3 Q&A With Head Coach Lane Lord Pitt State Head Women s Basketball Coach Lane Lord discusses the squad and his expectations for the upcoming season. Gorilla Media Relations (GMR): What do you think Pitt State fans have come to expect most from your teams? Lane Lord (LL): The Pitt State fans have come to expect and exciting offense, playing an up tempo games, as well as a tough defensive approach. We want to continue on our past seasons successes at home by continuing to improve our offensive style. I believe that our fans enjoy watching our team because we play with heart and passion. Our fans at Pittsburg State are outstanding! The players and coaches really enjoy the sixth man advantage they provide us at home games. GMR: You lost some major players from last season s team with DePrice Taylor and Nicole McCombs graduating. What kind of look will this year s team have with those two dynamic players gone? LL: We lost four seniors from a year ago, including three players who received All-MIAA honors. DePrice was our best pure driver and Maya had extreme energy and quickness at the point. Two-time all-conference post, Nicole McCombs, was a force in the paint. Aubrey Jones gave us experience and depth in the post position, as well as shot blocking ability. With those seniors graduating, we will need to rely on our under classmen who have been in the program to take over and be impact players this season. Sophomore Lauren Brown at 6-6 and junior Larissa Richards at 6-3 give us the biggest post tandem in the MIAA. Their impact will greatly determine how our season unfolds. Also, Kylee Baldetti is a senior transfer who can play inside or out. Her experience in NCAA competition, as well as her leadership skills will be vital to our team. We also have seven or eight players that have been in our program for two or three years. Now is their time to step up and contribute at a higher and more consistent level. GMR: You have four seniors this season and three of them have been part of the program since you got here. What does that add to the team? LL: Our three seniors that have been in our program for four years will play a major role this season. Bailey Waugh, Laura Glenn and Marissa Poppe have all had moments of greatness over their careers. All have started some games for us. Hopefully, they can all use their experiences to bring our younger players along. Senior leadership is a must for our team. GMR: Larissa Richards got to be a bigger and bigger presence on the court as last season went on. What more do you expect from her this year? LL: A healthy Larissa Richards is our hope for this season. Larissa broke the PSU shot blocking record a year ago, despite playing only 14 minutes a game. We would like to be able to play Larissa at least 20 minutes per game this year. Her presence in the paint defensively only makes our team that much more effective. Offensively, she is tough to stop when healthy. I know Larissa has dealt with a lot of adversity in her career. It would be a blessing to her and the team if she could have a healthy and productive season. 4 PSU 4 Outlook Coaches Players history Review MIAA Opponents Pittsburg State GMR: Do you see any returners changing roles or making contributions this season than in the past? LL: Drew Roberts, who was our fifth leading scorer as a freshman, will become more of a go to scorer this season. Again, our three four-year seniors will all see significant more playing time because of their experience. Lauren Brown will be on the floor much more this season. Her ability to alter the game defensively is unlimited. Courtney Tate has really dedicated herself to the game with an outstanding summer and fall. Her preparation for this season has been outstanding. Courtney is much improved at the point guard position. Guards Amanda Orloske, redshirt freshman Lisa Elmer and junior transfer Ashley Hanson have also had tremendous off-seasons and should help our team this season. GMR: Drew Roberts started out last season hot, but her point production slowed a little as the season went on. What has she done in the off season to improve her game and her confidence? LL: Drew had a tremendous start to the season as a freshman last year. It is a tough spot to be in as a freshman to continue that production in the grind of the MIAA. The league is made up of 22 and 23-year-old players that have gone through the MIAA and know what it takes to survive both mentally and physically. I believe Drew will learn from her freshman season. We expect Drew to be an all-conference performer and so does she. She has always had the confidence, but I believe the year of experience will make all the difference in the world. She is a gamer and is ready to have a breakout conference season. GMR: Who will you look to to be your team leaders this year, and what leadership qualities do they possess on and off the court that will be beneficial to the team dynamic? LL: Our team leaders will be our four seniors. Three of those seniors have been in our program for four years and they know what the coaches expect from them every single day. Also, senior transfer Kylee Baldetti has already shown great leadership qualities in the early pre-season workouts. GMR: You have a large group of new players this season. Which do you expect to make an immediate impact on the team? LL: We have a really talented group of incoming freshmen this season, as well as a couple of junior college transfers and a four-year transfer. It is too early to tell who will step up and be a major contributor in the freshmen class, but all four players possess some positives at this point. Y Cedria Devers has shown great explosive moves offensively and is probably the best athlete in our program. Brigit Hesser is a quality three-point shooter and a hard worker. Point guards Alexa Bordewick and Sara Molz have both shown they will be quality point guard in our league. The future is bright with our freshmen class. Of the transfers, senior Kylee Baldetti should have the biggest impact for the Gorillas this season. We call Kylee a hybrid player. At 6-1, Kylee has the ball handling and three-point shooting ability of a guard, but she is physical inside and can also play the post. We are extremely excited about her leadership both on and off the court. Ashley Hanson has a tremendous work ethic at the small forward and post positions. She is a little undersized in the post at 5-11, but she possesses a good face up game and she can really run the floor. She has been a pleasant surprise. Junior transfer Brooke Conley is a very athletic wing player with size and length. Brooke has shown the ability to really get to the basket in preseason drills and she has been one of the best three-point shooters. Junior transfer Britnee Foster has had a really good preseason as well. She can shoot the three and has shown to be one of our best ball penetrators early on. GMR: You have a bigger squad this year than in years past, what benefits and challenges does that present the coaching staff? LL: We have 18 players on our roster this season. That is an exciting number for our program. The last two recruiting classes we have re ally focused on signing high school players that will be able to be in our program for four or five years. As is evident in the MIAA, teams with fourth and fifth year seniors have an advantage in close games and tournament games. That being said, we have also been able to mix in a few junior college transfers as well. Why a big squad? It creates competition in practice. I love having a big squad. You MUST come to perform everyday. If you don t, then someone else is ready to take your spot. GMR: You also have had some changes in your coaching staff this year. What new perspectives do your new assistant coaches bring to the team? LL: We have a young staff this year. Amanda Davied is an outstanding fundamental teacher of the game. She continues to be a constant in our program. Our two graduate assistants from a year ago have moved on to new coaching opportunities. Andy Majors is an assistant at Stephen F. Austin, and Anna Nimz is now the head coach at Labette Community College. Our two new graduate assistants are Tisharria Huggins and Caitlin Demarest. With Amanda, Tisharria and Caitlin, we have three former players that were all point guards in college. You must understand the game and be a great leader to play the point guard position. I believe our new graduate assistants will bring excitement and understanding of the game. We also have student assistant Aubrey Jones who is out of playing eligibility and finishing up her degree this fall. Aubrey
5 has already shown signs of being a great coach in the future and she is a welcome addition to our staff. Nobody loves Pitt State more than Aubrey. GMR: What are the biggest assets your team possesses? LL: Our biggest assets this season will be our size in the post and our ability to shoot the three. Last season our three-point percentage really dropped from the season. I believe we have the ability to work inside first, then out, which will help our three-point shooting percentage. GMR: What does the team most need to work on throughout the season? LL: We need to work the most on developing team chemistry both on and off the court. I believe it is the most essential part of a team. The way we mature together on the floor will determine the outcome of our season Schedule Date Opponent Site Time Oct. 31 at Nebraska (exh) Lincoln, Neb. 2 p.m. Nov. 9 LIVIN THE DREAM (exh) HOME 5:30 p.m at Arkansas-Fort Smith Invitational Fort Smith, Ark. 12 vs. Arkansas-Fort Smith 7:30 p.m. 13 vs. Panhandle State Noon 16 NEWMAN HOME 5:30 p.m. 23 at Central Oklahoma Edmond, Okla. 7 p.m. GMR: What are your goals for the season and how will you go about achieving each of them? LL: We have three goals for the season: 1) Finish in the top three in the conference. 2) Make it to the MIAA Championship game. 3) Advance to the NCAA Tournament. We will be able to accomplish these goals if we stay healthy, develop team chemistry on the floor and work harder than our opponents each and every day. GMR: Having been in the MIAA for three years now, how does the knowledge of the coaches and teams help you in league play? LL: Our league is a great coaching conference. You must have your team ready to play each and every night or you will get beat. After three years in the MIAA, I have learned a tremendous amount and gained some valuable experience. With a pretty consistent coaching tenure around the league, we feel like we know what types of offenses and defenses to expect from a certain coach or program. Hopefully, that will help us stay at the top of the league and compete every night. GMR: How do you keep your team fresh and ready to play two games a week in such a tough conference? LL: Hopefully with a large roster, we can develop players that can produce behind our starters. Depth is only effective if it is quality depth.
