All times EST and subject to change THE AMERICAN TODAY The American welcomes four new coaches to the league this year: East Carolina s Heather Macy, Houston s Ron Hughey, Tulane s Lisa Stockton and Tulsa s Matilda Mossman. All 11 teams kick off their campaigns this weekend. Two teams, East Carolina and USF, take the court in tournaments at neutral sites, while six others open up their seasons at home. UConn and Houston are on the road for their season openers, and Tulane splits up the action this weekend hosting Mississippi Valley State on Friday before traveling to McNeese State on Sunday. UConn was the unanimous favorite to win the 2015 American women s basketball title in a preseason poll of the 11 head coaches. USF was picked to finish second and was followed by East Carolina, Temple and Tulane. UConn junior forward Breanna Stewart was the preseason pick for American Player of the Year. Teammate Kia Nurse was selected as the preseason American Freshman of the Year. Stewart and USF junior guard Courtney Williams were unanimous selections to the All-American Athletic Conference preseason first team. The Bulls return 13 players from last season s WNIT Final Four squad. USF s non-conference slate features eight games against NCAA tournament teams from last season. CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS UConn is ranked No. 1 in both the AP and USA Today preseason polls. USF is receiving votes in both polls. Tulane, who joined The American this summer, left Conference USA as the winningest basketball program. Senior guard Jamie Kaplan was a Honorable Mention All-American and ranked seventh in the NCAA with 6.7 assists per game last season. The 99 game American Athletic Conference schedule is highlighted by national televised games on ESPN and CBS Sports Network. The league also features a number of non-conference games that will be carried by its national television partners. Every game in the American Women s Basketball Championship is aired live on the ESPN family of networks. Thirty conference women s basketball games will be produced and distributed live by The American Digital Network and will air on free of charge. American women s basketball enjoyed tremendous success in its inaugural season. UConn won a NCAA record ninth women s basketball title while five teams qualified for postseason play (UConn, East Carolina, USF, SMU, and Tulane). Additionally, over 400,000 fans attended home games this past season.

2 AMERICAN NOTEBOOK 2015 Final Four to be Held in Tampa Tampa Bay will serve as host to the NCAA Women s Final Four for the second time when it comes to the Tampa Bay Times Forum on April 5 and 7, The NCAA, Tampa Bay Local Organizing Committee, Tampa Bay Sports Commission and USF will host the event. Welcome Home Three new teams are joining The American. East Carolina, Tulane and Tulsa joined the league in July 2014 from Conference USA. East Carolina and Tulane appeared in the Women s NIT tournament last season. Two Conference Teams Featured on ESPN s Big Monday UConn, the two-time defending national champion, will appear in two Big Monday games on ESPN2 this season. The Huskies will host their first Big Monday matchup on Feb. 9 against South Carolina (8 p.m. ET). On March 2, USF hosts UConn at 7 p.m. eastern. Gobble, Gobble, Tournament Time In late November when some of us will be at home enjoying a Thanksgiving feast, many of the American basketball programs will be competing in tournaments all over the country and the Caribbean. Auriemma, Stewart Earn FIBA World Championship Gold UConn head coach Geno Auriemma and junior forward Breanna Stewart both were part of the USA Basketball Women s World Championship Team that went undefeated in the FIBA World Championship in Turkey. Auriemma coached several of his former players including Sue Bird, Maya Moore and Diana Taurasi. Stewart was the only college athlete to make the team. Winning the FIBA title automatically qualifies Team USA for the 2016 Olympics to be held in Rio de Janeiro. Tulane Alum Impacts WNBA Former Tulane standout Barbara Farris will serve her second straight season with the New York Liberty as an assistant coach. Farris, a Tulane Athletic Hall of Fame member, was drafted No. 3 overall by New England Blizzard, an American Basketball Association team, in She joined the WNBA in 2000 and played with the Detroit Shock. She spent 10 years playing in the WNBA. Televised Midnight Madness Featured Defending National Champions ESPN tipped off the college basketball season with Midnight Madness coverage from 11 campuses, including the 2014 NCAA Men s and Women s Division I National Champion UConn Huskies. ESPNU Midnight Madness combined studio and remote coverage and brought fans a three-hour start of the season celebration. ESPN3 also provided Midnight Madness coverage and carried UConn s First Night. ESPN3 s content is available on-demand. Two Huskies Named AP Preseason All-Americans Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Breanna Stewart have each been selected to the five-member Associated Press Preseason All-America Team for the secondstraight season. The duo are the first teammates in the history of the poll to earn multiple selections to the AP Preseason Team as both earned the nod last year as well. Notre Dame s Jewell Loyd, South Carolina s Tiffany Mithchell and Duke s Elizabeth Williams joined Mosqueda-Lewis and Stewart on the team. Hughey Named Head Coach at Houston Ron Hughey was named the seventh head coach in Houston women s basketball history on April 22, Hughey is a veteran of seven postseason tournaments, including six visits to the NCAA Tournament and one appearance in the Women s NIT. At his last stop, Florida State, Hughey helped guide the Seminoles to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament in both and He was on the coaching staff at UCF when they won a conference championship in Cincinnati, Mount St. Joseph Team Up To Raise Awareness for Pediatric Cancer A freshman basketball player at Mount St. Joseph, Lauren Hill s story has captured the nation over the last month. Hill, a Cincinnati native, was diagnosed with diffused intrinsic pentene gleoma (DIPG), an inoperable form of brain cancer with a near-zero chance of survival. Cincinnati women s basketball presented Hill with an honorary jersey during halftime of the Bearcats exhibition game against Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday, November 7. Hill spoke to the crowd about her battle at halftime and 22 supporters completed the #Layup4Lauren challenge to honor Lauren s jersey number 22. In addition, Cincinnati wore special grey t-shirts during warmups. American Athletic Conference Supports #Chillin4Charity American Athletic Conference member schools stepping up this summer to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and participate in the #Chillin4Charity initiative. The Bulls bolstered its non-conference schedule in to be one of the toughest in the nation; schedule includes No. 10 Maryland, No. 11 Kentucky, Oklahoma and Penn State. Junior forward Alisia Jenkins was named to the American preseason allconference second team. She recorded the second-most single season rebounds in USF history (369) last year. Junior guard Courtney Williams led USF in scoring with 586 points last season and became just the third person in program history to surpass 550 points in a single year. The Green Wave left Conference USA as the winningest basketball program, accumulating 397 total victories. Tulane posted a overall record last season, garnering head coach Lisa Stockton s 13th 20-win season. The Green Wave recently made their 15th trip to the postseason under Stockton, qualifying for the 2014 WNIT Tournament. It marked the squad s fifth straight trip to the postseason. Despite losing three starters with at least 14 starts from the season, Cincinnati has five players on the roster with at least eight starts under their belt. Senior guard Alyesha Lovett is expected to miss the season due to an achilles injury. Houston opens the season on Friday at North Texas. The Cougars are 13-6 against the Mean Green and hav won the last five meetings between the teams. Nine letterwinners and two starters return from last season. Leading the charge among Houston s returners is junior forward Marche Amerson. Amerson led the Cougars and ranked 18th in the American Athletic Conference with 10.4 points per game last season. Houston s campaign includes 11 games against eight teams that reached postseason play last season. The Mustangs enter the season with their youngest team in a decade, listing five true freshmen on the roster for the first time since SMU returns just four letterwinners from a season ago, which saw the Mustangs advance to the second round of the WNIT. Destynee Hives-McCray returns to the lineup after playing in just 10 games last year due to an illness. SMU opens up the regular season this weekend at home vs. Northern Colorado and UTEP. The Miners went 29-8 last season and advanced to the WNIT championship game. Tulsa returns nine letterwinners, including four starters, and welcomes four newcomers this year. The Golden Hurricane won its two exhibition games by an average of 39.0 points per game, scoring 91.5 ppg in the two contests. Tulsa kicks off its campaign against Northern Iowa on Friday. Junior Ashley Clark averaged a teamleading 14.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game last season. Weekly Awards The American names a Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week each Monday morning during the season. Winners are chosen from nominations provided by conference sports information directors. The information will be available from the conference office via release as well as on the league web site. Annual Awards The American Athletic Conference will name allconference teams and individual honors for the league s Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Most Improved Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Sixth Player of the Year Award and Sportsmanship Award. The awards are chosen by a vote of the league s 11 head coaches at the conclusion of the regular season and will be announced in conjunction with the Conference Championship. The American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team is comprised of players who have an overall grade-point average of 3.00 or better over the previous academic year and completed at least two semesters of academic work. Basketball honorees are announced in the summer. The American Athletic Conference Women s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year was established to recognize student-athletes who have achieved success in the classroom and on the field.
