1 February 14, 2011 Pride & Tradition: An Appraisal of BLS by Otto F. Kraushaar Otto F. Kraushaar conducted a study of BL in 1973 at the request of the Boys Latin School Board of Trustees. Dr. Kraushaar was the former president of the Goucher College in Towson, Maryland from 1948 to 1967, when he retired. He was credited with supervising Goucher's move in 1956 from Baltimore city to its new Towson campus. Under his leadership Goucher worked out of its financial difficulties and emerged as a nationally ranked college. Here are just a few of his written observations: This report presents a general evaluation of the Boys Latin School, Baltimore, Maryland, undertaken at the request of the planning committee of the board of trustees..the growth since 1962 under the leadership of Jack H. Williams has been particularly striking..all in all, the record of growth and development of Boys Latin during the decade is one in which everyone associated with the institution can take well-founded pride. When one considers that the school barely escaped extinction in 1959, the fact that it is today a thriving institution with its trustees and supporters now growing more ambitious for its future is truly a miracle The distinctive thing about the educational goal of Boys Latin is the strong emphasis it gives to the concern of the individual student and his development of a sense of self-worth. Unlike many other independent schools which have given much lip-service to the pursuit of excellence conceived chiefly in terms of academic scholarship, the headmaster and catalog of Boys Latin stress the importance of a humane education, the qualities of heart and mind that lead to respect for oneself and others, the openness of mind that makes it receptive to new truth and sensitive to others. Scholarship is stressed by the school, but rather than being the end-all and be-all education, scholarship is seen as the cultivation of one trait - albeit a central one of human beings who are striving to grow to maturity in human as well as intellectual dimensions... Pride & Tradition Part II: Calvin H. Goddard 07 With Valentine s Day upon us, the Baltimore Sun decided it appropriate to profile BL alumnus Calvin Goddard 07 yesterday. 2 The 50th Anniversary Year on Lake Avenue Gala will be celebrated on April 2, Invites were mailed to everyone last week and space is limited. Reserve your seat today. BL Family Golf Outing The Boys' Latin Golf Outing is scheduled for Friday, April 15 th at the Elkridge Golf Course just blocks from BL on North Charles Street. Once again the event will start in the morning and after golf lunch will be served. The cost will remain the same as last year - $150 per golfer ($600 per foursome.) We are also hoping that members of the BL family will consider helping the tournament by sponsoring a hole. The cost is $150 per hole sponsor. Please make checks out to the BL Alumni Association along with the names of your foursome. Mark your calendars and spread the word. The golf outing is open to everyone in the BL family!

3 Annual Fund The Boys' Latin Alumni/Development Office would like to challenge everyone who was taught by J. Marshall Bruce to consider doubling from last year their annual fund UNRESTRICTED gift in his honor. For those of you who didn't participate last year we ask that you consider an UNRESTRICTED gift this year in memory of a great BL teacher and friend. We hope most of our Alumni from will remember Mr. Bruce and THINK BL FIRST! Alumni Notes Dave Brown 06 is living in Boston and working for a web agency called Verndale as a Project Manager. He is also freelancing. To view his work, go to BL Athletics BL s basketball team started the week on fire. The Lakers avenged an earlier double-overtime loss to Severn with a blow-out win over the Little Admirals. On Wednesday the Lakers traveled to Annapolis Area Christian. The Lakers played well but eventually lost by 11 points. On Friday BL finished the season with a home game against Pallotti. The Lakers played hard but finally lost to the bigger Panthers Seniors Wells Stanwick 11, Jeremy Freeman 11, Adam Davey 11, Jack Durkee 11, and Jahsaan Hamilton 11 all played their final game in a BL basketball uniform. The Boys' Latin wrestling team traveled to Mt. St. Joe this past weekend to participate in the MIAA Wrestling tournament. Eight BL wrestlers advanced to the quarter finals, and two of our wrestlers took home medals. BL finished the tournament in 10 th place.

4 At 112 lbs. Freshman Danny Shaifer 14 (above left) placed 4th and at 130 lbs. senior captain Michael Floccare 11 (above right) also finished in 4th place. Lacrosse Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium The Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T on March 12th will feature a college lacrosse triple header: Syracuse vs. Georgetown, Virginia vs. Cornell, and Johns Hopkins vs. UMBC. BL has been given excellent seats at a reduced cost of $15 per ticket (walk up price will be $22.) Tickets will be available in the BL book store. This is a great opportunity to see some wonderful lacrosse in great seats. Laker alumni will participate in all three games including David Shriver 06(Georgetown), Brett Weiss 07 (Georgetown), Jack Dudley 07 (Cornell), Chris Boland 06(Johns Hopkins), Aaron Verardi 09(UMBC), Jake Zimmerman 09 (UMBC), Conor Finch 10(UMBC), Marcellus Preston 10 (UMBC), and Michael Kantz 10 (UMBC.) Homecoming 2011 Homecoming 2011 will take place the weekend of April 29th and 30th. The Homecoming luncheon on Friday the 29th will be followed by a varsity lacrosse game against MIAA rival St. Mary's of Annapolis. At the luncheon BL will recognize and honor all of the school's valedictorians from the past. We hope to have a great crowd. This year will honor two more BL graduates as Distinguished Alumni: Tom Mitchell 56 and Bob Craven 61. Unfortunately, Bob passed away a few years ago but we hope to have his wife Carol along with the entire Class of 1961 here for the ceremony. Also that day, three former teachers will be given Honorary Alumni status by the Alumni Association: Ridge Warfield, Jim Potter, and Nick Nicolls. All former students of these three BL men are urged to attend the luncheon. The x1 and x6 graduating classes will be celebrating their reunion years. The Brevard Street Alumni will once again have a reception dinner in the Alumni House on April 30th, They will be joined by the Class of 1961 (their 50 th Reunion Anniversary) and by the Class of 1966 (45 th Reunion.)

Please RSVP today at 80 Years Ago The Inkwell reported the Labor Loafers, BLS only fraternity was reorganizing. Meetings were now going to be held every Tuesday. The fraternity would now have regulations and rules for all the undertakings. 70 Years Ago Mr. Watson Pindell was leaving BL after over 11 years f service and being replaced by Mr. W. Neal Grubb, a Washington & Lee University graduate and by Mr. Gerstell Smith 34, a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, who also studied extensively in Germany in The Inkwell also reported that the Alumni defeated the varsity basketball team Bill Van Horn 38, at the time a student at Johns Hopkins, was the high scorer in the game. Other members of the alumni squad included Mickey Darrell 31, Joe King 37, Lynn Cecil 40, Jack Dunn 39, George Riepe 40, Fred Ohrenschall 40, and Mace LeBrun Years Ago Boys Latin s basketball team captured TWO league titles, winning the Interstate Academic Conference (IAC) title and later the Maryland Scholastic Association (MSA) B Conference crown. The Latinists finished the season 19-4, losing only to Calvert Hall, Mt. St. Joe, McDonogh, and Lawrenceville (New Jersey.) In the MSA tournament BL defeated the defending champions Towson Catholic and then defeated Friends easily for the title. In the championship game Pat Walker 47 snared 25 rebounds and scored 20 points. Jim Gray 46 led all scorers with 22 points. The IAC didn t have an end of season tournament. BL defeated all of the conference teams during the regular season including St. James (Hagerstown,) St. Alban s (D.C.), Friends School (Baltimore), Sanford (Delaware), and St. Andrew s (Delaware.) The other starters with Gray and Walker were Don Hahn 47, John Fales 46, and Don Clausen 47. Fales served as the team s captain. 40 Years Ago The varsity basketball team was in first place in the Maryland Scholastic Association (MSA) C Conference. The Lakers had a one game lead over John Carroll with just three league games to go. This season, there would be no playoffs. The team championship would be based strictly on the league record. On February 12, 1971, BL hosted the Park School Bruins. BL came out cold, unable to hit many shots and by halftime trailed by ten points The third quarter was no better and park increased its lead to a dozen. Finally, the Lakers woke up a bit in the final stanza. BL cut the lead to three with just a minute to play, but it was too little too late and the Lakers fell BL was frigid from the floor and the foul line. At the charity stripe the Lakers only made 18 out of 33 tries (55%.)

6 Todd Guntner 72 led the maroon and white with 19 points. Scooter Dorney 72 chipped-in with 10 points and Larry Greenslit 71 added 6 points 35 Years Ago The varsity cagers were in the four-team Maryland Scholastic Association (MSA) B Conference playoffs and faced McDonogh in the semi-finals. BL beat the Eagles twice during the regular season with both games being close. However, in the playoff round McDonogh scored a surprisingly easy win over the Lakers gaining a huge first period lead. The Lakers played catch-up the rest of the game and could never get close. Steve Lynch 78 paced the Laker offense with 20 points. Kevin Scroggins 77 (15 points) and Mark Strohman 77 (14 points) and point guard Tim Voelkel 76 (6 points) also scored in the losing cause. 15 Years Ago BL defeated Park School in varsity basketball playoff action and was now set to play St. Paul s for the MSA C Conference title to be played at the Baltimore Arena. The Park game was played in front of a capacity crowd in the Iglehart Gym. The spectators saw a thrilling game won narrowly by BL BL was led underneath by three year starter Stan Ross 91, Gene Lower 92, and Wes Kirk 91. In the backcourt were shooting threats Chris Krastel 91 and Jason Walpert 91. Off the bench Coach Gelston could rely on Tom Saunders 93, Andy Sharretts 93, Josh Pomles 91, Ryan Sachs 91, Scott Miller 92, and Matt Ryan 91. St. Paul s beat the Lakers twice during the regular season but BL was confident they could win in the final game against the Crusaders. 10 Years Ago The varsity basketball team traveled to Gilman eager to avenge their previous 12 point loss to the Greyhounds earlier in the season. BL started slowly and by the end of the first period the Lakers were down by 8 points, However, they stormed back to take a two point lead at halftime. The game was close the entire second half and Gilman was able to hang on in the end and win the game BL had well balanced scoring led by Ryan Eby 02 with 16 points. David Rumbar 01 added 11 points and Evan Burns 04 had 10 points. Alex Filamor 02, Pat Mahoney 03 and Brian Read 02 all scored 8 points for the Laker cause. Gilman connected on 6 three-point attempts while the Lakers only drained two shots from downtown.
