The Sooners finished with a rebounding edge and outscored the Warhawks in the paint and 16-6 in second-chance points to move to 1-0 on the season. ULM junior guard Amos Olatayo had a stellar performance in his debut with the Warhawks, netting a game-high and career-high 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. The Bulldogs used a 21-0 run - spanning eight minutes - midway through the second half to build a 23-point advantage and cruise to its fifth straight victory. I thought Louisiana Tech wore us down (in the second half), ULM head coach Keith Richard said. The constant harassment and the constant pressure over the course of time finally wore us down and helped them build up a pretty big lead. Sophomore guard Trent Mackey came off the bench and netted a career-high 17 points to lead the Warhawks (0-2). Mackey finished 6 of 11 from the field and 3 of 5 from 3-point range to surpass his previous career high of 13 points, set twice last season. Junior guard R.J. McCray and junior forward Jayon James each finished with 10 points and four assists. Junior guard Amos Olatayo finished with a game-high nine rebounds to go along with seven points and three steals. Leading early in the second half, Louisiana Tech (5-1) used a strong defensive effort during a 21-0 run that stretched the lead to with 10:28 remaining. The Bulldogs used their quickness to force 13 steals and 21 turnovers in the game. ULM s 21 miscues were the most in a game since Nov. 16, 2010, when it had 26 against Iowa. The Warhawks trailed by as many as 23, but battled back to within as close as with 4:20 to play. ULM had the ball on two occasions to cut into the lead even more, but Olatayo missed on 3-pointers on both trips. Mackey carried the Warhawk offense in the second half as he accounted for 11 of the team s 24 points in the half. ULM led for much of first half after sprinting out to an early 8-2 advantage. The Warhawks led by as many as seven (17-10) midway through the opening half before Louisiana Tech went on a 7-0 spurt to tie the game. The Bulldogs closed the half on a 9-1 run, including a tip-in off a missed free throw by Cordarius Johnson with three seconds remaining in the half to take a lead at the break. However, FAU s Jackson Trapp knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to ignite a 9-0 run for the Owls. A 3-pointer by Gregg Gantt capped the run and gave the Owls a lead with 4:08 remaining. Olatayo scored on back-to-back possessions to tie the game at 67, but another 3-pointer -- this time by Pablo Bertone -- gave the Owls the lead for good. Gantt paced FAU with 19 points on 8-of-19 shooting, while Stefan Moody chipped in 16 points and Bertone finished with 13 points and seven rebounds for the Owls. The Warhawks put together their most productive first half of the season, shooting 65.4 percent (17-of-26) and netting a season-best 45 points before halftime. Olatayo scored 12 points in the half, including a pair of transition layups as part of an 8-2 run that gave ULM a lead with 9:12 remaining. FAU answered with a 7-0 run to tie game at 28 on a 3-pointer from Stefan Moody. The lead changed hands seven times before ULM reeled off 10 consecutive points to take a at the break. The Owls quickly erased the Warhawks lead with a 15-4 run to open the second half. FAU took its first lead of the second half on a jumper from Gantt with 12:46 remaining. A pair of free-throws from junior R.J. McCray, a 3-pointer from Mackey and two free throws from junior Marcelis Hansberry pushed ULM back in front with 10:37 to play. 01 James, J Hanberry, M McCray, R Mackey, T Olatayo, A, Koszuta, K Brown, M Lindsey, T TEAM 5 TOTALS (.391) (.263) (.615) No. Florida Atlantic FG 3FG FT R F TP A TO B S MIN 44 Penn, K Morrow, R Gantt, G Bertone, P Moody, S Sekelja, D Mattison, A Trapp, J McCoy, J TEAM 5 TOTALS (.452) (.350) (.565) Technical Fouls: Officials: Pat Adams, Karl Hess, Ray Natili Attendance: 1,376 ULM Florida Atlantic Game 18 Feb. 2, 2013 ULM...73 at Florida Atlantic...76 U.S. Century Bank Arena (Miami, Fla.) MIAMI -- FIU scored the final five points of the game to outlast ULM in a Sun Belt shootout on Saturday evening inside U.S. Century Bank Arena. The Warhawks (3-15, 2-10 SBC) shot 58 percent for the game -- including a blistering 70.4 percent in the second half -- and led by two points in the final minute before the Panthers (12-10, 7-6 SBC) rallied for the victory. With ULM leading 73-71, the Panthers Malik Smith converted a three-point play with 19 seconds remaining and Deric Hill came up with a timely steal and converted a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining to give FIU a threepoint advantage. Junior Jayon James had his game-tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer come up short as ULM dropped its seventh straight contest. The loss overshadowed a pair of monster performances for the Warhawks as junior Amos Olatayo finished with a career-high 30 points and eight rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. It marked the third straight game that Olatayo has scored 20-plus points and the sixth time this season. He becomes the first ULM player to score 30 points in a game since Tommie Sykes netted 32 against Union College on Jan. 4, James finished just shy of a triple-double with 11 points, nine rebounds and a career-high 15 assists in 40 minutes. James 15 assists were the second most in school history and the most since Larry Saulters recorded 19 assists against Mississippi College during the season. It was also the most assists by a player in the Sun Belt and tied for the sixth most in the NCAA this season. Sophomore Trent Mackey added 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range for ULM. Mackey nailed four 3-pointers in the second half to help the Warhawks rally from an eight-point deficit. Mackey converted a 3-pointer to tie the score at 71 and Olatayo raced down the floor for a transition layup to give the Warhawks a advantage with just over a minute remaining. ULM forced a stop on the other end and got the ball back with a chance to put the game away, but sophomore Trey Lindsey stepped out of bounds with 33 seconds left to give the ball back to FIU. Smith stepped up and drove the lane for a layup and a foul to give the Panthers the lead for good on FIU s next possession. Smith led four FIU players in double-digit scoring with 17 points. Tymel Murphy added 14 points, Jerome Frink chipped in 13 points and Marco Porcher Jimenez finished with 10 points for the Panthers. ULM and FIU traded runs in the first half, but it was the Panthers 12-3 spurt to close out the half that gave them a edge at the break. The Warhawks went up on a 3-pointer by Mackey with 14:06 remaining before FIU used an 11-2 run to take advantage -- its largest of the game -- with 8:16 to play. Four straight points by James and a jumper from Mackey cut the FIU lead to and the two teams went back-and-forth in the final six minutes. 01 James, J Hanberry, M McCray, R Mackey, T Olatayo, A, Koszuta, K Brown, M Lindsey, T TEAM 4 1 TOTALS (.580) (.438) (.667) No. FIU FG 3FG FT R F TP A TO B S MIN 01 Hill, D Porcher Jimenez, M Frink, J Murphy, T Smith, M Bell, C Belardo, G Ferrales, J Jurkovic, I Akomolafe, T TEAM 2 1 TOTALS (.482) (.333) (.737) Technical Fouls: ULM-, FIU-T.
