henry. The Bears pieced together their longest drive of the day at the end of the third quarter, bridging a 14-play, 70-yard drive into the fourth quarter capped by a two-yard Jones TD run to cut the margin to Orton completed four of eight passes for 44 yards while Jones eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the second consecutive game during the drive. The comeback was short-lived however as Cincinnati drove 62 yards in three plays on the ensuing possession and scored on a 40-yard pass from Palmer to Johnson to put the Bengals back up by 17 points at Orton completed two quick passes and four of six attempts to cross over into Cincinnati territory on Chicago's ensuing drive, but, following a seven-yard completion to Bobby Wade, CB Keiwan Ratliff knocked the ball loose at the Cincinnati 29 which was scooped up by Deltha O'Neal to turn back the drive and preserve the win.
