3 QUICK HITS LSU finally will be playing its first home matches of 2008 in the Maravich Center this weekend. There will be a different look for fans once inside, with new seating configurations for the matches. (page 4). LSU early season schedule has had to be adjusted due to effects of hurricane Gustav. Instead of playing host to the Tiger Classic, the Tigers played in the McNeese Invitational in Lake Charles, La. This is not the first time a hurricane has effected LSU volleyball, however. (page 4). Senior Milan Clarke paced the Lady Vol offense with 22 kills in the two contests, while junior Kylie Marshall and sophomore Nikki Fowler posted 21 and 20, respectively. Defensively, junior libero Chloe Goldman continued her dominance and was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for a second straight week OPPONENT COMPARISONS K/S PCT. A/S SA/S D/S B/S Tennessee LSU LSU-TENNESSEE SERIES RECORD: LSU leads, KENTUCKY OPPONENT NOTES UK opened SEC play in thrilling fashion defeating Alabama and Mississippi State both by 3-0 margins. It is the first time since 1989 that UK opened conference play with two sweeps of their opponents. The Wildcats have also stretched their winning streak to eight straight matches, the longest such streak since Sophomore Sarah Mendoza was the spark for UK all weekend, pacing the team in points and kills in both wins. She tallied 27 kills for the weekend on a.324 clip OPPONENT COMPARISONS K/S PCT. A/S SA/S D/S B/S Kentucky LSU LSU-KENTUKCY SERIES RECORD: Kentucky leads, LAST TIME OUT The LSU Tigers had a tough opening weekend of SEC play, first being swept by South Carolina in Columbia and then losing 3-1 to Florida in Gainesville. Against USC, no LSU player recorded double-figure kills, as Lauren DeGirolamo s nine were tops on the team. Setter Sam Dabbs added a team-leading 12 digs and four kills to her 28 assists, good enough for her third double-double this year. By collecting 10 digs, senior libero Elena Martinez moved into eighth place all-time in career digs in Tigers history. Against the Gators, the Tigers managed to take a win in the third set, but their final marks of.115 and 43 kills were not enough. Kyna Washington and Lauren DeGirolamo both posted double-figure kills for the Tigers with 12 and 10, respectively. DeGirolamo also led the team in hitting efficiency with a.381 clip. Brittney Johnson had her best match of the year at setter, dishing out 32 assists and collecting eight digs defensively. That was second to only senior Libero Elena Martinez, who recorded 10. Brittnee Cooper s six blocks at the net led LSU as well. LSU VS. WEEKEND OPPONENTS The Tigers have been matched fairly evenly with both of this weekend s opponents as of late. LSU leads the all-time series with Tennessee, 29-16, but the teams split decisions in 2007, each winning on its home court. While LSU swept the Lady Vols in Baton Rouge, however, it took Tennessee a score in game five to win in Knoxville. The Tigers also beat a ranked Tennessee twice in 2006 while at No. 13 and No. 25. In fact, UT has not beaten LSU in Baton Rouge since While Kentucky leads the overall series with the Tigers, 24-21, that series also was split in 2007, both teams winning the match at home in five games. The WIldcats have not won in Baton Rouge since FINALLY AT HOME, NEW PMAC CONFIGURATION This weekend s matches will be the first the Tigers are playing in the friendly confines of the Maravich Center in 2008 after having their home tournament canceled because of Hurricane Gustav. There have been several changes put in place for volleyball matches in the PMAC this year. Seating for volleyball matches from now on will be limited to the lower bowl of the Maravich Center in the 100 sections only. Doors open an hour and a half before each match, and fans with general admission tickets should enter through the lower southeast, southwest and northwest entrances only instead of on the concourse level as in previous years. Credentialed personnel should enter through the lower northeast corridor. Ticket sales and will call will be in outside ticket windows at the southwest corridor as will the fan zone and merchandise tables. The ticket booth will remain open through the second set of all matches. Students and faculty using ID cards as well as those on the player pass list to enter volleyball matches are to use this southwest entrance.

5 For families coming to experience LSU volleyball, the Kid Zone will be located on the floor level of the northwest corridor TIGERS PART OF NCAA ATTENDANCE HISTORY Although they were on the losing end of the match, the Tigers were part of NCAA attendance history in their match at No. 2 Nebraska. The 13,412 fans that were on hand in the Devaney Center were an NCAA regular-season volleyball record. GUSTAV CANCELS TIGER CLASSIC LSU was supposed to play host to the Mizuno Tiger Classic on Sept. 5-6 against Rice, Southeast Missouri State and Louisiana Tech. Hurricane Gustav had other plans. The Maravich Center was taken over days before the storm and still is being used as a special needs medical center. The Tigers instead made a late entry into the McNeese Invitational in Lake Charles, La., where they swept matches against in-state rivals Nicholls State and McNeese State. This is not the first time a hurricane has forced the LSU volleyball team to alter plans, as the Tigers were forced to play their first 17 matches on the road in 2005 in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. LSU was on the road 26 of 46 days during that stretch and traveled nearly 10,000 miles. LSU VS. This week they are No. 31. Despite winning both of their matches in the McNeese Invitational, the Tigers went from No. 24 in the polls to being unranked. They began the season at No. 21 and fell to 24th after a 2-1 weekend that included a loss to then-no. 16 Minnesota, which is currently ranked 12th. TRIPLE-THREAT SETTER In her first match at LSU, transfer setter SAM DABBS recorded a triple-double with 48 assists, 10 kills and 14 digs. It was the first triple-double for any Tiger since Regan Hood on Oct. 31, She was also just two kills shy of posting another against McNeese State only four matches later. DEGIROLAMO, WASHINGTON UP IN RECORD BOOK With her season-best eight-block effort against Texas A&M, LAUREN DEGIROLAMO moved into ninth place all-time in LSU history for career blocks. Currently with 408, the junior middle blocker needs just six to overtake eighth place. Senior outside hitter KYNA WASHINGTON moved into 10th place all-time in career kills in LSU history and needs just 46 more for 1,300 in her career, which would also tie her with Julie Stempel for ninth place all-time. MARTINEZ GRABS CAREER DIG 1,000 With her 20th dig against Georgia on Nov. 16 of 2007, ELENA MARTINEZ broke the 21-year-old SEC singleseason digs record with her 656th. Martinez had previously broken the LSU single-season mark with her 536th against Kentucky on Nov. 2. She finished with 740 for the year, the first player in SEC history to record 700 digs in a season, topping the record of Shelly Gross of Georgia s mark of 655 and the LSU record of 535 set by Kassi Mikulik in With her 11th dig against St. John s this year, Martinez recorded her 1,000th career dig, one of only eight LSU players to accomplish that feat in program history. She also has moved into eighth place alltime in career digs in Tiger history and needs just 72 more to bump up one more spot to seventh place. TIGER HONORED BY SEC Following her performance in the Bluejay Invitational that included a 31-dig output against Texas A&M, ELENA MARTINEZ was honored as the SEC s Defensive Player of the Week. It was the first SEC honor for the Tigers this season and the third weekly honor of Martinez s career, who also was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year in SCHATOW SETS NEW HIGHS LSU Coach Fran Flory has said going into the 2008 campaign that sophomore TANIA SCHATOW has shown more improvement from one season to the next than possibly any other player she has ever coached. Schatow responded in the first five matches of the year by posting new career-highs in every major category. She currently is third on the team in blocks with 27 and had a career-best eight blocks in the season-opener against Texas A&M. She also has posted a career-best eight kills four times this season. WE RE GOING TO FIVE... LSU has continued its trend of playing five-set matches early in the season, with both of the first two wins coming in 3-2 decisions. Last year, LSU played an astounding 12 five-game matches in 31 outings, meaning the Tigers played 14 five-set matches out of 36 at one point. They have won 10 of those while only dropping four. In 2007, the Tigers went 8-4 in five-framers, with three of the four losses coming on the road in SEC play as a string of four-straight losses on the road in the SEC in October. Twice last season, LSU went to five in both meetings with a team. The Tigers defeated Alabama twice in five games, including the first win in the CAVE for LSU since 2001, while splitting a pair of five-game matches with Kentucky, with each team winning the home contest.

LSU VS. RANKED TEAMS The Tigers have lost to all three ranked opponents they have faced in LSU dropped its first match against a ranked opponent this year, falling 3-0 to No. 16 Minnesota in the Bluejay Invitational. They also fell to No. 2 Nebraska, 3-0, in the Ameritas Players Challenge. The last defeat was at No. 11 Florida on Sept. 21. The Tigers did defeat Texas A&M, however, which was not in the Top 25 but was the 34th team receiving votes. They also defeated St. John s, then receiving votes in the poll at No. 32. LSU lost both matches it played last season against nationally ranked teams, falling in four games to then No. 6 Florida at home, 3-1, and was swept by No. 10 Florida in Gainesville. TIGERS IN 08 TOURNEYS The Tigers played in three tournaments in 2008 before opening the SEC slate. The first was the Bluejay Invitational hosted by Creighton in Omaha, Neb. LSU went 2-1 on the weekend, winning five-setters over Texas A&M and Creighton and dropping a contest to then-no. 16 Minnesota. Elena Martinez and Brittnee Cooper were selected to the all-tournament team. The Tigers next took place in the McNeese Invitational, sweeping both matches against in-state rivals Nicholls State and McNeese State. No Tigers were eligible for the all-tournament team because of the late addition due to hurricane Gustav. Finally, LSU competed in the Ameritas Players Challenge hosted by Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. The Tigers went 1-1, first losing to No. 2 Nebraska but then rebounding to defeat St. John s. Elena Martinez and Kyna Washington were part of the all-tournament team for their efforts. TIGERS PICKED TO WIN WEST, LAND THREE ON PRESEASON ALL-SEC TEAM Thee Tigers were unanimously picked by the SEC Coaches to win the SEC West title for the fourth year in a row. All 10 coaches voted for LSU to sit atop the division, while the Tigers also received three votes to win the overall league title. Florida, who has won the SEC for 17 consecutive years, received all but one first-place vote in the East and had seven votes to the coaches prediction for overall league champion an 18th straight year. In addition to team predictions, LSU also had three student-athletes selcted as part of the preseason All-SEC team, more than any other school in the league. LAUREN DEGIROLAMO, ELENA MARTINEZ and KYNA WASHINGTON all received that honor. LSU SET TO DEFEND THREE STRAIGHT SEC WESTERN DIVISION TITLES LSU captured its third straight SEC Western Division title and second straight outright championship in The Tigers finished 15-5 in the conference, one game ahead of Ole Miss in the West and four games behind Florida overall. The Tigers claimed the outright SEC Western Division title in 2006 after sharing the championship with Arkansas in Since the SEC went to the divisional format in 1995, LSU had finished as high as second on three occasions, but never won before The last time LSU won an SEC title was when the Tigers won three straight overall championships from TIGERS RETURN FOUR ALL-SEC PERFORMERS LSU had four players named to the 2007 All-SEC teams, which was the second most of any school in the league (Florida led with six).elena MARTINEZ was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and was an All-SEC second-team selection. Junior KYNA WASHINGTON and sophomore LAUREN DEGIROLAMO were named to the All-SEC first team, while ANGELA BENSEND earned SEC All-Freshman team honors. It marks the second-straight year that the LSU placed two players on the All-SEC first team. LSU WELCOMES THREE NEWCOMERS The Tigers roster will feature three new faces in 2008 in SAM DABBS, LAUREN WACLWACZYK AND MICHELE WILLIAMS. Dabbs, a junior, is a setter who transferred from Louisville. As a sophomore, the San Antonio native guided the Cardinals to a 22-8 record last season. She led the team with assists per game, while leading the Cardinals to a.282 team hitting percentage. Waclawczyk, out of Floresville, Texas, led Poth HS to the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Class 2A Texas state championship and was named the MVP in District 29AA and the San Antonio Express News Super Team. Williams, who graduated high school early and trained with the team in the spring, was a standout outside hitter for Magnolia High School in Magnolia, Texas where she earned first-team all-state honors in 2006 and THE GOLD STANDARD In a promotion dubbed the Gold Game, the LSU volleyball team broke the single-match volleyball attendance record against South Carolina on Sept. 21 of last year. The Tiger faithful clad all in gold topped 2,300 as LSU shattered the previous record of an estimated 2,250 against Kentucky in With an attendance of 2,308, LSU marked its third 2,000-plus attendance in school history and the first since the 1992 record. Along with the 920 that attended the match against Florida the following Sunday, the 13th largest attendance in

7 school history, and the two-day Mizuno Tiger Classic to start the year, the Tigers averaged 992 in attendance last year, the largest average attendance in Fran Flory s 10-year tenure.
