1 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (1-6) VS. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (5-3) REGULAR SEASON GAME #8 SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2, :00 PM (CENTRAL) ARROWHEAD STADIUM, KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI FOX Regional Coverage WDAF-TV (FOX 4 in Kansas City) BROADCAST INFORMATION Chiefs FOX Football Radio Network KCFX-FM (101.1 FM in Kansas City) Play-by-play: Ron Pitts Color Commentator: Tony Boselli Sideline Reporter: Charissa Thompson 2008 Stats and NFL Rankings THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs host Tampa Bay at Arrowhead for the fi rst time since 86 as the Bucs make just their fi fth regular season appearance in Kansas City. Kansas City is coming off a tough loss at the N.Y. Jets (10/26). The Chiefs forced three INTs of QB Brett Favre, but the Jets QB was able to guide his club to a comeback victory, throwing the game-winning TD with 1:00 left. In just his second NFL start, QB Tyler Thigpen looked sharp, throwing for 280 yards with two TDs and compiling an impressive rating. Tampa Bay (5-3) wraps up a two-game road swing after a 13-9 loss at Dallas (10/26). The Buccaneers are a familar foe for Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards, who helped Tony Dungy revitalize that franchise. Edwards served as assistant head coach/secondary coach under Dungy with Tampa Bay from After going 6-10 in 96, the Bucs made the playoffs three of the next four years, compiling a (.609) regular season record from The Bucs would reach the NFC Championship Game in 99 and would win Super Bowl XXXVII under head coach Jon Gruden following the 2002 campaign. While Edwards played a role in the Bucs resurgence, Gruden is certainly no stranger to Arrowhead, either. Gruden s fi rst game as an NFL head coach came in Kansas City as the Chiefs handed his Raiders squad a 28-8 setback (9/6/98). He then proceeded to register wins in his next three visits to Arrowhead as Oakland s head coach. In total, Gruden compiled a 5-3 record vs. Kansas City during his four seasons at the helm of the Silver and Black ( 98-01). The last time a Tampa Bay squad visited Arrowhead in the regular season was October 26, John Mackovic (KC) and Leeman Bennett (TB) were the coaches in that contest, while QBs Bill Kenney (KC) and Steve Young (TB) worked under center. That 22-year stretch between visits to Arrowhead by the Bucs ranks as the second-longest active such drought in the NFL. The longest such streak is also owned by Tampa Bay. Since the franchise s inception in 76, the Bucs have never visited Buffalo in the regular season. Up next for Kansas City is a road contest at San Diego (11/9). Tampa Bay enjoys a bye next week (11/9) before facing Minnesota (11/16). Tampa Bay will make its fi rst trip to Arrowhead since 86, the second-longest current streak an NFL team has gone without traveling to an individual opponent. The Buccaneers have won the last two meetings in the series, both of which have been played at Raymond James Stadium. Most recently, Tampa Bay won a back-and-forth battle by a count as RB Michael Pittman scored three TDs, including the game-winner with 11:50 left in the fourth quarter (11/7/04). CHIEFS VS. Kansas City s last victory vs. Tampa Bay was the Joe Bowl when Pro Football Hall of Famers QB Joe Montana and RB Marcus Allen made their regular season debuts in Chiefs uniforms as the Chiefs collected a 27-3 win on Opening Day (9/5/93). That contest also marked the regular season NFL debut of G Will Shields, whose franchise-record streak of 224 consecutive games played began in that victory at Tampa Stadium. The Chiefs claimed a win in its initial meeting with Tampa in 76 when the Bucs were a member of the AFC West. The Bucs switched to the NFC Central in 77, while Seattle joined the AFC West. Perhaps the most memorable Chiefs-Bucs game came at Tampa Stadium (12/16/79). The game was played in a constant downpour and was deadlocked in a scoreless tie until Bucs K Neil O Donoghue hit a 19-yard FG to give Tampa Bay a 3-0 advantage with 8:50 left in regulation. That win clinched the NFC Central for the Bucs, who advanced to the NFC title game vs. the L.A. Rams. Kansas City and Tampa Bay have met four times in preseason play with the Bucs holding a 3-1 edge. The Bucs won the last meeting by a count at Tampa (8/25/00), while the Chiefs claimed a decision in a game played at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK (8/8/98).

2 VS. CHIEFS HEAD COACH - HERM EDWARDS Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, The fi rst coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season, he helped the 2006 Chiefs become just the fi fth team since 2000 to overcome an 0-2 start and still make the postseason. Edwards guided the N.Y. Jets to three postseason berths during a fi ve-year stint ( ) with that franchise. He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL s Minority Coaching Fellowship in 89. He later served as a scout ( 90-91, 95) and also coached defensive backs ( 92-94). Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay s assistant head coach/dbs coach under Tony Dungy from Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in 76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia ( 77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in 86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State ( 87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in 90. BUCCANEERS HEAD COACH - JON GRUDEN Jon Gruden was named the seventh head coach in Tampa Bay history on February 18, In his fi rst season in Tampa, Gruden led the Buccaneers to a victory against the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII. The 2002 Bucs led the NFL in scoring defense (12.3 ppg), total defense (252.8 ypg) and pass defense (155.6 ypg). He also led Tampa Bay to playoff appearances in 2005 and He spent the previous four seasons ( 98-01) as the head coach in Oakland, where he posted a record. In 2000, Gruden guided the Raiders to their fi rst AFC Championship Game appearance since 90. The Sandusky, Ohio native served as the offensive coordinator for Philadelphia for three seasons ( 95-97). After serving the 91 season as the WRs coach at the University of Pittsburgh under Paul Hackett, Gruden resumed his NFL career as WRs coach under Mike Holmgren for Green Bay ( 92-94). He began his NFL coaching career as an offensive assistant with the 49ers ( 90). A QB at Dayton ( 83-85), Gruden served as a GA at Tennessee ( 86-87) before enjoying stints at Southeast Missouri State ( 88) and the University of the Pacifi c ( 89). Incredibly, 60.4% of the players on Kansas City s 53-man roster (32 of 53) have three years of NFL experience or less, including 15 rookies (28.3%), the most rookies on any NFL Opening Day roster. The Chiefs started six of those rookies on Opening Day, the highest tally by the club since the AFL-NFL merger in 70. Based on research compiled by Mike Sando of ESPN.com, the Chiefs boasted the NFL s youngest Opening Day starting lineup in the NFL at years old. Based on Opening Day 53-man rosters provided by the NFL, the Chiefs and Packers owned the NFL s youngest rosters at years old. In terms of average experience, no team had a lower average experience than Kansas City at 3.45 years. Kansas City also boasted the distinction of fi elding an NFL-high 17 rookies or fi rst-year players on its Opening Day roster, a fi gure that included a league-high 15 rookies. QB STABILITY A RARITY FOR EDWARDS The Chiefs have employed three different starting QBs for just the fi fth time in Chiefs history. The Chiefs are just the fourth team since the AFL-NFL merger to start three different QBs in the fi rst three games of the year in a nonstrike season, joining the 76 L.A. Rams, the 88 Cleveland Browns and the 97 Jacksonville Jaguars. Herm Edwards has made four playoff appearances since 2001 (only Tony Dungy - 7 and Bill Belichick - 6 own more). Since QB Vinny Testaverde started all 16 games for Edwards and the playoff-bound N.Y. Jets in 2001, Edwards has never enjoyed another season where a single QB opened all 16 games. Twice in KC (2006, 2008), his starting QB has been injured on Opening Day. Here are Edwards starting QBs during tenure as an NFL head coach. He ranks 11th on the NFL s all-time receiving chart, needing 10 more catches to bypass WR Jimmy Smith (862) for 10th. Gonzalez s 69 total TDs with the Chiefs trail only RB Priest Holmes (83) in KC annals. Gonzalez ranks second in franchise history with 10,274 combined net yards. In addition, no tight end in NFL history owns more consecutive 60-catch campaigns (nine) than Gonzalez. Gonzalez owns 23 career 100-yard receiving games, the most in Chiefs history. Those yard games are second in NFL history among TEs, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24). Gonzalez extended his team-record streak of games with at least one reception to 122 contests at the N.Y. Jets (10/26). Only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE in NFL history. NFL RECORD BOOK, TIGHT ENDS, CAREER RECEPTIONS RECEIVING YARDS TOUCHDOWNS T. Gonzalez 1. 10,251 T. Gonzalez T. 4 Tampa Bay Makes a Rare Regular Season Visit to Kansas City by Pete Moris Tampa Bay Makes a Rare Visit to Kansas City It s been 22 seasons since Tampa Bay s last regular season visit to Arrowhead, the second-longest active drought by one team visiting another current team in the NFL. The longest such streak is also owned by Tampa Bay. Since their inception in 76, the Bucs have never visited Buffalo in the regular season. 7 THE LAST TIME Buccaneers 34, Chiefs 31 November 7, 2004 Raymond James Stadium 65,495 KANSAS CITY TAMPA BAY The Chiefs suffered a narrow defeat in the waning moments of another game as Kansas City dropped a decision at Tampa Bay. Despite 459 yards of total offense, it was Tampa Bay that produced enough plays to make the difference. QB Trent Green orchestrated a crisp 10-play, 77-yard TD drive to open the game. The scoring came on a precision pass from Green who was drilled after the throw to WR Johnnie Morton for a 25-yard TD. However, as would happen all day, Bucs QB Brian Griese would counter with an eight-yard TD pass to FB Jameel Cook to tie the count at 7-7. Meanwhile, the Bucs defense was able to force three KC turnovers in extremely critical situations. After Green found WR Eddie Kennison for a 59-yard connection, Kennison was stripped by Bucs S Dwight Smith at the KC 11-yard line, thwarting a golden scoring opportunity. A wild second quarter ensued as the two clubs combined for 31 points. Bucs RB Michael Pittman and KC RB Priest Holmes each scored on short TD runs, while a 31-yard FG gave KC a lead midway through the quarter. TB jumped back ahead before Green found Gonzalez for a 23-yard TD with 0:35 left in the half. Tampa Bay misfired on a 46-yard FG at the end of the period as KC took a lead into the locker room. Pittman bolted for a 78-yard score on the second snap of the third quarter, while Holmes left the game with a right knee injury. Green again rallied the Chiefs, connecting on a one-yard TD to TE Jason Dunn to give KC a edge entering the fourth quarter. A three-yard Pittman TD put TB ahead 34-31, but a high snap on the ensuing PAT try left the door open for the Chiefs. The game s key play came with 5:58 left and KC on the Bucs 22-yard line as LB Derrick Brooks connected with Green s elbow just as he was delivering a throw to Gonzalez in the end zone. The pass was intercepted, but KC s defense forced the Bucs to punt, giving the Chiefs one final shot. KC got as deep as the TB 43- yard line, but a pair of sacks by TB sealed the decision. Green finished the day with 369 passing yards to put him in a tie with QB Bill Kenney (15) for the most 300-yard games in Chiefs history. Meanwhile, Gonzalez finished the contest with nine catches for 123 yards. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez moved ahead of Frank Wycheck (505) into fourth place in career receptions by a TE in NFL history. 12 The Jets punched in the winning score with 1:00 to play, spoiling the Chiefs hopes of pulling the upset. QB Tyler Thigpen was at the controls of a Chiefs offense that produced two TDs, 330 yards and did not have a turnover. The Chiefs defense picked off QB Brett Favre three times, including two by CB Brandon Flowers, who returned one for a 91-yard TD. The Jets got the ball first and Favre promptly moved his offense 73 yards on 10 plays that ended up with an 18-yard TD pass to RB Leon Washington for an early 7-0 lead. After the Chiefs punted in their first posession, Favre took the Jets back into scoring territory, but the Chiefs defense stiffened and K Jay Feely missed a 36-yard FG try. The Jets had the ball back as the first quarter was nearing an end, but Flowers picked off a Favre pass and returned the INT 27 yards to the Jets 38-yard line. The Chiefs got on the board early in the second quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Thigpen to TE Tony Gonzalez. It capped a four-play, 38-yard drive after the Flowers INT to tie the score at 7-7. After trading punts, Thigpen continued his hot hand by completing his first 10 passes before throwing an incompletion with 3:59 to play in the period. Defensively, the Chiefs picked off another Favre pass, as S Jarrad Page pulled down the INT. The Jets got a TD before the end of the quarter. Washington took a draw play 60 yards for his second TD of the day, making the score 14-7 in favor of the Jets. The Chiefs came right back and moved the ball into scoring position, thanks to a 30-yard run by RB Jamaal Charles and a 21-yard Thigpen-to-Gonzalez completion. The Chiefs got their second touchdown of the half, as Thigpen hit WR Mark Bradley in the end zone to tie the game at as a replay review gave KC the tying score. Beginning the third quarter out of a no-huddle, shotgun scheme, the Chiefs offense moved 66 yards on 12 plays. Thigpen completed passes to five different receivers in the drive, moving the ball to the Jets nine-yard line before settling for a 30-yard K Connor Barth FG and a lead. Late in the quarter Favre moved the Jets 72 yards on 13 plays that ended on a one-yard TD run by RB Thomas Jones. Jones TD gave the Jets a lead as the third quarter came to a close. But the Chiefs got a huge lift midway through the fourth quarter on the second INT of the game by Flowers. He grabbed a pass intended for WR Chansi Stuckey and returned the INT for a 91-yard TD to give the Chiefs a lead with 7:48 to play in the game. The Chiefs had a chance to salt away the victory, but couldn t get a first down. A nice punt return by Washington gave the Jets possession at the Chiefs 46-yard line. In six plays, Favre had New York in the end zone, throwing a 15-yard TD pass to WR Lavernaues Coles to make the final count GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez (853) moved into 11th on the NFL s all-time receptions chart ahead of WR Irving Fryar (851). CB Brandon Flowers 91-yard INT return TD was the fifth-longest in Chiefs history and the longest since CB Kevin Ross had a 99-yard INT return at San Diego (9/6/92). Flowers 118 INT return yards were the secondhighest single-game total in team history. THE LAST GAME N.Y. Jets 28, Chiefs 24 October 26, 2008 Giants Stadium 78,037 KANSAS CITY N.Y.
