The 62nd NBA All-Star Game will take place on Sunday, February 17 at 8:00 pm EST in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center. Here s a few notes on the guard s All-Star berth: Irving is the 16th All-Star in Cavaliers history, joining John Johnson (1971, 1972), Butch Beard (1972), Lenny Wilkens (1973), Austin Carr (1974), Campy Russell (1979), Mike Mitchell (1981), Brad Daugherty (1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993), Larry Nance (1989, 1993), Mark Price (1989, 1992, 1993, 1994), Tyrone Hill (1995), Terrell Brandon (1996, 1997), Shawn Kemp (1998), Zydrunas Ilgauskas (2003, 2005), LeBron James ( ) and Mo Williams (2009). He is the sixth-youngest player ever named to an All-Star team (20 years, 331 days) and one of seven to make it before turning 21. (Elias) Irving is currently averaging 23.7 points per game (1st in the NBA among point guards) on.469 shooting, to go along with 5.5 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 35.6 minutes per game. He is one of only two players in the East averaging at least 20 points and five assists. Irving won the Eastern Conference Player of the Week (Jan ) after scoring at least 30 points in three straight games to become only the fifth player in NBA history to register three straight 30-point games before his 21st birthday (John Drew, Bernard King, LeBron James and Kevin Durant). Irving has scored at least 30 points in eight of his last 15 games since Jan. 4, averaging 25.9 points over that stretch. 40 AGAIN: Kyrie Irving notched his second career 40-point game after finishing with a game-high 40 points on (.667) shooting from the field, five assists and two steals in 38 minutes in a win over the Boston Celtics on Jan. 22. Irving scored 19 in the first quarter, which was his most scored in an opening period on his career (previous 16 points at LA Clippers on November 5, 2012). At the age of 20 years, 305 days old, Irving became the youngest player to ever score 40 points in a game against the Celtics. (Elias) TURN IT OVER: At Denver on Jan. 11 and at the Lakers on Jan. 13, the Cavs forced 22 turnovers in consecutive games for the first time since Nov , 2005 (vs. Memphis 22, at Orlando 23). The last time Cleveland forced 22 miscues or more in two consecutive road games was Nov , 1997 (at Philadelphia 24, at Charlotte 25). On the season, the Cavs have forced at least 20 turnovers eight times and rank 5th in the NBA in opponent turnovers per game (15.6). They have forced at least 19 turnovers in four of their last eight road games and are averaging 16.0 opponent miscues on the road this season (2nd in the NBA). DION HEATS UP BENCH: Against the Kings on Jan. 14, Dion Waiters scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and finished with a career-high 33 points on (.667) shooting and added five assists in 29 minutes off the bench. It was Waiters first career 30-point game and only the second 30-point game among all NBA rookies this season (Damian Lillard, 37 pts on Jan. 11 at GSW). Waiters is just the third rookie in Cavaliers history to score at least 30 points off the bench, joining Mike Mitchell (32 pts on Jan. 6, 1979) and Derek Anderson (30 pts on April 3, 1998). The last NBA rookie to score 30 points off the bench was Roddy Beaubois (40 pts on March 27, 2010). (Elias) 400 CLUB: The victory over Charlotte on Jan. 4 gave Byron Scott his 400th victory of his NBA head-coaching career. Scott, who won 693 games as an NBA player (for the Lakers, Pacers and Grizzlies), joined Doc Rivers as the only current head coaches to win at least 400 games as both a coach and as a player. In NBA history, six other men have done that: Tom Heinsohn, Phil Jackson, K.C. Jones, Nate McMillan, Don Nelson and Lenny Wilkens. (Elias) RARE NUMBERS: In a win at Charlotte on Jan. 4, Kyrie Irving scored 16 points in the final period, including the game-winning jump shot with one second remaining to seal the Cavs victory. It marked Irving s fourth career game-winning shot as he finished the night with a game-high 33 points, including shooting from the free throw line, five rebounds, six assists, a YOUNGEST NBA ALL-STARS 1. Miles became the first player in Cavaliers history to make eight triples off the bench after nailing a franchise record-tying 8-10 (.800) shots from behind the three-point line and finishing with a season-high 33 points on (.733) shooting in 34 minutes. LeBron James (2/20/09 at MIL), Danny Ferry (2/13/1996 vs. CHA) and Wesley Person (2/17/1998 at PHI) also made eight three-pointers but did it in the starting role. The last Cavs player to score 30 or more points off the bench was Ramon Sessions on 2/16/11 (32 points vs. LAL). Just 15 days after Miles scored 33 points off the bench, Dion Waiters also poured in 33 points as a reserve on Jan. 14 against the Kings. PERFECTION: Versus Atlanta on Dec. 28, Cleveland shot a perfect from the charity stripe. It marked the first time the Cavs shot perfect from the foul line since February 16, 1999, when Cleveland made shots against Orlando. 41 AT THE GARDEN: On Dec. 15 against the New York Knicks, Kyrie Irving scored 17 of the Cavs final 22 points en route to a career-high 41 points on (.600) shooting from field. Irving also became the first Cavs player to notch 40 points since April 4, 2010 (LeBron James, 42 points at BOS) and the sixth youngest active player to score 40 in a game behind LeBron James (19 years, 88 days on 03/27/04), Kevin Durant (19 years, 200 days on 04/16/08), Carmelo Anthony (19 years, 306 days on 03/30/04), Eric Gordon (20 years, 29 days on 01/23/09) and Brandon Jennings (20 years, 52 days on 11/14/09). TOO MANY MILES: After putting up back-to-back 28-point games and making at least five three-pointers in each (five triples on Dec. 11 vs. LAL and six triples on Dec. 12 at IND), C.J. Miles became the only Cleveland player since to score 28-plus points and make five or more threes in consecutive games. Also since , only three other Cavs have scored 25-plus points in their first two starts of a season: John Hot Rod Williams (25 at POR on 11/13/92 and 27 at SAC on 11/15/92), Terrell Brandon (25 at NJN on 11/01/96 and 31 at WAS on 11/02/96) and LeBron James (26 vs. WAS on 11/01/06 and 35 at SAS on 11/03/06). (Elias) Here are a few more key notes on Varejao s season: Varejao is the first Cavs player in franchise history to have 10 straight games of at least 15 rebounds (Nov. 18 Dec. 5). The last player in the NBA to have 10 straight games with 15 or more rebounds was Kevin Love (10 games in November/December 2010). When the game was knotted at with 4:29 remaining, the Syracuse product made consecutive triples to give the Cavs the lead for good. Waiters, who was playing in his fourth career game, is the first player in NBA history to have seven or more three-pointers in one of his first six games. He is also the first Cavs rookie to make seven three-pointers in a game and the first rookie to make at least seven triples in a game since Mavericks guard Rodrigue Beaubois made a rookie record nine triples on 3/27/2010. Waiters made at least one three-pointer in each of his first 13 games of his career (10/30/12 11/24/12) and is one of three players in league history to have started their careers with 10-ormore consecutive games with a three-point field goal (Damian Lillard, Rudy Fernandez).
