1 COACHING STAFF adam KRIKORIAN HEAD COACH th Year Alma Mater: UCLA 97 Career Record: (Nine years) There may not be another head coach in any sport throughout the country who has accomplished more than Adam Krikorian in such a short span. In his 16 years with UCLA s water polo program as both a player and a coach, Krikorian has won an unprecedented 13 national titles nine as a head coach, three as an assistant coach and one as a student-athlete. This spring, Krikorian enters his th season as head coach of the UCLA women s water polo team and his ninth alone at the helm. In 1999, he served as interim head coach while Guy Baker coached the U.S. Women s National Team. As women s water polo head coach, Krikorian has guided UCLA to six national championships (five NCAA titles) and boasts a remarkable.858 winning percentage ( record). Krikorian s women s water polo teams have won 88 percent of their conference matches and have finished with a perfect 12-0 MPSF record once (in 2005). A former standout on the men s water polo team from , Krikorian has earned National Women s Water Polo Coach of the Year honors four times in 2001, 2005, 2006 and Krikorian received National Men s Coach of the Year honors in 2004 after having led that men s squad to its eighth NCAA championship in program history. Last season, Krikorian led the women s team to its third consecutive NCAA championship, allowing UCLA to become the first university to win 0 NCAA team championships. The Bruins posted a 28-2 record, earning the MPSF Tournament title before winning the NCAA championship. Krikorian coached a talented team, led by Kelly Rulon, who broke UCLA s all-time scoring record (237 goals) before winning the coveted Peter J. Cutino Award, an honor bestowed upon the top women s and men s water polo athlete in the nation. The 2007 campaign marked the end of several illustrious careers under Krikorian s tutelage. Rulon and Emily Feher both concluded their careers at UCLA as four-time All-America selections, earning first-team All-America honors in 2005, 2006 and Both standout student-athletes were named thirdteam selections as freshmen Rulon in 2003 and Feher in Feher became the only goalkeeper in Bruin history to have competed on three national championship teams. Kacy Kunkel netted third-team All-America honors her senior season. UCLA s NCAA championship in May 2007 marked Krikorian s fourth national title since the start of the school year. Krikorian led the women s team to back-to-back championships in the spring of 2006, as UCLA registered a 29-4 overall record and an 11-1 MPSF mark. Marked by stellar defense, the 2006 Bruins held its opposition to 4.1 goals per game, the lowest average in the nation. Among the most memorable moments in UCLA water polo history, the Bruins defeated top-seeded USC in the NCAA Championship with a last-second goal by then-sophomore Courtney Mathewson. The start of UCLA s three-peat began in 2005, the last school year in which Krikorian led both the women s and men s water polo teams to NCAA titles. That spring, the Bruins enjoyed a season considered by many to be the greatest in the history of collegiate water polo. Led by Cutino Award winner Natalie Golda, UCLA rolled to a 33-0 overall record the second undefeated season in NCAA water polo history. Coaching a team that featured three Olympians (Golda, Kelly Rulon and Thalia Munro), Krikorian helped lead the Bruins to a 3-2 victory over Stanford in the 2005 NCAA Championship. 2 head coach adam krikorian Earlier that school year, Krikorian guided the men s team to its best winning percentage since The 2004 men s squad registered a perfect 8-0 MPSF mark and rattled off an 18-game win streak, which included the NorCal Tournament title and multiple victories over Stanford, California and USC. In 2003, Krikorian and the women s water polo team made their fourth consecutive appearance at the national championship contest and won the third national title in program history. UCLA finished the season with a 24-4 overall mark, including an 8-2 conference record. With an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Bruins cruised past Loyola Marymount in the semifinals before overcoming a 2-0 deficit in the title match to defeat Stanford, 4-3. In just his third year at the helm, Krikorian guided the Bruins to the inaugural NCAA title in 2001 UCLA s second consecutive national championship. Krikorian coached standout seniors Coralie Simmons and Kristin Guerin that spring, just months after having led the men s water polo team to its second straight NCAA title. In 2000, Krikorian led the Bruins to the national championship in just his first season as the program s sole head coach. After having coached alongside Guy Baker in 1999, Krikorian made sure the women s program did not skip a beat. The Bruins posted a 30-5 overall record in 2000 after having finished 24- in Krikorian was promoted to Co-Head Coach prior to the 1999 women s season. The former Bruin standout served as an assistant to the women s team in 1997 and 1998 and to the men s team from 1996 through During the school year, Krikorian served as a student assistant coach as he completed his undergraduate studies, assisting Baker in leading both squads to national championships. As a senior captain in 1995, Krikorian helped lead UCLA to its first men s water polo national championship since Krikorian scored two goals in the Bruins -8 win over California in the NCAA championship game. During his senior season, he registered a team-best 31 goals, including one two-pointer, while earning second-team All-America honors and second-team All-MPSF accolades. A four-year letterman, Krikorian captained the team in 1994 and 1995, leading the Bruins to the NCAA Tournament in each of those seasons. He finished his Bruin career with 76 goals, including a pair of two-pointers. Krikorian was named Most Inspirational Player by his teammates in each of his last three seasons. A standout prep athlete at Mountain View High School, Krikorian was a four-year letterman in water polo and swimming. As a senior, he scored 113 goals and earned honorable mention All-America accolades. In 1992, he helped lead his team to the National Junior Olympic Championship. Krikorian s older brother, Blake, was on the UCLA water polo team from Krikorian, 33, graduated from UCLA with a psychology degree and a business administration emphasis in June In May 2001, Krikorian married Anicia Mendez, a fouryear Bruin letterwinner in tennis who completed her MBA at UCLA. Adam and Anicia reside in Manhattan Beach, Calif., with their son, Jack (born July 2006). 3 ASSISTANT COACHES ASSISTANT COACH 2nd Year Alma Mater: UCLA 02 matt FLESHER brandon BROOKS ASSISTANT COACH 2nd Year Alma Mater: UCLA 05 Matt Flesher enters his second season as an assistant coach for the UCLA women s water polo team. Flesher, a three-time All-America selection at UCLA from , helped coach the Bruins to the 2007 NCAA Championship and a 28-2 overall mark last spring. Last spring, Flesher guided one of the most dominant Bruin teams, leading UCLA to its third consecutive NCAA women s water polo title. The Bruins shattered the program record for most goals per game, averaging 14.0 points each match. Flesher has also served as an assistant coach with the men s water polo team the past three seasons. In that span, UCLA has registered a mark. In his four-year playing career at UCLA, Flesher led UCLA s men s water polo team to backto-back national championships (1999 and 2000). He was twice honored as an All-MPSF selection and finished his collegiate career with 81 goals scored. Prior to returning to Westwood in 2005, Flesher kept busy within the international water polo ranks. He spent three seasons as a full-time member of the U.S. National Team in 2002, 2003 and 2005 and also competed for professional Greek team Ethnikos-Pireaus in 2003 and Flesher also served as an assistant coach at Corona Del Mar High School in 2004 and helped lead the SeaKings to a CIF-SS Division I semifinal appearance. With the National Team, Flesher competed in the World University Games in 2003 and helped guide Team USA to its qualification for the 2005 Water Polo World Championships. Flesher enjoyed his finest playing season at UCLA as a sophomore (2000), tallying a careerhigh 32 goals while adding 14 assists and 16 steals. An honorable mention All-America selection that fall, Flesher led UCLA to its second consecutive NCAA championship. Among the most defining moments that season included Flesher scoring the game-winning goal against California in the MPSF Tournament title game. A newcomer to Westwood in 1999, the Diamond Bar, Calif. native added eight goals to UCLA s 22-3 NCAA title-winning team. Flesher earned third-team All-America honors as a junior (2001) after totaling 24 goals, the third-highest total on the team. As a senior in 2002, Flesher again gained third-team All-America honors after notching 17 goals and serving as UCLA s emotional leader and co-captain. His most noted offensive performance of that season came in the third-place match of the MPSF Tournament, when he led all scorers with three goals to lead UCLA over top-ranked Stanford. Flesher earned UCLA s Jack Bariteau Most Inspirational Player Award following the 2002 season. Flesher, 27, earned his degree in political science from UCLA in Brandon Brooks begins his second year as an assistant coach on the women s water polo staff. The former UCLA standout helped lead the Bruins to the 2007 NCAA Championship in his first season with the women s team. Last season, Brooks work with goalkeeper Emily Feher proved instrumental to the Bruins championship season. Feher recorded a 4.96 goals against average in 25 games before earning first-team All-America accolades for the third consecutive season. In 2008, Brooks will continue to focus his efforts on the development of goalkeepers. Junior Brittany Fullen takes over as the Bruins starting goalkeeper, and freshman Morgan Ronimus will see action in her first season. Brooks has served as an assistant coach on the men s water polo team in 2004, 2006 and As an undergraduate assistant coach in 2004, Brooks helped Joe Axelrad develop into one of the nation s premier goalkeepers, leading UCLA to the NCAA title that fall. A three-time All-America selection at UCLA and former Olympic goalkeeper, Brooks led the Bruins to NCAA championships in 1999 and 2000 as UCLA s goalkeeper, all while becoming UCLA s all-time saves leader with 700 stops. In the summer of 2004, Brooks and former UCLA teammates Adam Wright and Brett Ormsby competed for Team USA in the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. One year earlier, the Honolulu, Hawaii, native provided stellar defense as goalkeeper for the U.S. National Team at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Following the 2003 World Championships, Brooks competed at the Pan-American Games, where Team USA took the gold medal and ultimately qualified for the 2004 Olympics. As a freshman (1999), Brooks totaled 0 saves in quarters. His 5.60 goals against average that season currently ranks second all-time in the school s record books. The following season, Brooks recorded 208 saves in 95 quarters and posted a school-best 4.80 goals against average, a mark which still ranks first today. Coming off back-to-back national championships at the start of the 2001 season, Brooks led UCLA to a No. 5 final national ranking as a junior. His 5.96 goals against average that season stands as the fifth-best mark in school history. A senior in 2002, Brooks made 227 saves in 79 quarters to earn All-America honors after guiding the Bruins to a third-place finish in the MPSF Tournament. The oldest of three children, Brooks, 26, has 22 year-old twin sisters (Nicole and Jessica). He graduated with a degree in sociology from UCLA in sam BAILEY ASSISTANT COACH 1st Year Alma Mater: UCLA 00 molly CAHILL UNDERGRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH 1st Year UCLA 08 Sam Bailey enters his first season as an assistant coach on the UCLA women s water polo team after having served as an assistant coach on the 2007 men s water polo team. Bailey returned to his alma mater after having been a part of two NCAA championship teams (1996, 1999) while at UCLA. In addition to daily coaching duties, Bailey has headed efforts to update UCLA s water polo alumni network. In addition to reconnecting with former players and their families, Bailey s work will help improve communication between current student-athletes and former players. His efforts will establish a career mentoring program for current water polo studentathletes, allowing them to seek job opportunities upon graduation. Bailey served as an assistant coach on the Stanford men s water polo staff in The former Bruin was the head coach of the boys water polo team at Corona Del Mar High School in 2004, when he earned CIF Coach of the Year honors. While at Corona del Mar, current assistant coach and former UCLA teammate Matt Flesher worked with Bailey as an assistant coach. Bailey also served as assistant coach of the girls water polo team at Corona del Mar High School from Bailey, 30, graduated from UCLA in 2000 with a degree in geography. He was born and raised in San Clemente, Calif. Molly Cahill enters her first season on the women s water polo coaching staff, serving as an undergraduate assistant in Cahill, a four-year letterwinner for the Bruins from , was an instrumental contributor on three NCAA Championship teams (2005, 2006 and 2007). Cahill played in all 123 matches in her four seasons at UCLA, recording 95 goals, 56 assists and 6 steals. As a senior in 2007, she totaled 26 goals on 52 attempts, adding 12 steals and 11 assists. Midway through the season, Cahill scored in nine consecutive games, a streak highlighted by two four-point efforts. A strong performer in the pool and in the classroom, Cahill earned academic honors in each of her final three seasons. Cahill was named an MPSF All-Academic Team honoree as a sophomore, junior and senior. She earned ACWPC All-Academic Team accolades as an outstanding selection her sophomore year. Cahill arrived at UCLA from Santa Barbara High School, where she was a four-year water polo and swimming letterwinner. Cahill finished her high school career as the school s leader in assists, leading the Dons to CIF Championships in 2000, 2002 and Cahill, 22, is expected to graduate from UCLA with a degree in history in June UCLA WOMEN S WATER POLO
